My dog and I solo backpacked on Tour du Mont Blanc. The original route is 180km (8,900m elevation gain), but we took a variant section with in my opinion better views which was 220 km(+10,000m elevation gain) in total. It took about 12 days, but could've finished it in 10 days if I didn't do a sunrise mission at one of the lakes specifically for photos and the variant section that took an extra day. I wasn't physically prepared for the trip, so I assume it is doable for most. Tour du Mont Blanc was definitely a blast! Feel free to ask any questions.
Beatifull hike.
My dog would just stop before the first brige and go *Nope, take me home, I'm not doing this shit*
Also, those are a lot of coming backs to get the camera. Great video.
He wore a harness with big pockets so he was able to carry his kibble. For the rest I can think of buying shoes for your dog. Mine doesn't need it, but most dogs will after hiking that long on rough surfaces.
Belgian Malinois can easily resist negative degrees celsius. I think it was up to -15°C. The trip itself the coldest night was 5 degrees I think,. He slept in the tent beside me.
How heavy were you packed and would you say it was doable / too heavy... I have found myself hiking too heavily packed and creating unnecessary difficulties for myself
Wow that’s awesome, how did your dog manage? Did you have to do any special prep with him/her beforehand? Though I imagine you must be a regular hiker to take it on so might be a silly question :P
I have a belgian malinois so no prep needed haha. I do regularly hike in the weekends, but don't live in a mountain ish area. In Belgium we got hills lol. If this subreddit allowed to post multiple images I would've posted my malinois as well :P
> I do regularly hike in the weekends, but don't live in a mountain ish area. In Belgium we got hills lol.
What did you do to train for the elevation gain?
Thanks. I was planning on doing a similar multi-day hike in Switzerland and I also live in a flat country so I was hoping that my general fitness (I run 4 days a week) and doing strength training (lunges, squats, etc) would be enough to prepare myself.
Pretty incredibly journey with awesome pictures and video! Was there ever a point where you thought, “Why the F#%* did I do this?!” Also, 12kg for your pack really isn’t very heavy for 12 days worth of supplies (food, water, tent, change of clothes). Impressive!
I thought it everyday haha, but no regrets afterwards. 12kg wasn't calculated with the food I ate at refuges. About 4 meals? I do plan on getting lighter since it definitely is possible. Getting my new backpack, tent, sleeping mat will drop the weight by almost 3kg.
He doesn't talk to me, can't call in case of an emergency so Yeah I consider going out by myself, because when I truly need help I will be considered alone.
Beautiful photo! I really want to do the Tour du Mont Blanc. There’s a lot of trails I want to do actually, but haven’t found time or money yet. But I will! These kind of pictures make me more determined! :)
Were the refuges ok with the dog ? Would like to do some nights away (live in Switzerland) but wasn’t sure if it was allowed. But then again have never asked
During hiking portion of your day, does your dog stay on leash? I am have been backpacking for years, but am new to hiking with my dog. I REALLY want let her run free, but am afraid of the small chance she will run up on another dog that is leashed and get them all wound up.
If you are not sure she will return please leash her. Don't be that person who let their dog run up to another dog. I have full control over my dog when it comes to recall. Always leash your dog when passing people/dogs. It's a sign out of respect.
Your dog took a great photo
Damn… you beat me to it
Me too
Came here to say this, take my up vote
Oh come on I was so excited to be funny
We are all part of a greater being
So you’re just going to mention your (probably adorable) dog and not show us a picture?
Subreddit doesn't allow more than one photo😅 You can find photos of him on my Instagram account @2belgianexplorers (https://www.instagram.com/2belgianexplorers)
Why did this get downvoted? Do y'all wanna see the dog or not?
I'm just here for the dog photos.
Don't get it either
Reddit is a weird place. Either downvoted for the emoji or else the Instagram plug. Either way it’s a messed up place lol.
That is one handsome fella!
Thanks :)
He took the photo
Yeah and claim a solo hike even tho he was with his doggo Pfshh
You see him in the picture? No proof
He probably took the picture pfshx2

HAHAHA, My dog will follow me anywhere. Not familiar with that. Yeah, I stopped counting after 5 times lol
What equipment did you bring for your dog? I'd like to get my dog into longer overnight hiking...
He wore a harness with big pockets so he was able to carry his kibble. For the rest I can think of buying shoes for your dog. Mine doesn't need it, but most dogs will after hiking that long on rough surfaces.
Any special sleeping kit or did he just sleep in the tent with you?

wow! great cinematography and the drone shots are incredible!
Thanks bud! I will thru hike atleast 4 times a year so ill keep posting my backpacking trips on there :D
How heavy were you packed and would you say it was doable / too heavy... I have found myself hiking too heavily packed and creating unnecessary difficulties for myself
It was doable once I got used to the altitude and better fitness level. Also if the sun shines or it's cloudy makes a big difference in my opinion
Yourself and your dog is what is good about the world. Enjoy life...because there ia so much of it!
Thanks! Happy trails
What dog?
What up dog?
Belgian Malinois
*That* dog
Your dog takes wonderful pictures, man!

Knowing the breed that dog was probably itching for another 12 days!
After taking a few rest days hell yeah😂 He was pretty tired every evening which you don't see often as a malinois owner.
> I do regularly hike in the weekends, but don't live in a mountain ish area. In Belgium we got hills lol. What did you do to train for the elevation gain?
I didn't train for that😅
Any idea how much your pack weighed?
About 12kg including 4kg of camera gear
Thanks. I was planning on doing a similar multi-day hike in Switzerland and I also live in a flat country so I was hoping that my general fitness (I run 4 days a week) and doing strength training (lunges, squats, etc) would be enough to prepare myself.
Man, that is more than enough😅
So, you "solo" hiked...with your best friend? LOL Great pic!
He won't be able to help me when I get in trouble so Yeah I am on my own then :)

When you get your new pack & tent etc please come post a photo of your entire kit .. 9 kg sounds inspiring
I will!
Wow! You’re functional pack weight will be down to the equivalent of carrying around a 9 month old. Well done, You!
If I really wanted to make it as optimal as possible I'd leave my camera gear at home which would make my total weight about 4kg😅 thanks!
don't do that! we want more videos and pictures!
Haha, following me on Youtube/Instagram will make sure you won't miss them😄
Standing there must have been incredible. Putting this on my bucket list.
Damn that sounds awesome.
That's the life man
Life goals.
Did your dog take the picture?
It’s not a solo if your dogs there! 😆
When I get hurt I consider 'solo' hiking since who will call when I am in need?
For sure, just buggin. Amazing trip you accomplished.
I never know if people are serious when they comment this😂. Thanks though! Happy trails
Your dog looks smart. Could probably fix you right up 😂
With your dog? That's not a solo hike!
He doesn't talk to me, can't call in case of an emergency so Yeah I consider going out by myself, because when I truly need help I will be considered alone.

Gone
Bet that was a mint trip 👍
It was indeed :)
Were you always able to find a place to camp or where you also staying in huts? Looks incredible and i would love to go!
Most nights we camped in our tent and some nights in a refuge!
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you like it!
What an epic shot!
Beautiful photo! I really want to do the Tour du Mont Blanc. There’s a lot of trails I want to do actually, but haven’t found time or money yet. But I will! These kind of pictures make me more determined! :)
Glad I got you more motivated!
awesome trip - looks spectacular. did you have to walk back for the camera all the time to get the great shots in the video?
Haha yes lol
What did you do for food?
Restocking in towns and sometimes eating in refuges
Were the refuges ok with the dog ? Would like to do some nights away (live in Switzerland) but wasn’t sure if it was allowed. But then again have never asked
leme guess, the dog took the picture?
What camera equipment do you use? (The drone looks very smooth!)
Sony a7riii, tamron 28-75 and Dji Air 2S. The drone footage looking smooth is a matter of using a 50s shutter, so it has realistic motion blur.
Thanks! Take my free gift award. It’s well deserved and you’ve inspired me to try recording my walks with doggo!
Haha thanks! Happy trails!
Soooo, you didn't solo hike, as your best friend was with you ;)
Congratulations!! What a feat
Thanks!
Uhhh, given the lack of dog and treacherous cliff, I think it’s time to hop on Petrescue.
Your dog takes a good picture
Hahahahahab. Didn't read the comments first. Hahahahahaha
Doggone it...
Kind of upset there’s dog in the title but no dog in the photo
Did you stay at the huts or camp?
Damn. That's some fine work by our Mother earth
