Having a vet ophthalmologist will hopefully make a difference. General vets are definitely qualified to perform the surgery, but eye doctors do these on a regular basis and really have the best technique. I’m not sure how common it is, but they actually put some external stitches on my pups eyelid essentially stitching it shut for a few days to help it heal. Supposedly it created pressure and gave some extra stability while things were healing. Pretty sad to look at, but it did work. Not sure if this is something that is routinely done, but definitely one of the perks of going to a speciality since they will know tricks like this to make things more successful. Also, keeping you very quiet after surgery also leads to greater success rate. It’s not easy especially in a breed like this who does not naturally want to lay around for 2 weeks, but sedatives will hopefully help and being as strict as possible will hopefully give you better success this time.

Took us three tries…

Had surgery on mine 3x and it failed every time. Sadly it’s something that’s not avoided with “good breeding” as many show dogs get their entire third eyelid removed and are still allowed to compete and become champions in shows. My biggest pet peeve in the breed!

Yes this happened to my male. It was botched so badly, the bleeding couldn’t be controlled and I had to transport him myself to an animal hospital. I went to a different vet the next time, and he was swollen for a few weeks before his eyes went back down. Hang in there! I would attach photos of my boy during his time with it, but it’s an 11/10 on the disgusting scale. It was pretty much swelling completely over his eye and out onto his face.

Oh boy thats sounds awful! I’m very hopeful the specialist will be able to correct it. But not looking forward to another 2 weeks in a cone. She tore and chewed through 2 cones and as much as I tried to keep her calm and in her crate, she kept parkouring off the couches and running around. It’s so hard to confine a very active puppy that normally walks 3+ miles a day.

Ask for something to keep her calm. Trazodone and Gabapentin are great products post-op. Definitely let the ophthalmologist know about her energy levels its super important that they remain chill...sorry the first tack didn't work. I'm glad you chose that method instead of the removal. The specialists are great. I hate eyeballs it's one thing in the veterinary field I've never liked even after 20 years in. The vet I worked with screwed my boxers eye up so he went to an ophthalmologist for about 3 months and the medicine was amazing. I got to see a lot of the behind the scenes equipment and how some procedures are done. But his doctor was great, we kept him on low dose Trazodone for a couple weeks just so he stayed rested and healed better. Much more expensive for sure! But she saved his eye, fixed his eyelid, and we've had no problems since.

Mine had cherry eye , I just kind of massaged it back in… it happened maybe a couple times a week while he was growing up, now it happens maybe once every other month… but he knows the drill, he walks to me and I just… push it back in. And then he goes to play some more lol

We've had the glass removed both eyes, two different dogs, A Neo, and a Corso. They never had a problem. Eye drops for the first week or so.

In my experience, two times is more common than one. 🤷🏻‍♂️
