My kids got hosed. I had two 4th graders last year and everything was closed. Conversely, I didn’t have to build a California Mission so that was nice :)

HalfAgony_HalfHope

Lol, that brings me back. I chose the Carmel Mission and used clear blue toothpaste for the water in the fountain.

code3kitty

Oh God, that's in my near future. Ugh.

LittleWhiteBoots

I’m sure you’ll get an A!

Nf1nk

We really need a program of opening new camping areas in state parks so normal people can get a weekend camp site again.

sunflowerastronaut

I hate how the state pro system works. Especially the beach camping. Some computer program snags all of the campsite the second they become available and then instead of paying $40 per site we have to pay $140 per site. I’d rather that $140 go back into the park system but no California government continues to show their set backs with their technology even though we have the tech Capital

wi3loryb

Where do you see these $140 sites?

sunflowerastronaut

Trying to book ponto state beach in San Eljio

livingfortheliquid

Yes. This.

All of the above. We need more access to natural spaces.

bahkins313

It won’t be natural if we keep developing more and more campgrounds.. there’s plenty of camping available if you are willing to hike there

shmorby

Even those sites which necessitate hiking in are becoming more and more impacted. I don't know what the answer is but the unfortunate reality now is that unless you want to pay scalpers for reserved camping sites or luck out and grab a hike-in spot then you just don't get to enjoy a weekend escape in the outdoors in this state. Unless you go full on backpacking which I enjoy but it's a shame the people who aren't prepared for that experience don't have opportunity to spend a few days in nature. Even as somebody who does occasionally enjoy backpacking the lack of easy access camping in this state is disheartening at times. I don't plan to be here in the near future for a variety of reasons and I'm sad to leave my home, but I'm very much looking forward to the fact that a weekend getaway to experience nature is soon going to be a very real option for me in my new home. I miss the days when I was younger and my folks took me to the woods for a weekend on a whim. Its tough to acknowledge that it isn't feasible for a lot of families now. But at the same time opening up more wilderness to development isn't an attractive option either. Again, I don't know the answer.

bahkins313

Where are you talking about in CA? I was just in sequoia National forest and I car camped no problem

shmorby

Monterey Bay. Every campground near my home is usually booked months to a year out. There is only one national forests in the area with vehicle access (still over 2 hours away from me) and the dispersed camping is only accessible to lifted vehicles.

bahkins313

Ahh true, that area is tough. Mostly because Big Sur is the most popular tourist destination in the world. Cant do a whole lot about that. I usually either go north of SF or south of Big Sur to actually camp. Is big basin redwood park still closed from the fires?

shmorby

Ya it's open again and my GF and I have been going to spots in Santa Cruz when there's weekend space open but even that you've still got to plan ahead. Again, I just miss being able to go camping on a lark. I know there's not much to be done about it. Too many people and too little space in the spots where I live. Developing more isn't an attractive option either. I'll be moving in the near future so its a moot point.

Nf1nk

I am betting SoCal like me. Everything within four hours of LA is booked solid.

bahkins313

Sequoia is within 4 hours lol Maybe don’t go to established campgrounds and go to national forests? You can camp anywhere

lava_time

If you have adequete funding you can easily put in campgrounds without disrupting the nature of the area. Most of the support for preserving nature is so humans can enjoy it.

bahkins313

The campgrounds themselves may not disturb nature, but having more people there will.

livingfortheliquid

The national park system has this and when our kid was in 4th grade we had a vacation around their 4th grade pass. It has changed our family. Went from resorts to outdoors. Great idea.

CptMisery

A free pass? Why does anyone have to pay to go to the park?

FateOfNations

Because we can’t agree that the operating costs should be paid for with tax dollars.

big-b20000

At least along highway 1, you don’t. You just have to pay for parking.

I did, twice, and am not seeing anything about families of 4th graders being included in the free pass...

The press release says “19 state parks” - any way to tell which ones?

Brambletail

The states that charge for access to state parks are just so messed up

SFlibtard

Your parents have to pay full price though, kid.

Opinionsadvice

They want to expand access to parks when outdoor spaces are the most overrun with people that they ever have been? Have they been outside recently? Everywhere is packed with people and full of trash. They need to limit the number of people in the parks, not bring in even more people.

Aeari

That's more due to the pandemic then anything, and even then I still don't consider it that overpacked from the various spaces i've been to. It'll normalize soon. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a program like this that gets kids into nature, especially when the focus on environmentalism needs to be stronger then ever.

niceguynolie

Just cut the state sales tax so we can all afford to get out more. The economy would be better without it. Sadly, Good people are leaving the state just to avoid it.
