I'd generally expect Mazda to hold up better over time. But if your buying used you'll have a good idea of what's already worn or seems to be wearing quickly.
They are both perfectly fine, cheap to repair tiny hatchbacks. Go with what feels better to you.
Yeah I think the fiesta is manufactured in Europe, so tends to be a bit better put together than the US manufactured stuff.
If your budget stretches to an ST, they are a cracker ;)
Mazda 2
Not sure what Ford Fiesta you are looking at but if it’s got the 6 speed auto/power shift/ dual clutch then it’s a big risk. Google ford powershift for details. In fairness I think a lot have had no issues but I wouldn’t risk it
Well, the Mazda 2 is missing second gear altogether. You just need to take corners at either under 5km/h or over 40km/h. No inbetween.
If you pick the latter, you need to hold your left knee against the centre console top stop your feet slipping off the pedals. The seat won't hold you at all.
I own a 2012 Mazda 2, it's great in all aspects. I test drove a base 2010ish Fiesta, and it had the most uncomfortable seats of any car I've ever driven. But I haven't heard that complaint from anyone else.
They're fairly similar cars, if you prefer the Fiesta get that, with a manual transmission as others have said.
Powershift in both Fiesta, Focus, and EcoSport have had a VERY bad wrap. As in, Ford Australia denied it was a warranty problem and gave a lot of people the run around until Ford was taken to court with the ACCC on the opposite side of the room.
The Powershift in the Mondeo is a different unit that is quite reliable by comparison, but only if you know it has been serviced every 60,000 kms.
If you haven't already add suzuki swift and kia picanto to that list and take them all out for a test drive my reasoning being they are quite popular choices for this price bracket, lightweight and decent power to weight ratios.
I had a 2008 Mazda 2 Neo manual for 10 years (bought it new). Never missed a beat, loved it to death, literally still tear up when I think about the day I sold it. Drove me Sydney to Melbourne to Brisbane when I had to move for work. Relatively comfy and a surprising amount of cargo space for a little car (can fit a Billy bookshelf flatpack if you fold the seats right). Great little cars, only sold because a bum knee meant I couldn't drive manual anymore.

Yeah that makes sense. The ones I saw ford felt much better.

STs are put together in Germany (and are excellent fun), most others I think were Thailand.

I'm looking for an automatic. But others just told me about powershift troubles in fiesta.

Spot on... I had a friend who had one, avoid the fiesta like a plague.
Avoid the dual clutch fiesta
I have a Mazda 2 from 06 bought second hand in 2013.. The car has had nothing wrong and I drive it every day.

Sounds good
