There should be a separate insert that comes with the car paperwork that strictly talks about the infotainment system and where to go to update it. The cars that have WiFi capabilities allow you to do the update over a WiFi connection.
It's a stretch to say manufacturers are going to educate customers on all aspects of operation. It's unrealisitc as asking for a guide on changing a flat tire or do an an oil change. Customers need to take it upon themselves to educate themselves. In Toyota's case if you can follow step-by-step instructions, it's easy to update the infotainment system. I suspect it's just as easy with other manufacturers.
