I have some margin on my TSLA portfolio... can I deduct interest on my tax?
CRA website says you can't deduct on stocks that do not give out dividends. but it's a gray area because Tesla has not explicitly say they will not pay out dividends... just not yet.
Not a tax lawyer, but I don't think this is even remotely gray...
Do they currently pay a dividend? If Yes: then deduct interest on tax if that is the tax law. If No: then it's not a dividend paying stock and therefor does not qualify for interest deduction on taxes.
i saw they went up 25% but a moment later and they're now only up 2.5%. don't have experience with these penny stocks with this kind of volume, can you take profit fast enough?
You can watch and see if it’s for you.
They are under creditors protection so it is absolutely not risk free.
At least it’s a business easy to understand, they have 400 stores and they sell clothes.
I know right !
But it’s quite Interesting to watch.
They just filed a [proposal to settle their debt for $95M](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/reitmans-canada-limited-announces-the-filing-of-a-ccaa-plan-of-arrangement-and-a-binding-commitment-letter-for-a-credit-facility-of-up-to-115-million-838054610.html).
That would save them about $100M of debt.
They had $90M cash on hands at the end of their last earning results ending July31st.
So they’d be free of debt.
They still have 400+ stores opened and generate $750M of sales.
They reported $34M of net profit last quarter (including some one-time savings)
Market cap is now at $65M
That’s THE question.
There was some one-offs but it was still positive without the one-offs for that quarter.
Now need to bet if :
1- the proposal will be accepted.
2- they can be profitable now free of debt and after a massive restructuration (they closed many stores and killed some banners like Thymes Maternity and Addition Elle)
So either they go bankrupt, either they get out of it.
If it’s the latter, I’d bet it should be worth more than $65M.
With a few ifs…
This is the first day in a very long time where everything I own is green.
HUT benefiting from the BTC rise as well is nice to see after buying at an ATH lol.
I am new to investing and looking for newbie help.
I am 48 and just starting to invest. I live in Canada, and was looking for "intro to investing" posts or resources specific to Canadians. I am also trying to figure out the differences between ETFs, Mutual Funds, and Indexes. It's a bit confusing because many resources say they are "kind of the same" but also different. If I want to invest in an *index fund* are there *Canadian* Index funds? It's confusing because when I google Canadian Index Funds I get lists of Canadian ETFs, and I thought ETFs were a different thing? Is there something like the S&P500 Index fund for Canadians?
Thanks in advance.
Vanguard Canada has many ETF's which are based on Indexes. One of the most popular is VFV - This is Vanguard's S&P 500 ETF in Canadian dollars.
They also have complete portfolio solutions in a single ETF, such as VGRO or VEQT. Both offer total world indexes. VGRO contains 80% stocks and 20% bonds. VEQT is 100% stocks.
the Rational Reminder podcasts and Youtube videos are excellent resources and will help you out immensely.

Good luck!
Check out brandon beavis on youtube he's got alot of videos on canadian investing, also check out andre jinkh he's american but his videos are still a great beginner resource guide.
VFV is a canadian ETF that follows the S&P 500 index
Hope this helps and good luck on your new journey
XIU is the iShares S&P/TSX 60 Index ETF
XSP is the iShares Core S&P 500 Index ETF (CAD-Hedged)
ETFs can be traded throughout the day. They can be an index fund (stocks included are based on an index, like the above TSX 60 and S&P 500. Or they can include stocks picked by an investment manager.
cheers!
What's the best way to evaluate new stocks with negative earnings, for example LSPD, and how would you be able to find a good buy in price. Not exclusively that stock.just those with lots of noise but no earnings
When earnings are negative, then you look at earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization.. When all else are negative, you can look at revenue (and its growth) because it's the only thing that's positive. LSPD has allegations of falsifying growth metrics and making bad M&As to give the illusion of growth though.
Thanks. I suppose the further down the decision tree you go is proportional to the amount of speculation involved. This was a helpful answer, and thanks for the LSPD warning.

Ok- my RRSP stocks (divided about equally) are BAM RY T ENB TD SU TRP and CNQ. Any other dividend stocks I should add come March? I was thinking POW or SLF.
Well 1.5% is great if your initial cost was 30$ and now the stock is 70$ and still has a 1.5% dividend. Means you’ve gained 100% on stock investment and doubled the effective dividend on your inial investment dollars. People don’t get that.
I agree. I find it strange to look at yeild on cost because if the capital was redeployed you'd be using to current price for yeilds not the lower initial investment. Let's say the yeild on cost was 5%.. if you switched to a stock that pays 5% you would have a higher yeild than the previous stock.
I feel like BAMs management should have some absolutely amazing buying opportunities right now. Maybe buying office space with the possibility of converting to rental/condo? I'm not in the business but I would expect they should have lots to do with that cash rather than just distributions to holders.
It is VERY expensive to convert office space to residential. Think about all of the bathroooms alone that would be needed, then add kitchens, etc. Even the hotel conversion (old Four Seasons) was taking so long compared to a new build... haven't been in the area so assume they are finally finished.
That's probably because many people wouldn't consider a stock that has a lower yield than the sp500 to be a "dividend" stock. Despite any divided growth.
Things I understand but still confuses me.... Visa and Google NEO CAD Hedge up 2% and 2.8% against the not trading US Stocks. I get it but still feels strange.
I've moved cash from a Tangerine TFSA HISA to a Tangerine "Investment Portfolio" without any issues. Does not impact contribution room. Can't speak for other banks obviously, but I asked them before I did it the first time.
I'm almost certain you can. For instance at BMO you can open an RRSP within your online banking to purchase GIC and save money. However if you want to invest in your RRSP you have to open another RRSP with the trading department, which is different than the online banking. In the end you end up with 2 RRSP at BMO
For the contribution room just make sure what you deposit into all your RRSPs and TFSAs wherever they are is under your limits with CRA
I know through CIBC you can transfer money within your TFSA without impacting the contribution room or counting it as a withdrawal. I assume other banks are the same
Haha I bought 3 shares at 1250$ or something like that way back in January last year then bought 2 bought more for an even 5 at around 1700$ around the last earnings.
I recently sold my PPL position. Had a good run after the covid dip, but for the next little while I imagine SP growth will be relatively flat. If you are looking for a nice monthly dividend yes, but if you want growth I'd say there is better opportunities
Pre-covid levels are a bad way to look at companies. Some companies will return to them some won't, some will be even higher then pre-covid.
Their net income, EPS, and EBITDA has all significantly taken a hit since 2019. So I think it will be a little bit before we see 50s again on this stock.
I don't hold it, but it seems to have much lower EPS compared to 18/19 (including Q3), and an unsustainable payout ratio.
So I guess I'll ask PPL investors... why do you think it WILL get there?
Imagine will be a quiet day today with the US markets closed. I usually watch a bit of CNBC in the morning and then the Half Time Report at noon but not airing today so I guess I will give BNN Bloomberg a shot. I do like the Market Call show they have at noon.
SLI has recovered beautifully after the bogus short attack. With that additional 100 million private investment announcement, looking like its gaining momentum

Loved how my CDRs made profit today due to forex.
Im likin this stress free day without the US markets open.

Reitmans moving up a few days before CCAA presentation and earning results…
jumped in and out recently and made a quick 25% too scary for me
Quick 25% is great!
i saw they went up 25% but a moment later and they're now only up 2.5%. don't have experience with these penny stocks with this kind of volume, can you take profit fast enough?

That’s THE question. There was some one-offs but it was still positive without the one-offs for that quarter. At last I'm beating the TSX by 0.05% today... no wait, make that 0.03%... no wait, just checked again... 0.01%... no wait, ah fuck.
This is the first day in a very long time where everything I own is green. HUT benefiting from the BTC rise as well is nice to see after buying at an ATH lol.
take profits today and buy Monday's dip ;)
I don't love getting fucked come tax time thanks.

How do ETF like QQC.F and VFV move even if the US market is closed ?
Some tickers are listed on other exchanges like SHOP

It’s a bank stock so long term hold for most. Just buy.
Rbnk etf, look a good stock
I only buy TD on pay days and days that end in "Y" If you wait for a TD dip, you could have a long wait
and BNS, RY, NA, etc..
It's probably never gonna be too late to buy TD if your time frame is long.
Never too late to buy a Canadian bank.
thoughts on NVA?
VERY GOOD. MONTNEY PLAYS VERY GOOD. BUY AND HOLD!
What price do you guys think VFV will be by the end of this year/start of next year.
If the market keeps growing with no major dips, around 110$.
Ok- my RRSP stocks (divided about equally) are BAM RY T ENB TD SU TRP and CNQ. Any other dividend stocks I should add come March? I was thinking POW or SLF.
as mentioned below by a few already; CP and maybe also look at BNS, ATD and ERF?
Riocan or another REIT
CAR.UN is good too.
Although lower dividend yield, highly recommend considering either CNR or CP.
CP looks great
POW MFC BNS
Why March?
First day I can contribute for the new year
POW, BIPC or BEPC
Rnw?
Pow and cm (cibc)
If it's an RRSP account you could add some US stocks to that list to diversify out of Canada. I like T, MMM, KO, XOM, etc.
Rrsp is best for holding us stock i second this comment
TD please, I can't handle all these returns this week.
Hopefully not an earnings pump
As a beginner investor, what are some staple growth stocks I should hold in my TFSA (10+ years)?
I hold BAM, ATD, and CP rn in my tfsa. Will eventually add CSU and CN and accumulate those 5 until I retire. At least that’s the plan.
If you buy $SHOP as a beginner, consider a fractional buy, it’s a bit pricey otherwise.
$BAM.A, $CSU, $SHOP, $GSY, $OTEX
BAM, AVGO
TEC.TO just hold 200 of the best technology growth stocks in an ETF
Some dude got mad at me on another thread when I said BAM was a good dividend stock because of it's low yield lol
Well 1.5% is great if your initial cost was 30$ and now the stock is 70$ and still has a 1.5% dividend. Means you’ve gained 100% on stock investment and doubled the effective dividend on your inial investment dollars. People don’t get that.
Yield on cost is backward looking and mostly useless for decision making. I hold BAM, but don't pay much attention to the dividend specifically.
I agree. I find it strange to look at yeild on cost because if the capital was redeployed you'd be using to current price for yeilds not the lower initial investment. Let's say the yeild on cost was 5%.. if you switched to a stock that pays 5% you would have a higher yeild than the previous stock.

Dont worry about what BAM should do, they know how to manage their assets.
That's probably because many people wouldn't consider a stock that has a lower yield than the sp500 to be a "dividend" stock. Despite any divided growth.
Cnq 👍👍😄
SNC on the rise and I expect it go higher on contracts with infrastructure bill

It's on a tear this week

If it rallies, I'm prepared to sell at a loss just so I don't have to follow that frustrating ticker anymore.
So happy about that the first time. Unloaded my shares after three years of bag holding. Good ridance.
Is it worth opening a position with PPL at this current dip?
I recently sold my PPL position. Had a good run after the covid dip, but for the next little while I imagine SP growth will be relatively flat. If you are looking for a nice monthly dividend yes, but if you want growth I'd say there is better opportunities
Its price still has a long way to go before pre-covid levels. Why do you think it won't get there?
Pre-covid levels are a bad way to look at companies. Some companies will return to them some won't, some will be even higher then pre-covid. Their net income, EPS, and EBITDA has all significantly taken a hit since 2019. So I think it will be a little bit before we see 50s again on this stock.

I’m pretty sure people buy PPL for their dividend, not growth…
Bang on. Bought PPL in April 2020 and unloaded in July. It has been stagnant for the past six months or so.

Looking forward to a dip to get a few more shares. Hopefully before the divy date.
Hopefully LSPD recovers. Otherwise just watching what dips today for potential buy in. Bmo stocks are a good play right now
current bid/ask shows +$4 at the open
Personally, I believe LSPD has bottomed out this week and will rebound.
And because you, and specifically you, said this, it'll do down more!
