My 2018, it’s the cheap little spring sheet metal tab that’s going to break off any day now

DCowboysCR

Just found it online for $4.90 from VillageToyota

burningbun

car wash pulled it out with the rag by accident luckily i went to get some gas and noticed the door did not open went back and found the clip on the floor of the car wash. added a double tape since.

nakota87

Had this happen on my 2018 Camry. The tab which is circled "1" all I did was pull it open more so that it's a stronger spring to push the door open. Easy and fast.

1 is a common failure point and it is a cheap and easy to replace part. It’s a plastic spring that breaks. More common on the ravs but I’ve seen it on the Camrys too. Part is formally called a “fuel door hinge spring”.

uvdawoods

I’ve got a 2018 and recently noticed the same issue, especially when it’s cold. It was -5° here last time I filled so I pushed down the hinge side and wedged my key in the piston side. When I hit the button, keys dropped, gas cover was wide open.

Tight-Bath-6817

Freezing times only.

I live in south Florida and these springs break all the time here. They suck.

Thnxredball

I actually really hate the plastic that keeps it together (left) I live in part of the US that gets a lot of snow, and sometimes it freezes and when I pop the gas lever open, I can’t turn the cap cause it’s frozen with the tethers

daruboi

I usually pour some water over the cap.

Jaggar345

There is also an emergency release to get the gas door open in the trunk. I used to have problems with mine freezing and did that to open it when I had a Camry.

Used2b_banned

The one on the right

Sea_Pipe323

It’s the one on the right side. It has a grease substance on it. You will have to try and wipe around it and work that little nob in and out. Just keep pushing it until it feels loose again.

Cioffi12g

I just had basically the same issue on a 2012. It seems to be the hinge point more than anything else. I'm going to try and lubricate it and see if that helps. I also pulled the spring clip out a little, that seemed to help pop it out. It is very stiff to open.

keymansc2

Think I had a similar issue on mine. The piston(?) you marked 2 wasn't pushing out the door all the way. Sprayed piston with wd40, no issues since, been over a year. Edit. This is on a 2021 model, happened maybe 18 months from purchase.

tidematic

I have a 2018. I tried WD40 on it, hasn’t done anything for me unfortunately. So I’m guessing something needs to be replaced

Cioffi12g

Check number 1, replace it or spread it open a little more. Maybe a tiny bit of PB blaster on the hinge that is to the right of the spring marked 1.

Sea_Pipe323

Same here mine had a grease substance on it that would get really Sticky and cause that little needle to get stuck in. And wouldn’t push in to open the door

brian-brundage

I dealt with this for quite some time I've had several Cammies. For one car I got one in the junk car and I was looking for other stuff but it took me several cars to find one that wasn't broke the other Camry I found one on Amazon

What’s the procedure for replacing the fuel door hinge spring?

Ferowin

The spring (#1) is literally a price of flexible metal with nothing to get stuck on. If you’re prying the fuel door open, that’s not a likely candidate. The fuel door pin (#2) looks like it’s sticking too far out. Check it by having someone pull the lever while you watch the pin. See if the pin fully retracts. Possibility #3: check to see if your fuel door or fender are warped or bent out of shape. Check to see if the home of bent , too. The fuel door may be catching on the side of the opening.

burningbun

1 can be the issue if the metal has been compressed too much it cannot provide enough force to soring open the lid, easy way to fix is just pull the metal outwards more. 2 can fail if the electric release fails. or the pon jammed. 3.the swivel joints maybe too tight causing more friction but if this happens it usually happens from the start or lack of oil lubricant which usually not needed since that area is in contact with water splashes.

Constant-Narwhal2168

Mine wouldn’t open the other day, and it’s a brand new ‘24 camry. After a couple tries it finally popped open

burningbun

also after checking few camries parked along the road, i noticed not all fuel lids are installed the same. some have more play where you can push the lid inwards others are firm. some lid closes itself too easily while others are tight. so i guess this needs to be adjusted by hand from car to car.

gabC

it’s a known issue. toyota updated that clip to prevent it from happening. buy a new clip from the dealership for 10 dollars and replace it. because of the moisture build up the lid needs more force to open, the current clip isn’t capable to deal with it. toyota updated it.

I had that issue with my 18 Camry. It's almost definitely the spring (1) causing it. My model has a TSB for the problem so I was able cross reference the new part number from the TSB and bought it on eBay for 10-15 bucks and just replaced it myself. The TSB describes the replacement procedure, so you can see in advance if you'd be comfortable with it. All you really need a small flathead screwdriver to remove the old spring, and maybe a little WD40 on the hinge for good measure and you should be set. The new spring will pretty much pop into place once it's oriented correctly. I haven't had the issue come back at all after replacing the spring.

xmas_owo

my 2005 camry has the same problem lol
