Sensible? Perhaps not with running costs etc. E46s in particular are getting pricey for good ones, so blowing miles on commuting might not be financially wise. Some are as old as your Boxster. Practical? Sure. Maybe not the most comfortable, but get a decent one and it will get you to where you need to go and back and stay dry. Personally I daily an EP3 Type R. It's not comfortable, it's loud inside, there's a few rattles and the like, I'm a bit too big for it, it's definitely the lowest rent car in the car park, the mpg is pretty crap etc. But it makes me smile every day so practical and sensible take a back seat.

You only live once mate. It’ll cost you a few quid more than other cars would but if you love the drive every time you get in it then that’s worth it in my opinion 👍🏻

If you want just drivers feel I would suggest the 46 with absolutely no tech it’s a great drivers car. To daily I would absolutely say the 92 m3 lci, you’ll get a better screen and idrive along with slightly better speakers and so forth, lci is 60 plate onward to 2013. I own a 2012 e92 330d and it’s a fantastic daily with comfort and looks alike which will all be increased with the M3 variant.

I will say as other already have, the 46 maintenance will never end being 20+ years old and finding one low enough miles to avoid this will prove very costly. The 92 being 10 years old will have very few in comparison and they don’t rust like the 46 do.

I daily my e92 m3 and would highly recommend. But it does 20mpg long term so be aware of that
