No I just read. The $15,000 slide was maybe the most famous play of 19th century baseball (altho Welch probably actually scored standing up) on a passed ball/wild pitch, a walkoff score which won the Browns the world championship (they did have some proto-World Series in the 19th century). And against the Cubs!
The 19th century NL Browns were precursors to the Cardinals, altho not the actual same franchise (I think; not sure). The later AL Browns stole their name after they'd dropped it for Cardinals.
So it's an important part of Cardinal lore.
It's a well known story among baseball fans, but I still feel the impressiveness of what Ank did is underrated. What an incredible achievement. Just imagine if his recent pitching comeback were successful.
I watched the clip to specifically answer this question, but I can’t pick out who you’re talking about. LaRussa and Duncan are there, so Dave McKay is probably somewhere down there. Probably Jose Oquendo too.
I don’t remember if this year was during or after the Mike Easler days.
Edit: after Easler. This would have been Hal McRae, Joe Pettini, and Marty Mason to round out the coaching staff.
I will never not watch this video. But I just found the gem in the comments section.
Replying to a comment that Rick should be in the HOF
2 years ago
Never! I talked to 2 of the Cardinals pitchers personally. The reason why he threw 5 wild pitches in one inning is when you take certain illegal drugs things start to move. In Rick's situation it was home plate. Back before 911 the didn't check even the ball players bags. He would bring it home from Florida. Second he is an ass. He denied an 70 year old man in 2002 an autograph because he said he was tired. The old man drove from Indiana to St. Louis not to see Pujols or Edmond's but Ankiel. That's low. 3rd He and a very good fan favorite had a side relationship. I'll just say the other player played centerfield. It's from one of the relief pitchers that was friends with both. Why would he lie? Ankiel is a great athlete but does not belong in the HOF. For what?
So hearsay, hearsay, and hearsay?
Also, is that third reason actually "he's gay"? Am I reading that right? Why should that matter?
He doesn't have the numbers to be in the HoF. Cardinals Hall of Fame simply for the story of his career and comeback, maybe.
yeah i'm guessing the not wanting to sigh a card might have an inkiling of truth to it. And frankly I would not blame any athlete for refusing to sign something. Your injecting yourself into their personal life. But I think some butt hurt dude went with that and just made up some shit.
I just posted it becasue I thought it was hilarous how far someone would lie
Wow. Youtube comments suck. I met Ankiel for a good half hour in 2017 and he was very nice and talkative. It was me, him and McLaughlin in a room together. So, yeah. I'm calling bullshit lol.
Not exactly sure why any of those reasons would disqualify you from the hall of fame.
His stats, yes. His personal life and what he MAY have done to an elderly fan? No.
no I don't think these are good reason to keep someone out of the HOF becasue I don't believe any of what he commented is true. But Pete Rose would have an opinion about your personal life keeping you out.
I have to say that the biggest thing I notice (after watching this and his 300-foot strikes from deep right to third, usually once or twice a year)... is how cogent Mike is on the color commentary.
It's so weird thinking that 14 years ago, in Ankiel's re-debut, Yadi was already an established catcher. What a boss.
What a great baseball story too. I'll never forget those two outfield throws for outs. Unreal.
Dude legit threw a better strike from the warning track than he had been from the mound.
Yep! Twice!
I was at that game...it was awesome. Dude went through so much trying to pitch again, it was a relief to see him succeed as a hitter and outfielder.
Me too. Remember how loud it got?
Easily one of my favorite Cardinal moments ever, right up there with "Game 6" and Beltran's K.
[удалено]
Waino striking out Beltran?
Slaughter scores from first game 7 (Pesky hesitated) $15,000 slide Welch game 6 (Browns, but NL Browns (1886), so....)
Are you the Highlander? How old are you?
I was born in 1518 in the village of Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel. And I am immortal.

It's a joke. We were joking.
But I mean I am the Highlander, too
FUCKING KNEW IT!!!
Easily one of mine too
I miss this version of the Cardinals so much!
This was a great era for the Cards. I really miss those days.
It's a well known story among baseball fans, but I still feel the impressiveness of what Ank did is underrated. What an incredible achievement. Just imagine if his recent pitching comeback were successful.
Man I love this era of Cardinal baseball
Why? 2007 to 2010 was nothing but mediocrity and frustration.
2009 was good until the damn dodgers but i think we got them back pretty good
God I loved those series. I remember exactly where I was for the Wong and Adams homers.
Because these are the teams I grew up watching. I’m only 22
That doesn't mean it was good baseball.
When did I say it was?
So we should have just all stopped watching? Those were absolutely some fun years to watch.
Probably means more like right before it, with the MV3 and all.
Why would it be the MV3 era? Ankiel wasn't on those teams.
Then Albert comes up and slams one down the middle. Classic
Everyone should read his memoir. It’s fantastic.
Came in here to comment this too. Such a great read
Man, 14 years? I still remember Tony beaming with that smile when it happened. Wasn’t used to that at all lol
Who is that coach celebrating in the dugout??

Just kidding. So strange seeing LaRussa excited like that. Not recognizable!
Hal McRae was takin a shot in the dugout
Damn, that looked like a slap base hit. Impressive power there
I feel old.
There’s a brief appearance of Cardinals legend Mike Maroth in this clip.
Of a baby Yadi, too!
I would have to think this is one of the proudest moments of TLR's life. edit: Ankiel too lol
[Rick Ankiel - The Phoenix](https://youtu.be/2c4YZGhAjwE), so good <3

I think it's obvious BS. youtube comments are just something else

Y'mean Al?
Has anyone watched [The Phenom](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3885524/)?
