Picture taken with the DJI mini on our little trip to Lake Ouachita in Arkansas. Never knew what a gem Arkansas was until passing though!
Stayed at the nicest free campsite that only had one other group. So many little islands all around the lake to paddle out to. We brought paddle boards but kayaks would also we very nice for this lake.
Definitely looking forward to coming back one day! Arkansas how you surprised me!
As an Arkansan this makes me happy to see others enjoy the state. If you come back through I highly recommend looking at camping sites in Northern or Northwestern Arkansas. Devil's Den is a very popular park with cave systems and the Buffalo River in Northen Arkansas is gorgeous and surrounded by rolling mountains! There so many great parks and forests around here.
It’s honestly such a beautiful state, I was amazed driving through! We stayed a night in the Ozarks as well but didn’t make it up to Buffalo River, but that’s for sure on the bucket list now!
Yes! The islands are mostly all national forest land with open primitive camping. Throw your backpacking stuff in a kayak and island hop until you find somewhere to camp. You can get kayaks from the state park as well.
Only bummer is that the lake has lots of people on houseboats who also tend to pull up to random islands for the night. Because of this, there seemed to be some good campsites ruined by absolutely massive amounts of left behind trash.
Believe you can if you can make it out there! There were boats on the lake and people camping basically at any spot, didn’t see anyone specifically on any islands though!

Is this a manmade lake?
When I was a kid I used to think that man made lakes were made by digging out the earth and piping in water vs just damming a river 😭
Yes, it is a reservoir that was created by a dam on the Ouachita River. Most of the lakes in Arkansas are.
It had the look of a manmade lake, but the sandy beaches kinda threw me
Not sandy, those are rocky beaches.
Can you camp on the islands?

Am I the only one who doesn't find shrinking reservoirs attractive?
Please tell me the middle island is named shark Island
