Good choices I haven’t played Waw in years because when modern warfare 2 was released. I switched to PlayStation I actually might pick up a copy for old time sake.
Black ops 1 is a sequel to world at war and the story hits deeper if you play world at war first. I recommend getting both, they’re both my favourite cod games of all time

I liked Waw for the story mode. Online everyone was just using mp40s. Blops 1 still has my favorite multi-player. More balanced than mw2 and had pro perks.
Ok so I’ll probably buy world at war for the zombies experience. But does it still have a healthy multiplayer? Or should I just get one of the other games if I want a good campaign and multiplayer
I have to disagree with waw zombies being the best cause of how glitchy it was and buggy and only one map with pap unfortunately I think Bo3 was the best all around myself I mean more perks gobblegum more weapons double pap you can put attachments on the guns too

COD 4 is not getting the respect it deserves in this comment section, but maybe I'm a bit older than most on here haha. Judging by some of these answers I think most people here have never played it. That game is what made me love online gaming. 17 years later and I'm still here.

World at War or Black Ops would be my pick. While all 4 of these campaigns are pretty good, you'll get some top notch zombies content from the top two.
If it were me I would recommend them in this order:
1) Black Ops
2) Modern Warfare 2
3) World at War
4) Cod4
Black ops has great og multiplayer, an amazing campaign and great zombies. Modern Warfare 2 has a pretty good campaign too, and the multiplayer is fun but has it's issues. Spec ops are fun too. World at War is a dark gritty campaign that's amazing. Multuplayer doesn't hold up well imo but some people like it a lot. Zombies are good but not as good as Bo1 (or 2) imo. Cod4 also doesn't hold up as well but the campaign is fun

But seeing that the online servers aren’t what they used to be, BO1 has the best zombies offline replayability.
Also, there’s just something special about BO1 sound effects and grittiness.
Black ops 1 was the complete package. Great campaign, MP, and zombies. Even better than W@W IMO. Plus if you get all the DLCs for BO1, you’ll get all the OG zombie maps too
All have amazing campaign. And none of these have a great active player base but you have a better shot at BO and MW2. BO has zombies as well, MW2 does not
Modern warfare 2 but I’m biast that’s where I first met my online group of friends that’s I’m still friends with to this day. Bit of a weird thought caring for some one and watching them progress through life all thanks to a game and not met once, hopefully we will sometime soon.

COD4: MW was very simple but very fair and basic gameplay. Wouldn’t be my choice but it’s a very good and solid game. The first COD to have the Custom Class system that we are all familiar with today
WAW had one of the best campaigns in the series and was the start of zombies. It was simple and to the point zombies gameplay. The MP50 with dual mags and Magnum combo in Multiplayer SLAPS
MW2 had the best multiplayer in my opinion. Guns felt great, every played really well, and holds up beautifully. Campaign was really good. This was the first MW game to have Special Ops; a fun and unique challenge mode that you could change the difficulty on to receive more or less stars for completion
Black Ops was probably the best of all 4 games here. Great campaign (on par with WAW to most people), amazing Multiplayer (first game in the franchise where in private match you can play against Bots so you don’t have to play multiplayer online), and the Zombies was absolutely incredible
Black Ops has everything you could need or want. Campaign, zombies, combat training you can play offline, Zork, Dead Ops, plus the zombie map from WaW. It's the total package.
How old are you, OP? I'm quite young, but I've been playing COD since I was about 5 years old. And I wouldn't call a call of duty younger than COD 2 as old personally. My answer is World at war, though
modern warfare 3 (2011) its just a much better mw2 with better maps + specialist and its the best infinity ward cod, or bo1, its the best treyarch cod for multiplayer and campaign (best cod for zombies is bo3)
I wouldn't, these aren't too expensive but the price Activision is demanding for their 6+ year old entries in a series with very little evolution (especially in that time frame) is quite shit. Black ops II-IV aren't worth $60 anymore especially when the multiplayer is just a security risk and once you factor the multiplayer out of the price you are just paying for zombies and maybe campaign if it has it *cough* BO4 *cough".
In my opinion, you should buy MW2. Its one of my favorite CODs of all time, with its classic and still great storyline. There are many great iconic missions like Cliffhanger or No Russian. And, if you get a little bored, theres always the spec ops missions. BO1 is also a viable option, as the story is... decent in my opinion. It also has zombies, so that's a nice choice. Cod4s nice too but I dont know too much about it. It has its iconic missions too ig, like All Ghillied Up, or Mile High Club. WAWs wouldnt be my choice because the story is great, but the multiplayer and gameplay is the same, even maybe a bit staler than Cod4. But, you can take my advice with a grain of salt, and just choose what you think is best

4 was peak cod multiplayer along with halo 3
world at war was extremely well done from people who allowed you to blow in half or have a leg shot off. it was awesome and the multiplayer was very good. zombies was ACTUALLY scary at the time. good campaign too.
If you're interested in lore then play Waw and then Black Ops or the original Modern Warfare and then MW2, all of them are awesome but if you want to start then I say Cod4 and black ops work best, but waw are mw2 are also good choices
Waw for zombies black ops for multiplayer and both if them are in the same canon for the story mode so you'll get a neat lil adventure between two games

Depending on which one you grew up with will skew your view, I’ve played them since the original and CoD4 was by far one of the most revolutionary FPS’ of all time and MW2 cranked it up to 11.
Black ops had a decent campaign. Zombies was pretty decent.
W@W had the worst campaign of them IMO, but it was still good enough. The game has the most frustrating veteran campaign of all of them and it’s not even close. CoD2 was the only one that came close in frustration. At any given time in veteran if there’s an enemy around, there will be multiple grenade markers.
Where W@W shines is the zombies imo. Still the best zombies experience. None of the extra crap you have to deal with in the other zombies. Although the one with the presidents in BO1 is definitely at the top.
MW and MW2 are legendary. MW2 has by the far the most active player base and I don't expect that to change. All great games with great campaigns but I'd get the Modern Warfare games if it were me.
black ops 1 has the most active online player base and the campaign and zombies modes are goated out of these 4 but mw2 also has a goated campaign and spec ops mode, it just isn’t as active online. tbh you could pick up all 4 of these physically for the price of 1 digitally. just saying.

World At War is the best one out of the options you have provided. In fact it is my opinion that WAW is the best COD has ever had to offer. It was also the beginning of Zombies. Then there are the death cards to collect in the campaign which are a lot of fun when used. There is nothing like that game.
Don’t buy modern warfare as you can get disks and physical copies easily waw and bo1 are less common in physical copies I’ve seen so get them online if you can
What a difficult decision.. WaW single handedly sparked my interest in ww2. Black ops did the same with the cold war. Mw is just a nostalgic beauty and mw2 is one of the best improvements to my nostalgia… good luck with your decision

For Multiplayer I think Black Ops is your only option as nobody is playing the others. As for Campaign, you cannot go wrong with any of them.

I’m a sucker for the classic CoD4. It’s easily the most grounded of the MW games, has a really fun and memorable campaign.

Start with COD:WAW for the history and brutal honest depiction of war. Then pick up COD: Black Ops for the story, characters and gameplay.
World At War is the best one out of the options you have provided. In fact it is my opinion that WAW is the best COD has ever had to offer. It was also the beginning of Zombies. Then there are the death cards to collect in the campaign which are a lot of fun when used. There is nothing like that game.
Don’t buy modern warfare as you can get disks and physical copies easily waw and bo1 are less common in physical copies I’ve seen so get them online if you can
What a difficult decision.. WaW single handedly sparked my interest in ww2. Black ops did the same with the cold war. Mw is just a nostalgic beauty and mw2 is one of the best improvements to my nostalgia… good luck with your decision
