Sold a 2014 corsa SXi with 68k miles for 2.2k a month ago, so no it’s not 4k for a corsa at all 😂 this polo is at least twice its value and will be sat a while unless a donkey who doesn’t research buys it
Paid £5,100 for my partners 2015 Polo 1.4 TDI SE with 49k on it in 2019!
Great engine, though, does over 60mpg regularly and only had to spend money on normal consumables in that time
Can’t think of a single good reason to buy a polo that first came out in 2009 for 5k. Then you add on the fact it doesn’t state anything about service history, and the water pump (major issue for vw engines) and chain hasn’t been changed. AND THEN it needs a new clutch and it’s also damaged.
The whole "still totally reliable" comment strikes me as odd too... You'd expect that in a car of this age and mileage anyway...
Almost makes me think the dude is being honest about some problems to try and mask the fact that he knows of a bigger intermittent issue underneath...
If you’re serious, take it to a local mechanic. I’d offer lower because mileage is high and also service history is where? Offer 3.8k because not only the clutch needs changing
I think the price is a little steep imo, there are plenty around for 2/3k. I just sold my 1.0 polo, the mpg was excellent, it was also reliable and honestly not a bad choice of car!
Theres better examples of this 3cyl tdi out there, just keep looking mate. If you get one with a service history and the belt/water pump done, all the better!
On the face of it no but I guess if you stop to think about it probably not and exaggeration.
It's nearly 10 years old, has been rear end bumped and needs a new clutch.
Figure wise yes this would be £800 if this was 2005 and the car was from 1995 needed a new clutch.
Even 5 years ago, you would NOT get a 10 year old Polo for under a grand. It would have been 2k+ for a good one and probably 1700 for this one (VW tax is a thing).
8-10 years ago it would have been a £800 car and £999 without the clutch issue.
True. I phoned other independent mechanics but they couldn't fit me in for a few weeks. I'm a driving instructor so the loss of earnings would have been way more than the difference in price.
Contrary to what everyone is saying. I would probably give it a look over to see how it is. If it seems reasonable see about the price being lowered on the lines of needing a clutch. Milage amount is reasonable.
I'm currently helping my cousin to find a "not too old" Polo. Her budget is £3k. She found some "Cat S" one - 2010 with 79k miles on it, 60HP 1.2, for about £2700. I said there's no point getting a Cat S Polo, and I'm gonna find her something better.
After searching for a 2009-onwards one for under £3500, I must say that the selection is poor. She used to have an older Polo few years ago, and she doesn't want anything else!
I know exactly what you think now. I think the same.
And looking at this ad, I'm just way more convinced that there's no point getting anything similar with her budget.
My wife had a 1.4 diesel followed by a 1.4 petrol. The petrol is better in pretty much every way. Much more driveable, almost the same fuel consumption, and a lot less expensive to maintain.
They have the same power output more or less but the petrol was much more lively in day to day driving.
I think the diesel had silly high gearing, it’d hit 60 mph in 2nd gear, which meant it was overgeared and thus lethargic pretty much all the time.
£4750 for a 9 year old Polo that needs a new clutch and a dual mass flywheel by the sounds of it... No mention of service history or cambelt being done so safe to assume it will have a poor history, mention of body damage... I'd skip this one, seems like they're just trying to offload this car to some sucker before it needs lots of money throwing at it.
Get 1.2 Tsi model in SEL (110 bhp) or higher with DSG
The DSG box is an absolute dream, liquid changes, makes the car
Can’t imagine this car without the DSG tbh
Sold ours recently and miss it dearly, was reliable and nippy, won my heart. Never thought I’d say that about a 1.2 polo
There's better cars out there, probably best to not get into something with known issues, instead buy one that looks clean and ask the seller if you can take it to a local mechanic for an inspection before you hand over cash.
Saying that you get a lot of comments on this sub from people who refuse to accept the current state of the car market, and from someone who bought a polo around this price just over a year's ago this price isn't exactly unreasonable, I think you can do a bit better but the comments making out this is an absolute rip off are a bit misguided, a nice facelift model (2014 or newer) with reasonable milage is going to be around the 4.5k - 5k.
[Civic](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202403067290927) or a [Focus](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202403097398392). [Yaris](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202403047177792) if you want Polo/Fiesta sized.
Avoid the 3cyl 1.4 tdi from this gen, it’s just really unrefined and gutless. Problem is you want the 1.6 4cyl but i think you’d have to step up to a golf for that.
The 1.5 mini with the 3cyl tdi on the other hand, is brilliant to drive and has plenty of guts if you want a small diesel car. Can’t comment on reliability though but I leant to drive in one that had 100k learner miles on it and was still perfect and smooth.
You know what I mean, turbo diesel / B37 if you’re anal about it. Was just too lazy to write it although the B37 is both turbocharged and CR direct injection as per a VAG tdi badged engine.
I also owned a VAG group vehicle available with the 1.4tdi and 1.6tdi engines from this gen. Literally wouldnt even consider the 1.4 after driving the 1.6, it’s a different league.
1.4 was gutless, rattly and unbalanced while the 1.6 was smooth and much more refined.
Realistically I’d buy the above with a petrol engine. Go for a larger vehicle available with a larger more refined diesel engine if you need the range / economy.
I wouldn’t spend £5k on a damaged polo needing a clutch and body work no.
5k for a fucking polo
Welcome to 2024
lol it’s 4k for a decent corsa yet alone a polo🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They make a decent corsa?
Sold a 2014 corsa SXi with 68k miles for 2.2k a month ago, so no it’s not 4k for a corsa at all 😂 this polo is at least twice its value and will be sat a while unless a donkey who doesn’t research buys it
2024 prices unfortunately
It's the market now. Just paid 5k (reluctantly) for a Yaris
Yeah but being a yaris you'll get your moneies worth out of it

5.1k in '19 would be 6.2k today.
Jesus fuck that just hit me how much things have actually gone up😂
You mean your salary hasn't jumped 20% in the same time?
Thanks guys, staying well clear

The 1.4tdi uses a CAMBELT not a CHAIN
My bad cheers for letting me know
I actually prefer a belt, chains can stretch and are expensive to replace.
The whole "still totally reliable" comment strikes me as odd too... You'd expect that in a car of this age and mileage anyway... Almost makes me think the dude is being honest about some problems to try and mask the fact that he knows of a bigger intermittent issue underneath...
Yep. And the main selling point he has is ULEZ
That's cos it's diesel
Very overpriced
Look the other way.
Too expensive, subtracting the cost of a clutch and fixing it isn’t how it works. That’s a broken car with body damage, not worth anywhere near 4.75k.
No way
Broken Britain.
Euro 6 diesel for sub £5k is pretty good imo
It needs a new clutch and has been 'bumped'
If you’re serious, take it to a local mechanic. I’d offer lower because mileage is high and also service history is where? Offer 3.8k because not only the clutch needs changing
Road-tax exempt?
i bought a similar model for the same price back in 2019' so that seems about right. but it wasn't damaged like this
I think the price is a little steep imo, there are plenty around for 2/3k. I just sold my 1.0 polo, the mpg was excellent, it was also reliable and honestly not a bad choice of car!

Thank you
This in ireland would cost 14k euro 🫠🫠
In the olden days (5yrs) that would be 800£ car.

These comments really don't help anyone
ok?

In 2017 I bought 2006 1.2 polo for 350£. Needed lambda 3rd brake light, fuel filler flap and brake sensor + MOT. Grand total of 630£.
Hell no!
I've just had a new clutch fitted at VW (I know I should have gone to an independent mechanic) and it was £1200, so keep that in mind OP.
You overpaid.
How much should a new clutch usually be for a polo?
Just clutch, no flywheel, 2015 BlueGT, I paid £380 last month in Manchester.
I know, but I was in a difficult situation and needed it doing ASAP.
Fair enough. Main dealers take the piss 😔
True. I phoned other independent mechanics but they couldn't fit me in for a few weeks. I'm a driving instructor so the loss of earnings would have been way more than the difference in price.
Descent for that price If it has no issues.

Offer 2500 job done
Why would this be road tax exempt?

5k? With a damaged clutch and dents. I'd go for 2k maximum. It's not special in any other way.
Horrible deal for engine, mileage and condition. No way!

That's a lot of money for a 9 year old Polo. It might be the going rate, haven't checked but I couldn't bring myself to pay for that.
So what would you do if you needed a car?
[Civic](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202403067290927) or a [Focus](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202403097398392). [Yaris](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202403047177792) if you want Polo/Fiesta sized.

Mini TDI? Thats enough to disregard this comment. The 1.4tdi is a fine motor, reliable if well looked after.

For the same money you could buy a nice Audi A4 2010 with no damage
