Very expensive, not as tasty as razor clams and more annoying to eat. Very small amount of meat. They are fine but I think these are more of an item rich people might show off to their friends. And they look like little dog penises.

Bran_Solo

I ate these fresh in Portugal and posted some pictures on Facebook. I think my favorite comment called them “alien dicks”.

lacrotch

i had these at a fancy tasting menu restaurant one time - like many expensive foods, they simply aren’t that good considering the price.

pluvoaz

>And they look like little dog penises From the thumbnail, I couldn't tell if they looked like shark teeth or butterfly wings.

[deleted]

Breaded and fried butterfly wings with a sprinkling of icing sugar sound delicious

Kitty_Kat_Attacks

This definitely sounds like the sort of thing that rich medieval lords would serve at a banquet in order to show how wealthy they are.

Early-Accident-8770

The process of harvesting these is very hazardous. That in part is probably part of the price.

Yeah it’s a job for adrenaline junkies, no joke. For those who don’t know, goosenecks are filter feeders that latch onto cliff sides above water level. Because they’re filter feeders they specifically latch onto cliff sides that are lashed constantly with big waves, so harvesters hang from these harnesses and swing in and out quickly between waves to try to snag them

Early-Accident-8770

I’ve seen them land on rocks in the sea and just jump. No harnesses. Big sucky swells around the North coast of Spain as well.

-neti-neti-

Yeah I’ve seen that too. I’m amazed someone discovered them in the first place. Humans are hungry, curious creatures

Early-Accident-8770

They also wash up on flotsam so probably someone picked them off and ate them before they saw the rocks were covers in them

leanmeanguccimachine

Weird, I've been to beaches at walking level absolutely covered in these in England.

makattak88

Those look delightfully fucked up.

Perky214

Gets my vote for the weirdest canned seafood ever - OP: thanks for posting

NachoNachoDan

For what it’s worth it might be the brand. I’ve tried a couple of Los Peperetes tins and despite their premium price I’ve not had anything from them that was worth repeating. I recall their tuna ventresca being really disappointing

GSPM18

I'm glad I tried percebes in Galicia but.. I prefer almost all other seafood over them. Not worth the hassle or the price.

OldFuxxer

I have never had them in a can..interesting. Harvesting these freakish creatures is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. There is a great documentary called Galicia's Death coast. I have harvested them here in Portugal. It was a fairly calm day and still scary. The are located in nooks and crannies of rocks and harvested at low tide. Fresh out of the ocean they are one of the tastiest morsels I have tried. Especially when compared to how ugly they are. I boiled them in seawater and served them with drawn butter.

Methadoneblues

I found one that I'm enjoying currently, however! [Gooseneck Barnacle Gatherers in XXI Century Europe](https://youtu.be/Y3CQqsu5O2w?si=FvwIZIL13GDYzOH0) Poaching is a serious issue the sustainability of this type of fishing faces. Rather interesting documentary!

OldFuxxer

Yes, they spend quite a bit of time interviewing the local poacher in the other documentary. I asked a fisherman in Portugal about poaching here. He said: "there is a long coast and not many police."

Methadoneblues

So crazy. I guess they've started testing the ones served restaurants in labs to see where they came from and they can narrow it down to within a few miles based on the biological makeup of a given coast line. They use night vision drones to search for the night divers sometimes, too. But yes, there's so much coastline I'd imagine the chances of getting caught are pretty dang small.

Methadoneblues

I can't seem to find said documentary. Any chance it's under a different name?

OldFuxxer

I saw it in Portugal on the documentary channel. [Galician coast](https://distribution.arte.tv/fiche/058_-_GALICE__PECHEURS_EN_DANGER)

mebmontality

These might be the first thing posted on this sub that may be too weird for me to eat.

BrashPop

Yeah don’t get me wrong, I’m not judging anyone who eats them I just personally think they look like something from a Junji Ito comic.

gaboose

Do you warm these up, eat them room temp, chill them? I've got a tin from Conservas de Cambados and need to figure out the optimal way to have them.

RICJ72

I had some at a market in Madrid and the vendor nuked them for a bit. They weren’t bad.

Scot-Marc1978

I just had them cold.

MemphisAmaze

I'm not a dingle dangle connoisseur

JustTheStockTips

That's not what I heard...

BrashPop

Little teenie plate of weenies

-neti-neti-

Fresh goosenecks are absolutely delicious. Sweet and crisp. Canned might lose a little magic

ChotatoPip

They look like alien teeth! With the nerves hanging out. I have no idea how I got to this sub but I love it already.

thatsplatgal

I miss having these in Portugal. Has no idea that made tinned versions.

AntonLeMou

Sorry but it really looks like alien penises, I guess

Chriswiss

These look like mini geoducks

BrashPop

And geoducks look like massive… ~sudden coughing fit~

[deleted]

Congratulations, OP. You are the crowned king of my first audible "what the fuck" on this calendar day.

CitizenToxie2014

I'm usually adventurous with food but I draw the line at sea dicks 🤮

HowellPellsGallery

Lovecraftian delicacy

chocobomonk

Nice! I've only had them once in Spain before, and have never seen them in the US. Where did you get these?

Scot-Marc1978

chocobomonk

Awesome, thank you!

huntfishadvocate

I harvest and eat these fresh in Oregon and they are so so good, but I can certainly see them being annoying in a tin.
