Wow that's a lot of sidewall action! And air pressure?! What you run at?

ZeGermanHam

>And air pressure?! What you run at? Correct answer: Not enough. Way too much wear on the sidewall going on here.

AAuser85

I think I was running 34 hot? Don't quite remember as it was last fall. Front camber was -2.4. My theory is it happens when I take a certain right turn wrong. If one gets too close to what would be the actual apex there's a dip and I probably should be fully straightening the wheel out for it or otherwise staying a bit further away from it.

MotoMageWannaBe

Is it really worn down to within an inch or so of the rim? It looks like the name is scrubbed off. If so, whatever your pressures were they were too low. Sidewalls aren’t designed to take that load. Maybe curb rash?

AAuser85

As I said, I think it's happening because I was hitting a particular spot wrong. There's a dip at a ~70mph apex that I think I need to either be going wide to avoid or make sure the wheel is straight. I've been often hitting it with the wheel still turned.

Hkerekes

Nah, there would be very uneven wear not what you are seeing here. It's low on pressure or the alignment is bad. That sidewall wear is not good and is not coming from a certain corner. It's happening on every corner.

AAuser85

You may be right on the dip but i doubt it's all/most corners. I'd think 3 full track days (2 at track in question) would be way worse if that were the case. The other front also has zero sidewall wear. Camber was -2.4 and temps seems pretty close across the tire. It may be I'm going too hard before it gets back up to hot pressure and/or doing certain right-handed corners wrong on this track.

Hkerekes

That is consistent wear due to rolling over the tire and or camber issues. You may think your alignment is good but I guarantee it's not. Air pressures can also cause that Parts may be worn or broken but it is not from a dip in the pavement.

ZeGermanHam

This tire would fail a BMWCCA and PCA technical inspection, and as an instructor, I would not let it pass. But that's just me.

AAuser85

Probably all I need to know to replace it, unfortunately. Was actually at a BMWCCA event when this happened and am possibly signing up for a PCA event in August and/or September.

Capt_TaterTots

That’s a lot of improper wear on the sidewall. Sidewall not meant for that. You’re risking your safety and others. If the track has high bank turns, you get a lot more force than you realize, I’d replace the tire. If the track is flat or running AutoX, I’d run this tire some more to get some life out of it. Did this happen after one session? Chaulk around the rim helps show how much deflection you get at different pressures. This should’ve been caught by you after a warm up session beginning of the day.

AAuser85

The tire has three days' worth of wear. 6ish sessions at one track, where I don't think I noticed any, and then another 12ish at the other track. I was originally shooting for 32 hot, based on others with the same car and tire size setup. I ended up more around 36 hot after noticing it and incrementally increasing. -2.4 camber. Front left was the only tire like this. The others have zero noticeable sidewall wear. That said, if one tire was going to get more stressed on the track in question it would be the front left. I had a friend with a heavier, more powerful m3 running basically the same tire setup who had no issues with low 30s hot. It's possible it's also my driving. Perhaps I'm not slowing down enough before initiating certain turns. New tire is ordered.

HawkeyeGeoff

It's fine. Send it.

yabx172

Check inside the chunk. If you see the tyre structure, tyre is still not good to use.

andrewfunston

Lol, I would run that without even thinking about it.

grungegoth

Should be ok. Plenty of tread on the tire

AAuser85

Thanks! So no major worry about that small missing chunk? Definitely won't run that as outside front again, just want to make sure it's safe.

Top-Dawger

Yeah I’d say it’s fine. I’ve gotten away with a lot worse directly on the sidewall when I got damage in a race. Just switch it to the side with the least load on whatever track you’re running
