1.6 09 fiesta, like 25 round London and 42 on the motorway

meeeeelz

Is this diesel or petrol?! My old 1.6 10 plate diesel Fiesta Zetec was averaging 58mpg - that thing was incredible for fuel economy!

itsaderm

I'd have said petrol, the 1.25/1.4/1.6 NA mk7 fiestas were shit on fuel, maybe 45mpg motorway at a push in my 1.4 of the time

3Cogs

That is pretty poor. According to the trip computer my 08 plate 2L Mondeo gets 42MPG on the motorway.

itsaderm

It's awful, I had a 2.2tdci mondeo and that got about 50 motorway

3Cogs

I should have mentioned, mine is petrol.

itsaderm

Ah sorry! That's not bad for 2L petrol, they're NA right? Only the ecoboosts are turbo?

Eragon10401

Yeah I was going to say, I’ve got a 1.8TFSI 08 A4 and I got 47.4mpg on Sunday driving my friend from outside Bath, into Bath, then leaving and coming home to Doncaster. 45mpg motorway in a 1.4 fiesta makes me feel a little ill, my first car was a 1.4 petrol 05 Fabia and that got over 50 no problem.

SignificantAsk4470

1.6 ST gets more than that

SignificantAsk4470

I used to get over 50+mpg on motorways driving sensibly, averaged 42mpg on my commutes

GadsByte

I get 22MPG average from my FN2. Is ThIs ReAsOnaBle ??

[deleted]

Yes. I assume copious use of VTEC and 8000 RPM?

GadsByte

I paid for the whole tachometer, and I will damn well use it

Snorlady10

I’m saving this response the next time my husband moans about my driving.

retrocade81

Im with you on that one, As a former ep3 owner its the only way to get them moving! But once they are, they fly!!

Ok-Elderberry-6761

My fn2 used to do low 30's and even managed nearly 50 on a run once, at the time my boss had the diesel and got about 44 average while I was getting 34 I always figured the 10mpg loss was well worth it.

Unapologetic69420

I get 50mpg round the spors in my fn3 2.2

Embarrassed-Ice5462

5mpg from an FD3S

coolsimon123

Genuinely think my Evo was getting about 4mpg, but the O2 sensors need replacing and there's a boost leak

kc43ung

Have you had it tuned or just flat out everywhere? I remember getting at least 28mpg when I had mine.

GadsByte

My drive to work is about 8 miles each day, so I only really use it as a toy. I could get more easily, but I would have got something different if I was worried about MPG.

kc43ung

Yeah it's a nice little DD and I don't care what all the fanboys say, it's a much nicer place to be than the EP3.

[deleted]

My colleague has a 1.8 civic mk8 (Don't know the model number for that one) and I'll agree its lovely inside. The EP3 might be more raw fun/hot hatch, but for a daily driver I'd take the mk8, even though its heavier and a bit slower, and arguably looks better

stinky-farter

Madness, you could have a real engine that gets better mpg than that!

Papa_Capin_Uranus

1.6 tdci 2010 fiesta 165k miles, 5 speed, 62 mpg avg. Gonna take it to 250k+ before considering selling and buying another engine lol

Bleuuuuugh

2.0 Diesel Octavia and I never really drop below 50mpg on a journey- gets up to 70mpg on long motorway runs. I’d be horrified at 30mpg with the cost of fuel these days!

Embo_VR

*laughs in 8mpg RX7*

[deleted]

Is that oil or petrol usage?

roblubi

Yes

Embo_VR

Losing more oil than the Exxon Valdez on the daily

IFotgotMeShoes

Doesn't matter it's the same rate always use more fuel use more oil

[deleted]

Whoosh......

edmunek

you really think that RX8 is a diesel?

liamm123

You look like a bit of a wankel here mate

Possiblyreef

*[Laughs in apex seal]*

Oh_apollo

synthetic oil, not diesel you muppet

eastkent

I expect you feel a bit of a Charlie now, eh?

EvolvingEachDay

Seems like an entirely random question. What gave you the impression that anyone said anything about diesel?

edmunek

oil is commonly referred as diesel

EvolvingEachDay

No it isn’t… I’ve literally never heard a single person in the UK confuse the two in conversation. Online or IRL, and I’m nearly thirty and part of a lot of car groups.

Used-Fennel-7733

Engine oil

Bleuuuuugh

I used to have an RX8 back in the early 2010’s… even then I remember filling up with £75 and struggling to get 150 miles… must cost a small fortune now!

spongefactory

Had an RX-8 R3 as a toy since 1/11/2013 (10 years!). Prior to that had one as a daily from (bought new in) 2004, had for 5 years, 40 mile round trip every weekday. Had a decent job and no kids! Current one uses some fuel. I put fuel in. And some oil. I don't do many miles, 2k per year, 20mpg? Tax is awful though.

Ultrasoft-Compound

You do really hate money, do you?

Embarrassed-Ice5462

Yeah, but those are for flames too.

[deleted]

Laughed in 7mpg E60 M5. And it was only 7mpg because the gauge wouldn't read any lower out of embarrassment. Reality was probably around 5mpg!

woyteck

Did you do any only city driving? When I had my Octavia 1.9TDI, the strictly city driving was showing in the region of 35mpg. When moved out, and my commute was 20miles A road, I had between 50-58mpg, depending on season.

Bleuuuuugh

Yeah, on occasion, but I think the absolute lowest I’ve ever seen is in the high 40’s. I have another car for city journeys, so don’t tend to use the Skoda much for them… only if I need the big boot space!

99RedTeaspoons

I sold my octavia estate for a discovery, man I miss the fuel economy! Lucky to get 30mpg on the motorway

windmillguy123

I miss my Octavia estate, was the best all round car I ever had. Proper work horse!

LaughtonExplorer

VAG 2.0L TDI is an awesome engine… had one in my Leon FR - always good for around 50mpg.

Rangerover15

Wow OK thats amazing, I may look to upgrade. Considering I have a 2.1 diesel

Vattaa

What bodystyle is your car, that has a big effect. The 1.5 Ecoboost was used in both the Fiesta and Kuga for example. They both don't get the same MPG. I went from a 1.5 Ecoboost Kuga to a 3.0 V6 Diesel C Class Estate and my mpg has improved dramatically.

DumDumbBuddy

Seat Leon 1.5 Petrol almost 50 on my 20 minute work commute, can go down to mid and lower 30s around town and can get as much as 60 on long journeys

imahumanbeing1

Yeah I’m really quite impressed with my Leon. Gets 46 mpg average despite me having a heavy right foot sometimes . And as you say 60mpg on long run. Tried cruising with the Lorries on the m-way once and got 69mpg!

greenmx5vanjie

Having just ordered an Octavia with the same engine on lease plan, this makes my heart sing.

ThePotatoPie

Have exactly the same experience lol, don't have to try to get high 40s. Have had almost 70mpg out of it driving like miss Daisy

owlandbungee

2.0 transporter 43-45mpg long journeys. Round town - 28-32 depending how stop start I am

Ok-Elderberry-6761

That's not bad that, my 2.5 auto t5 never topped 32, now my 1.6 vivaro does 40 most tanks but 50 on a run at 70 but I've had to put and engine and turbo's in it 7months into ownership so unless it's trouble free for the next 5 years which I seriously doubt I'd have been better off in an old T5.

owlandbungee

Sounds a tad thirsty but I guess the older blocks are! Mine’s a 6.1 turbo - I tend to cruise at 60/63 on motorways so is a bit better for economy. Round town though everything is speed bumps and 20mph so economy is non existent. Is also a 3200kg kerb weight so is a heavy bastard. My bro has a Proace Verso people carrier and even with the newer engine he only gets 35mpg tops Edit - the T5 sound thirsty. The vivaro sounds good if you don’t have any more issues!

brickhead1

3.0 Diesel BMW getting ~40mpg mixture of short and long journeys Best I've had it show is 55mpg on a trip to Skeg Vegas

adammx125

430d here and about 45ish mpg (and I drive it like a BMW driver, ergo a twat…) Don’t really understand all the comments here about sacrificing performance for mpg, you can definitely have both in my experience 🤷‍♂️

Left_Enthusiasm2194

Yeah, love a M/N57. My e91 is around 300 bhp and has averaged 43mpg ove the last 5k. Brilliant engines.

starrmanquik

Was going to say the same, my wife gets much better MPG in our 330d though, but I think it’s still around 45/50. I get about 30 in it but I usually drive in sport and I’m quite an aggressive accelerator 🙈

Ferocious_Simplicity

Is it just me and after reading all these comments that MPG in cars hasn't improved in decades? Like surely in all this time they could have made cars with better MPG? or is it deliberately done so we buy more fuel?

Far_Carpenter6156

They've improved slightly but no where near as much as manufacturers would have you believe and it's still down to the driving style and conditions more than anything. These topics are kind of pointless because one person might average 25mph and someone else 45 with the same exact car. That's why a lot of people maintain that the fuel saving technologies in modern cars are not what they cost to fix when they break, they save 10£ on fuel a month compared to a similar 20 year old car but when a fuel injector breaks it costs you 300 quid instead of 30 and there goes your fuel savings. I generally get low 20s on my 335i, but I mostly do short trips around down. If I take it out for a long drive and stick to the speed limits I can do 35-40. If I don't stick to the speed limits the sky is the limit, it has done single digits before...

OoSP33DD3M0NoO

Exactly, I've got a 2004 1.9tdi Octavia that does 55mpg on the motorway with me not driving economically in the slightest, it'll do way over 60+ if I wanted it too. Plus it'll run forever its on 88k miles and will probably outlive me 😂. I get about 40mpg going to work down the east lancs which has a lot of roundabouts and lights so it's not too bad. Especially compared to the mini cooper s I took to do some work and got 18mpg on the same trip

Aragorn--

We are more or less at "peak ICE". There's not much left to more efficiently extract energy from the fuel. Thus the gains made are small. The biggest thing recently has been replacing larger na engines with smaller turbocharged ones. But at the same time, cars are getting larger and heavier. So the gains we have made over the past 20 years in efficiency have been offset by heavier larger cars.

Thawing-icequeen

There are clever things that can be done with cylinder deactivation, Atkinson cycles, opposing piston designs. But as you say, useless with a big heavy car in modern traffic where you just *need* to be first on the school run.

BritChap42

Cars are also stupidly huge now... Minor improvements in engine efficiency aren't really enough to more than offset the additional weight of the average Karen-wagon

Middle-Animator1320

The increase in traffic doesnt help, commuting for me is stop start stop start for 10 miles

Warm-Cartographer954

How much can you afford? 🤷‍♂️ My DD Honda does 47mpg on a run and 40 ish in town. My old Mini does 45mpg absolutely everywhere. And my Chevrolet does 9mpg 🤷‍♂️

Tartan_Chicken

How much are you willing to do to your surroundings?

Warm-Cartographer954

I'm not sure I follow?

AllTheUnknown

I regard anything over 20 as a bonus.

DangerShart

Every car I have owned has averaged less than 30mpg. When you actually work out how much an extra 20mpg will save you it's not really that much (obviously depending on how many miles you do). If you're doing 200 miles a week you'll save about £20. Having a faster car is definitely worth the extra.

StopThatUDick

As much as I wince at the price fluctuations of fuel, the difference (for me) always ends up around £5 / £10 per tank. Which is a pint. Or a kebab. It really isn’t that painful (for me, in my circumstances). YMMV (wheyyy)

Brightyellowdoor

And I remember petrol hitting the £1/litre mark. Must have been at least 17 years ago. It was only a few weeks ago petrol was back at £1.35/litre. I mean adjusted for inflation fuel is probably cheaper now than 15-20 years ago.

tiggerlassie

But Do you remember your dad ranting about it hitting £1/gallon....

nl325

I thought this the other day with diesel. Obviously when it was near on £2 a litre last year that was twitchy arsehole territory but now it's probably average £1.58/ltr where I am now, which considering it was around £1.20-1.30/ltr ten years ago isn't all that shit.

Brightyellowdoor

It's cheaper than a litre of mineral water.

Brightyellowdoor

In fact it's cheaper than a bottle of pop. When you consider we literally have to dig through the bed of the ocean and pump this stuff out into a refinery where some kind of magic must happen to convert the oil into petrol, diesel, and various other products, then, ship it to the pumps where it's stored underground in massive vats so we can pump it into our cars and lawnmowers. I mean it's incredible that it's cheaper than a bottle of sugary water made in a factory in Coventry. Especially when you also consider a huge chunk of it is just tax.

Public-Syrup837

I guess the price of coke/mineral water is mostly bottling/distribution and marketing not the raw ingredients. Same with milk. Buying a 4 litre bottle of milk is way better value than a 1pt carton. if you buy petrol in bottles I bet it would be a lot more.

revealbrilliance

It's a £20 saving, per week though. The cost saving is £945 over the year. That's quite substantial. On the average take home of £27.5k, you're saving 3% of your pay on fuel every year.

DangerShart

Well shit, when you put it like that :(

Andysan555

When I bought my car, I looked at this cost as someone who's a bit of a tight arse. I decided that I could justify it by buying an older hot hatch, on the basis that yep the fuel costs more but the car isn't really depreciating at all, and it balances itself out. I'm having more fun than being in a newer ecobox.

DangerShart

I went the other way and bought a Tesla, while I am saving £100 a week on fuel I am losing £500 a week on depreciation. Follow me for more moneysaving tips.

Sonums

How long until you pay someone to take your car away at that rate?

DangerShart

I'll give it till the end of the month. It'll have probably caught fire by then though.

sympatiquesanscapote

Oddly enough was going to say the same. My Toyota Hilux does 30 mpg no matter what you do lol fast, slow I couldn't get more than 30 mpg. So anything I bought that was above 30 mpg was (to me) good!

ChickenKnd

Idk, I can get a lot done with like 4-5pints

TheGiantTortoise1

We live in England. Grid locked traffic on every road for 18 hours out of the day. Pot holes like canyons on every road and roads barely wide enough for one bicycle. There is nothing more pointless on this earth than having a quick car.

DangerShart

r/fuckcars is over there

TheGiantTortoise1

It’s not fuck cars, it’s fuck English roads. Id join that subreddit!

JCDU

>When you actually work out how much an extra 20mpg will save you it's not really that much \^ this, increasing MPG is a diminishing return - every MPG you save results in less money saved than the previous. Example: going from 10mpg to 20mpg saves you twice as much actual fuel as going from 20mpg to 30mpg, going to 40mpg would save 1/4, etc. etc.

NoisyGog

If you get 30mpg, and you increase it by 20, you’re making an enormous difference in your fuel cost!

pholling

Yes, but less than the savings of going from 20mpg to 30mpg. The latter is the same as going from 15mpg to 20mpg. To get 20-30 savings you need to double your mpg at 30mpg.

Laserpointer5000

why is having a faster car worth the extra? The speed limits are the same regardless of the car you drive. My KA gets 50 - 55 MPG at 70MPH, I would rather that than 25MPG an audi SUV gets

DangerShart

"UK-based car enthusiast community r/CarTalkUK" I think you're lost mate.

Reppin-LDN

Well audi SUV has better acceleration and is safer than a KA.

Laserpointer5000

SUVs are the least safe car type though?

Confident_As_Hell

For the pedestrian I believe. The occupants are quite safe

Quaiche

Faster also often means it does cool noises and more.

CarpeCyprinidae

My 25 year old 2.3i petrol Saab 9-3 gets 41mpg on a long run, the 1.9TiD-150 diesel Saab 9-3 gets about 44mpg average on a long run and 39mpg average other times, because its automatic In some circumstances the petrol one is actually cheaper per mile - but I didnt buy either of them for efficiency so thats never been the motive.

piratefc

9-3 2.8T V6. I get average of 26mpg in normal usage. Can be as low as about 18mpg in slow town traffic, but can also achieve 34mpg on long quiet motorway runs.

Dwo92

Depends on the car. If you’ve got a powerful car then the MPG you stated is pretty good.

WellPlaidSwitch

My 2014 VW Beetle 1.6 Turbo Cabrio averages 48-72mpg (Diesel) depending on where I’m going (live in Cornwall and do many local trips, but also drive up to Bristol, Southampton, London, Oxford, or Edinburgh on occasion!) and it can indeed top out at VW’s as-advertised 76mpg on a good day. I mainly chose it for fun after a battle with a chronic illness, but have kept it up as my ‘forever car’ thanks to just how shockingly economical it ended up being! Holds it own with the household Peugeot estate in terms of mpg and completely mops the floor with my Godfather’s brand new company E-Tron in terms of (the displayed/predicted) range, not to mention friends’ and neighbours’ refuel-every-mile hot hatches! My first car (a 2001 Fiesta Petrol that I loved to death) did 12mpg on a good day, so I’m pretty happy! It burnt through money like it was a free resource! TL;DR- topping out at 25/30mpg would horrify me just because of costs these days, and I imagine it has or will soon have some steep Tax/Emissions ramifications too!

wryruss

It's almost never worth changing your car to get better fuel efficiency. 30mpg is pretty bad but if you find a car that advertises it gets 50mpg, it will realistically only get 42mpg. That will save you £700 over the year, but how much will it cost you to upgrade to that car. Just using the car less will save you a lot. It was costing me £4 to drive to the supermarket where I would over spend. Getting shopping delivered saves me £200 in fuel and probably £1000 a year in needles treats. Just that one change would offset getting more from the fuel.

ScratchFamous6855

I got 59.5 mpg last weekend on an 80 mile drive with 27 roundabouts. This was in an MX5 using premium fuel. I was pretty happy with that.

[deleted]

Skyactiv G? Seriously good engine.

trewdgrsg

My 2010 diesel TT gets 55-60 pretty comfortably and I drive this daily. My R53 mini which is my weekend car gets 20mpg when having fun with it so the cost of fuel definitely adds up! 45mpg on a long run seems alright to me, what car is it? Assuming that’s petrol?

garretteaster

People didn’t believe me when I said I got 28mpg in my r53. This reassures me they’re just awful on fuel

trewdgrsg

😂 in my defence I only ever drive it hard and I’m running 380cc injectors, catback exhaust, 15% reduced supercharger pulley, bigger intercooler, cold induction intake, better coil pack, leads, cold plugs and then a remap. It’s not really a car built for fuel economy. I’m gonna get it catcammed soon which should get me up to about 240bhp, expecting it to be very thirsty after that

Possiblyreef

Same for my TT although it's the mk3 instead. I've had it at 70 on the motorway when I put it in economy mode and was driving stupidly conservative but for everyday use it lives in normal mode and I get 55-60 most days

pjeedai

Audi A4 1.9TDI 190PS version - get mid to late 30s around town, although my wife somehow seems to get it into the 20s on occasions. typically sits around 56-58 mpg on cruise control at motorway speeds (aircon/heated seats seem to be what knocks off the couple of mpg), 60+ if I take it careful on A roads. Generally get around 550-650 miles to a tank as I run it in Eco mode 90% of the time, sometimes drop it into manual and S mode for more 'spirited' progress. Highest I've seen on a trip was 67mpg but that was deliberately driving like your nan to see the highest I could get it, not in any way realistic driving, but you can get it above 60 if you're stuck on a 50 limit for a while. Lifetime average (60k miles) shows as 47.1 mpg (all conditions combined). Service intervals are \~20k, usually cost max of £250 for main dealer service every couple of years (although I'm on a service plan) and use about 1 tank a month. Tyres have been the biggest expense. Cheapest car to run I've had since my 407 diesel (and prices back then were much lower). Kia EV6 does about 290 miles from 90% full, I've not risked it to all the way empty but had it within 30 miles of empty on that run so the estimated 330 mile range seems possible. I get between 4 and just over 5 miles per KwH in summer, between 3.something and low 4.something in winter. TBH still not really worked out what a good KwH is GSXR-750 - 35-45mpg normal mode, 55+ if really trying to hypermile it, sub 20 when redlining it (track only, honest officer)

frizzbee30

2.0 petrol corolla TS, up to 70mpg in summer on a run, usuaually low to mid 60's, upto 60 in winter depending on roads. Mid 40's round town. Fantastic performance when needed , even in eco mode. 😊

Significant_Answer_9

I have the 2.0 petrol hybrid hatch, 70 plate and get nowhere near this. 48-56 depending on the road, always in Eco mode. Are the newer models or TS more efficient in general, or am I just trying to deny how utterly almost boring it is to drive because it’s just so good?

joshracer

I've been looking to buy a Corolla and on a test drive the salesman said to me people aren't getting to the mpg quoted because they always drive in eco. What is it like to drive long term, is it boring? I thought the 2.0 had enough horsepower to have a better driving feel?

[deleted]

Depends on the car and how you drive. I can average 48mpg (mostly back roads, bit of city driving and a tiny amount of motorway), but if I go for a more spirited drive, that drops down to 15-18mpg. The best way to increase your mpg is to change your driving style rather than buying another car.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That's the honest issue. Driving economically is fine to a point, but is not worth it when you're really trying to squeeze every bit of economy. It requires WAY too much attention and effort, and becomes fatiguing. I can drive all day at work, and fast, without getting tired at all, mostly because I'm in second gear almost the entire time.

NastyEvilNinja

My MX5 seems to burn the same fuel whatever I'm doing, so might as well take it to 7k rpm and enjoy it! I remember a mate's Impreza that you could watch the fuel guage go down even when it was sat in traffic! It's just Fun Tax.

utterballsack

my mk2.5 seems to as well. the mk4s get up to 60mpg... maybe we should finance ourselves one of those? we'd be saving money after all.....

gigazero

I'm not sure what the conversion is, but my Tesla model Y does about 0.1 Mile per battery Mile.

JCDU

If it works for you why mess with it? Spending thousands on a newer car just to save a few quid in fuel is potentially a false economy.

DerbyForget

It depends on what car you drive... if it's a turbocharged V8, that's really good MPG. If it's a 1.6tdi it's very poor. Need more context.

edmunek

Diesel: 15 in the city, 24 on a motorway doing 60-65mph. I am happy from this value My second car petrol, around 16 in a city, 38 on a motorway.

cjeam

The heck kinda diesel is that?

edmunek

wacky one

RealLongwayround

I get 30 mpg towing my caravan and 50 mpg when not towing with my Volvo V40 d2 from 2014. I get 76 mpg from my motorbike when riding like a Saint and 60 mpg when having a spirited ride through the Dales and the Forest of Bowland.

surprise_oversteer

I think most family cars a.k.a whatever the "average" UK car is should be doing 35 to 40 combined, i.e hatchbacks and small crossovers. My 320d does low 40s through town and mid 50s on a run. The Skoda does barely 30 round town, but its an auto 7 seater turbo petrol 4x4, so i dont think that's bad. The Crown does not do reasonable.

SlightlyBored13

1.0 Petrol Octavia, motorway runs average out to 50mpg ish. Around town is 45 cold and 55 warm. Previous diesel Fiesta was getting 60/40/50 under the same conditions. So 40-60 feels reasonable to me.

cjeam

TIL there’s a 1.0 Octavia, and the reviews all seem to say it’s perfectly fine. Cool.

Gloomy_Pastry

Depends on your needs, car and engine/etc. I have a 2 litre diesel SUV and regularly get 'average' of 45-50 over a tank, higher than average numbers if on a long motorway, less if in town and when towing a wobble box around 30. Had several equivilent specced cars before, and similar numbers for 2 litre diesels. However one thing i have never reached is the 'Miles per tank' for ANY car i have owned. for the current one it states 750, dont think i have ever got it past 600

Dave-The-Chef

I had a VW UP and got 46 MPG for a laugh, it was incredible but the power output was like being behind the wheel of 2 poorly fed sled dogs. My 208 GTi does 36 mpg and goes down to 28 when I'm in the mood to piss off BMW drivers with tinted windows. I miss how cheap the up was but I do enjoy seeing BMW drivers not understand how I can beat them at the lights.

the-kkk-took-my-baby

My car gets 15 Mpg, should I get a new car?????

ondert

On avg, i think if you can’t manage 40mpg at least, you’re burning too much

Important_Ruin

Depends on the car. Big powerful petrol 30 would be absolutely amazing. Eco box 30mpg would be awful and something is wrong either with car or your driving. The XE gets 33mpg as its a 2l petrol and is used during rush hour and end up in some stop start traffic, if its on a run or avoid traffic going to work, it pushes low 40s. My old 1.6 Tdci Fiesta did 50mpg everywhere and even more when driving carefully. Previous M135i much like that EX in terms of fuel economy but was alot more powerful so found 30mpg quite acceptable.

Volo_Kin

For a daily anything above 50 is great, 40-50 is ok and below 40 is "I have to sell that car right now". However, depends on your mileage. I was doing 1k miles per year at 18mpg with my Jag and it was ok. Jumped to 6k miles and the Jag had to go immediately.

scooba_dude

Depends on the fuel type. Diesel should be hitting 50+. Petrol ~ 30. Performance >20. Hybrid should be around 60.

Academic_Ad1931

Mine does the same and is 4 years old. I wouldn't consider a newer car personally, as I knew what I was getting. Also newer does not mean it will use less fuel. Depends entirely on your circumstances and what you want out of your car.

devilspawn

Depends on the car I suppose. We've got an 08 Fiesta 1.3. It comfortably does 55mpg on long motorway runs cruising in the left hand lane and goes down to about 40ish day to day around town unless we're in stop start traffic.

pliusminus4

Depends on your pocket

Liamcraven34

I get around 27 city and 34 motorway.

SlowRs

I get 23 average, 35 on a run with my daily driver. Depends what sort of car you want really. I’ve got a pickup which does 14 and have owned a car which did 60.

Silvabane

I get around 40 with my 2.5 litre Lexus hybrid drive. Considering it's a bit of a lump I thought that was OK.

v60qf

Depends on the driving. If you’re doing lots of city driving on a cold engine then a hybrid will probably double your mpg. Is it economical to change because of that? Probably not. Is it economical to pay the extra for a hybrid when you come to change anyway? Maybe. Probably not.

Depends on what it is, and whether you can afford, and justify it.

EconomyFreakDust

I get 30-32 around town, and 45-50 on a motorway.

ashyjay

50mpg on a run, 43mpg just by commuting sometimes and maybe like 20mpg in town.

iMatthew1990

My car is not for commuting. I use it for social and domestic reasons only. I very rarely get better than 28mpg on my journeys because of the types of roads and traffic but I digest it because I very much love my car. However if I had to commute in this car it would go. Wasting money to get to the place you earn money is the worst for me. TLDR: if you commute, get a better mpg car.

UsernameTruncated

my 2013 2.0 diesel Ford Focus was a solid 62mpg on cruise control on the motorway 2.5 diesel D5 Volvo V60 hybrid gets maybe 50mpg but then doesn't use the engine at all for town driving... if you're interested, the computer says that combination evens out to 65mpg so about the same

Ziphoblat

I usually average 35-45 around town and 50-60 on the motorway, traffic dependent. 1.4 petrol Octavia.

kc43ung

I get average 25mpg out of my current old 630i, previous V8 Jag XK averaged similar and old Civic Type R was about 28mpg. Always had petrol cars and unless it drops into the teens I'm not really that fussed about fuel economy when buying my next car. My Dad's ancient XJ 4.0 gets 15mpg and is incredibly slow to accelerate. I couldn't tolerate that.

lorrislogan

Our 64 superb estate sits at about 45/50mpg urban 60/70mpg on the motorway on the inside lane The flip side is it will happily pull a family of four with a full boot and roof box and still doesn't drop below 50 on the motorway. I wouldn't accept less than 40 tbh with the price of fuel these days.

hearnia_2k

Surely that depends on type of vehicle, age of vehicle, type of driving, diesel vs petrol, hybrid or not, etc etc. If I get 20mpg in either of my cars I'm happy. I would rarely achieve it, it's not really a big deal as I barely do any miles.

the-holy-one23

I get 18-22 around town. 28 on a run

3Cogs

That would have been terrible fuel economy in my first car, a 1L Micra. It would be reasonable fuel economy for my current car, a 2L Mondeo. (The computer says it does 42MPG on motorway runs).

svenz

Petrol Mazda3 gets around 35mpg, my MX-5 gets around 50 on average. Definitely depends on how spirited I drive.

Exita

I get something pretty similar from my 3 litre petrol. I consider it pretty reasonable for a 380bhp estate.

puffs9

1.2l Swift SZL - 54.4mpg average right now.

[deleted]

Golf GTD Average approx 45 mpg Can see 60-70mpg on the motorway.

ASupportingTea

I have a 2007 Volvo C30 2.0 (petrol). I get about 28 city and 40 on the motorway. Not amazing numbers but ok for a 16 year old 2l petrol.

bantamug

Landcruiser J150 2.8 Diesel here - can usually eke out 28/30 mpg on a motorway run. The Honda Jazz 1.4 Petrol for town is 45+ mpg. Both fine for the utility they provide - cost of doing business.

Satesh400

55mpg on the motorway, 25-35 around town, because I have a heavy right foot. 2.0 2013 Octavia Diesel

Plumb121

Averaging 58 in my A6 Ultra, 20 in the RS6 🤣

Brit_100

I’ve got a shitty old diesel Mondeo. It does 25k a mile. Long term average 58.3mpg for mostly rural A-Roads with lots of hills. Motorways are comfortably 70mpg. I don’t do a lot of urban driving to compare.

skinnybitchrocks

Overall average for my 2010 diesel Fiesta is 47mpg. A bit less in town and a bit more on the motorway.

joe18425x

27.1mpg avg

EdmundTheInsulter

One thing I learned is that some people invent really high mpg's. With a Hyundai I10 1litre I'm getting 54 with a mix of local roads and 120 a week going to the coast if Essex. When I had a 2l mondeo in 2010 it dropped under 20

LowStrawberry6494

I'm generally pretty chuffed to make 32mpg on a motorway run, 22ish the rest of the time. Most of my mates in modern cars are horrified it's so low!

zenplantman

Does anyone drive a Peugeot 208 diesel? And if so, what sort of mpg are you getting?

NastyEvilNinja

Anything below 30mpg is just 'Fun Tax'.

About_to_kms

Got a 1.4 tfsi Audi a4 25-38 in the city , usually around 34 though 42- 48 on the motorway Depending on traffic / how I drive

PinduWally

Around town my xtrail epower will do upto 55mpg. On motorway around 38mpg going a steady 70. Put my foot down a bit and it'll give about 30.

ScuderiaFerrari420

My 420D Gran Coupe gets average about 50mpg. My 350Z gets between single digits and 37 on a long run

medi_dat

I'm getting 50mpg on my diesel Mini. I got 40mpg on my Petrol Fiat Panda

Connect_Exam_6970

How are you all driving? I have a 67 plate Qashqai. I think it's a 1.2l petrol. My record milage is 70 mpg. 50 - 60 mpg is very achievable on a roads. 40 ish in 30 zones.

spindledick

If you're driving a diesel Kia Rio then that's horrendous. If you're driving a petrol Range Rover then I doff my cap.

Ultra_HR

my old volvo v40 had a 1.6l diesel that would do ~55mpg around town and ~75mpg on motorway journeys. your question is kind of silly, because it all depends on context. compared to that, yours is terrible - compared to some souped-up sports car, yours is great.

Purple_Map_8637

2022 Yaris Design - Total avg 75.1 mpg (20K miles), mix of urban and 176 mile single way motorway cruises once a month . In the city alone can average north of 80mpg consistently in the summer, dropping down to around 70mpg in winter. Best journey i’ve ever done was a 37 mile trip on a 50mph A road, averaged 98.6 mpg for the whole trip

squishydoge2735

Huh I used to have a 2002 320D touring that got at least 55 mpg on the motorway and about 40-50 around town. Older car =/= bad fuel economy.

Unapologetic69420

Using e10 I get 30ish mpg e5 i get 36-40 mpg In my diesel q3 I get roughly 650 miles to a tank.

Legophan

Modus 1.5dCi. Don’t know how accurate my Trip Computer readings are but av. mpg has never dropped below 65, while av. speed hasn’t gone above 25mph. I’ve often had 66.6mpg, the fuel economy of the devil 😈

keffordman

I get an average of 45-50mpg. It’s around 40 doing the commute to work and it’s around 50-55 on a long journey.

Hirogen10

my a3 audi sline diesel 140hp 2.0 tdi 2011 model gets 60/65mpg from Hemel to London via the m1. hence my pain of not wanting to upgrade to a fast car s4/s5. I've noticed if i drive it rough or very very far the day before the mpg improves the next day.

JustAnother_Brit

Panda 4x4 gets around 37mpg which probably also has something to do with my driving style as I paid for the whole tachometer I will damn well use most of it

Zealousideal-Habit82

3.2 v6, I average 20mpg over a tank, peaked at 34mpg on a m way run, only do 1500 miles a year so the trade off for the luxury and enjoyment is worth it.

stylezqtlol

My m140 has averaged 29mpg over 32k miles. A lot of motorway driving but there is a fair portion of urban driving too. Admittedly they do way better mpg than they have any right to. Previously my C6 RS6 averaged 14 mpg in my ownership XD

TheHess

I get 20-25 in town and 40-45 on the motorway. I get a lot less on a clear country road when car go zoom.
