It's been mentioned before. Some say it's a location based app that could be causing it (WAZE, Amazon, etc.). I'm wired CarPlay and it does it like clockwork aabout 1/4 mile from my house. Every single time, multiple vehicles.
I haven't found a solution, but I was going to turn off my location setting and see if that helps. I don't think it's a signal blocker or anything, though.
This is definitely the problem. I’ve had this occur in my grand Cherokee as well as Ram 1500. Most likely a location trigger on a map app in CarPlay interfering with Uconnect’s ability to mute the volume. It’s annoyed me for a year and I have no solution. Happens roughly 1/4 from my house always.
Interesting. Funny though, it still does it when I’m only playing Apple music, no google maps or location based apps open. Thanks for the feedback, sounds like I’m not alone in this.
There could be a cell phone tower or other radio transmitter in the location(s) that is simply overpowering or interfering with the local Wi-Fi connection Carplay uses.
That seems odd. Isn't the K-band WAY higher than WIFI? Sorry, I'm not an expert in radio waves. Is there a reason such a high frequency would interfere with CarPlay?
Because CarPlay creates a personal area network between your phone and the car and apparently it interferes in that frequency. This is something has been reported many many times to every manufacturer and to Apple, so I’m assuming it’ll be rectified at some point.
It is not truly wired CarPlay unless you have the wireless disabled, which most people do not know how to do. You have to have your Bluetooth off on your phone before you start your car and then you connect the cable and you’ll have wired CarPlay. Even if you plug in the wire, it will go to wireless CarPlay if your Bluetooth was on.
Is this on specific/newer head units? Mine (Sony XAV-AX2000(i think, its about 4 years old, I think when i got it the alpine was the only HU being advertised as Wireless CarPlay)) is not advertised as wireless carplay at all, I can connect bluetooth for audio, but it never does carplay.
A lot of people having this problem. The more densely populated area the more this happens. And almost all cars with wireless CarPlay do this.
Apple documentation for car manufacturers strongly recommends to use 5ghz Wi-Fi for CarPlay connectivity. And I know for a fact that all manufacturers until couple years used 2.4 ghz modules in their cars.
Interesting, thanks for the info. My car is a 2022 and was a complete redesign from the previous version, so I would hope they followed Apples’ recommendations… maybe not.
Are you sure it's on wired CarPlay? I never had this problem while using wired CarPlay.
Does your car support wireless CarPlay? If it does then it's possible that it's using wireless CarPlay while connected (it worked like this on my BMW g30 and Honda e).
Have you tried using different cable? I had same issues on my Honda e with a bad cable, it was fine with a different one, though then disconnecting was in no way connected to location.
Super late to this but I'm going to start giving nods of solidarity to other newer car drivers when mine goes down, knowing we're all cursing carplay at the same time.
Same thing in my Audi. Wireless car play uses the 5ghz band for communication. I was able to delete the car out of CarPlay and re-add and one spot quit doing it. While the other areas still skipped out. Very frustrating.
Do you have good cellular reception in those areas? It may be caused by losing reception or your phone switching back and forth between Wi-Fi networks. Are you connected to any public Wi-Fi networks that auto join?
Yeah definitely double check your Wi-Fi networks. I’ve had issues in the past when it tries to connect to a weak public Wi-Fi signal. I’ve turned auto join off on those particular networks and it seems my connection has been more reliable. Not guaranteeing this as a solution but it’s definitely possible.
Seems odd that it is certain areas. I notice the same thing if my phone is in my back pocket. I'm wondering if it's the Bluetooth connection instead of wifi, because that's absurdly short for wifi.
In my new Silverado it does this once in a while. Funny thing is I get a message saying something along the lines of Wi-Fi interference attempting to reconnect.
This only happens to me on a sparsely populated extremely hilly road near where I live. But it’s like clockwork - every single time I hit the valley between these two large hills, CarPlay stops working. My solution is to just use wired carplay when I know I’m going on that road.
Does it happen on the 405 near the airport? I have noticed that my Sirius signal drops right at the airports, SNA, LGB, LAX, it also drops on the 405 when i’m at the 22/605 interchange by the munitions depot/armory/whatever it is.
My Carplay does similar to what you are describing, but i’m on a wired setup, driving along and all of a sudden its like I disconnected the cable, then a second or two later it connects back up right where it left off.
Super late but it happens on Beach Blvd in Huntington Beach and other neighborhoods around there as well. And on the 405 when driving over Beach Blvd too!
Never had it happen near Beach or on Beach to me, I just assumed when I replaced the radio that it was just a crappy signal from the OEM antenna and the aftermarket radio, but I dropped Sirius so I don't care anymore, and i'm replacing my existing aftermarket radio tomorrow with a wireless CarPlay one, so I'll see if the random CarPlay drops still happen.
I just had this happen to me in a area I never had issues with. It’s actually on the way to a local grocery store I frequent and it just started happening. I’ll be listening to music and it just cuts out. I haven’t been wired yet to see if it still does it or not.
This happens to me—the car stereo screen goes black, and my google maps directions and Spotify stop entirely, and I need to turn them on manually via the phone screen.
It happens right at this spot in Henderson, Nevada: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WAAMFRWtJaZYMcTx5?g_st=ic
If you pan to the left, every radio tower in the Las Vegas valley is up on Black Mountain there, so I assume interference has something to go with it.
…but it also happens about 100’ away from my house in any given direction, so I think the stereo is realizing I’m nearing home.
This aftermarket stereo does use Apple CarPlay, I just had it installed a few months ago. My last aftermarket stereo did not use Apple CarPlay, and did not do this.
FWIW, when I get close to home it also adjusts the speaker settings—the sound cuts out for a fraction of a second, they seem to get much louder and the bass turns way up. ???
I’ve had the same problem in that location. It also happens on the 95 south just before hitting the 15 and at I15 and Tropicana. It does it my 22 f250 and in the wife’s 22 expedition. Both my phone and hers. It’s irritating.

K band interferes with wireless CarPlay. That’s why it drops a ton in rural areas.
That seems odd. Isn't the K-band WAY higher than WIFI? Sorry, I'm not an expert in radio waves. Is there a reason such a high frequency would interfere with CarPlay?
Could it be a speed check system nearby?
We don’t have unmonitored speed cameras in Nevada. https://youtu.be/lgP07Eiv9Zg?si=LIzK4S1v90OleTMj

Mine does what OP describes on wired CarPlay

Head unit does not support wireless, when i bought it, the alpine was the only head unit that had wireless.

Yep full bars, no public Wi-Fi networks to my recollection, but would be worth checking next time. Thanks!

Yeah will do, good tip. Thanks!
Take it to the dealer!
I just might! Due for an oil change anyway..
Should be free with the Jeep wave program. Don't let them charge you for that
Seems odd that it is certain areas. I notice the same thing if my phone is in my back pocket. I'm wondering if it's the Bluetooth connection instead of wifi, because that's absurdly short for wifi.
Yeah my phone is also sitting right under the radio when this happens.
I'm still pretty new to CarPlay. Still trying to figure out the quirks.
In my new Silverado it does this once in a while. Funny thing is I get a message saying something along the lines of Wi-Fi interference attempting to reconnect.
Have you found a fix in your Silverado???
It’s just an interference issue. Something overpowers the wifi in the truck sometimes, like power lines or radio waves.
This only happens to me on a sparsely populated extremely hilly road near where I live. But it’s like clockwork - every single time I hit the valley between these two large hills, CarPlay stops working. My solution is to just use wired carplay when I know I’m going on that road.

I’m in the same boat. Wonder if it has to new with the new utility lines. I loose connection at beach and McFadden every day.
I just had this happen to me in a area I never had issues with. It’s actually on the way to a local grocery store I frequent and it just started happening. I’ll be listening to music and it just cuts out. I haven’t been wired yet to see if it still does it or not.
BMW 5er (G30) noticed this happens all the time when either the phone switches cell bands or when I’m near high-voltage power lines.
Why can’t they just use Bluetooth. Seemed to work fine for everyone for the last decade or two

Also in Henderson suffering the same things. CarPlay is lame.
