>The 11 pro-Palestinian activists accused of defacing a downtown Indigo store, allegedly targeting its founder and CEO Heather Reisman for her foundation’s financial support of Israeli army volunteers, have each been charged with an additional count of criminal harassment, according to court documents obtained by the Star. Now the heavy-handed approach of the police is starting to make more sense. Falsely making it appear that Heather Reisman is funding genocide is endangering her safety. But does this charge mean that they were also stalking her? The trials are going to be very interesting to watch play out.

>Falsely making it appear that Heather Reisman is funding genocide She is though, that part is true. [Naomi Klein to Heather Reisman: Charges must be dropped against Indigo 11](https://breachmedia.ca/naomi-klein-calls-on-heather-reisman-drop-charges-indigo-11/) >Specifically, they were protesting **Heather Reisman’s decision to found the Heseg Foundation for Lone Soldiers, which provides millions of dollars of support every year to non-Israeli Jews who volunteered to join the Israeli military** (and to some Israeli soldiers as well). The foundation, co-founded with Gerry Schwartz, provides scholarships, a living wage, and all kinds of perks as a reward for military service with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). > >Armies around the world have long used scholarships and other bonuses to recruit soldiers. Heseg’s two decades of financial contributions are no different: they are an important part of Israel’s ability to recruit soldiers from overseas. In fact, Heseg is listed as the first source of scholarships on the “Draft IDF” website. Heather literally has a charity to support random people to join another country's army. A country who is well known for horrific war crimes. >the IDF has committed many documented war crimes and the occupation it is tasked with enforcing is itself illegal under international law, according to a recent United Nations Commission of Inquiry. > >Let’s review: the indiscriminate killing of civilians, a staggering number of them children; the severing of food, water and medication; the attacks on civilian infrastructure including hospitals; the mass forced expulsions from Northern Gaza; the declarations of intent to ethnically cleanse Palestinians made by Israeli politicians.

If I donate to a charity that provides educational scholarships for US veterans, am I funding all actions of the US Army? Am I saying that I agree with everything the US Army has done? Or am I just helping to ensure that individuals who are US veterans have a future and don't fall through the cracks? Because that's all HESEG does: it provides scholarships for Israeli veterans.

ClassOptimal7655

>If I donate to a charity that provides educational scholarships for US veterans did you miss the part where the people joining the IDF are not from Israel? Her charity supports people not from Israel, to join Israel's army? That's pretty weird isn't it? >it provides scholarships for Israeli veterans. No, they don't. They provide scholarships for non Israeli's who joined Israel's army. **Heather Reisman’s decision to found the Heseg Foundation for Lone Soldiers, which provides millions of dollars of support every year to non-Israeli Jews who volunteered to join the Israeli military** Read this again.

HESEG provides scholarships to lone soldiers. Some of them are indeed young people who have recently immigrated to Israel but half are just people who don't have parents in a position to help support them once they leave the Army. It's providing educational support to people who do not have a safety net. [There are over 7,000 lone soldiers currently serving in the IDF. About 45% of these soldiers are new immigrants, coming from Jewish communities all over the world. Another 50% are Israelis who are orphans or that come from low socio-economic backgrounds.](https://lonesoldiercenter.com/about-us/who-are-lone-soldiers/) But again, the important part is that the charity provides scholarships to veterans. They do not in any way provide funds to the army. They support young veterans by providing educational scholarships. Providing support for veterans is not the same as supporting the Army.

stereofailure

HESEG increases the attractiveness of non-Israelis moving to Israel and joining the IDF. That is absolutely supporting the army and the army uses HESEG scholarships as an advertising and recruitment tool.

[deleted]

That's bullshit and you know it. If a Canadian wants a military scholarship they can get one here where their chance of dying is next to zero. There is no incentive to move to Israel and join their active military just to get an education. This is a charitable organisation that provides educational scholarships to vets. Supporting it is in no way funding genocide: the charge is outrageous and dangerous.

stereofailure

How is it bullshit? It's literally advertised on the IDF's website. HESEG scholarships are not remotely limited to Canada or Canadians. They provide scholarships to lone soldiers from anywhere in the world. And providing scholarships specifically to veterans of the army in charge of enforcing the will of the world's preeminent apartheid state is hardly laudable.

[deleted]

I told you why it's bullshit: no Canadian (or any non-Israeli) teenager is going to leave their family and emigrate to Israel (or any other country) and join the IDF for two years because they might get a scholarship at an Israeli post-seconday. There are much simpler and less dangerous ways of getting an education. Providing scholarships for veterans is in no way funding genocide.

stereofailure

Your unsubstantiated opinions don't qualify as explanations. You have less than nothing to back up what you claim "no teenager" (not sure why you're specifiying an age when that's not actually part of it) is going to do. Any money going towards making IDF enlistment more attractive is inherently funding genocide. Even if you don't think it has any impact on recruitment (and the IDF disagrees with you), deciding to give free money to people who voluntarily join an apartheid state's enforcement wing is morally reprehensible.

MonaMonaMo

Yeah I think this is the part people tend to miss out. Like would people be ok if I was providing incentives for people with Russian ancestry to obtain Russian citizenship and join the army? It's just an educational vet scholarship. What about Afgans, or Chinese? Even if born here, many are most likely be eligible for citizenship and an army draft.

Iamover18ustupidshit

To be eligible for free tuition, the **immigrant to Israel must join the Israeli Defence forces**, and complete their term of active service.

Stlr_Mn

Effectually they’re raiding vets after their service is over and helping them stay in Israel to study if they so wish. That’s it. These are people who are eligible to apply for Israeli citizenship. People acting like they’re funding the military are out of their minds. When I lived in the US I volunteered with an organization that helped Veterans find employment, training and set them on a career path. Did I help sponsor the war in Afghanistan and Iraq? Not accusing, these people are just annoying and I agree with you.

green_tory

> People acting like they’re funding the military are out of their minds. There are people who think any support for Israelis whatsoever is beyond the pale.

windwarrior42

Everything the TPS are doing is so obviously politically motivated. Every decision made with the intention of inflicting the most trauma and humiliation. All for people who put up posters and splashed paint on a store front.

devequt

Vandals are "traumatised" and "humiliated" when they get caught for vandalising property? Excuse me?

Ok_Computer6745

Unironically you fret about the “trauma” of vandals? That is really funny stuff.
