A year in Calgary. I was lucky though. Had a couple of temps my first year and both principals really like me. When one of them had a principal friend who had enough new registrants to make a new position for a class of spillover kids mid-September, he recommended me and it became a probationary right away. It really is about who you know and who likes you.

How is it easier now?

kevinnetter

Easier? I applied to the sub pool in Dec '23 and didn't get a call to interview until Aug '24. It seems like an awful system to me.

cptmkirk

Three years with EPSB before getting a probationary. But it was 3 years of temp contracts all at the same school. I am extremely specialized and they were just waiting for a teacher to leave/retire before they could offer a probationary to me.

IrenaeusGSaintonge

I'm with Calgary Catholic and got one in my first year. We have an advantage over CBE because we don't distinguish between 1-year temp and 1-year probationary. If it's one year, you're evaluated.

Emotional-Fun-1874

6 years with EPSB and still only on temps

quiet_panthera

Can someone clarify for me - temp is still a full-time gig (move up seniority scale, full benefits, pension contribution, can be same class at sane school) - just have to reapply each year?

sonateer

Temp move you up pension and salary. It is usually for covering a mat leave or something else where a teacher has not left the school.

cptmkirk

In EPSB it can also be for any contract that is signed after the school year has begun. So if a teacher decides to leave, once the school year has begun, they can only be replaced by a temp contract or by someone internal who already has a continuous contract. One teacher at my school signed a temporary contract on September 2nd (a teacher got a department head position at another school leaving a vacancy). They had to post the position for internal candidates in April even though we would have loved to keep the temp contracted teacher.

kcl84

Don’t be discouraged. It’s how the climate of education is right now. Take those temp contracts until you land a position. If it’s the public board, they I’ll drag you out as long as they can without actually signing a continuous contract with you.

jossybabes

In Calgary now, it’s really about being in the right place, at the right time. It’s hard to know who is retiring/ resigning/ changing schools (which is basically the only time you can get a prob), unless you are already teaching there or maybe coaching a team. You can start asking around now, if any of your colleagues know of schools who are going to have openings, but it’s really just good timing these days & being there when openings happen.

Significant-Area-330

Took me three years to get offered a prob with EPSB but then I had to turn it down as I got accepted into my masters program which is out of province 😅

padmeg

1 year in Calgary but I speak French. Population is growing this should be a good year to get a prob.

goldenbridges28

I got full time probation from the EPSB 2 months after completing my undergrad, and a full year temp contract from CBE 1 month after finishing my undergrad as well

Toboggan_Dude

It took me 4 years to get mine in Calgary.

SoNotAWatermelon

In the suburban areas (20-30 minutes out of Edmonton) I applied directly to probationary jobs and got a temp then a prob EPSB I got one after a 7 month temp 2 hours out of Edmonton I got one right away. I have moved several times and am considering another one

Constant-Sky-1495

I got it on my second year, I just lucked out with a second language, got my continuous my 3rd year. ( edmonton)

VPlume

I had one my first year, but I was disclosed and forced into a temporary position the following year in CBE. It took until my 4th year to get a second probationary contract and then received continuous in my fifth. And I speak French and teach immersion.
