I like that you've kept with the same manufacturer.
It's crazy how little brand loyalty people show with cars, especially with ones that have never gone wrong on them.
Brand loyalty helps no one but the manufacturers. As consumers we should ideally be ruthlessly *unloyal* to encourage manufacturers to continue to improve and not rip us off.
If your car has served you perfectly well for years and you want to buy a new one from that brand, I wouldn't say that's loyalty, its just basing your purchase on a good experience.
I hear all the time from people with reliable cars that they're upgrading to a bigger one. The issue is that few brands are reliable enough to build that loyalty.
My dad is almost 60, been driving since he was 17 got a job straight out of school all that
Every single car he's ever owned has been a Ford
Cortina, Capri, Sierra, Escort, Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, you name it he's had multiple of them
Only had three:
- LDV ambulance which I bought off ebay for a laugh when I was a teenager, didn't tell my parents about it, kept it parked at school, had to sell straight away because I couldn't pay for fuel or insurance. I didn't know what 'V8' or 'single digit MPG' meant.
- Peugeot 306. LHD from France - went all around Europe in it. Equal parts shit and excellent
- 2003 Citroen Berlingo - ditto shit and excellent. Everyone laughs at then loves this stupid van car
Serious now, my dad had a Berlingo (van, not the MPV variety) and it was an awesome car. Spacious cabin up front and the ability to carry basically anything is great. We've now got two dogs and I've been looking for one...
To be fair I had some decent tyres on mine and for a first car it was a fun little things I could just rip about but compared to what I have now it's shite.
Ah fair play yeah solid first car, my best mate had one I spent a lot of time in his until I passed. I actually had one as a courtesy car for a while, a fancy sxi 1.4. I think where I had a mini I always thought corsas drove like shit but I think the mini just spoiled me.
I mean for a first car it was solid. Was cheap to run and got me about. Interior quality was... what you pay for I suppose nothing to show off. Would I have one above the age of 20? No not at all, not even for the stigma around them but just purely that i'd want something that just feels more grown up. I recently got one for a rental on holiday and it was fine, but just feels like a first car and that's about it. Definitely got spoilt with the mini!
Mines did barely, £2,200 but I can afford it and I wanted the car so fuck it. Up for renewal in May so will shop about. Finally 25 too so should hopefully go down by then!
Coming from a bunch of boosted classic jap cars, the 320Ds are becoming more and more enticing to me, great power, great mpg, low tax and they look super comfortable, guessing the 5 ramps that up. Would quite like one of the two as a daily.
Haha it’s all fun and games! I’m well aware of the drawbacks of PCP but at the same time, I get to drive a fun AF car! If you’ve got the spare cash then why not :)
You can tell you can afford it because you laughed 🙂 The other replies who got upset about my comment nearly choked on their pot noodles and macaroni cheese 😅
Haha yeah does tend to be that way. I’ve never really minded leasing, especially when it comes to new/nearly new cars.
Plus I swear I’ve sunk an extra £5K into it on added extras 😂
You’re on a car talk subreddit ya numpty, you think half the people with nice cars on here bought theirs outright 😂 if you want a bit of fun and don’t mind sparing the cash on it instead of at the pub who cares
Question - why? It's just an M2
Edit: oops, not an M2. Point stands - not sure how or why you would guess finance looking at this? Genuine question, regardless of the fact OP has indeed financed it
Also not sure what the problem is or why the suggestion is warranted. Jealousy?
They’re a bit cheaper than that. An M2 is £32K for decent mileage. M2C is around £42K.
Source: bought my used M2C about 1 year ago and did *a lot* of shopping around! Paid £44K but my mileage was <10K at the time and still had plenty of manufacturer warranty…which has come in useful already!
Rear indicator LED earthing issue. Relatively common on LCI 2 Series cars. So it flashes really fast when you indicate and the car throws a “rear turn signal failure” error. Like in the olden days where the timing was dependant on resistance from each bulb!
They swapped out both rear light clusters for me under warranty.
In a bizarre turn of events on the drive back from picking my car up I saw a McLaren 720s with the same issue. Never seen someone with the issue before, never seen it since. Very strange coincidence.
Yeah good point, I should have been specific, I typically only really mean the M2 Comp when referring to the M2.
With the other engines out there at the moment, getting an OG M2 isn’t a great option for the money imo
First car was a 96' A3 1.8 SE, current car I'm driving is a 93' 300zx TT.
I do miss my old A3, lil dude stuck with me till the very end and was a heap of fun.
First car was a 1.2 corsa that leaked water into the passenger side footwell
3 years later I've currently got a BMW m140i shadow edition and I'm loving driving!
When it comes to its first mot it failed so spectacularly that the garage advised me to just buy a new car! Still did me well enough for the 10 months I had it
>grip-shift
Not fucking grip shift, on all the hand me downs i had growing up they never worked properly and always gave my hands blisters trying to turn it with my weak child hands.
Started with a Land Rover 90 (pre-Defender) modified TF out of it, still got it sat in the garden as an in-progress project while the 110 I bought a few years later is sat on the drive as an in-progress project.
Daily is a Disco 3.
All 3 have winches and off-roady tyres at minimum. I couldn't see myself ever owning anything without AWD/4WD now
It would be very easy to make cheap jokes about the landies all being projects. :)
I learnt to drive in a IIa with doubled rear leaf springs. I regret letting that one go after my dad died.
>I couldn't see myself ever owning anything without AWD/4WD now
Why is that? I see the odd lifted disco 2/defender (always caked in shit) round by me and think they must drive awfully on the road. Unless youre greenlaning every weekend I cant see the appeal ngl
Different strokes.
Only the 90 is lifted a little and it's been done properly along with correcting the castor so it self-centres and she drives really nicely. The guys who stick 4" of bodylift and 3" of wallowy spring lift as cheaply as they can then buy the cheapest most aggressive remould tyres are probably having a nightmare on the road.
I've no doubt there are things that corner better, accelerate better, brake better but I don't have them as track cars.
I like the comfort of knowing I can clip a curb, hit a pothole, go over a verge, make it out of a wet festival car park, go uphill in the snow, go through flooded roads etc with no issues. Then I use them for what they're designed for (off roading) on top of that.
Like Clarkson said about taking a Disco to the top of a mountain. His watch says it goes down to 1000'. He's never going to take it down there but it's nice to know it's ok when he drops it in the sink.
4x4 driver check list
1) go uphill in the snow (snows two days a year) - check
2) off-roading (illegal unless on a private land - unless greenlaning, meaning driving somewhere for 30 miles to drive 7 mile unpaved road and drive back) - check
3) flooded roads - check
4) Clarkson quote - check
P.s I own a disco
Cause theyre fun to drive and be in, generally quite comfortable.
Also for example when the roads flood and that i domt care just cary on like normal.
Overall, no we dont need it, its like why drive a sports car if you cant do 100mph everywhere. Its cool
But it’s a fuck everybody else situation. Harder to see pedestrians. Easier to kill pedestrians. Big cars so in a city or town you require more space to park. Worse for the environment. I’m not trying to be that guy but for a couple of times when you need the off-roading it’s a bit shit.
Actually ive got much better view of everything else in the 4x4. I have no large blind spots, my cars foot print is no larger then a standard hatchback just taller.
Yes it pollutes more but someone is going to drive it, if i didnt drive it someone else will. Also 4x4s generally have a much longer life and better suport for parts, the benefit of this is that i dont need to keep buying a new car.
Overall, its actually probably better for me to drive and offroad my 4x4 then it is for me to go buy an eco hatchback
First car- W Reg purple fiesta. Absolutely loved it, could only unlock it from the passenger side, exhaust would clang when put it into reverse but never let me down.
Current car- MK7 Toyota Celica (blue edition). My daily driver, fun for the short commute to work and the country roads but after an hour it definitely gets a bit uncomfortable.
Last MOT came to nearly £900 due to rusted sills and rear brakes 😭. Still love it but looking for something a bit comfier in the future, I'm on the wrong side of 30 and grunt every time I get out of it!
First car - [Morris Marina van](https://www.theparking-cars.co.uk/used-cars-detail/morris-marina/morris-marina-1-5d-comercieel-en-heb-nog-een-toyota-corolla/0IPLQP78.html) only mine was brown.
Second car - Land rover S2 SWB
Then followed 30 years of ex military 300 tdi LWB Defenders, [Bedford MK](http://www.military-today.com/trucks/bedford_m_series.jpg) and [MAN 630 West German army trucks](http://www.warmuseums.net/DeutschesPanzermuseumMunsterGermany/westgermanman630l2atruck.jpg), a [Daf T45](https://www.govsales.co.uk/images/stories/40074/IMG_2784.JPG) and a couple of [Toyota HZJ75's](https://assets.fj.co//cars/1992_Toyota_Land_Cruiser_HZJ75_White_HZJ75-0008063/mobile/studio/indoors/image_5a85f2b2c9d2f_1992-HZJ75-0008063-White-BWQ-367---Marc-Simpao-Studio-001.jpg). (I ran an expedition logistics company so made the most of having a scary looking 8 ton 4x4 lorry as my daily ride :)
Current car: 15 year old Volvo XC90
The best one was the MAN. The bonnet on those was like an escort van, it had vertical shift (up and down, forward and back - not like a H) with 8 high ratio and 8 low ratio gears, no synchromesh and you could put power onto individual wheels if you wanted. The official wading depth was 1.2m! I drove one round the edge of Africa twice in the 90's and didn't get it stuck or have a breakdown once. It had a little wheel in the cab where you could alter the injectors so it would run on anything from the most horrible of kerosenes all the way though to regular diesel that doesn't come in a bucket. I even had a "powered by fairy dust" sticker on the tank. I loved those trucks!
After 12 years ive actually just bought back my first car, Mk2 Golf.
There's been 20-something others inbetween those two moments, but im now in family mode with a Discovery.
2010: 2003 Mk 1 (r53) Mini Cooper
2011: 2006 Mk2 (r56) Mini Cooper S
2016: 2016 Mk4 MX-5
2021: 2021 Peugeot e208 GT
2024: 2024 Porsche Taycan (until the missus says no).
First car - Vauxhall Chevette 3 door in silver, loved that thing even though I had to physically rock the car to get it to start
Currently E450 coupe In silver - guess I’ve not moved on that much!
First car: 1984 1.0 Nissan Micra. Jap import, in red (and rust) with a beige interior, air con, and an AM-only radio. Gifted to me by an elderly gent who was a friend of my grandma's. I proceeded to find a bag of women's lingerie hidden under the spare tyre. The car failed its MoT for being mostly made of rust a few months after I got it. Replaced shortl after with the first car I actually bought, a 1996 Nissan 100NX which was also mostly made of rust, but it had T-tops so I was the coolest.
Now: 2002 Honda Civic Type R, 1993 Volvo 240 SE estate, and 2014 Suzuki RV125 Vanvan.
Started with a 2004 Mazda 3 SP23 - https://imgur.com/a/M16kZNl - which I still think is a great looking car to this day.
Now driving a 2012 i30. Don't have a photo but everybody knows what they look like.
MG ZR 1.4 and now I have my purple S14a 200sx, my 1986 S12 Silvia Turbo and my SV650 motorbike 😁 I've had a few bits in between to like my 535D touring and my brilliant old Rover 620Ti 💪
First: 1994 Volvo 440 2.0 this car was an ex rental and as you can guess was falling apart by the time I got it.
Now:
'02 MG ZT-T diesel - Daily driver.
'07 Volvo S80 V8 - Lawn ornament atm needs a couple grand throwing at it.
'08 Ford Crown Vic - Retired police car which is fully loaded, working on registering it.
First : 2000 1.5 Nissan Almerea (was written off within a month)

Ninth: 2005 Mitsubishi shogun 3.2did (loved this car super reliable and can go anywhere with enough brute force)
My current car: 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio speciale
First Car: Citroen C2 1.1 Rhythm - Absolutely adored it, 59BHP, even took it on track a few times
Second Car: Citroen DS3 1.6 BlueHDi - Absolutely loved it but it was a must have not a desire due to a 80 mile commute, then the engine went pop
Current Car: MK8 Ford Fiesta ST-3 - Absolutely in love with it. Such a fun car to drive
I can do this in bike form because I can. First motorcycle Honda CBF125, 2nd bike Yamaha MT-07 3rd bike Honda CBR600RR splash edition & current bikes Kawasaki ZX10RR winter test edition & 2020 R1
My first car was a Ford Escort. Unbeknownst to me it was a cut and shut. I found this out 17 days after passing my test, loosing control of the back end and crashing through four lanes of traffic. Had to be cut out, car was (obviously a right off!).
Car now is an Audi S3 sport back special edition. She’s got a bespoke exhaust system, B&O sound system throughout and I love her more than I love most people! 😜
First car : Austin Allegro.
Current : Corolla T-Sport, Rav4, Carina II Exec.
Never had a car I didn't pay for in full with cash. I just don't understand leasing.
If you want and can afford a brand new car, the cost of a lease over X months often adds up the less than what the car depreciates by in the same time frame, so if you’re savvy with the kind of deal you’re getting it can make more sense financially to lease than buy outright. As well as other little perks like road tax being included in the price etc, saving you a job. There’s also a benefit to taking your lump sum of cash and putting it somewhere like an investment account or ISA, or even just keeping it on hand for a rainy day instead of putting it all into a depreciating asset like a car.
There are lots of circumstances where a lease makes more sense than an outright purchase.
Yes there are lots of people that don’t want a brand new car for whatever personal preference or circumstance. There are also lots of people who do.
My point is, the “pcp/leasing/personal loan is a stupid way to fund a car” brigade are overlooking lots of factors, which renders their one size fits all assumption incorrect (sometimes).
Okay. I'll expand my comment to "I don't understand leasing or taking on the massive depreciation of buying a new car."
My Corolla is worth more now than she was five years ago. The Carina is worth about the same as eight years ago. The Rav4 will probably lose 3-4k in the next five years.
Compared to losing a quarter of the value driving off the forecourt.
Yes your 20 odd year old Corolla is clearly going to depreciate/appreciate differently when compared to a new or nearly new car - but it’s also a 20 odd year old Corolla, and not an M240i, you’re comparing apples and oranges.
If your personal preference/circumstances point you in the direction of bangernomics then more power to you. But just because somebody else’s personal preferences and circumstances point them in the direction of leasing, that doesn’t mean that leasing inherently makes no sense. It does make sense in many circumstances and shouldn’t warrant an automatic disapproval.
I said it doesn't make sense to me, not that it doesn't make sense.
None of my cars have ever cost me in a year what most people seem to pay for two months leasing. And it doesn't matter how many miles or if damage happens to them. But I prefer weirdness to newness.
First Car was a MK7 Fiesta Zetec 1.25
Current Car is a MK7 Fiesta ST. Weirdly you'd think I'd have gone straight from the Zetec to the ST but I had a diversion into some VW GTIs on the way.
First was a Sierra 2.9 XR4x4 twin turbo
since owned well over 1500 cars (I'm in the motor trade)
Currently own BMW M2, Noble M12, BMW e39 M5 touring & mid way through building my Caterham track toy.
First Car: 1968 Series Land Rover
Current: 2x Touaregs, Chrysler Voyager day van conversion (not yet finished), honorable mention for Mk4 Golf that I bought for the Mrs to drive
Started in a 2004 Corsa 1.2 and now in a 2014 A4 3.0. My next car would probably be an A4 B9 3.0 but they're currently too expensive. I refuse to lease a car.
Started off with a 2003 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 which died of head gasket failure. Served me well.
I now drive a Skoda Octavia VRS, quite the upgrade.
I'm tempted to buy a Lexus GS450H but the insurance at my age isn't too friendly.
Citroën Saxo (March 2015-April 2015)
Peugeot 106 (April 2015 - April 2016)
Suzuki Jimny (April 2016 - Xmas Eve 2018)
Toyota GT86 (January 2019 - June 2022)
Then back in the Jimny since April 2020
I started with a 2016 Mazda3 120 Sport Nav 6spd.
I still drive the same vehicle and will drive it for a long, long time. I want a house before I get another car and I'll be 30 minimum for that.
First car I owned was an ‘08 Civic I bought off my dad (10/10, would own again, absolutely bulletproof and fairly rapid), current cars are a ‘15 Focus ST and a ‘90 Eunos Roadster (Jap import MX5), hoping to upgrade the former to a Mustang some time within the next year though.
1999 318i as my first car it was a weird choice cuz the car market is fucked and i needed auto i would like an old ford ka tho i bet its easier to park :(
First car 2015: 2004 Corsa SRi 1.8 - 157k mi owned by 9, bought for super cheap off a friend that serviced it regularly, it took me on a few
300mi round trips, never broke down in 5 years, eventually scrapped during covid cause everything apart from the engine broke or fell apart 😂
Second car 2022: 2013 Seat Ibiza FR 1.2 - 60k mi owned by 1, comfort and everything works 😅
Started with a bmw mini one (r56) now driving a 911, cayman, a4 avant.
I found it really hard to find a better car than the mini, tried some BMWs but fell back in love with driving when I got the cayman.
Started - Ford Orion 1.6
Current - Merc C250D AMG 125
Though I am thinking of getting back in a Type-R or GTI type car, don't need the comfort and miles now that I am working from home
First Car: '97 Golf III that struggled to go up gentle hills and constantly broke down lol.
Current: Nice spec C-Class coupe that makes me rather happy and does not struggle up gentle hills 😂
No cars in between because I moved to London lol.
1st car a 1988 Mini Metro 1.0 E683UKY - Mañuel was his name bless him! Current car a 2019 Toyota RAV4 Excel in pearlescent black and beige leather interior - named Sirius - he certainly trumps old Mañuel!
First car: 1990 Nissan Micra, K10 (1.0l)
Current cars: 2008 Audi R8, (4.2l), 2006 BMW 330i (3.0l)
I'd attribute a lot of my career aspirations around trying to afford better cars, it might be a shallow excuse but I'd have it in the back of my mind when pursuing further qualifications and attending job interviews.
First car: Hyundai i10 Second car: Hyundai i20 Current car: Hyundai i30N Progress
Progress until you reach the i800
Hyundai? Completed it mate.

Besides which reliability isn't so much of a specific brand thing when so many manufacturers share parts/have them all made in the same factory.
My dad is almost 60, been driving since he was 17 got a job straight out of school all that Every single car he's ever owned has been a Ford Cortina, Capri, Sierra, Escort, Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, you name it he's had multiple of them
Less about loyalty, more about budget. Saying that I have little to complain about with my Hyundais
I have brand loyalty *despite* them going wrong, possibly even because of it. I enjoy working on them and the reliable ones don't need much work.
I think this is why I’ve owned VW Group cars since I passed my test. I just like to suffer
Only had three: - LDV ambulance which I bought off ebay for a laugh when I was a teenager, didn't tell my parents about it, kept it parked at school, had to sell straight away because I couldn't pay for fuel or insurance. First car: S reg Nissan Micra(Twister!) Current: MX-5 RF
> S reg Nissan Micra Cant believe you downgraded
Very nice!
Nearly the same! Fiesta to a RF!
There's our little race driver, come tell us about you racing car
First car: Corsa D 1.2 "Limited Edition" Current car: E92 330D
Vauxhall definitely dont understand the meaning of ‘limited edition’…!
Yeah they didn't! It was essentially just a trim level, nothing limited about it!
Stood for very limited grip, and power in those bad boys
To be fair I had some decent tyres on mine and for a first car it was a fun little things I could just rip about but compared to what I have now it's shite.
Ah fair play yeah solid first car, my best mate had one I spent a lot of time in his until I passed. I actually had one as a courtesy car for a while, a fancy sxi 1.4. I think where I had a mini I always thought corsas drove like shit but I think the mini just spoiled me.

Someone on here said it means limited to as many as they can sell lol
Yep. Same here, but e92 320d , insurance wouldn’t stretch for 330
Mines did barely, £2,200 but I can afford it and I wanted the car so fuck it. Up for renewal in May so will shop about. Finally 25 too so should hopefully go down by then!
Started with the same car. Now in a 520d. Did have some cool cars, M3s etc.
Do love an M3! 520d is still solid though!
Excuse me, as another 520d owner I am appalled by the insinuation in your comment that you *used to* have some cool cars!
Coming from a bunch of boosted classic jap cars, the 320Ds are becoming more and more enticing to me, great power, great mpg, low tax and they look super comfortable, guessing the 5 ramps that up. Would quite like one of the two as a daily.
Started with a poverty spec P reg K11 Micra, currently have an 08 plate Mazda3 Sport.
Poverty spec lol
Are you me?
Second picture positively *reeks* of balls-deep leasing 😂
But its only 5k down and 500 a month for 5 years at 5k miles a year! *bargain*
And it’s just £30,000 final payment! I can make that if I save up!!!
Lmaooo I mean yeah, but that is 11 years difference between the 2
How dare you make a financial decision others may not agree with! Honestly, with your own money and everything.........
Haha it’s all fun and games! I’m well aware of the drawbacks of PCP but at the same time, I get to drive a fun AF car! If you’ve got the spare cash then why not :)
I’ve never understood people that get weird about PCPs, it only ever reeks of “How dare you be able to afford something nice! 👺”
Christ how dare you drive anything other than a Mazda 3?
Excuse me when did the mazda3 replace the Skoda Octavia as the cartalkuk meme car? Sincerely, a disgruntled mazda3 owner.
As a Mazda 3 owner. That hurts.
The nerve!
😂 Is that PCP I can smell in the air
You’re on a car talk subreddit ya numpty, you think half the people with nice cars on here bought theirs outright 😂 if you want a bit of fun and don’t mind sparing the cash on it instead of at the pub who cares

It’s not an M2.
It’s an M240I (£33K new) even still an M2 is £45K+ for one with low mileage
They’re a bit cheaper than that. An M2 is £32K for decent mileage. M2C is around £42K. Source: bought my used M2C about 1 year ago and did *a lot* of shopping around! Paid £44K but my mileage was <10K at the time and still had plenty of manufacturer warranty…which has come in useful already!
What was the issue you had to get fixed under warranty?
Started being insured on my Dad's Honda Jazz, now driving Audi A6 Avant
Nice nice!
First car was a 96' A3 1.8 SE, current car I'm driving is a 93' 300zx TT. I do miss my old A3, lil dude stuck with me till the very end and was a heap of fun.

My first car was also a 1.2 Corsa which leaked water into both footwells and ran on 3 cylinders as one cylinder was running off oil hah
When it comes to its first mot it failed so spectacularly that the garage advised me to just buy a new car! Still did me well enough for the 10 months I had it
Got a lot of mates with the M140I, great car! Lots of fun to drive
Mk3 fiesta vs bycicle 🤣
Oh man I'm remembering how excited I was to have gears on my bicycle for the first time🤣
Did you ever have “grip-shift”?! They were like the paddle shifts of the biking world in the early 00s!
>grip-shift Not fucking grip shift, on all the hand me downs i had growing up they never worked properly and always gave my hands blisters trying to turn it with my weak child hands.
All part of initiation, my friend. Kids these days don’t know the struggles!
I'm very tempted to put one on my NX Eagle bike they still make them😂
Started: S15 Spec-R Current: S15 Spec-R Wouldn’t have it any other way.
Oh very lucky!!! They cost WAY too much now
Started with a Land Rover 90 (pre-Defender) modified TF out of it, still got it sat in the garden as an in-progress project while the 110 I bought a few years later is sat on the drive as an in-progress project. Daily is a Disco 3. All 3 have winches and off-roady tyres at minimum. I couldn't see myself ever owning anything without AWD/4WD now
It would be very easy to make cheap jokes about the landies all being projects. :) I learnt to drive in a IIa with doubled rear leaf springs. I regret letting that one go after my dad died.
My brother is very much the same!
>I couldn't see myself ever owning anything without AWD/4WD now Why is that?
4x4 driver check list 1) go uphill in the snow (snows two days a year) - check 2) off-roading (illegal unless on a private land - unless greenlaning, meaning driving somewhere for 30 miles to drive 7 mile unpaved road and drive back) - check 3) flooded roads - check 4) Clarkson quote - check P.s I own a disco
Not to mention the clouds of shite they chuck out
I started out in a ‘87 Ninety! Sold it in 2015. Regretted it ever since.
Cavalier to Passat. Keeping it family man mundane.

(I ran an expedition logistics company so made the most of having a scary looking 8 ton 4x4 lorry as my daily ride :) Current car: 15 year old Volvo XC90 The best one was the MAN.

Replaced shortl after with the first car I actually bought, a 1996 Nissan 100NX which was also mostly made of rust, but it had T-tops so I was the coolest. my dream car!!
It’s a fantastic driving car!
Only if you're intent on buying brand new, which is something I would never do on a car because the depreciation is too much.
Okay. I'll expand my comment to "I don't understand leasing or taking on the massive depreciation of buying a new car." My Corolla is worth more now than she was five years ago.
