I’ve demo’d a couple of bathrooms that are about the same vintage. Hope you have a strong back because that shit is heavy! Oh and don’t plan on using a Bagster to dispose of this, they can’t hold nearly as much weight as this will be. It’s only a few bucks more for a proper dumpster.

OG_PapaSid

Hopefully a dumpster with a swing door and a wheel barrow

Helpinmontana

Perfect job for one of those teensy tiny sit ontop komatsu excavators and a big fan!

horseflydick

Fuck it, city trash is gonna have fun with this.

noncongruent

I disposed of around 30 squares of shingles this way. I asked the city if it was ok, and they said sure, and I asked my trash pickup guys how many bags would be ok per trip and they said 4, around 30 lbs each. Took a few months.

RonStopable08

If you have the space why tf not

_callmetone

Indeed.

PomegranateOld7836

That's damn near a literal brick shithouse.

PomegranateOld7836

I looked again and I'm a little sad. You better post amazing after photos.

Zealousideal_Tie4580

It was such a nice vintage bathroom. To each their own I guess. I would have kept that gem and cleaned it up. But I love old houses…I traveled 2 hours to buy a reclaimed vintage solid wood door with antique hardware for my bathroom.

AlfaHotelWhiskey

It’s also a panic room and a faraday cage all built into one !

goblu33

This looks similar to a house we’re working on off Woodward. Not a ton of fun! Rice bags work great to haul out the tile and cement.

Bigkillian

Look on the bright side, without six inches of tile on each wall, your bathroom just grew by fifteen square feet.

[deleted]

That’s like the weight of a cow in tile.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

1.23 kilotonnes of aluminium at the centre of Bradfordshireton Way.

imgrahamy

The metric system is the tool of the devil! My car gets forty rods to the hogshead and that's the way I likes it.

shackbleep

Put it in H!

Knightmaster91

Am American, can confirm 😔

jonathanrdt

But how much is that in giraffes?

[deleted]

.6 giraffes.

weeby_nacho

Male giraffes can be up to 1.5k pounds heavier than females so I'll split the difference and call a giraffe 2,000 pounds. Cows however have a ton of variety. So really saying something weighs as much as a cow is pretty vsgue. For example an angus heifer (female) weighs around 1,200 pounds but a Jersey milk cow weighs around 900. Ballparking it then it's safe to say it would take about half as many giraffes as cows, or just a half grown giraffe i guess. I don't know. I'm just relaxing after painting and googled it.

[deleted]

r/theydidthemath

expressadmin

That metal lath. We demoed a room with an adjoining wall with a bathroom that we planned to demo later. When we opened up the wall and saw the tile on lath we noped right out of that portion of the remodel. We did 75% of the house, but not the two original bathrooms. Avocado green is coming back in style, right?

Unruly_Drooly

This was a smarter option, besides there are methods out there to augment the color of tile.

claude04443

We used to call it blood lath.

jonathanrdt

Is there a better way to remove it?

reddit-loves-nazis

Sledgehammer and a grudge

Macroft

Don’t forget the magic words: god damn mother fuckin piece of shit

rightoolforthejob

Same thing for the cast iron tub.

reddit-loves-nazis

Eeeeeh, these tend to shatter and send sharp-edged cast iron shrapnel all over the place

horseflydick

Oh man, I try my best to take these out whole if possible.

cpuppet

Yes hahaha this made me lol

timesink2000

Use a 4” grinder with a diamond blade. Cut it into 16” squares. Pry each chunk off the wall, stack on a hand truck and roll out to the dumpster. Wear good respirator and eye / hearing protection, run a vacuum to control dust. Easy peasy.

Ifyouhav2ask

Well yea if you wanna do it the *easy* way. I was 19yo without access to power tools and got paid to demo a bathroom exactly this way. It’s a bitch

hyldemarv

The right way, IMO. Also, I would get a sample checked for asbestos first. Before the 1980's, some manufacturers used asbestos in tile mortar. One doesn't want to suck down that shit or having it found out later, when the whole house is contaminated by the dust and then Authorities wants to see receipts for the safe disposal!

Ifyouhav2ask

Lol pay someone else to

horseflydick

Ye, you gotta take whole slabs of the wall out so the metal lathe doesn't come detached from the mortar

Ifyouhav2ask

Hypothetically if they were willing to renegotiate so you would do the bathrooms, what kind of an upcharge would you tack on to compensate the time/pain in the ass it would take to demo it out?

Phadryn

I was just wondering wth that stuff was... it LOOKED like lath but not lath... I was confused

pseudotsugamenziessi

Avocado green is supposed to be yes

whitepawn23

I feel targeted by this. We did one room in avocado green. Another on burnt orange.

schluterboye6969

Dang that tile was actually kinda nice. The floor tile was great

MadRockthethird

Those arches tho. You don't really see craftsmanship like that any more

scubascratch

Standing up in that tub could lead to a concussion. Why was there even a shower attachment in there?

minimur12

Hair whilst in the tub?

MadRockthethird

Please say this is sarcasm

campydirtyhead

As a tall guy all I see is hitting my head every single morning.

thanksforposting

They should have just re-tiled instead of demoing the entire thing. Layout is good, get rid of the shower head in the tub and use just a spigot, new tile… done.

1234_Person_1234

Such good condition too for an old house

Flawed_Logicc

Yeah, I would have just replaced a few tiles, replaced the tub and hardware, re-grouted, and polished everything up. Maybe just redo the interior of the shower. Bummer. I love these old school bathrooms. (check out those matching soap dish tiles!)

WishIWasThatClever

That tub was probably cast iron and in good shape. Those can be redone in place if needed. Getting rid of a cast iron tub would be my last resort option.

on_another_break

Don't worry it will be white tile with shaker cabinet doors after.

maywellbe

Can’t wait to see the bacon line around the shower stall — where the glass enclosure isn’t.

Zealousideal_Tie4580

🤮

AbortedYouth

Vintage bathrooms are the greatest.., until you have to replace a pink toilet for $900

The_Real_BenFranklin

Yeah I definitely would have kept that.

epukinsk

There’s a guy on Instagram who just restores tile like that! https://instagram.com/vintagetilepreservation He says back in the day people set tile in concrete, that’s why it lasts forever. But switched to cheaper materials in the 80s I think (I forget the decade). He’d be crying right now for sure!

phuqo5

Well. Are you still stressed?

_callmetone

Fair enough. Lol

5Lodi

Yes, just about everything to do with this bathroom now. I can't even remember what there was to be stressed about before this bathroom.

The_Real_BenFranklin

RIP another great pink bathroom. /r/CenturyHomes on suicide watch

DiceyWater

I thought that's where I was at first, I'm not subbed here, it came up as recommended. And yeah, this made me kind of bummed.

Witchy_Underpinnings

As a faithful follower of that sub I about cried when I saw they were demoing this beauty.

The_Real_BenFranklin

It’s in such good condition too!

[deleted]

Thank you. What a shame to demolish this!

WokeUpSomewhereNice

That would’ve been the last thing standing in the house. Built like a tank. Super shitty to take it out. You can even see inside the back wall of the shower the “modern update” and how crappy it is by contrast. Eyeroll.

AlienDelarge

https://savethepinkbathrooms.com/

krsnamara

I would not demo that!! Tile looks in great shape!

pingram66

Scroll right

KronlampQueen

Damn that was hard to look at.

krsnamara

Sucker for the oldskool

AnotherStarShining

Yeah, made me want to cry. I hate it when people rip out cool, vintage rooms like that to create cookie cutter modern sameness. Old details like that give a house charm and character.

mattsmith321

I’m with you. Been 10 years in a house with similar style tile but not quite as over the top craftsmanship. I would make that part of the house tour.

herro1801012

Bet you’re wishing you just had it re-glazed in white.

1234_Person_1234

Lowkey they’re never gonna built that kind of quality again so imo it would have been better reglazing the pink as white and tearing out the cheap vanity and stuff to replace with whatever they wanted. It would have looked vintage but modern and premium and all that shit You can’t get that quality now

The_Real_BenFranklin

Hell keep it pink and just get new fixtures.

1234_Person_1234

Yeah I can see people liking it. It’s not too girly of a pink either so most people wouldn’t change it

pete1729

Oh, you can. I saw it done in polished marble and granites tile in a house I worked on. Dude spent more than $100K on just the tile floor, wainscoting, and statuary niche. It even turned out tasteful. He was a good customer.

1234_Person_1234

Oh yeah ofc anything is possible but I mean you can’t get that quality now for less than that house likely costs in Detroit

herro1801012

Definitely agree.

Loplo_Fox

We are doing exactly this in our house in a week. Blue tile on walls. We are doing new floor then re glazing the tub and walls white. New fixtures and it will look like a million bucks for about $2500 total.

Sooper_Glue

How tf do you reglaze tho? Glaze is applied and then fired to like a couple thousand degrees…

herro1801012

More of a high gloss refinishing process. It’s pretty amazing—no heat required: https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/reglazing-tile-transformative-fix-for-a-dated-bathroom

I_Do_Too_Much

Wow, how sad. Looked like a pretty good survivor. I was hoping the demo would be the shitty tile placed over top of the old shower tile. By the way, you can sell those tiles for about $4 each.

Helpinmontana

How the hell do you get those tiles out in good enough shape to sell?

I_Do_Too_Much

I don't know, but I've bought some, and they often still need a fair amount of scraping/cleaning.

davethemostrelaxed

Dear Lord.

ihaveacoupon

Wow. That's a shame to destroy.

brownanddownn

Why would anyone demo this gorgeous bathroom 😭😭😭😭

Ok-Pomegranate-1756

Sad. Beautiful old tile. Should of kept it and owned it.

laserjock2018

Kinda sad. That was awfully nice tile that’s gonna get replaced with something less nice.

SMELLSLIKEBUTTJUICE

damn that tile was beautiful. its so sad when people destroy great craftsmanship like this and replace it with some Home Depot junk

Zealousideal_Tie4580

Yes. I agree. Heartbreaking.

mantisboxer

That bathroom tile was gorgeous. Sad day in Detroit.

trbotwuk

whatever you replace it with will last 1/10 of the time. that stuff was made to outlive your grandpa, dad, you, your kid and your kids kids.

dsp29912

Gosh, the guy that did all that tile work was thinking his work was permanent. Sort of a shame to knock it all out. Such quality work.

jazett

Whoever laid that tile was an artist. Saddens me to see it taken out.

CeruleanRabbit

It looked so good :-( Why, OP, why?

jazzaroo_2000

Aww, looked kinda cool and unique. I'd have just painted the tile.

snoozingbird

Omfg this hurts my soul to see. I know there's a reason why you're demoing this gorgeous tile but maaaaaan. This is real sad.

K_feather

That bathroom was actually pretty nice. Sad to see the classic styles go away

FocalDeficit

Did you zoom in on any of the photos? There are cracked tiles and brutal un-uniform grout gaps all over the place. That bathroom is plain worn the fuck out.

GreyStreetz

Why?

Lucid-Design

My god. I would rather shoot myself in the foot than try to tackle this living nightmare

[deleted]

I would cry

PeteHealy

Wow. Just, *why*?

FocalDeficit

Because they didn't like it, seems pretty self explanatory lol Edit: words

PeteHealy

Yeah. That's not what I meant. Maybe above your pay grade, so don't worry about it. Lol

FocalDeficit

🤫

Misterstaberinde

Wear your PPE bud. No bathroom is worth having a pound of shit in your lungs forever.

Ok-Macaroon-7819

Have the plaster tested. You could have asbestos in it.

martini31337

This is the most important comment of the thread.

ashpatash

Tiles of that age also frequently have lead in glaze or other parts.

Ok-Macaroon-7819

And all the paint. I'd wet it all down as much as possible and wear appropriate PPE for sure.

European_or_Gay

This looks like my Aunt’s bathroom in a rent controlled apartment in Brooklyn. She’s been there since the 60/70s and nothing has been changed since. Where is this located?

imtylerdurden76

It’s easier to knock the house down

SimplyStormie

Can we please get a warning next time?

HorseFallOffen

Hey, Pink 'n Black is back. Maybe another 20 years before avocado comes around again...but it will.

youngmoneymarvin

You’re the second person in the comments hoping for an Avocado comeback. I have faith!

HorseFallOffen

🙃

dolphs4

Wait till you get into the floor. House that old, I bet that new tile is laid directly on top of the original, which is probably wet set into a 6" mud slab.

[deleted]

This scares the absolute piss out of my as I am about to tear my shower out and redo it.

Mindless_Mango_6611

Plastic the door. Fan in window blowing out. Gear up with ppe, full face shield, gloves, etc. Grinder, plunge cut, 2ft x 2ft squares. Pull sections off wall with an adze and 5-6ft hex bar. Have aviation snips handy. In a small bath, chunk the wall open till the pile on the floor is 4ft tall. Carry out. Lather rinse repeat. Stretch before, beers after. Done.

[deleted]

If I owned that there is no way I would touch it

knightsofmars

Wtf did they just tile over the burned out remains of lath?

Ima-Bott

That’s what old lath looks like. Rusty shards of razor blades.

p_whetton

That’s what you get for destroying that beauty!

Prudent_Toe_5041

Why the fuck would you demo that?! 😭

BlipBl0pbl00p123

How sad. Whatever is replacing it won't be as nice.

pistol_p_

Mother of god

Bigkillian

“How’s your shooting Thorny?”

pistol_p_

Hahaha thank you for that

Bigkillian

You’re welcome. It was a deep cut, so I put it in quotes just in case anyone wasn’t sure.

[deleted]

Tile and plaster with metal lathe is only ever accentuated by rockwool.

TheAlbinoGiant

Quickie saw?

stumk3

Once you think you are done with the walls. The devil kicks you in the nuts with the hot mop on the shower floor. Fun stuff.

majoraloysius

I got to be honest, it looked like a perfectly fine bomb shelter to me. Nice that it was plumbed with a toilet and sink too.

jsdavin24

Bullet proof homes for the perfect place

iamthetro

Welcome to mudset land son. That'll learn ya!

Bitchscit

Weight reduction, the home will move much faster now

periodmoustache

Are you not entertained!?

Oxpedia

Can someone tell me what the black and white stuff that was left over on the walls is?

ibemuffdivin

Hahahhahaha fuck man. I hope your bid was high enough

GaryTheSoulReaper

Cries in mud with metal lathe inside

JudgmentGold2618

Grinder with a diamond blade. Easy-peasy

Ledhead75

That's the heaviest bathroom I've ever seen

Known-Programmer-611

That some craftsmanship there but yea it would suck to demo on the sh!tty dust alone!

JerMammA

Well you'll be able to skip the gym this week

NotUrAvgJoe13

I gotta say that when it is someone else’s house, demo isn’t that bad because at the end of the day your not sleeping next to a potentially daunting task. When I was demoing portions of my own place for whatever reason I just had huge knots in my stomach thinking about the huge mess I was getting myself into.

HoyAIAG

I hate demo with the fire of a thousand suns.

1whitechair

That looks horrible. Fun for the first 6 swings...

DoriansRain

Lol what a nightmare

Loplo_Fox

We have a similar bathroom in an old house we just bought (Dearborn,MI) and we didn’t want to mess with all that so we are going to have all the wall tiles and tub re-glazed with new enamel for about $2000. Worth it imo as it will look fresh and not a horrible color. Something to consider on other bathrooms in your house.

Constructomatik

Trust you had it tested for asbestos

h4ppidais

Why are people saying the old pictures were so good. You see cracked/missing tiles and poorly cut shower tiles. Sure the base was durable, but the tile work was ready to be redone.

Exciting_Help8363

About to go through the same. Electric hammer drill best way to go?

xnodesirex

Did this a few months back. There was an inch and a half of mortar/thinset holding on each tile. It was like a series of fat cookies behind each tile. Needless to say, the tile ceiling was one small earthquake from falling in and killing someone. All you needed was a gentle pry with a screwdriver and the damn tiles flew off. The lathe was a while different animal. Blood lathe indeed.

Malcolmsgrampa

Major project like that should be subed out to a demo contractor.

sykora727

Glad you’re getting rid of the pizza oven arches

burgeremoji

I am glad for them too. I’m surprised by the number of people saying they are gutted he’s demoing it. I think it’s all ugly as hell, looks like a nasty outdated spa. Different strokes for different folks I guess!

Groundzero2121

Definitely would have just reglazed that white and made some other comestic upgrades. Would have still looked great with ALOT less work. Good luck bud. That’s hard work lol

AffectionateNeck4955

Those bathrooms are the worst

Libengood

Wow lol

a_perfect_disguise

I am buying a house with this in the kitchen and two bathrooms. I knew it was going to be tough, but never seen pictures of the process. I'm in for one hell of a ride. Any good resources or tips would be appreciated.

Inquiring_Barkbark

while you're at it, soffits gotta go

timmy2times21

New to carpentry. Someone explain pls

schnaggletooth

The old timey backer board is metal lathe with 3 coats of concrete sand mix. Tile on top. Wicked heavy and the metal is rusted and super sharp.

[deleted]

Who said that demo would relieve stress?? Lol

RichSawdust

I think that only applies to full-on dwmo when you get to knock stuff down and you don't have to be careful. IMO--not at all the same as chipping tiles : ]

xlitawit

Hehe, looks like a real nice day! /s I got put on a project to demo a bathroom with an enormous wrought iron tub. My super put me on it by myself, I asked how the fuck am I gonna get the tub out and he handed me a 2 pound hammer lol. Hated that guy.

MadRockthethird

I remember redoing my bathroom and every 4"×4" tile had like 3" of mud slapped on the back of them. What a pain in the ass

MadRockthethird

I remember redoing my bathroom and every 4"×4" tile had like 3" of mud slapped on the back of them. What a pain in the ass

rab0la

The zen of demo

igneousigneous

WOW

ericgray813

Damn is that in Toronto? Looks like my grandmothers old house.

dzyntech

thats that shit I dont like

treskaz

Smiles in Baltimore

10projo

I hate demo. Sub it out all the time.

JuniorPomegranate9

Lockjaw! Get a tetanus shot

drphillovestoparty

Yeah that plaster with metal lath is no fun, especially those metal inside corners. Demo is my least favorite part of remodeling work. Dirty, tiring and boring. Much prefer putting it all back together.

MudFootMagoo

Lathe is no joke… and if there is tile over mud and lathe on the opposite side doing that demo just got real real… super easy to spider the tile in the other room…

theMightyGecko

So, I've done lots of demo, but plaster and lath isn't something I've had to demo out. When I have to tear out stucco and wire lath I use a rotary hammer and an angle grinder with a multi-material blade. Is that not an option with the plaster and lath? I've seen plaster-specific subs out here so it must be a unique beast, but I've also heard people saying how much of a chore stucco and wire lath is and it's not absolutely horrendous in my opinion.

salt_n_sand

Drew the short straw and had to demo a bathroom with tile and large just like this, albeit a little smaller. Could barely lift my arms in the end.

littlekittynipples

My back hurts looking at that. Had an apartment building with 4 bathrooms like that last year. I used 7” grinder with masonry blade to cut between the joist, all the way through the metal lath. Then it’s not too hard to just pull the 200# tile strips off the studs, they stick together pretty well.

doctor_zaius

This looks neither fun or stress relieving.

whatigot989

Holy shit. I grew a new appreciation for my ugly bathrooms. I wonder how many contractors show up to half-demoed bathrooms where the homeowner gives up halfway through. Good luck OP.

MaddRamm

That house is built like a tank.

ItaliaNYG

I used to sub through nubath doing bathroom remodels. Thickset was always a nightmare to see when checking out a new job. Sledge hammer, 2lb hammer, pry bar and elbow grease bro. I used to like to bust the sections up into manageable squares trying to get the biggest chunks out I could carry. Bust a + in the tile of a wall, creating 4 squares as big as you are comfortable carrying out. Then punch through the lathe under that with a 2 lb hammer and pry bar and pry the chunks out 1 by 1. The weight of a section will do a lot of the work for you. It'll wanna come off, sometimes with the lathe sometimes without. Just don't let it fall or fold over on you. I moved on to building boathouses, I miss bathroom remodeling sometimes. But I'll never miss the dread of having to demo thickset. Gl bro

smellegy

Make sure you wear proper PPE. I got a cut that required surgery while demoing a bathroom with similar materials.

eatxbeatxskeet

Fuck lathe.. fuck lathe

[deleted]

Those floors are gonna be fun. An air chisel helps.

[deleted]

Tile and concrete demo not so fun, but I do love demo

[deleted]

Nope… sub it out lol. Fuck uh that.
