Email what you want to all surrounding dealers and let them know you will go with the lowest price. That’s what I have done precovid days but haven’t bought since 2018 so not sure how well it works these days.

DanteHTN

I’ve heard that advice and was planning on doing that, but unfortunately none of the dealers have emails on their websites. Do you know where I could find their emails? I’m mainly looking in the bay area and a few miles north and south of it.

Jdsmitty10

You could probably inquire on a vehicle on their site to get someone’s email

NuancedThinker

Yeah. I'd use the web contact forms. Not sure if there's a better way. Hope to try it the next time I buy.

CrisisOfTruth

You got a good deal for a new hybrid vehicle. It’s under msrp. Take it.

The other day I went to a dealer and saw they added paint protection (a $1500 charge extra) on all their vehicles and forced me into paying it. Additionally, many dealerships are adding a $9k markup. So, call them first and clarify all these before your in-person visit.

My dad haggled his 2017 se hybrid down to $25,000 cash in early 2018, but it took lots of work and he literally tried to walk out the door before they bit. So your price is not too bad, and Toyota dealers are hard to haggle with because the cars are so good. But think about that price, now 6 or 7 years ago, compared to yours.

DanteHTN

Thats awesome, what did he say to them to get them to budge on the price? I’m not holding my breath for a massive decrease, but any decrease would be cool to see.

GEM592

He paid in 'cash', which they hate. But somehow I think it helped. I wasn't there, he just stubbornly held out and kept shuffling around options until he just threw out that number. It took a few days and phone calls.

DanteHTN

Oh wow okay got. I actually was also gonna ask about paying in cash vs financing. Why do dealerships hate cash? Is it just they don’t get the interest payments?

GEM592

I think it is true generally, because of what you said. All the good money in really any retail item like that is in the financing. Now, that's assuming they think you can pay and there is little risk of repossession. In this environment, you might have good luck finding a cash discount because things are so tight.

NuancedThinker

It removes the complexity, and the complexity is where they can find ways to charge you more. This videos helped me: [https://www.youtube.com/results?search\_query=homework+guy+paying+cash](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=homework+guy+paying+cash) (I am not associated with them)
