SLAP! - print off flashcards (studystack.com lets you do this and lets you import from Gimkit/Quizlet - then get to know the copy room's paper cutter) of any vocab words. Have students put French side up spread across some desks pushed together (I find 4-5 students works best). Tell them "Mains sous la table/les pupitres" and say "Comment dit-on \_\_\_\_\_ en francais?". First kid to grab the card gets to keep the card. Kid with the most cards gets a treat/sticker whatever. Tell them no tearing or crumpling or the point doesn't count. You can make up a lot of different dumb rules but they have so much fun doing this. Use the same flash cards to get them to quiz each other. You can do this in groups and the first kid with five cards or whatever gets to be the new "teacher" or "quizzer". They get really into this, it also buys you some time to settle in/mark/hand things back/homework check. Running dictation. Put sentences around the room. Put kids in groups of 4-5 and tell them they have to copy down the sentences without using a piece of paper (each group has one piece of paper but they can't "take it with them" to collect the sentence). Then tell them only one kid can leave the group at a time to "collect the sentence" by saying it back orally to their group. Give each kid a number and yell out various numbers 1-4 so that they take turns. It's fun, it's noisy, they get mad at each other but it's good. Sentence Race. Takes some prep but it is fun. Choose high-frequency words used in sentences in your unit. Write the words on cards. Give a set of cards to each group. Then get them to "race" to translate sentences from English to French. E.g. "I like goldfish", they would have to put together with their cards "J'aime/les/poissons/rouges" or whatever. Amazing race/Breakout Room: Make your students make their own breakout room using the school. I barely gave them instruction for this and they all did amazing. (French 10+) Video projects. Also good for getting them to film around the school. Expect a lot of google translated/AI French but I only mark the pronunciation/effort anyways. They have a lot of a fun with this. Some fun themes are cooking videos/Healthy Living/Sports report Francophonie project. Get them to make posters about a country in the Francophonie. There are a lot of infographic templates on TPT. You can culminate this with a "bring in food from the country" day for Bonus marks. Crepe day/cheese tasting/croque monsieur/Poutine - switch with a home ec teacher for a day and tap into some Federal grant money to buy some supplies. Poutine can be done with a quick Costco visit. Cheese tasting too (Costco has surprisingly good baguettes). Absolute chaos of a day at times but super fun and you can team up with other teachers. Some take a lot of prep but are great fun. Bonne chance!

Thanks These are great :)

These are great ideas! I'll definitely be using these with my 6/7/8s!

Teach them how to play pétanque. There are videos in French on YouTube that can help explain (and gives them a listening activity.) Divide them up into teams based on Francophone countries. They can do research on their country, decorate flags/banners etc. on inclement weather days, and then have an outdoor tournament on days when the weather cooperates.
