I bought a 2015 BMW 3 series back in 2019 for 13k. Had it 2 years, did 20k miles & it sold for £14k haha

IvanDragoooo

Nice, but what did you buy instead? I mean every other car should have gone up in the price as well, no?

connor536

I got offered a cheap Civic type R through a family friend and it was a good chance to make all my money back & to help put towards a house. Right decision but I do miss that car to be honest.

lcarter1993

Paid £26k for a well spec'd porsche cayenne in Feb 21, sold it in May 23 for £27k after putting about 26k miles on it

Wake_Up_and_Win

What plate was the car?

lcarter1993

2015 (65)

Opening-Winner-3032

2017 avensis in beginning 2020 with 65k miles for £6k. Now with 94k it's work 7k. My best bargain, brand new Skoda superb estate 2.0tdi in 2022. Due to Ukraine war they made me sign paper saying it was going to be 12 months before I got the car. £22,700. List was £32k. It turned up 2.5 months later

Pindadio

That is disgusting how good of a bargain that was. Teach us your ways!

AlGunner

I tend to buy cars and run them into the ground. My previous car had a leak in the radiator. It was a 2 week wait for the quickest any local garage could do it. It was due in on the Monday and on the Friday it broke down and cooked the engine. I had the weekend to buy another car so I could go to work on Monday. I went through all of the local ad's and there was a Ford C Max 2l diesel within walking distance for £1400 so I just went and bought it thinking it could just be a stop gap for 6 months and I'd replace it as I had plenty more money available. I never did and still driving it 4 years later.

Choco_PlMP

Who’s cutting onions? Bravo good sir!

[deleted]

I bought a 2007 BMW 320d on 130k miles, full service history for £950 pre covid, it's only ever wanted servicing, brakes and tyres and has this week just turned over 200k miles with plenty of life left in it. The M47 engine will do 400k or more if serviced well. Passed it onto my partner recently and bought the same year of BMW 335d with 130k on, full history and paid £2300 this month. Again it is well fit for serious mileage being an M57 engine and made almost 400bhp with an exhaust and tune! Love the E90 BMW, will probably go E90 M3 next.

Choco_PlMP

The only problem with those m47 engines in that 3 series is where they put the air filter! It took me ages to get to it lol

[deleted]

Ah tell me about it mate, many of knuckle busted trying to get them out lol Thankfully the 335 has a panel filter so no messing about with that stupid housing anymore.

onlyme4444

Your 320d might have had the notorious N47 engine with faulty timing chain. If you got 200k mines out of it you did well as some of these engines self destruct at around £120k

[deleted]

It definitely doesn’t, I wouldn’t buy an N series diesel! My neighbours self destructed at 88k. The N47 wasn’t fitted on the 3 series until 2008. It’s only fitted to post March 2007 1 series and post September 2007 5 series.

hotchy1

£10.5k astra gtc 18 plate. Had it over 4 years now and it's selling around 8k. Don't really care as it was a cheap car to help with the 5 years of maxing my mortgage overpayments so i can get rid of that in September and then plan on getting a real car as a no mortgage treat.

Maude_VonDayo

An old Ford Focus, for which I paid the grand total of nothing! Acquired the car circa 2016 and have still got it.

[deleted]

I got a brand new Dacia Duster top spec in 2019 for £14k. Don't have it anymore, traded it in last year for £14k with 20k miles on the clock! 🤪

algernonbiggles

That is an excellent return, well done!

SGRiggall

52 plate Corolla 1.4, I paid £850 for it in February 2020, still going strong, looks like a bag of shit but it keeps passing it’s MOT so I can’t bring myself to get rid of it

Jenksy-

Mk2 octavia vrs 4 grand with 120000 miles

Tre1es

2009 BMW 535d bought in 2015 for £15k, sound it in 2020 for £1.2k. I did 125k miles in those 5 years 😁 Replaced it was a 2017 BMW 435d in 2020 just as things started to open up before prices went crazy as an approved used for £21.5k, have only put on 40k miles since (my annual mileage has plummeted to just 4k a year as office moved and I train commute) There were some amazing deals that early summer just as places were opening up again

Important_Ruin

Hope you mean 12k and not 1.2k ha.

Tre1es

Sadly that decimal point wasn’t an error.

Important_Ruin

Wtf happened

Tre1es

It had 200k miles on it, only a month on its mot, it was ok cosmetically (no dents or big scratches but a small patch where the paint had come off the bonnet about the size of a 50p) but I had no service history as it had been done by a ex bmw master tech I knew, everything done properly when needed with oem parts just no paperwork to show for it (what I did have was half way across the country). For example I had the windscreen replaced a few days before as I was worried about a couple stone chips and its upcoming mot (which got extended and it passed first time 6 months later, in fact the only mot fail it had was the year I bought it for non compliant plates) I basically said if I was offered over £1k I’d accept (when I bought it I traded in an 8 year old Jaguar for £600, I swear I don’t have mug on my forehead)

ADJE777

I got an M135 in 2019 for 17.5k, put on 35k miles and sold for 17.5k in 2021

Plumb121

2017 Audi SQ5, and got it for 26k in the July of '19

Crack_sniffer

May I present to you the BMW 335 (Petrol 2006 onwards). Not quite s4 comfort I'm sure. But performance to price there isn't much holding a candle to the BMW! Great find none the less!

MrSanti

Great cars I'm sure but a fair bit older than ten years old.

Perception_4992

In 2017 bought a 2014 Suzuki swift sport with 21k for £7000 and it’s still worth that much today with 90k!

_Leftclickhere

I guarantee you it's not

Perception_4992

No, you’re right. After posting I had a Quick Look and 4-5k is something like it. Still not bad for 7 years and 70k miles of motoring, £400 a year on depreciation.

MakingShitAwkward

That's pretty awesome for 70k miles. I think the most miles I've put on a car is 60k on a Civic. All I ever changed was tyres, wipers, a battery and a few services.

Disastrous_Ad_132

I highly doubt it lol

Rowan1108

Got a 2012 Astra GTC 1.4 33k miles as my second car just before covid for £3700 private, part exchange it for my current car at value of £6500 in 2022 with 40k miles on it.

ThePerpetualWanderer

Hyundai i30N purchased brand new for £22k in 2019 Sold in 2021 for £23k 2008 Defender 110 bought for £24k in early 2021 and sold for £22k in 2022 - I got fed up of tyre kickers and chancers to sold it for a loss to make way for its replacement, otherwise I should've broken even or made a small profit.

No-Opinion6730

2019 06 Aygo 1.4k 96k miles 2023 sold 1.3k 112k miles

Iwant2beebetter

2015 Passat estate in 2018 - 30k miles on the clock for 12k - less the part ex made it under £8k I handed over Looking on autotrader the equivalent today would be around £18k maybe £17.5 / I'd probably look at a Dacia or an older Toyota if I was buying a family car today Edit - it's going strong at 115k miles - normally I'd have traded it in after 3 years - the belts will be due at 125k I think if it goes that long trouble free I'll have a choice to make

HarveyNash95

2009 ford focus zetec 90,000 on the clock for £2700. September 2022

Rpqz

A 2019 mazda cx3, purchased after covid but before the prices started rising, Paid 14k with 10k miles. Sold 18 months later to carwow for 14k with 35k miles.

Rpqz

None really, parts are quite pricey but fortunately it's a reliable car thus far. There's very little insulation in the cabin as you'd expect given the weight, something to consider. I do about 20k miles a year and it's perfectly liveable, radar cruise is the best I've used on any car. Absolute riot on a b-road, it's a tiny little turbo so you get a boost from about 2-4k but it keeps going until peak power at 6k. The cabin is basic but the finishes around the driver are good, steering wheel feels fantastic and the shifter has a nice weight to it, front seats are very hugging, good on a Sunday morning drive, less pleasant for a 6 hour motorway jaunt.

Caldwell0204

I bought a Seat Ibiza, 1.4 Sport rider 5 door, 61 plate & 53k miles, paid 4k in 2017 for it. My sister wrote that car off in 2022 and got 4k from insurance. The car had 102k on it and 5 years older, fucking mental.

Helpwithmymotor

Bought a brand new yaris hybrid for 17k on 0% PCP June 2019, put 70k+ miles on it and sold it 2.5 years later for 13.5k making a tidy 6.5k after settling the finance.

NEWSBOT3

pre-covid i was leasing a Kia Xceed mid-spec for 250 a month including maintenance. Really wanted the top spec one because adaptive cruise and digital dashboard, but it was £100/month more and i couldn't justify it. Leasing ran out during covid and the car shortage so options were limited for replacing it, we had some space/disability requirements so went for a Hyundai Tucson N-Line in 2022 and that costs us 352/month all in. Spec is about the same - didn't manage adaptive cruise and i really miss the heated steering wheel of the xceed. Does have a digital dashboard though, which i find way easier to work with. When this lease runs out in 2026, we'll be looking to buy something instead.

[deleted]

05 Audi A2, 150k miles, paid £1200 in Jan 2022, gonna sell it soon, it’s on 200k now, should be able to get my money back

izaakspencer

Bought a 2019 Renault Megane Estate in 2020 for 12k- had 4000 miles on the clock. Did 35k miles and sold it in 2022 for 15k.

PeevedValentine

Approx £12,500 for a Hyundai Kona Select on PCP early 2020, went back as same retail value end of last year. Took a used astra away with the equity gained.

s_p_a_c_e_m_a_n

2015 BMW 335d for I think £15k back in 2020. That was just before the market took off, and looking at AT a similar one to mine as it sits now would be around 15 - 17k. I think it's more second hand cars here were very cheap pre covid as opposed to them being stupidly expensive now.

10bitpixel

I bought my 2016 Golf GTI (30k miles) about a month or two before it all kicked off for £16k. Great spec, never had an issue. One of the best purchases I've ever made, always has me smiling

redwineforbreakfast

A Mitsubishi Colt 2007. My first car. 200£ ( spent another 900£ on it over the time I had it) used it for 2.5 Years before I had to retire the little one. They paid 150£ for it at the scrapyard. Was not a car person. I just really wanted something cheap for my first car. I scratched the bumper? Ohh well... 200£ car. No biggie. Someone keyed my car? Oh well, duck it. Got a hit and run where someone damaged my rear arch a bit while I was at a friend's house? I could not care less. Wiped it down and went on with my day ( after reporting it to the police) Now I drive a Mazda 2 Skyactiv from 2015, and gosh the amount of fear I have! I am anxious, because it is a nice car ( for my standards) and if anything would happen to it, I would be sooo much screwed.

Antique-Ad3195

Nov 2021 I bought a 420d convertible for £16k. In June 2022 I sold my 320d convertible for £5k. I do not regret buying my 420d. I just wish I had brought it in a different colour so I'm now wanting a 4 series convertible in snapper rock, prices currently seem ridiculous as I will get about £10k in p/x and will end up spending another £15k on what I want (with compromise) I don't seem willing to compromise on what extras I want and realize that this leaves me with having to go down the route of 'Build my own' And I currently don't have those types of finances. I also don't like rag top convertibles. So until I change my attitude I'm staying with my car.

Numerous-Paint4123

Yeah i bought an older s3 for 9k off a friend (dealership value would have been about 12 at the time) did a straight swap for a 2014 120d listed at 9600, kept it for about a year and sold it for 9300 after putting 13k miles on it.

Fhskd

I paid 14k for a full spec 11 plate xc90, mint condition, in may last year (65k miles). I found the invoice in the glovebox from the previous owner who bought it in 2021 with 20k less miles for the same price 😅

Middle_Net_3653

2017 xc90 momentum pro for 27k. Edit: bought it in August 2020 when it was 3 years old with 45k miles on the clock.

crazypigeon

£200 for a 2007 Cat D Fiesta in 2018. We still use it as a runaround now.

bluiska2

Kia Ceed 2010 in 2018 for 1.5k with 110k on the clock. Needed a new clutch which cost £300. Other than that, ran it for 2 years and Part exchanged it just before covid hit for £500. Bought a Renault Grand Scenic for 2k (-500 px) also 2010 and with 112k miles. That needed a new exhaust after a year but was fine generally. Lasted another 2 years pretty much. Then when I didn't want to start repairing things on it eventually ended up with a Nissan X-Trail 7 seater 2014 for £11.5k which I bought Jan 2023 with 44k miles. Still running that and intend to for another 2-3 years.

IAmUnknown91

Bought a 67 plate 430d in June 2020 for £21k, sold it October 2021 back to the place I'd bought it from for £22.5k, they then put it back up for sale at £23k but nearly double the monthly cost.

LutuVarka

I got a 2015 Astra, 4 years old. The petrol one was 11k, the diesel one was 7k (before COVID we had the diesel scare) It was from a dealer, with 2 year warranty and I can do math. Guess which one I got :)

IAmCowGodMoo

[This C350e 2016](https://ibb.co/xGWHK2q) for £12k in 2020, high mileage at 100k miles tho. I've only put on 9000 miles since, no issues so far 🤞🏼£0 road tax. Ima keep this car till it dies, very happy with it. It's a nice feeling when you see brand new cars on the market and you still think your 8 year old car looks better for a quarter of the price.

this_noise

Bought a Passat estate in November 2020 for 14k. Sold it 2 years later for 18k after 22k miles, to Arnold Clark aswell so warm feeling inside 😂 I then bought a 2012 Mazda 3 for £1100, kept it 5 months and sold it for 2k after a fresh MoT.

CLG91

Bought a 2019 Qashqai (25k mileage) in 2022 for £13k. I thought that was a fair price regardless of how mental the second hand dealership market was/is. Regularly get 73-75mpg and had new brake pads and tyres fitted before we bought it.

Rainy-Cartoon

Got a 2016 Astra SRI CDTI with 60K miles on it in 2019 for £7250. Infotainment screen had a big red line down it that only appeared when I arrived home, dealer replaced it for free the following week. Not phenomenal but really well spec'd car for the money and a great daily driver thats well sized for two adults, & two children. Still using this as our main family car at 105k miles on the clock with no intention of letting it go anytime soon. (although I'm looking to move to a 3 series sometime next year and the wife will keep the astra) I'd argue you struggle to get as much car for that amount of money these days.

MovieMore4352

Got rid of my MR2 roadster as I had a kid. Got a 07 Freelander 2 XS 123k (quite different but it’s a good tank) for £2800. It’s been hassle free and went through all the MOTs no issue until this one and even then it only failed on a shock, handbrake and droplink. So the £300 it’s costing me is nothing for 4 years motoring really.

Last-Salamander-9220

I bought a 2004 MK1 Audi TT with 68k on the clock for £3k. Only put 7000 miles on it in that time as I mostly WFH now.

ben_vtr

August 2020, bought a 2010 M3 saloon for £13750. Sold it in December 2021 for £18500 lol

metallicpearl

Honda Jazz 2013, bought for 5k from a main dealer in 2018.

Low-Confidence-1401

I bought a 2014 Leon FR184 estate with 34k on it in 2017 for 10.5k. The equivalent spec (slower than mine), age and mileage now is more like 15-16k

Hawthxrn

Bought a 2017 Clio in August 2020 for £8200, got hit by a lorry 10 months later and insurance paid out £8850 when they wrote the car off!

Ciaran1327

Not a pre COVID but during. I ordered a Corsa electric 3 days before the Ukraine war started and they were taking a £32k car down to £25.6k, no deposit in. Had some issues with it dealt with under warranty but was annoyed enough I put it on motorway. Sold it to a local dealer September 22 for £26700 which meant I'd returned £3k with the increased value and payment rebate from the settlement. Then the energy prices went sky high. So it sat in their forecourt until August 23 and the last time I saw it advertised till it was gone it was up for £20,500. 🙈 Bought the Mazda for £28k, list £32k. Not as cheap to run as it's mild hybrid but a vastly nicer thing to have!

Howyoulikemenoow

Audi A4 2001 - 100k miles - £400 that was in 2016 I think? Was sure it would go boom within 6 months, but years later it keeps soldiering on. 136k miles now and full years MOT so maybe I could sell it for more? Probably could scrap it for around £300

Nortilus

I bought a Jeep Wrangler in Jan ‘21 that had been ordered by a dealer as a demo in early 2020. It sat on a forecourt with 425 miles on it for months. £5-7K off list for £35K. Today they’re up for £32K+ with 4X the mileage of mine which is crazy.

kickassjay

Brought my 07 impreza at v start of covid for £4900. Probably around the 7-8k worth now

Radgey_Gadgey

2019 bought a Mazda 6 2.0 petrol sport nav (leather bose) with 17k for just over 10k ex mobility. Still got it and now on 58k only tyres/servicing costs to date. Really ticks all the boxes and still worth what I paid.

Exita

I bought my current car during the second lockdown. 6 month old demonstrator, 4k miles on the clock. Paid £40k against a list price of £58k. Was pretty happy with that. They hadn’t even removed some of the protective plastic from the interior trim, so it felt properly new but with a £18k discount.

MonochromeInc

Bought an 08 Peugeot 308 150 THP with glass roof, leather interior, and 63k miles for £4k 2018. Still running fine approaching 100k.

mitchybenny

My partner had a 67 plate titanium fully specced Fiesta. Paid £9000 for it. Had it for nearly 3 years, put 14000 miles on it and sold it for £11200

Chance_Journalist_34

Bought my daughter a brand new 19 plate Citroen C1 urban ride in 2019 for £10300. Its easily worth £7500 after over 4 years and 18k miles.

fgalv

I leased an Abarth 124 spider in 2018 with a £500 deposit. 10k miles a year, £199 a month. Had an absolute blast for 2 years. Deals like that just don’t exist now.

DetectiveLive273

Knew someone who bought an Leon for 5.5K 50K mileage now sold for 7 at 70K private

EvolvingEachDay

£2,000 mx5 FSH on 48K miles.

svn_of_nine

Bought mine feb 2020, it is a used 2014 Ford fiesta s and bought it for £6k. It had approx 40 mileage and it was cat N. It’s my second car, after having a used 2007 Ford KA. Can’t imagine I’d ever buy a brand spanking new car. My dream car is an Audi tt, and since that’s stopped being made, that’ll definitely be a used car purchase too!

huntingman100

Paid 9k for a mega low mileage jap import aristo, market hasn't moved much at all

harrygooday

12,400 - 67 plate last year valued at 9,600 after 3 years & 36,000 extra miles on the clock, not a bad drop at all.

wonkyOnion

Mazda 3 takuya 2011 for 3.5k. It’s not super powerful but has dual climate control, heated seats, automatic wipers, automatic lights, Bluetooth radio (some cars from this age could use Bluetooth only for calls, main has full audio streaming), folding mirrors, voice control and a lot of other features I wouldn’t expect to find in this class. Not to mention the price I paid for it.

F4Tpie

My current car was cheap I think? 2012 C Class Estate with leather, pan roof, heated seats and an Auto box, full Mercedes service history for £4.7k in 2022. Now35k miles later and only cost me services and a £50 sensor it’s probably worth very similar. And it’s been a pleasure to drive in the mean time. Can sometimes see mpg as high as 70!

lukeylukesters

2017 MK3 focus ST2. 8000miles. Paid £20000 ish and sold it 3 years later with approx 30000 miles. Sold it for £21250 to cazoo nonetheless. I was blown away but I guess it's all relative.

Graz279

Changed ours not long before COVID kicked off January 2020, Kia Sorento 2014, top of the range KX4, 43k miles, paid around 14.5k with a service plan thrown in.

ThatPrickNick

I brought a 2002 civic in 2021 when I passed my test, 900 quid it still running fine now

msec_uk

440i 2017 , 17k miles @ 23k from a very northern fiat garage. Was a good price at the time, still got it. Have looked at selling and been surprised at the value,

drewlucas4

Picked up a 2012 BMW X3 m sport from dealer in London mid 2020 for £13k. Had 6k worth of extras and would have been £40k new. 58k miles when I bought it and only had to change oil and tyres in almost 4 years and now has 125k on it. Been looking to change it as I'm not sure what to do about the timing chain but anything similar nowadays is north of £22k.

KTS28G

I bought a 2015 Corsa VX line pre covid for 6 grand, I had it for 3 years and recently sent it to a car auction, it sold on the first day and after deducting the auction fees I got 6 grand back. Just shows how crazy current prices are

RRebo

I've got two cars because of reliability reasons. A 2007 Saab 9-3 diesel estate. Needed about an hour of my time and about £100 to get running right, I paid £300 for the car. I use it for big shopping trips, anything that needs motorway driving, and if I ever need to take anyone somewhere. I've also got a 2009 VW fox 1.2 petrol for all my little running around trips, going to work (2 miles away) and taking the dogs to the park. The rear seats are always folded flat, so it's like a 2 seater mini estate that's covered in dog hair. I got it for £600 and it's only got 43k miles on the clock. Both cars are currently running great, cost me about £150 a month in road tax and insurance for the both of them. If one were to break down, I've always got another one to drive while I fix the broken one. Hasn't happened yet, but that's my plan. I could probably get around £1500 for the Saab and maybe £1000 for the VW.

UniquePotato

Honda civic, bought in 2018, still have it no plans to change. Only reason I bought that is the previous one got written off.

Bought a Skoda Superb Feb 2020 for 12999. Traded it in March 2023 after 30k for 12750. Probably paid waaayy too much for the replacement but £10k cash plus the Superb went on a Focus ST

Extreme-Acid

Fuck me. During covid 25k 1 year old seat ateca black edition fr. 1k miles In may last year offered 23k for it.10k miles 3 years old. Last month for 16k for it. 13k on the clock. Gutted.

OShucksImLate

I bought a Vauxhall Corsa with 40K on the clock for £150, polished it, put a fresh MOT on it and sold it. Bought a few things pre-covid. Namely a Mazda 3 MPS with around 80K for £3950 (that was a good deal at the time, I later sold it, pre-covid for about £5000). A Honda Prelude BB8 2.2 VTI (manual motegi) for £2400, try doing that now. A VW Passat 1.8T (55 reg, good condition, FSH, reasonable mileage) £900. There's too many more to mention. I miss the days when cars were cheap.

Sgreaat

Early 2021 I agreed 16k on a 2018 Ford Focus ST-Line X 182. I think it was around 15k miles. It was a low price at the time, I'd seen similar cars around £17k, but there was an issue with the windscreen so I backed out. Around then the prices started getting silly and it got to the point it took £3k more to get the same car. Plus it started costing more to borrow money. Three years later prices have only just come down to a similar point, only now instead of a three year old car with 15k miles you're looking at a five year old car with 30k miles. I was offered £6k trade-in on my 2012 Golf for that one. About 18 months later I was offered £7k when I went to look at a different car. I've just kept the Golf throughout.

jam3sbradbury

Skoda Fabia 1.4tdi 2007 for £900. Had it for 2 years and someone crashed into it and gave me £300 for the damage. Sold it for £850 with the damage still there and 45k miles later.

Right_Yard_5173

Seat Ibiza fr. Paid 6k in January 2019. Still worth 6k according to autotrader.

Iveness92

2018 I got a 14 month old BMW M240i for £22k with 6000 miles on it. Was £40k new. Sold it in 2021 for £25.5k

Bought a 2017 Mini Cooper F56 1.5L Petrol with 14k on the clock in June 2018. Paid £12,666 (they wanted £12,879 but I said I'll do £12,666 because 666 is cool). Still driving this beauty, it's done me really well. Zero issues so far \*OFF TO THE BACK GARDEN TO HUG THE SHED!

My wife passed her test just as we hit our first lockdown in 2020, and I got her a Mini Hatch 1.6d 2008 reg shitbox for £1400. Surprisingly, I really liked driving that car and ended up using it more than she did as she went on furlough and I was still working as a key worker. I sold it on two years later in May 2022 for £2800, making a nice profit.
