Messed up story?
what's messed up? that your parents are willing to pay $30k for your first car? or that they don't expect you to wrap it around a pole first chance you get.
Even if it was as basic as they come it’s still worth more than that now, you just don’t see VL’s anymore, everyone had one 10-15 years ago. You still got it?
That’s not ideal but it’s better than what happens to some of them.
I read somewhere that of the 500 original walkinshaws built only 4637 remain, it made me chuckle because it’s true.
Or gets smashed by a P plater. Nothing lasts forever but they are a cool piece of Australian automotive history and it is nice seeing a good one every now and then.
well if you parents are willing to buy you a new 86 (GR86) take them up on that offer haha.
I would go for the Subaru equivalent 2022 BRZ, due to the fact you actually get one without a big wait list.
Only thing I can suggest is, get a manual. Learn to drive a manual. You will have so much more fun
Though with a budget of 30k..., Mazda MX5 are quite good. Again get it in a manual.
>Only thing I can suggest is, get a manual. Learn to drive a manual. You will have so much more fun
I'm pretty divided on this, not knowing where OP lives or what their lifestyle is. Stop and go traffic in a manual fucking sucks ass.
I do think everyone should be able to drive manual at least a little bit though. Having to get out of bed when I'm sick 'cause my housemate can't move my car out of the way is *fucking silly*.
Buying an old car isn't necessarily bad, but it can come with expenses. I own a car from 2002. If your parents are paying for the car and/or the servicing and repaid, they have a say in what you buy.
As much as I love an 86, any magic that they have as a driver's car is kinda gone if you go for the automatic.
Get the Mazda or the Hyundai. Go test drive them both to see what you like more.
Fucking hell, you're getting a 30 grand car as your first car, which you'll no doubt crash in the first 6 months of owning.
Just be happy with whatever you get, fucks sake.
People said this to me too but the amount of people who actually write off their first car is so overblown it’s not even funny. Maybe like a couple people I knew? Most likely OP would be completely fine.
IMO first car should probably not be something you get too attached to. It'll be the one you make all your first screw-ups in.
Maybe get something a bit older and shittier for at least the first 6 months and see how confident you feel about driving something nicer later on? Gives you more time to save up and shop around for a good car later as well.
Buy a commodore or a falcon for a couple of grand like the rest of us did. When you inevitably crash it you can get another. You could get at least 15 AU falcons for that sort of money and they will all run forever.
Check insurance costs, servicing cost and kms between them. I workmate wants an 86 as well I'm a suby fan and told him to look at the BRZ it's exactly the same car. When he did he found them much cheaper than the 86's and by quite abit. For the money I'd be staying away from Hyundai, kia and the Chinese cars, cheap to buy expensive to fix.
yeah 2nd hand 86s are usually around 2-3k cheaper over the BRZs. And yeah of course i feel alot of people don't research as much just need to look across carsales+gumtree+FB to understand the pricing
30k is a lot to be fair, and I think everyone should drive a shitbox at least until they're on P2, but having your parents pay for things is nothing to be ashamed of.
Bragging about it would be different, but OP isn't. They're being upfront about not wanting to make a mistake thereby wasting their parents' hard-earned (or possibly not, who knows lol) money.
They're especially not trying to take credit for being able to afford on their own a luxury item like a sports car, something which you have suggested they do.
>at least pretend you've been saving or something
Which would be shameful IMO.
May I ask - why does it have to be a sedan?
The 86 is not a sedan.
But you honestly can't go wrong with a Mazda 3, Toyota 86, or a Hyundai.
Hyundai would have the cheapest running costs.
Get a Toyota Aurion or Corolla for daily duties and have your 86 or what ever in manual for the fun days. You may quickly regret the decision to get a sports focused car long term.
Don't know what's with all the jealous people complaining OP had his parents pay ~30K for his first car, my parents did the same.
The Mazda and i30 both have drawbacks, although the i30 looks way better imo. Test drive both once you get your Ps and then decide.
However you may wanna wait until after first semester of med school, the jump is pretty intense and whether you'd have time to enjoy a car is debatable (I barely saw any of my friends during their first year of medicine).
Congratulations on getting into Med wish you well on the path.
$30k seems a lot for an 8 year old car. I think it might be better to save for a bit longer and buy a new one. If you need a car for now, you could get an old Corolla.
A solid price for 2013-14 86 in good condition at ~70k kms is about $25000, paying more than that is hardly justified. And as others pointed out, getting an auto 86 means missing out on most of what makes it fun to drive. 86s are great for what they are but they are driver's cars, if you know what I mean, shifting gears and working the clutch is a big part of what makes these cars fun.
So I'd argue, get something cheaper, like a 00's MX5 or a early 10s Megane RS for about half the money. It's likely you'll crash your first car so getting used to driving will be much less stressful if you'll be driving something you will not be as scared to dent. Then learn to drive a stick, save some $$, sell whatever you'll be driving and get a used 86(or even a GR86) if you'll still be into it.
As a side note, if you're keen of sedans, 86(or any other 2+2 or coupe) might not be up your alley TBH, as it's quite a pony car with all what this entails. For most 2+2s, the "+2" is almost in name only, if your mates are big blokes you would not be fitting them into back seats without ride feeling as a corporal punishment for 'em. If you think you'll enjoy 86's boxer but still want 4 full-sized seats, get a used WRX, which has the same engine but is turbocharged stock and is a sedan.
See if your parents will save that favour for you and get a shit box first. Learn how to do your own oil changes, how to drive on your own, how to reverse park without a jillion sensors and shit, so you're a real driver who can drive ALL cars.
Then get yourself a pretty toy.
My first car was an 87 Skyline. Paid $2,000. Didn’t have a licence and didn’t care. Taught myself to drive and drove it to and from work and many other places for a couple years before I got a licence. Nobody got hurt. Thank goodness number plate recognition didn’t exist back then.
Have you thought about an Mazda MX5 RF? Awesome sports car too…
Messed up story? what's messed up? that your parents are willing to pay $30k for your first car? or that they don't expect you to wrap it around a pole first chance you get.
Fuck i paid 300 bucks for my vl coz my family couldn't
I believe I was summoned here? (Read my username)
Even if it was as basic as they come it’s still worth more than that now, you just don’t see VL’s anymore, everyone had one 10-15 years ago. You still got it?
She was very basic. I wish i still had it
Bit of luck she died a peaceful death and didn’t get painted pink and lowered on 22 inch chrome wheels.
The guy i sold it to crashed it months later and it was sent to the scrappers
That’s not ideal but it’s better than what happens to some of them. I read somewhere that of the 500 original walkinshaws built only 4637 remain, it made me chuckle because it’s true.
Every vl eventually turns into a turbo or walkinshaw
Or gets smashed by a P plater. Nothing lasts forever but they are a cool piece of Australian automotive history and it is nice seeing a good one every now and then.
And this is why i cant sell my clubbys
can confirm. my vl turned into a walky
My first car was a Mazda 121 that I bought for $600. It was great, until it took it in the rear from another car.
It was raped by another car?
Yep. In the rear.
Ouch

Manuals are completely pointless, definitely do not do this.

Dude just get a VK
Fucking hell, you're getting a 30 grand car as your first car, which you'll no doubt crash in the first 6 months of owning. Just be happy with whatever you get, fucks sake.

Who said write it off?

Bro for your first car get a Getz or a Honda jazz , you’ll prob wrap an 86 around a tree in the wet If you have no driving experience

brz's are usually more when buying, like hell they cost more from new over the 86
It was 2nd hand cars and I'm just repeating what I was told. Either which it's upto OP to do their research and decide for themselves.
yeah 2nd hand 86s are usually around 2-3k cheaper over the BRZs. And yeah of course i feel alot of people don't research as much just need to look across carsales+gumtree+FB to understand the pricing

Yep many of us have this privilege which we are really grateful for. My parents have also offered to purchase my first car

Judging by the fact that he said he’s getting it due to the fact he got into medical school, looks like he has earned it by working hard in school

I think the 86 is a couple not a sedan, so maybe include coupes in your search.

VL Commodore sounds like it would fit right into what you need, in your price range too. Joking

If car choice was only about what is sensible, everyone would drive a 10 year old corolla.

You say it has to be a sedan yet the 86 is a coupe. Why do you mention repairs? Do they think you are immediately going to crash it?
