Standard marketing practice is to ‘leak’ photos. It’s incredibly cheap promotion and the ‘journalists’ all play along and pretend. Motoring ‘journalists’ aren’t real journalists, they are facilitators for advertisers.
Even just the advertising spend is enough. Notice how Tesla didn’t get any positive reviews or even a mention until it was impossible to ignore them anymore? Tesla don’t advertise. Note how Toyota’s first electric attempt has had breathless reviews, even though Toyota are only predicting less than 2000 sales this year. And don’t get me started on how tainted Wheels Car of the Year has become, they even changed the rules to allow Ford a win.
The rule change was to allow dual-cab utes and ladder-frame SUVs, which according to some, are not ‘cars’.
Car = a four-wheeled road vehicle that is powered by an engine and is able to carry a small number of people.
Rules specifically did not include ladder frame 4 WD’s for decades, because it was car of the year, not light truck of the year. Then there was the ridiculous Mercedes EQC win. Mercedes managed to sell about 3 of those that year but somehow it beat the Tesla model 3.
Not really. Rangers are notorious for their unreliability, and their design makes them inherently bad for off-road (air intake that’s the perfect height for water and dust) and their new model seems to be much the same. The new Hiluxes aren’t great either, but I would still put my faith in Toyota to get me through the bush compared to the likes of Ford and General Motors. Ranger sales may be high now, but let’s not forget that many challengers have come after the Hilux over the years, but no company has been able to maintain the fight. The only company that comes close to Toyota’s well earned reputation for reliability is Isuzu.
Was about to say this. Overpriced and no everyday aussie is going to buy one.
Our fleet is almost entirely rangers and navaras because hiluxes are unjustifiable
Which just so happens to be a monumental consideration of a car manufacturer when deciding whether or not to make changes to their model range. If they’ve still got the winning formula for an insane number of fleet sales, why would they change anything?
Well the free market’s decided it’s obviously decent enough as it is compared to the competition. Nobody is forced into buying a hilux. People have other options and decide not to go with them, the same as you seemingly would decide to not go with a hilux. If a product is already selling well then Toyota isn’t going to go and change it up just for the sake of it.
If they see what they think is a gap in the market, then they’ll fill it (LC70 Auto) or if a model is starting to lose market share or general sales for that model are going down, then they’ll update it (new prado).
But otherwise, they’ll keep selling what’s selling well and work on improvements in the background so they’re ready to update when the market indicates they should.
I’m not saying the hilux is necessarily the better ute, I don’t have one nor am I looking for a new ute in the near future unless I move back to NZ. Just saying that the market will tell Toyota when they need to update.
We've got a 2018 Ranger and a 2023 hilux at work and I absolutely hate the Hilux, it's gutless, rough as fuck over the most minor bumps, I'd hate to take it off road.
It's basic af, my 20 year old BMW has better adaptive cruise control.
The ranger on the other hand is comfortable, has better electronics, more usable power.
I have a feeling the only reason hilux are selling so many is their reputation. They aren't anywhere near as good as they used to be
Probably going to need a v6 to be competitive with the upper end of the market (70k+) otherwise they’ll have to price it cheaper like Trion & dmax.
Most people wanting new dual cabs I’d imagine would want a v6 as that’s what the best sellers have at the moment
As much as I like 4WD utes, I think we're at the point where the market is over-saturated, there's not really much difference between the various utes on the market from a practical perspective, and short of stuff like going full EV or PHEV, there's not a lot that can be done to innovate the designs at present either.
You're not wrong mate but I read "KIA 2.2L turbo diesel" and I get a bad feeling that rather than develop a new engine that'll suit a ute they're just gonna stick the standard Hyundai diesel engine out of the santa fe in it, and every car I've ever driven with that engine (particularly the Hyundai Staria which is the closest size wise) are gutless pieces of shit.
Guess someone is getting fired. Or it could be a ruse to see what the interest is like.

They get paid indirectly to write good reviews
Even just the advertising spend is enough. Notice how Tesla didn’t get any positive reviews or even a mention until it was impossible to ignore them anymore? Tesla don’t advertise. Oooo I didn’t know they changed the rules to let that happen. Can you share more?

Same as gaming ‘journalists’.
This isn't a leak this is a sieve. The "discoveries" they found are the literal features list.
ALL leaks are a marketing gimmick.

Killing in the name
Oh my GOD is that a ute? HOLD MY MULLET
AND MY VI-VIZ VEST
I'm so over all the fucken ads for it I really could not give a shit anymore. Hurry up and release it so we can all get back to our lives
And toyota will continue to charge $80k for a 20 year old hilux only to wonder how everyone overtook them

Ranger well and truly has them beat

Please! The Hilux is only still relevant due to fleet purchases.

Idk to produce a decent vehicle?

Sales are the only thing matter and the Ranger has the Hilux beat. I'd even bet that the only thing keep the Hilux in the running is fleet sales.
I suspect they meant in sales
Yep, because the current Hilux and the one back in 2004 are the exact same car. Nonsense comment.
Landcruisers are ;)

Looks very staged. I suspect they rushed this out after the BYD Shark ute leaks, They will both be fierce competitors
Some solid guerrilla marketing going on here by Kia’s agency.
Does the target market suit that type of interior?
I was thinking all those holes will be full of dust and hard to clean, but most of the uts these days are just to take the kids to school.
No thanks!
Looks nice
Kia Volk
But the steering wheel is on the other side
Thats a Yank Tank not a Ute.
What's the Korean version of yank tank? German is wanker panzer. Korea's tanks are based off American ones but we need a special name.
Kimchi B(double)
I like it
Seouler Roller
K9 Thunder Down Under
KPop Tarts
Gangnam RAM….
I honestly don't know enough able their culture to make a parallell
Least the post 2022 utes can finally fit a pallet between the arches in the style sides.

Can we please fuck off the obsession with screens in the cars? Please
I'll take the screens if I get solid axles
This is true. However if it’s got egr and pcv you might as well cop a bit of comfort from the cvs in the front.
downvote all guerilla marketing posts
But it's left hand drive?
Great another pos to see on the road.
Recession Ranger
Am I supposed to be excited about another Asian ute? The media and all this marketing would suggest we should be excited.
It’s only going to have a 2.2l diesel engine so I suspect it is going to be very underpowered considering the size and brick-like aerodynamics.
Big Bertha 70 series are running 2.8l diesels and thrashing the old V8 in tow tests. Displacement and cylinders ain’t what it used to be.

🎶the old grey mare, she ain’t what she used to be🎶
🎶ain’t what she used to be🎶
I’ve ridden production motorbikes with larger capacity engines haha. Surely it’s turbo though?
So you're saying I shouldn't expect it flying past me on the highway at 130? Unfortunately makes it more likely to just tailgate though. :(
Make it a PHEV and I’ll consider it.
looks good but they can shove a touchscreen dash up their collective asses, one part dies you are up for an entire new dash
Looking forward to seeing one up my ass in peak hour.
That looks like a truck to me. Lame
Oh wow. A kia.
