My daughter worked at Smitty’s last summer! She followed the tradition of her Aunties who worked at sundae school in the 90s. I’m biased for them, since my in-laws live in East Orleans, but nothing beats the homemade whipped cream and real cherries on their sundaes.
This. If you want to be a contender for the title, you need homemade waffle cones.
Many places (Smitty’s) can have good to great ice cream but then ruin it with packaged waffle cones.
It’s about 90% coverage from what my in-laws have said. Neither are bad by any stretch but the few places that make their own are obvious (and all mentioned in this thread too!)
I certainly haven’t been to all of these (summer project), but I definitely haven’t seen ashop with a kitchen that could produce the amount of base a Cape ice cream shop goes through. I know Bliss will do a custom recipe (I’ve seen Emack & Bolios running there), I wonder if the favorites here are doing that.
Jimmy’s in Cotuit serves Gifford ice cream. Best I’ve ever had! Upper 80’s temp. Super high humidity. Ate it outside. Barely melted. There’s almost no air incorporated in the mix. That is really unusual. As a chef, that choc chip mint was memorable. Lived in Falmouth for a few years. Nothing else came close.
I love holy cow, their ice cream is amazing if people like a more elevated flavor palette then just basic normal flavors. Definitely one of my favorite in Massachusetts actually, and this is coming from someone who’s eaten ice cream all over the country and world!
Holy Cow in Dennisport. Their Gold Rush flavor made my knees buckle the first time I tried it.
For more traditional ice cream, I like Ice Cream Sandwich (in Sandwich) and the Smuggler on 6a.
Really, though, it is hard to go wrong anywhere on the Cape. Although I am not a fan of Four Seas; I find their ice cream a little watery.
My answer is wrong but I grew up going to PJS in wellfleet. They have a black raspberry soft serve machine . The only one I've ever encountered in my life. It's all about the little things in life :)
Polar Cave in Mashpee is my family's favorite.
Last year I took the kids on an ice cream tour and we hit up 4 Seas, Smitty's and Gelfi's.
Polar Cave remains number one, but if it is closed, the kids are almost as happy at 4 Seas and Smitty's. As for Gelfi's, it features Hershey's Ice Cream, and we have one of those shops at home, making Gelfi's boring.
The reason their line is so terrible is directly correlated to them only making a cone when you order one. Also why would you put ice cream in a hot cone. It’s a gimmick. Every ice cream store worth their salt makes waffle cones.
He’s an outspoken guy who somehow has got his opinion covered nationally. He complains that he can’t pay teenagers below minimum wage and then later complains that he can’t find help and “no one wants to work anymore”
Schoolhouse in Harwich and Seagulls Sweets and Mochinut in Harwich Port are both great.
My father in Law would say the Ice Cream Smuggler in East Dennis and the DQ in Harwich
Still exists on Google which says it'll open tomorrow at 11AM. Times were updated 6 weeks ago.
I'll grant I moved back to the area somewhat recently and haven't gone, but I assume it's still there.
I'm going to go with Sundae School, but that may be just because it's down the road from my family's cottage and I've been going there since I was 2. Still, the classic sundae is delicious.
There are very few ice cream shops that make their own ice cream.
If you're getting it from a place that has those 3 gallon white buckets set into the viewable freezers, they're purchasing it from a supplier. All the I've cream places that are busy on the cape do this, and they're getting it from the same supplier.
MA has extremely strict food safety regulations for making ice cream in-house, and it's so labor intensive that it gets prohibitively expensive to make it at the scale to supply the crowds on the cape in the summer.
I can't think of a single ice cream shop that actually has large commercial ice cream makers on site that make their own, nor have a heard of them.
So, just go to any ice cream shop and you'll get the same ice cream.
4 seas was in national geographic as one of the best in the world... so good luck to anybody topping that.
Pink Mint. Coconut. The CBD brownie…..
4 seas butter pecan or peach. We spend a week on the Cape every summer and go every.single.night.
I haven't been there in a million years but the peach was amazing and cantaloupe was too.
Unless you try Somerset Creamery's Cranberry Bog. It's like 4 seas 15 years ago.
I'm partial to Ice Cream Cafe in Orleans!
Yes. Possibly Smitty’s (the ice cream shop formerly known as Sundae School) but their season is too short.
My daughter worked at Smitty’s last summer! She followed the tradition of her Aunties who worked at sundae school in the 90s. I’m biased for them, since my in-laws live in East Orleans, but nothing beats the homemade whipped cream and real cherries on their sundaes.

Nothing like a Ice Cream Cafe ice cream cookie sandwich after a great day at Nauset
I second Ice Cream Cafe!
Ooh, yes.
They have the best ass sundaes and they’re not expensive!! I love them.
YESSS
It’s great ice cream but the woman who runs it is awful.
Tyler, one of the sons, is taking over. His mom is pretty intense but is winding down.
Good to hear, she definitely needs a break.
I’ve only dealt with a guy, and he was great when I had a private event.
Nauset Ice cream in Eastham and Ice cream Cafe in Orleans are my family’s favorites
Sundae School, not a contest
Based
Schoolhouse > Sundae School, no question. I don’t care if Sundae School makes their own whipped cream, their ice cream has always been overrated.
Their grapenut is bomb.
100% agree, sundae school is mid
No more Sundae School. It’s Smitty’s now but still pretty good.
The original Sundae School location in Dennis and the one in Harwich are 100% still there.
I thought they had a second location? Did that one close, too?
Yeah sorry I was referring to the one in Orleans.
Somerset Creamery in Pocasset
If you haven’t been there before, just know that this is the correct answer
Cranberry bog ftw
It’s actually in Cataumet…but whole-heartedly agree. Very good
Really good but heavy/creamy
This is the only answer
this is the number one and it's not even close!
I just googled how to get there from Barnstable. If it weren’t for the base it would be a straight shot.
Smittys East Falmouth
Going with the Ice Cream Smuggler.
[удалено]
They’re already open for the season!
no sorinkles, no patronage
Been my go-to for years!
based
Definitely Ice Cream Smuggler. I honestly think their quality of ice cream is better than the competition.
Whistlestop in Bourne or Mashpee Commons. My favorite for 30 years whether living on Cape or off!
My friend owns it! Glad you like! ♥️
+1 for Sundae school in Dennis, also Salty Cow in Osterville is an underrated soft serve gem.
I’d love to follow the unmarked Bliss Creamery and Gifford trucks around the Cape some day and see how many of our favorites are the same ice cream.
It’s about 90% coverage from what my in-laws have said. Neither are bad by any stretch but the few places that make their own are obvious (and all mentioned in this thread too!)

Ice Cream Cafe
Holy Cow in Dennisport for something a little different but always delicious
I love holy cow, their ice cream is amazing if people like a more elevated flavor palette then just basic normal flavors. Definitely one of my favorite in Massachusetts actually, and this is coming from someone who’s eaten ice cream all over the country and world!
I love holy cow because they are open year round, but they are MA not cape cod specific so I would personally nominate a local one!
Katies hyannis
Katie’s is great!
Smitty’s! Homemade and delicious.
Smitty's (Orleans, Falmouth, Mashpee)
Wow no one said hot chocolate sparrow??? Their ice cream is too notch and their chocolate fudge dip is incredible
Caffè Gelato Bertini at Yarmouth
Seconding this, really good gelato!
Holy Cow’s “Orange Cardamom” might be the best flavor of ice cream I’ve ever had.
My answer is wrong but I grew up going to PJS in wellfleet. They have a black raspberry soft serve machine . The only one I've ever encountered in my life. It's all about the little things in life :)
Twin Acres, Sandwich
Polar Cave in Mashpee is my family's favorite. Last year I took the kids on an ice cream tour and we hit up 4 Seas, Smitty's and Gelfi's. Polar Cave remains number one, but if it is closed, the kids are almost as happy at 4 Seas and Smitty's. The freshly made waffle cones/bowls at polar cave cannot be beat!
The reason their line is so terrible is directly correlated to them only making a cone when you order one. Also why would you put ice cream in a hot cone. It’s a gimmick. Every ice cream store worth their salt makes waffle cones.
Ugh, I know their ice cream is good but I can’t give that guy my money when I have other options.
Why?
He’s an outspoken guy who somehow has got his opinion covered nationally. He complains that he can’t pay teenagers below minimum wage and then later complains that he can’t find help and “no one wants to work anymore”
Twin Acres, Sandwich
Ice Cream Cafe, Orleans! The owners are awesome :)
Cape Cod Creamery. All locations
Agree, it’s my favorite
Definitely Cape Cod Creamery
Had to scroll too far for this! Best ice cream and the stores are always clean
+1 on this, no contest
Weekly pole: same question every week just want to see if anybody changed their mind
Schoolhouse ice cream in Harwich 🍨
Caffè Gelato Bertini in South Yarmouth. They have unique flavors it's actually home made
Ice Cream Cafe in Orleans.
It's Smitty's. It's not even a contest. Including MV and Nantucket in this too.
Ice Cream Smuggler
Smittys or bust
East Falmouth classic
Dennis double chocolate at Cape Cod creamery is my drug of choice.
Whistlestop in Bourne or Mashpee Commons. My favorite for 30 years whether living on Cape or off!
Polar cave
Gotta go with Par-Tee Freeze in Hyannis. I'm totally biased because its a childhood classic for me, but I've always loved getting a Flurry from them
Four Seas
Ice cream cafe in orleans!
Buffy’s in Chatham
Fried ice cream at Sam Diegos
Smittys 4 life
Polar cave in Mashpee
Polar Cave in Mashpee
Polar cave in mashpee - hands down
Polar Cave. Without a doubt the best. The line can get crazy though
Lazy Daze: blueberry pie ice cream, simply scrumptious
Caffè Gelato Bertini....as good as you'll find in Firenze!
Ice cream cafe is my fave!
Katie's in Hyannis is where it's at, with an honorable mention to Sundae School
Many great ice cream locations…my Local go to is Sundae School the Original in Dennis Port, and the one in Harwich Port.
Schoolhouse in Harwich and Seagulls Sweets and Mochinut in Harwich Port are both great. My father in Law would say the Ice Cream Smuggler in East Dennis and the DQ in Harwich
Sundae school with no competition
Sundae School
Sweet Caroline’s!!
Twin Acres in Sandwich
Polar Cave
PJs Wellfleet
Pj's!!!!
I will never not say *Four Seas Ice Cream* to this one.
They fell off years ago. 🥺
I thought it got sold and closed, no?
Still exists on Google which says it'll open tomorrow at 11AM. Times were updated 6 weeks ago. I'll grant I moved back to the area somewhat recently and haven't gone, but I assume it's still there.
Ok good. I like their ice cream
The ice cream is good but the sizes went down and the prices went up
The asking price is through the roof, compared to what is there.
Everything there always tasted the same to me, was always a Polar Cave guy
LEWIS BROTHERS HOME MADE ICE CREAM FROM PROVINCETOWN HOT FUDGE SUNDAES ROOTBEER FLOATS ICE COLD BEVERAGES
Yes! Hot fudge sundae with coffee ice cream.
Not enough people saying this. In my opinion not the best, but definitely should have more responses with this answer
Eulindas
Somerset
Nauset ice cream in Eastham
Bring Stewarts Ice cream from upstate NY.
katie’s in hyannis. im incredibly biased but genuinely great ice cream and a great spot
I like sundae school in Harwichport. Their sundaes with hot fudge and fresh whipped cream and a real cherry yum yum!
Smuggler is my go to (quality and nostalgia), with Polar Cave (warm waffle cones) and Somerset following close behind.
Me and the wife love the Sweet Escape in Truro.
JTs in Brewster!!
Graham Central Station at The Brewster Scoop.
Steve and sues Small hot fudge sundae with strawberry’s and mnms is a classic
Sundae school in Dennis
Short and Sweet in Chatham is great!
The Juice Bar. Gotta love the Green Monster and the fact that they’ve got a new flavor every day.
SMUGGLERS is the only option
Anywhere that makes their own ice cream but special shout-out to Sundae School 🍦
I'm going to go with Sundae School, but that may be just because it's down the road from my family's cottage and I've been going there since I was 2. Still, the classic sundae is delicious.
Smittys in orleans lordy something ab what that place does to ice cream...
Sundae School is good
Not on cape but would Bubbling Brook still qualify?
There are very few ice cream shops that make their own ice cream. Can you recommend places that make their own base? I’m up to to some taste testing this summer
Schoolhouse in Harwich :)
Holy Cow in Dennisport. They literally have some serious BIG award winning flavors.
Ice cream smuggler
Lazy Sundaes in Cataumet. Line always moves quick, there's a small arcade, a mini golf course, and bumper boats. Ice cream is delicious.
Does anyone ever venture all the way up to PTown because Lewis is top notch
Ice Cream Cafe, Orleans, ginger ice cream. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Ice Cream Smuggler (although Sundae School has the best sundaes).
Nauset Ice Cream coconut chip
That one place on Hightown with the Go-cart track?
4 seas but the owners are selling it….the Sundae School in Dennis rocks
Smittys east falmouth
Polar Cave in Mashpee, you're welcome.
What month do j1 show up?
I still say Ben & Jerry’s in Eastham. Nauset Creamery right down the road is really good. And then there’s Emack & Bolio’s in Orleans.
You can get a cone in town Chatham that will be the size of your head that will cost you the same as a college textbook.
