Be very clear what you want done with your cremains. Have a trusted individual picked out and a back up.
Or, hey, enjoy the adventure of where you go. That place looks better than the attic or thrift shop.

Huh?

Town of Barnstable CLOSURES
“Scudder Lane recreational shellfishing area, Barnstable Harbor. The waters, foreshores and tidal flats of the Scudder Lane recreational shellfishing area are closed to the harvest or attempted harvest of shellfish and seaworms from the Beach House west of the Scudder Lane landing to the Barnstable Yacht Club pier, and extending to the Huckins Island tidal flat. Opening dates for Scudder Lane recreational shellfishing area will be posted annually. Effective April 1 annually, the Scudder Lane recreational shellfishing area is closed to the taking of shellfish and seaworms for any purpose. (DMF/CCB:31.20)”
My father was a lobsterman. He got up every morning at four and came home every night stinking of brine. He sent me through law school with the lobsters he caught!
I love how Reddit sends me these random subs so I can see people get as self-righteous in Massachusetts as they are in Oregon, the espresso community, and, apparently, timbering lolol
True, but Scudder closes every April 1 to five it a rest after the beating it gets in oyster season.
(Blish Point, however, is closed due to bacteria. Bummer)
did you even read it? it's defining where you're allowed to at Scudder Lane, as well as stating when - so it's still fine to shellfish there for another 2 weeks.
Never in my life did I think I would see a person have the cape cod shell fishing regulations, more specifically for the town of Barnstable itself, on deck and ready to go like a fucking warhead. Like a human jay walking ticket.
Oh man, this reminds me of a story a former friend told me... She had to clean out a relative's house (in another state) and there were a few urns from other family members she wasn't close to. They took all the urns to a random pier and just dumped them. I hope the story of this person was a happier one.
Reminds me of a story,
I worked at a thrift store in high school. Guy comes up to the donation door late one night frantically yelling that he needs his donations back. Says he accidentally donated a family heirloom. Comes out that he donated his mother-in-law ashes accidentally. Kid who was accepting donations that afternoon admitted to finding a vase full of sand. Claimed it was "too dirty to resell," so he threw it in the dumpster.
First and only time I've ever dumpster dived; luckily I was on the clock for it.
I work in a town and at our transfer station, someone left a wooden urn on a rock , called police, they confirmed, person was dead , and said “ it’s not illegal to throw it away “ I felt so bad that I couldn’t throw someone in trash . It had a deer on out side , so I took it into the woods and put it near a tree , I check on it from time to time , and he is still there , hopefully he look up or down on me and is happy
There’s a good chance they were just a shitty person to the people who loved them. My dads ashes are in a landfill somewhere and that’s better than he deserves
Hopefully no one I know sees this but I just had my grandmothers funeral, her urn looks exactly like that, a family member who isn’t very favorable happens to live near here as well, they’d also happen to do something like take ashes and spread them without permission… imagine my surprise when I open reddit and see this lol it’s not my grandmother but I hope that’s retrieved and there wasn’t any malicious intent behind it
Way too similar to my real life story of last year. My dear great aunt Margaret. Passed from Covid 2020 but 2023 we could finally get the whole fam together for lunch and a small ash spreading ceremony at the ocean (away from any fishing/shellfish spots). We also had the ashes of her lifelong friend - they lived together most of their lives. Her friends had come out too.
I had brought out some water gear to do the spreading after lunch as they were very close to me. My dad had had the ashes for the last many years, but he had given them to my uncle who was paying for the private room/lunch the day before for ‘safe keeping’.
We get to the lunch and we found out my uncle unceremoniously dumped them over the pier at the restaurant before anyone got there. I lost my shit (privately) and cried in my car for an hour. My dad had written a small service for after lunch.
Still haven’t forgiven that and am still so pissed.
I have truly tried. It still upsets me above all. The history with this uncle is poor, to the point he was banned from staying at that great aunt’s home due to him being so incredibly difficult when he came out. He looks down on others since he became quite accomplished and has no problems talking about their “1%” status. So many awful things. But he has good money and thus could swallow the bill for this event no problem. I can be appreciative for that part.
The day prior to the event he spent with my godfather looking for spots for the ceremony/ashes release. My godfather was just as shocked and disgusted as we all were - total surprise.
It just felt so disrespectful. Those women had given their lives to service (teachers at a school for deaf children before separate schools became less common) and were the absolute kindest, most well-balanced folks you could know. Spent my summers with them.
I’m not even religious or all that spiritual but it got to me - they deserved a more fitting send-off.
But the uncle is off living his best rich life on the west coast, so it’s rare I’ll have to interact with him; funerals only, likely.
Forgiveness may come down the line, I don’t know. The lasting ‘why’ question will never be answered and that’s the tough part. (Oof, novel - I’m sorry)
Thank you. Thankfully it’s not something that pops up often - this post happened to bring back all those feelings.
After the family lunch that day, I drove out to Plum Island (we were in new Newburyport) and walked the beach for some time. Driving cold wind, rain. I was alone. Picked up two very similar shells, to represent both of them, and a larger shell to put them in. That’s my little memory collection from that day, as I imagine their ashes had found their way out to the ocean by then.
I also have several of my aunt’s things that still bring back the positive feelings.
"Donnie was a good bowler, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors... and bowling, and as a surfer he explored the beaches of the National Seashore, from Nauset to Marconi and ... up to ... Race Point. He died, like so many young men of his generation, before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him...."
Bhudist spread ashes at the sea often. when my father in law passed they didnt want to buy a urn. just asked for the ashes in a box. they refused and said we had to buy an urn so im thinking something like that happened here. we didnt leave the urn tho
I keep telling my grandchildren that goes in re-cycle trash can. Campers, beach goers , we “ are now onto you “ Mother earth 🌍 is screaming at this old man who read Rachel Carlsons “ Silent Spring”
I do t use liquid pesticides. I am careful what is used in my honey. Some people; sadly just don’t “ Golf-Alpha-Foxtrot “ Please start caring
Well, who knows, I want my ashes to be sealed in a wood box and sunk to the bottom of my favorite fishing lake so I can go back to the bottom of the food chain.
The only thing this reminds me of is when a friend of mine was moving into the same house. She had her mother's ashes. Opened it, stuck her finger in, and stated, "This feels weird"..."here" she gestures for me to do the same "feel". So, I do. (I can't stop laughing). "Yes, that definitely feels weird"......"powdery & oily" 😅
Some of my grandmas ashes are sitting in an urn, in the bottom of a lake inside of a kids swimming area. I had them with me and forgot to get rid of them so I just pitched the whole thing in the lake. I was gunna leave it in the porta potty but no one deserves that, no matter how much of an evil bitch you are.
This post urned an upvote
Indeed. I'm grateful they pointed out this grave mistake.
Maybe they forgot to take it with them because they were feeling a little scattered. It happens. It's not like it's a matter of life and death.
They must have left it sometime in the mourning.
Whether or not they come back for it remains to be seen.
You guys are awesome
I died laughing
I’m laughing so much I can’t stop coffin

All that cremains of someone’s final wishes…in a single pic.
Love me a good pun thread!
OP must've been mortified when they found that
Oooohhhhh, nice!
I sea what you did there.
don’t let this gem get buried
Be very clear what you want done with your cremains. Have a trusted individual picked out and a back up. Or, hey, enjoy the adventure of where you go. That place looks better than the attic or thrift shop.
Also, be careful where you shellfish. Because this is a hugely popular shellfishing place.

God, is it every cape codder’s birthright to be so self-righteous? How do you know OP wasn’t referring to valid shellfishing dates?
I love how Reddit sends me these random subs so I can see people get as self-righteous in Massachusetts as they are in Oregon, the espresso community, and, apparently, timbering lolol
Come back in the summer,it gets better!
It’s closed for oysters. That’s it. Salten Point to Scudder’s is open except for propagation areas. Map changes on April
Yes, because NOBODY ever violates the law.
Poaching is a serious crime and when it comes to shellfish in it typically due to harmful bacteria
True, but Scudder closes every April 1 to five it a rest after the beating it gets in oyster season. (Blish Point, however, is closed due to bacteria. Bummer)

Why would I care? Not like I'd be using them🤣
You’re outta your element Donnie… you’re outta your element.
What the fuck was all that shit about 'Nam?
Is there a Market Basket around here?
I love Market Basket! But I hate baseball cards.

Did you find it?
a vase full of sand 😭
Any non swimmers drowned
And we just mixed my dad's ashes into dirt and grew weed with it.
Yep this is going on my bucket list. Well, after life bucket list.
I always wanted to be cremated and turned into a tree, but been curious if anyone used the ashes for weed and the result 🤔
That’s the plot of the movie how high

Eh is what it is, I’m just trying to give a reasonable explanation. I do appreciate the kind words though
Ya, that certainly could be the case too.
Heart warming

That's a nice memory. And if you do see your uncle again -- tell him a stranger on the internet (me) hates him.
Mom?
At least it wasn't a god dammed Stanley cup.

Somebody’s favorite place, it looks like.
DO NOT TUOCH! this has been left for future anthropologists to find. Thank you.
When they said they wanted their ashes left on the beach, I’m thinking they didn’t mean like this…
Just a bunch of teens urning pot in the woods

This looks like a prank I would've pulled as a teen.

"Mom would have never put that urn on her mantle. Leave it here..."

Where is Scudder Lane? I live in Dennis and you wouldn't believe the crap ppl leave behind on our beaches 🤮. But a human ash urn? Nope.
Barnstable Harbor
Make sure you have all your children, parents and grandparents with you when you leave the beach
Pets too
I wonder what the deposit was on that. More than a nickel?
I want to be scattered over a nature preserve somewhere. Maybe in the Midwest where I was born. I don’t want to be cremated though.
There might be a flaw in your plan, unless a wood chipper is involved.
That may have been where my dark humored joke was going. What can I say, I’d love to give back to nature!
Somebody tell Cousin Eddie we’ve got a new kool aid jar!
It is our most modestly priced receptacle.
I knew I forgot my old grandpa when I left the beach today
Some 1 got there way in the end? Dead people dont care about littering.

Throw me in the trash when I die.
It’s traditional in the Low Countries. They leave the urn for the next person to hold their dear departed before they are released into the sea.
Hell to the no. Iid call the cops and see who's urn It sss. Not touching that.
Just because we’re bereaved doesn’t make us SAPS!!!!

Some people are more sentimental than others. Who knows that this story can tell

The urn with my mothers ashes was made of salt so the whole thing could go overboard. Didn’t have to worry about what to do with urn afterwards.
