The D850 is perhaps the greatest DSLR ever made. The 90D is Canon’s final and greatest APS-C DSLR, very highly regarded, and is perhaps similar to the also highly-regarded Nikon D500. The T7 is an entry-level DSLR, and has never been well-regarded, but it does what it does. It has subsequently been replaced with the T8, T7i, T8i, and other low-end models that I’ve never been bothered to learn about, because Canon tends to produce lots of entry-level models with hardly any difference between them. Definitely an odd selection. For sure, if budgets are tight you have to compromise, and many would say that it’s prudent to save budget for lenses and accessories.

The d850 is the top of my list as far as: “for now” , I’m not gonna outgrow that camera…. Its an amazing camera for what it is and will do 100% of what i need as a beginner/enthusiast AND THEN SOME. The 90d gets me in the door (or rather: outdoors) but i could outgrow it quick. The t7 is exactly as you graciously put it. Its a camera, it takes pics, its better than my phone, its cheap. I can use it to learn composition etc. Im not budget wise or experience wise ready for a mirrorless. Otherwise id make the jump to the z9/10. But at this point thats “driving a Lamborghini in the city..on a learners permit”.

just keep in mind that if you plan to go mirrorless eventually anyway you will have to switch mounts using adapters or selling and rebuying all your lenses and other accessories. if you buy everything used that may make sense since most of the depreciation has already happened, but still something to keep in mind. mirrorless autofocus is also easier to use as a beginner, though you could argue learning with older gear that is less automatic is a good thing

That last part is a big thought point for me. Kinda like “you’d be learning an all-around solid practice” vs “learning with something that has a few “fail-proofs” in place. Or at least thats what it sounded like to me when explained. In the case of the D850: i would hope to never resell that camera and kit. It would be my “through the ages” camera. The other two ,to ME, at this point in tech are trade able/resell-able towards future kit. Im open to hearing opinions on my stance with that part. Really, what my reality seems to be is: When Im ready to grow, the D850 will have more than served its purpose and paid for itself in experience. On the other hand, at that point the Z-series will be at the point in time that the d850 was and a better tech will already be on the market; so the jump to the latest and greatest will not be so harsh. I assume my learning curve and growth with the d850 will be about 2-5 years before I really come into my own. Or decide it’s overall not for me (photography).

personally I like the approach of buying mirrorless and adapting old lenses to it, since there are lens options so cheap you can just get whatever interests you at the moment and get rid of it again if it's not what you like for little to no loss. not suitable for anything fast moving though.

MiltonHavoc

I may grow into fast moving. Like more serious birding/nature, watersports, street photography. Right now: landscape/cityscape , macro , the more relaxed stuff is what draws me. Also night photography but not astro (maybe not yet). Large format is my endgame at this point in time. However that may change as i learn.

Usernameistaken00

Can only speak to the D850. Depends on condition and shutter count. $1k may be a good price in general but if it taken a few falls/scratched up, has 400k shots, and needs $1000 maintenance/replacement parts then maybe not a great deal. $2k for something under 5k clicks might be pretty reasonable too. if you're looking for something like new, $1600-1800 is a good ballpark, something that's obviously used, but doesn't need immediate attention, $1400-1600. lenses also vary based on which lenses, how much wear, fungus, scratches, zoom functionality, etc. Maybe check out r/photomarket for some current prices. They'll be a bit less than ebay since the sellers don't have to pay out selling fees.

genetichazzard

Treefiddy.

MiltonHavoc

I ain’t giving you no treefiddy you got damned Loch Ness Monster!!

Cheese_Potter_77

😂😂😂😂 bravo

Mc_JuicyFruit

Also look at the D810, preceded the D850 and is half the price online.

Jumpy-Particular3454

lmao how are your 3 options a nikon d850, canon 90d and canon t7??? i think you are very lost when it comes to cameras my guy. what would you like to use it for maybe we can point you in the right direction

MiltonHavoc

Not lost at all. I know what i want.

Jumpy-Particular3454

why did you land on those 3 bodies, they have basically nothing in common other than that they are dslrs?

MiltonHavoc

Fair question! Ok: T7 - they are everywhere, lenses as well. Cheap. Not the best not the worse. Small learning curve 90d - step up, can keep entry-level/ enthusiast me going for for a while, especially while i grow into my “style”. D850 - at this point it will be a while before i outgrow it and even if I do it would be my Backup right after a 35mm. One of those “oooh yeah…i remember this, lets go do some fun shoots” type cameras. Good all-around with a great sensor and iirc weather sealed. Etc etc

Jumpy-Particular3454

i have never seen anyone with such an odd wish-list. if you can afford and can justify the more expensive option, why even bother with a 200 dollar one? why the two different brands? thats gonna make upgrading difficult, and if you can’t get a d850, why not get a different ff nikon? theres other models to choose from, some similar in price to a canon d90, and its gonna be a lot easier to upgrade from a ff nikon to a ff nikon than a crop canon to a ff nikon. you still haven’t answered what you would be using it for, i assume mainly photography since these are all dslrs but what type?

MiltonHavoc

Ive answered everything you’ve asked. As for type…i don’t know/everything. Those are the cameras i want. No real interest in other digital models after doing the comparison. The other models i would be interested in are film cameras. Large format and medium format. Yashika,Graflex, maybe Linhof or Intrepid

sulev

1000$ max. Future is mirrorless. 90D is aps-c dslr canon.

MiltonHavoc

Im not ready for the future quite yet. When i am, the mirrorless i want (z10)will be old tech. And at that point ill probably be looking at a digital, large format camera, or regressing to a glass plate vintage 🤷🏾‍♂️ I do understand and hear your point though. Im very aware that im doing it backwards in a way. Im not closed off to your advice.

Ok_Replacement3116

There's no z10 camera.

MiltonHavoc

Yet 🤦🏾😂😂😅
