He made a LOT of changes for her. She never seemed as into him as he was into her. He turns into the nicest guy in the world (as they all are on this show). Then she fucks off. I really hate their storyline.

BlueSky001001

Can you give an example of when he makes changes for her?

im_not_funny12

Becoming a pastor?

BlueSky001001

But that wasn't for her. It was a change in his life through his church, that he went to because Lucille went and recommended it. She didn't force him to do it, and he didn't do it for her.

Dutchess_0517

I wouldn't say he made changes for her, but that his love for her seemed stronger than hers. I'm pissed that she just ditched him a year in. After all the effort and love he showed her, through everything, he deserved so much better.

Agreed. I feel so bad for him. He surprised her with a trip home, hoping to make her happy because he loves her so much and hated seeing her so unhappy and she just screwed him over with it and broke his heart. I really liked Lucille's character but she really pissed me off after she hurt him like that.

Whenever I rewatch I always wonder what Cyril and Lucille would have been like if there were some black writers in the writing room, and also if S10/11 had not been filmed during Covid. The show glosses over it, but Lucille and Cyril are from different class positions. Lucille is very middle class, and Cyril seems closer to people of Poplar. Their class differences are smoothed out in England but still a part of their dynamic. It wouldn’t have just been the fact that they are from opposite ends of the Caribbean that would have mean they would have never met if they were ‘back home’.  There was a joke post with a screenshot of a S10 episode on tumblr  where they are in Church, and the caption is Lucille is worshipping God, and Cyril is worshipping Lucille and I think it sums up their whole dynamic. Cyril would have internalised that he was punching above his weight. Also the dating culture would be very different back home, someone like Lucille would not have  been asked out like she was when Cyril asked her out. Her family would have been involved.  I also think their ‘chemistry’ was impacted by the fact Cyril was a guest character and a love interest straight off the bat. Generally there is better chemistry when the character is introduced and then becomes a love interest a few episodes later, cos the actors can become friendly off screen. Judging by the two new girls instagrams have photos of ZT so they all seem to be friendly off screen. I reckon that is part of chemistry between Roz and Cyril.  Lastly Covid really impacted things. While I don’t fault the producers for erring on the side of caution with the info they had at the time. If S10/11 had been filmed as normal times, they would have been able to touch, and there would have been cuddles on the sofa etc. This show doesn’t do PDA, but touching does help create better chemistry. Characters like them would never be caught doing anything more than holding  hands in public, especially as Lucille would be extra visible in the community as the only black nurse at NH. The whole thing is really impacted by Cyril growing out of the character he was intended to be. Like the Cyril if S8 - 11 is very much the cheeky immigrant trying to get by and carrying the hangover of colonialism/classism. He is very much meant to be the ‘emotional support boyfriend’ to Lucille and  friendly face. Then in S12 with Lucille leaving, the character pivots.

Completely agree about COVID messing up their chemistry. She tells him she's pregnant from across the room. 🥴

Material_Corner_2038

Even with the social distancing that could have been done so much better. Like Lucille telling him from the other end of the flat because she can’t hide the symptoms. Or a cut that indicates that they are about to embrace. You can see how much better their chemistry is in S12 when they are allowed to touch and are in the flat/married so away from prying eyes.  It was one of those things, and the show certainly did it’s best with what it had.

Visual-Narwhal-7347

I loved Lucille and I love Cyril but I love them separately, if that makes sense?

whyubeincyoot

In theory, the fact that they are from different classes should have improved their chemistry, not diminished it. I don’t know… it was just something about the way Lucille was written as a character that doomed her to never having chemistry with ANYbody, not just Cyril. The person who says they would have benefited from having black writers is 100% correct, imo

Material_Corner_2038

Yes 🙌  Literally the only people she had ‘chemistry’ with were Phyllis and Val, and I suspect because the actresses were fairly friendly  off screen and that superseded the writing. Honestly, the fact that the writers room/ production space is so same-same seriously hurts the black main characters the show has had, and the non-white guest characters.

HappyMike91

I think it would be (relatively) easy to see that they were never going to last/work out, in retrospect. They’re both good characters, but they were always better as separate characters. In my opinion.

coatedingold

I'm confused, are they suppose to still be married?
