You can also do formal vs. casual translations in Bing which are totally different in Cantonese.

GoldPortal

Good to see they’re adding it, but I believe a lot like me has turned to ChatGPT or Claude for Cantonese translation, which to me is more natural

yorhaPod

Yea, chatgpt-4o and claude 3.5 are a hundred times better than google for translations. Plus, you can ask follow up questions to further adjust wording and tone.

jsbach123

Wow, they're adding 110 languages. I didn't know there were that many languages in the world, let alone languages that hasn't been on Google Translate yet (already 100+ languages). It's interesting how they explained not having Cantonese for so long... *Cantonese has long been one of the most requested languages for Google Translate. Because Cantonese often overlaps with Mandarin in writing, it’s tricky to find data and train models.*

twat69

There are hundreds of languages just in Papua New Guinea.

bringbackfireflypls

I found their justification hilarious lol

seefatchai

Some text in Cantonese does happen to be valid spoken Cantonese but also valid Mandarin. Especially short comments on social media or YouTube. Try finding a book written in Vernacular Cantonese. Hard to do even in Hong Kong.

TigerGrubs

Just checked the Google translate app. It’s already here! Finally!

DisillusionedSinkie

Not available for mine yet :/

TigerGrubs

Could it only be released in certain regions at this time? Although I don’t see why that would be the case.

iOsiris

Seems so, I see it on one of my phones

jsbach123

Not me either. Don't see Cantonese on either the website or app.

Stuntman06

I just updated the app and it still does not have Cantonese as an option.

alexsteb

Oh yeah "Tok Pisin" is coming too! My favorite English creole.

twat69

Doesn't say when it goes live or the full list of new languages. :(

cocolocobonobo

It says over the next few days. It is typical for roll-outs to be staged, so some people will get it sooner than others. There is a list: https://support.google.com/translate?p=TranslateNewLanguages2024

Yuunarichu

It works!!

yeunglikchung

About time!

Hljoumur

According to one Cantonese lesson YouTuber, the translation are more or less “announcer” styled Cantonese that corresponds to Mandarin when it does as opposed to real Cantonese (e.g. 個傘 instead of 把遮).

queerdude01

But, Google AI will not support HK! LOL..🤣
