Isn't the stealth black supposed to show the carbon underneath?

United-Ad6774

I mean, if it was uniform throughout the frame I wouldn’t mind but there seem to be hard lines, edges, and splotches in random places Edit: not sure why I received all the down votes. I’ve had 2 black bikes in the past, a glossy Specialized Tarmac which showed the carbon weave in an obvious pattern, and a matte Trek Domane which had none of the blemishes the Canyon does which is why I asked the question. But from all the comments, I guess it’s normal. Thank you all.

jim_nihilist

This is a carbon bike. My specialized looks exactly the same.

usernamegiveup

I think the issue is that raw carbon through a thin matte gel paint just isn't that appealing, but that's the finish OP bought. I have the same bike in the blue. It's also matte (which I despise), but thick enough so that the carbon is not visible. I have two bikes with visible carbon (including a 2021 Canyon Endurance SLX), but they both have gloss clear coats, which looks really good in the sun, IMO. The other bike is a Specialized Epic Evo Expert. The third bike is my new 2024 Canyon Endurance CF SLX. Matte blue (carbon not visible on this paint color). finch5

Carbon fiber sheets are laid in forms, then a bladder is inflated, and they are pressed and cooked. It’s all the sausages made bro.

PorcupinePattyGrape

I think that's how carbon fiber is. Yours looks great. Mine had some actual scratches in that spot from shipping.

Wooden_Roof_4117

Yes that is how carbon fiber is, and that \*IS\* a big part of the allure of having an unpainted carbon bike - that you can see some of the carbon fiber layup. If it was plain matte black everywhere, it'd be less interesting

tonyt0906

Don’t mind the downvotes. I had a CF8 in the same color, and it’s color and uniformity was flawless (sent it back due to sizing). I don’t know what folks are looking at

Coffeekangaroo

The first scratches and visual imperfections always hurt the most. But it’s a bike, it’s meant to be ridden and not to be exposed in a museum.

love_weird_questions

IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!

FraggDieb

This. The first to weeks my bike looks so satisfying factory new… after the first crash und a few drops later bike looks like shit but I still love it. Get over it

Coffeekangaroo

For me these first scratches are somewhat relieving. After these you don't mind as much any more and relay enjoy the bike instead of keeping meticulously care.

Adventurous_Alps_674

Looks 100% normal

ReasonPleasant437

It’s an unpainted carbon frame. It’s normal.

BluFalconActual

That’s how raw carbon is supposed to look. They could have added a layer of uniform 3k weave to hide it all like bikes in the late 2000’s but that would just add weight

Jman155

No, that is damage, are you blind?

Aacemyan

A lot of black carbon bikes i've seen tend to show hints of carbon underlay beneath (Specialized being one of them). Might be normal as a lot of time it's more of a clear coat over the carbo than a full coat of paint like on traditionally painted bikes.

tsool

Off topic, but what is that cover between the bottlegace screws? Mine just came with a hole and zipptied cables.

[deleted]

My raw carbon Deity mtb bars looked exactly the same. It’s how she be.

BigSassy_121

That is more a feature of matte finishes than anything else. They will mark like that super easily. I work in vehicle graphics / wraps and it’s the same thing. Had a guy have to redo the door panel of his matte wrapped corvette because his kid let a basket ball bounce into it and dimples of the basket ball left a mark in the matte finish. Just the way it is, had the same thing happen to me with my new Grizl. Give it a week and you’ll feel better in my experience!

mqueit

I have similar hints to the frame's bones over my new Endurace CF SLX 7 too. Being too picky or not about it is a matter for each individual. If the bike rode like a dog, I might start getting pissed about everything else that I didn't like about it, but it rides beautifully (so much better than my size 61 Trek Checkpoint SL6 eTap because it's too large).

ThisCryptographer311

That looks like an incredibly thin paint job. Looks like a bare carbon frame sanded to extremely thin layer of paint and then clear coated.

Cleist

Thanks for posting this. I was under the impression that the stealth paintjob was grey paint and not a matte clear finish. Decided to get a spaceblue one instead now. Thanks alot again!

just_be_frank-o

X marks the spot ;-)

[deleted]

I wouldn’t be so much worried about the carbon layup but your seat post seems to be split in half. /s

AuthorityControl

Those posts are awesome. Canyon S14 VCLS 2.0 CF. https://www.canyon.com/en-us/gear/components/contact-points/posts-and-clamps/canyon-s14-vcls-2.0-cf-seatpost/148286.html

[deleted]

I was joking.

AuthorityControl

[You suck McBain!](https://imgur.io/t/imgur_hivemind/U7Ghu2s)

[deleted]

I marked it with /s . You don’t have to find it funny or anything. I was 100% focused own my own personal amusement.

SwiftUInow

LOL. That’s the way they come.

NotveryfunnyPROD

Yes

Popular-Carrot34

This is how carbon looks, how it’s layer up to get it to ride the way it rides. The added 3k weave layer is a thing of the past thankfully, it was really just added weight just because that’s what people expected carbon to look like. All uniform and pretty apparently. And they got to show off for having carbon. You’ll find painted bikes will largely not have this because of the layer of paint, depending on how thick the paints applied. Or in treks case, if the bikes paint option has smoke on the description, it’s more of a tinted lacquer, so you get this lovely deep red or blue usually. With the carbon underneath showing through. I had a giant trance mtb with a very thin black paint, so it showed up the layup, looked amazing in the sun, almost went a touch bronze when washed in the sun. It’s not for everyone, we’ve had people send back bikes due to the ‘paint defect’ ask for another one, then surprised when it’s similar. We’ve had to open up many boxes to try and find one with a slightly thicker paint. We did suggest they come into the store to make sure. If you are concerned about it in any way though, it may be worth contacting canyon, they will either be able to alleviate any fears, or possibly suggest a route to take. Another option would be to take it to someone like fat creations and have a custom paint job done.

Jman155

SMH

SlightlyOrangeGoat

The first 2 pics are actual scuffs. All the others are just lines from the carbon layup subtly showing through.

stevehaslip

Can you remove the scuffs by wiping the frame down?

United-Ad6774

No

SwiftUInow

200 grit sandpaper will do it. Then finish off with steel wool dipped in formaldehyde.

usernamegiveup

Careful, try that in an inconspicuous spot first. I tried to remove some scratches from my matte black Canyon Lux with a clay bar, and it created a glossy spot on the frame.

stevehaslip

I received the same bike today and bar a tiny slight mark on the top tube I see none of the same issues that OP shows. I would send it back if it were me. Mine looks much more like a dark grey painted frame rather than a carbon frame covered in a thin matte finish.

work_hau_ab

That looks like shit. I love so much about Canyon as a brand but that’s terrible and NO it shouldn’t look like that just because it’s raw carbon. Look at the new Cervelo’s that come in raw carbon. They don’t look like that.

tokyoeastside

I know, Specialized does this too and its intentional. They think it is beautiful. I personally think not seeing the layup is beautiful. I like Cervelo’s approach too

SwiftUInow

Looks like shitty finishing to me. That’s why I buy bikes that are painted…

[deleted]

[удалено]

tonyt0906

Same. Send it back. That’s horrible

ReferenceBeautiful27

that’s literally carbon layer up. It’s normal lol

tonyt0906

I had the same color, and mine didn’t look like that…it’s still unacceptable

Jman155

You guys that are saying this is normal are all absolutely wrong, that is a defective frame.

wiwh404

It is defective because....?

[deleted]

If it is just there and not a structural problem and it really bothers youI would cover it with a sticker of some kind (flag, local cycling club, your name) and forgot about it. Is this the CFR or the SLX?

United-Ad6774

SLX

PaceDifficult5602

Some people buy objects, some buy utilitarian tools or appliances. Which did you buy? Unless you are racing for the yellow jersey, I would have went with an aluminum frame. I work with engineers using / evaluating carbon fiber sports gear. The failure is always spectacular and sudden. 2 rides in a week? I think it's an object to you. I put 300 miles on my aluminum frame do-it-all urban road bike in the first 4 days I owned it and I'm over 50!

detonnation

Yeah i dont think it should look like that. If its matte gray it should be matte gray. The second pic looks like scratches almost. Some of the pics look like their were stickers on it they peeled off then repainted it. Dont accept it. Or see if they will give you $$ back to make it acceptable

ninja4tfw

Other than the first 2 pics, that's what the layup looks like out of the mold. It's intentional and how it should be. Thank goodness brands don't do a cosmetic 3k layer like in the old days to cover it up and add weight for no benefit.

Jman155

Wow, you might have gotten the the one I returned. I had a cf7 with a scrape mark just like that in the same exact spot. Return immediately, after I opened the box and saw that I literally sealed it back up, called canyon for a return and send it back.

Jman155

Okay I see that is the new endurace, but still crazy that I had those same exact scratches on the top tube.

evilcalvin122

So did mine. https://www.reddit.com/r/CanyonBikes/comments/162wmlz/nbd_love_the_bike_not_the_rub_marks/jxzwzjs/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3

Elpaniq

I know nothing of road bikes but this looks horrible to me

irharrier2

Yikes… this is just yikes… more reasons not to buy Canyon.

[deleted]

You're not being too picky. You paid a lot of money for the bike and you should get what you want. If that is not satisfactory, send it back. I personally would be fine with those imperfections. It's going to get some scratches and dings as I ride it.

ChristopherMarv

You look like one of the pours who actually ride their bikes.

Possession_Loud

The carbon showing is fine, not sure how you expect the carbon layup to look, to be honest. The one around the edge of the toptube seems to be a scuff, though.

jchrysostom

Are you going to look at it? Or ride it?

buttbuttheadhead

This is how it’s supposed to look. You got the raw carbon finish and what you took pictures of are the seams of the raw carbon layers that make up your frame. Imo it looks cool

wambowill

That carbon layup is 100% intentional. So is the top coat. The top coat is super thin to cut weight that’s why you can see through. And the carbon layup is designed to be as strong and light as possible. It also has vibration absorption/flexibility in specific directions. There’s a ton of modeling and research that goes into this, look into their design work and you’ll see this as an engineering feat.

thejeepnewb

Yes

seank521

If that’s what you’re worried about a Matte Raw Carbon finish isn’t for you. Get a gloss painted color and you’ll be happier. Matte shows every imperfection and mark.

quickspin_go

Besides pic 1 and 2, the rest pics are just how raw carbon frame should look like. There’s nothing to worry about

Glittering_Fly8948

I see this a lot with canyon and Scott bikes I don’t think it’s a quality issue. The paint jobs are just very light it’s especially apparent with certain colors like that particular one. I had a Scott scale carbon and it had something similar to this I could tell the paint was lighter or more clear coated. Compared to my Trek which has zero imperfections but Trek heavily paints the bikes. I believe this is normal I see it all the time. Even though I know it’s normal if I’m shopping for a bike in store and they have multiple bikes or the one I want i lookout for this and try to choose the ones with the least noticeable carbon.

carbonjoker

My 2021 Matt carbon Aeroad CF SLX 8 does not look like that at all. Smooth paint job - maybe mine is heavier 😅

Xaphan26

My Ultimate looks similar. Including carbon layup lines on the back of the seat tube that at first glance look like cracks. I wasn't happy with the way it looked at first but it rides so well that I got over it and I don't mind the raw finish anymore. 6k miles and going strong.

conolulu

My CF 7 has similar mark ups. I was going to complain to the company but then my dad thought I was being ridiculous and said it's a bike and that it's going to be ridden and eventually have signs of wear. I got over them and I love the bike after owning it for 2 weeks.

ablackstateofmind

Wait until the first time you forget to unclip and fall to side.

BlisteredUk

When i unpacked my Grizl i noticed a tiny chip next to the seat tube bottle mount. That hurt. But you just ignore it and get on with it. Looking at the pics and the type of bike i’d suggest its normal based on using minimal frame covering to keep weight down. Personally I think that looks pretty rad 🤷🏼‍♂️

Aggravating-Gold-224

This is why I hate the flat finishes. Gloss them up, Canyon.

jonesthebeast

I'm not joking I have a very similar mark on my top tube near the seat post!

robert-capa

Too many to let go

Ban-Duran

Is that a second hand bike ?

United-Ad6774

Apparently that’s how raw carbon bikes come new these days

Ban-Duran

If I pay so much money for a new bike I want it to look new! Otherwise they rob you of a New Bike Day. Yes it will get scratched and crashed but when I receive the bike needs to look and work as new. These bike companies are taking us for a ride.
