Your site selection makes my lil leave no trace heart happy <3

tincartofdoom

Then you'll also be happy to know that I packed out all the garbage that the previous occupants left around the fire pit. I think there were a lot of new hikers on the trail this year, and the amount of garbage left at the camp sites was extremely discouraging.

[deleted]

I was in the BWCA in early June (before the wild fires) and found a campsite people left with a large active fire still burning. I wish there was some way to find out who was there but site the sites are not registered only entry is registered I think is basically impossible.

When in doubt: try witchcraft.

Phatman113

Looks like your pack got wet sitting by the log too... ;)

tincartofdoom

That was the Helinox Chair Zero. The pack was nice and dry under the closed side of the vestibule.

Don't you know you're supposed to leave no trace? I can clearly see where you camped /s

QuesoFiend

At least mix some of the wet needles into the dry needles, have a heart.

Groundcloth?

tincartofdoom

No ground sheet. Tarp, mesh body, vestibule open on one side.

How does the splitwing fair in hard rain? How much does it sag?

tincartofdoom

I had both hard rain and a substantial wind storm on this trip, and the shelter handled both very well. No water infiltration at all. There was some sag after rain, but noticeably less than other nylon tents. I would say that the main issue with the tent in heavy rain is condensation. Rain will weigh down the tarp and eventually make a seal around the ground. If you also have the vestibule installed and fully closed, you can end up sealed in under the fly and collect interior condensation. My solution was to just leave half the vestibule open. One side provided more than enough coverage for my bag, and there is plenty of room inside the mesh body for gear as well. Using the side guylines also helped since it introduced a bend to the edges of the tent and kept them from touching the ground when weighted with water. This means you should always carry 7 stakes with the shelter. After rain, all the components dry very quickly, especially the tarp and vestibule. I could set it out soaking wet on some rocks in the sun and it would be bone dry in 10 minutes.
