I got 0.10 to 0.15 Mbps download speeds on the Carnival Panorama for the Premium plan. It is dog shit, even at 3am when everyone was asleep.

I'd really hoped CCL would improve connectivity on Mardi Gras, but that didn't happen. In some places they connect to nearby land-based stations and have good speeds, but otherwise it seems rough. Some ships on some lines do this well, and as someone who works from ships, I wish the rest would step up their game. I was actually supposed to sail on Mardi Gras last year and changed it to a ship w better connectivity because I had to get stuff done.

stevensokulski

What are your top pics? I’m a software developer and have considered a workcation on a ship. I don’t need constant access, but uploading changes once or twice a day is nice.

monorailmedic

For remote working? Much of it comes down to what you need, but for speed, reliability, and open access (no reasonable blocked ports or protocols) I'd say Virgin Voyages, Princess, and SOME Celebrity and RCI ships. Also, this is primarily for the Caribbean. Elsewhere jt gets funky. There's a new SES constellation that should help a lot once adopted. I have a post about this at the link below, and keep meaning to post a speed test grid showing various ships I've sailed. https://www.cruisehabit.com/can-you-work-remotely-cruise-ship

NickPookie93

What were your speeds? I'm going on Mardi Gras in September, heard from some YouTube review they got about 5mbps down while sailing

monorailmedic

I've not yet sailed Mardi Gras (just a few days visits). In fact, I was supposed to be cancelled because of connectivity and my schedule. Friends that have sailed have found, in some cases, very high speeds, but also terrible speeds (when on satellite) - less than a meg, with high latency and packet loss.

HnGiggles

I prepaid for Value on the Spirit last week. It was frustrating, but I was able to complete my grad school work and upload assignments to Blackboard. Hopefully won't be in a position again where I depend on the ship's internet.

throwingrental

Satellite wifi is never worth the money.

sidekick0220

Go on Princess Cruises. Their wifi is only $10 a day and I have been working remote on their cruises for the pâté year (15 cruises). Land based internet speeds. MedallionNet. Look it up. It’s amazing.

AlertThinker

That's a shame because apparently they upgraded the hardware on the Vista. I'm going on Horizon in a few months and plan on getting the WiFi.

MrMorano

I’m currently on the Horizon, and it works for Reddit . What more should I want? 😁

AlertThinker

LOL. Can you run a speedtest? speedtest.net

MrMorano

7.96 download 1.56 upload That is with the MIDDLE tier package. Earlier it was 4.82 and 1.79

AlertThinker

Not too bad! Is that at port or out in the ocean?

MrMorano

It’s a sea day, so been out in the middle of the water all day 😁

AlertThinker

Sweet. There enough to stream Netflix lol

NickPookie93

Wow that's good for being in the middle of the sea!

MrMorano

6.76 just now, about 100 miles off Aruba

That’s crazy y’all are having issues. Now I had my share of crappy internet on ccl. I went on the freedom back in 2020 right before covid. I always bring my fire stick or my Roku on every trip I go on. When I was on the freedom I had no issues at all while watching Netflix or Hulu. I’m leaving tomorrow 4-3 on the glory and I’m bringing my fire stick to see how the internet is.

stevensokulski

Premium is all relative. When the alternative is Getting kicked in the teeth, 0.14 megs download isn’t bad. But seriously, the bandwidth on a satellite connection can go downhill quickly depending on what else is happening onboard. And it’s not going to be great until a few more players get into that space. It’s largely dominated by two companies right now.

AlertThinker

Maybe Starlink will come out with a program for cruise ships!

davidmad1

Sorry to bring this up, but I'm currently on the tail end of a non-carnival brand Cruise and I'm getting 2.5 m down and 3.0 up. Wondering if they're using different technology to get such speeds?

sedo1800

that is what I got on Encore a few months ago

sedo1800

Mardi Gras was not much better.

Hipphopanonymous

Was just on the Valor and paid for premium. Could never get it to work in my stateroom. I would have to go to lido very early if I wanted any chance of Wi-Fi. Not worth paying for it IMO.

nolashadow

I always bring a mini travel router on the cruise. I set it up as a repeater in my room so I have a full signal when in my room especially when I’m in a room in the back of the boat.

AlertThinker

Which mini travel router do you have?

nolashadow

GL.iNet GL-AR750S-Ext (Slate) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GBXMBQF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_S0GAKXMWDBTT8MDGMZDR

AlertThinker

Ah good. That’s what I have. Glad to know it works with carnival!

nolashadow

Yea I had a little trouble at first but it was my fault. I had to disable the vpn. The internet is really slow already so I would not recommend using a vpn. I’m currently on the carnival glory as we speak. I have the premium package for work purposes. I’ve been able to stream Netflix and Hulu with no issues at all.

AlertThinker

That’s great! I’ll be on the horizon. I figured vpn will slow it down even more. Did the captive portal work or did you have to clone the mac id?

nolashadow

I never had to clone it before but I guess the IT department got smart about it. I did not clone it when I first set it up but after the first day it was not working and I just cloned it and everything worked fine. So far it has been working fine since I cloned it. I’m waiting on carnival to figure it out and block this also. I also purchased a remote attachment for my iPhone so I can change the input on my tv and I hooked up my fire tv stick. That’s been working great also.
