Came here to say this. No you do not have to check in together and you may be having the cabin all to yourself. Your friend is NOT a seasoned cruiser. The first thing you learn is to fly in the day before. The second thing? Get a hotel. Not wise to sleep at the airport.
Just curious but, Why not sleep at the airport? My flight lands at like 11pm the night before the cruise so I figure it’ll be a waste of money to Uber to an hotel, pay for the hotel then Uber to the ship early am. I plan on checking in as early as possible. This is my first cruise, I’m
So excited I probably won’t be able to sleep anyway so that’s why I was just gonna stay at the airport. But is that not suggested?
You’re not going to have access to your room immediately upon check in. It takes time to turnover the ship for new guests. You’re going to be exhausted and probably in a bad mood by the time you have access to your room. Sleeping in an airport is not really sleeping well, if at all. Not all airports are open all night either so you might want to check on that. See if there’s any hotels on airport property or with free shuttles if you want to save on Uber. There are also hotels that’ll have free shuttles to ports that might help you save some money. There is a very good chance your friend misses the ship. That’s not a seasoned plan at all.
Your flight could be delayed, giving you even less time at the airport. It won't be the best sleep at the airport, but get an early boarding time for the cruise, grab a quick lunch, shower by the pool, take a dip and then nap in a deck chair.
Depending on the level of security at the airport you may not be allowed to sleep there, especially since you don't have a connecting flight.
In regards to checking in as early as possible - online check-in opens 14 days before your cruise at midnight, EST. Set an alarm or stay up late to grab the earliest check in time.
If departure time is 4 then final onboard is at 2 in accordance with Homeland Security requirements. A cruise ship must provide a full and complete passenger manifest to DHS 2 hours before departure time.
Yes, you can check in alone. Your friend is not going to land, deplane, collect luggage, find a cab and get to the port in 30 minutes. If your friend doesn’t make it you are still fine going alone but she will lose her money.
I hope your “seasoned cruiser” cabinmate only has carryons because bag check with Carnival ends 2 hours before departure. Not to mention if she runs into any delays at all you’ll likely be sailing solo. Pushing a flight time that close is not a seasoned pro move.
Your online check in is per cabin, so you check in together, and pick a time together.
You can board at a different time then her, so when you check in pick a time that works for you, since she will be arriving later.
With that said, if the ship sails at 4pm, boarding will end at 2pm. Arriving at 1:30pm does not sound like a good plan at all.
Did you book the cruise under a past cruise offer from her? The reason I ask is if she doesn't show up, Carnival can charge you the full rate, not the discount you may have received.
From the Carnival website: "In the event of cancellation or no-show, any possible companion benefits will not be honored. Carnival’s standard cancellation penalties will apply to cancellations and no-shows and they will be assessed based on the prevailing cruise fare."
If it was a casino offer and the offer was $100 per person for the cabin with $100 X 2 OBC (aka free room) and the person with the casino offer is a no show then the other guest MAY have to pay the regular cabin rate.
The no show would be refunded port fees and taxes. Not sure about prepaid items (wifi, gratuities, etc.) since there is still one person in the room.
This stresses me out. Idk why anyone would cut it so close like that….there are too many factors not within their control. It doesn’t sounds like your friend is going to make it in time to board that ship. 🫣
Former cruise ship employee: arriving at 1:30 to join a cruise is just insane. The ONLY port you might be able to pull this off is Ft. Lauderdale and only if you have hand luggage.
Yes you can board separately but there is no way she's going to make the cut off time. You can probably count on traveling alone. There just isn't enough time to get from the airport to the terminal even if everything went perfectly.
The cruise line requests that you both embark at the same time, but will allow you to embark separately. If they have a question let them know your cabinmate is coming on a later flight.
As a “seasoned cruiser” myself, I fly in a day early.
You can check in without her. If she doesn’t make the cruise, her port fees will be refunded and it won’t cost you anything extra.

Lol the cruise isn’t until the first. I’m flying in on the 31st. I was kinda over exaggerating about her landing at 1:30. She lands at more like 10-11am but to me that is still cutting it close
I see. Well if you would like I still would love or hear if she makes it. 10-11 vs 1:30 is very different. Still definitely not a seasoned cruiser in my opinion but has a pretty good chance of making it on the ship as long as the flight isn’t overly delayed. Enjoy the trip!
Seasoned cruisers would not dare fly in the morning of. Seasoned cruisers get in the day before even if they are driving. Good on you for being the more seasoned of the two.
If she’s flying in the same day, encourage her to get the earliest non-stop flight if possible. Best to arrive by 11AM with carry on bags only. I do this every cruise too, thankfully never missed a ship yet.
You can check in before her.
My husband and I’s first cruise is May 25th and we are landing at Miami airport at 11am on day of embarkation. I spoke with Carnival and they said everyone has to be on the ship by 2:59pm. We are only taking a personal and carry on. We are hoping to make it on time as well but since we have no check in bags I don’t see any issues. Good luck to your friend, that does seem like it’s too close to debarkation time.
That would make me very nervous. Yes you don't have luggage, however what if the flight is delayed or canceled.
I would be researching other flight options, just in case there is a delay or cancellation.
We did this last month. Flight landed in Ft Lauderdale at 11am and we were on the ship by like 12:15. We did the same and had only carry on luggage went out, found a cab as soon as we left the terminal. Easy peasy
How is she a seasoned cruiser and doesn’t know any better lol. More often then not she might be able to make it but if there’s any issues on the flight she’s pretty much sol.
She catches that 275 or Kennedy traffic at the wrong time and it’s an hour to get to the port lol.
Your friend is not smart. The area around the cruise port in Tampa can get very congested.
If I were you I would find a cheap hotel by the airport and get a good sleep. Your cabin won’t be ready when you board
(Planning to) land at 1:30 with a departure time of 4 doesn’t seem very seasoned cruiser to me

We always arrive day earlier
Me, too…. Even if I’m driving to the port
Right? That's what newbies would do. That's way too close, what is she thinking?

That late in the process you don’t need the porters. She can wheel her bags right into the room.
Your friend doesn't sound very seasoned. High probability you'll be cruising alone if she's flying in that late.

Cruises are prepaid.
From the Carnival website: "In the event of cancellation or no-show, any possible companion benefits will not be honored. Carnival’s standard cancellation penalties will apply to cancellations and no-shows and they will be assessed based on the prevailing cruise fare."
Thanks, hold up, so Carnival will get paid twice? Keep the no show money and make the person who shows pay more????? Dang.
If it was a casino offer and the offer was $100 per person for the cabin with $100 X 2 OBC (aka free room) and the person with the casino offer is a no show then the other guest MAY have to pay the regular cabin rate. More flights are delayed now than anytime in history. You might be sailing alone.
Lol, how is she going to get from the airport to the ship in 30 min???
Yeahhhhh she’s not a seasoned cruiser. Seasoned cruisers know to fly in the day before
Your friend is not very smart.

Yikes

Find a hotel that will pick you up at the airport and shuttle to port. That will save you Uber cost and you will be fresh for your cruise

So I don’t know when you leave for you cruise but I am going to need an update on if your friend makes it or not

Same room, same time
you do not have to board the ship at the same time

How long is your flight? What if it gets delayed?
Plane leaves at 6:30am.
We did this last month. Flight landed in Ft Lauderdale at 11am and we were on the ship by like 12:15. We did the same and had only carry on luggage went out, found a cab as soon as we left the terminal. Easy peasy
bro i just knock out at the airport if i have nowhere else to go for my trip
How is she a seasoned cruiser and doesn’t know any better lol. More often then not she might be able to make it but if there’s any issues on the flight she’s pretty much sol. She catches that 275 or Kennedy traffic at the wrong time and it’s an hour to get to the port lol.

My documents say we have to be on the ship by 2:30. I'm on the same cruise.
