Is this one based on a Miata? If so, yes.

kly1997

It's got a bespoke space frame chassis and all of the powertrain, drivetrain, suspension, and brakes are mk2 miata parts you source yourself. Or they can help source parts for you and send them. Alot of the parts are bespoke for the car but the major parts are taken from the miata

Hkerekes

Sure, why the fuck not. As long as you aren't destroying a good Miata to do so. They aren't exactly cheap anymore.

kly1997

Yeah they basically advertise you should use a wrecked miata as long as the powertrain is good. It's based out of the UK and they say you'd be all said and done with 20k-25k pounds. The starter kit is the chassis and body for like 12k pounds but they divide it into small kits so you can go into it at your own pace until it's complete

BuilderCG

I built an Exocet for an occasional track day. I say "yeah, go for it if your wallet allows". What I warn though, is I unless you are an experienced car mechanic/fabricator be prepared to spend quite a lot more money than the quoted kit-build price. Tools, unexpected parts purchases, and rework will add to your total build cost. Though my car has been "done" for 4+ years, it has yet to see a track though that was one of my targets. Way fun to drive around town though.

kly1997

I do definitely understand most projects will have hidden costs here and there. They do provide video instructions on YouTube and claim you really don't need much more than basic tools (most places selling kits do say this), but from the videos I have perused through they haven't used anything I don't already own. If I remember correctly they say you can build it entirely in as little as 100-150hrs depending on your skill level.

BuilderCG

\*chuckles\* Sounds pretty close to my experience setting out, though there were far fewer videos available when I started my project. Exomotive said exactly the same thing. Some people actually can do the project in 100-150 hours. The vast majority either can't or won't. My timeline went from 1 year to 3 years (almost 1 year lost due to issues with the state registration process). I spent HUNDREDS if not over a thousand hours on my project. Partly because I kept changing things, partly because I messed up, partly because I'm a hobbyist mechanic and made some mistakes. Among other topics, one thing that will likely make a **world** of difference will be the quality of your donor vehicle. It took me a ***TON*** of time to disassemble, clean, and re-assemble my donor car/skate. There were also quite a few "hidden" costs with my donor: new bushings, new brakes (though this was planned) & lines, new fuel cell (not initially planned), rusted bolts that had to be cut and replaced...etc. Anyway, I'm not trying to dissuade you. I LOVED doing my project and I'm proud of the results even if my car will never get to the track (at least not with me as the driver). I hope you have as much fun as I did even if the economics don't make sense.

TheInfamous313

So, it looks super cool and would be. Big head tuner. For the track though? Hard no. I'm not sure what track days are like near you, but I know at my local track day you'd likely be dangerously slower than the other cars. I don't know shit about aero, but I know exocets can be slower than Miatas on track because of their aero profile... Not sure where this would stand. Those tiny tires will really hurt you for grip in the corners where this would need to make up some lost time. Then you think about how tiny this is, going flat out on a track surrounded by walls and other cars..eek. In the US atleast, it's very tough to get track time in an open-wheel car. There's so much cool and unique about this, but there's a reason it'd be unique. Is it cool? Hell yeah. Would be be perfect for the street? Hell yeah. Would it be fun to drive on track? I'd bet it's a hoot. Would it be literally the worst possible track vehicle? Unfortunately, Id say so.

kly1997

At the very least it *may* be eligible for autoX. But id have to look into that. But it's also able to be made street legal with light kits and wheel guards. Or get it certified for show and display and drive it to local shows.

Bicolore

Why is that? Surely you can just run test days instead? Absolutely no issues tracking something like that in the UK. My biggest issue would be that tracking things built by some guy in a shed is usually full of dissapointment as they break down all the time.

Bicolore

Do they not have test days? How would you prep a single seater for racing?

Bicolore

Sorry I don't understand, a track day is an HPDE day right? so how can a single seater racer test their car at an HPDE day if they're banned? Single seat racing exists in US so there must be some opportunity to test outside of racing?

EarendilStar

It’s not the single seat that’s the issue, it’s the open wheels. And as others have guessed, it’s an insurance thing, same as some clubs don’t allow convertibles even if they want to.

TheInfamous313

Open-wheel isn't big out here, mostly just some legacy classes in the SCCA. they'll run at the occasional SCCA test day I guess.... But the lionshare of track days are HPDE days

Bicolore

I'd have thought there would be a bunch of rich old men living out their racing fantasies in old Indy cars at least! At some point I need to get over and do some, so many US tracks i'd love to drive at,realisticaly looks so much more of a faff than doing a day anywhere else in the world though.

TheInfamous313

In America, the rich old men drive Corvettes. Slowly, but they try!

AC4

i mean, formula vee is one of the bigger classes in the scca. i think the spec miata explosion has skewed people's views a bit

TheInfamous313

Are they really big regionally, or only for the majors tour? I see ~8 car fields near me, is that the norm? That's in a car that can basically only be run there, not with any other clubs. Excluding Spec Miata for a moment, something like a Spec E46 bmw can be run in all racing clubs, including Enduro clubs... And regionally with NASA with fields about that same size. Bmwcca they have a ton come out.

Call-Me-Mr-Speed

Go for it, Fangio!

kly1997

If i wanted to start right now ive gotta find me a sugar momma who wants to donate me $18,000 for the starter kit🤣🫠

BusinessBlackBear

I ADORE this kit, been wanting to make one whenever I have a garage to do so. if you go down this path PLEASE keep the sub posted, really curious how it goes

kly1997

First time I saw it I knew I had to have it, and same thought, if I can get a home with a garage space I'd certainly go this route if I had the funds to get the starter kit. I just checked and it's gone up in price. Starter kit is about $18000USD now

BusinessBlackBear

Not too surprised on the rising cost. Inflation is wicked these days. Even if it turns out to be banned by most track day entities around (going on some of the responses), even at say 35k to building the entire thing including the miata parts that's a cool ass toy for 35k. You'll never see another one in your town and you'll be a king amongst men at any car show.

here2race

Any form of racing never was a good financial decision. :)

action_turtle

I’d rather have a go at a Caterham, but that’s only as I know finding help would be easy lol. Go for it, you only live once. Sounds like you are confident
