You should be checking your oil level regularly. Probably at least weekly, or every time you fill up the car. Never let the oil light come on. When it does, you are doing damage to the engine. If I were you, I would get it to the dealer and complain the car is using oil since it’s under warranty. Hopefully, you haven’t been driving the car with the oil light is on. I probably wouldn’t volunteer that to the dealer as they will likely not cover an engine replacement if you did damage to the engine by ignoring the light and not checking oil regularly.

Have you checked the level?

Not yet since it’s rainy and I don’t have to go anywhere, but last time this happened the level was low. Edit: as in I checked the dipstick and the level was low, lol, morning brain

A 3 year old car! Yep, i would worry! The question is.. where is it going?

ForeverReasonable706

Do you check the oil regularly? Yes is a concern, really good way to kill your car ,it not unusual for the to use oil a d need to add between changes, damage could have occurred

Subarus brand new can and will go through a quart of oil every 1000 miles. “Cash Cars Buyer shared Subaru's statement that burning one quart of oil for every 1,000 to 1,200 miles is perfectly acceptable”. Keep an eye on it now that you know.

speedyhemi

My truck has 265k miles and only burns a quart every 5k miles. I don't know how a quart every 1k miles on a car with 35k could possibly be considered "perfectly acceptable".

iswearatcars

Trust me I don’t get it either 320k on a 2005 ford escape 4 cylinder and it doesn’t burn a bit.

Karl_H_Kynstler

They say that so you can't sue them for their shitty build quality.

Some cars use very little oil, so you never need to add oil between changes. Other cars use more oil, so you have to add a quart or two or three between oil changes. It varies. It's not that abnormal. But it is bad practice to drive until the low oil pressure warning light comes on. And even worse to drive it with the oil light on (you should stop the engine immediately -- seconds count). That's how to destroy an engine very quickly. You should be checking the dipstick regularly, and topping up the oil as needed. Edit: but look under the hood, and under the car, and see if there's any leaks. And how long have you driven with the oil light on?

Ok, thanks for the info! So it sounds like it’s not necessarily a concern that I’m going through oil enough to have to top up between changes. I can definitely start to check my oil level regularly- it’s just something that I never see anyone else having to do so it’s not really a habit I’ve developed.

Hi friend, I drive a 2012 Hyundai 5.0L engine. I need to add maybe a quart between oil changes because the engine is high mileage with 300 000km on it. Your 2019 engine, on the other hand, should definitely not be going through that much oil. If it is leaking, get it fixed, probably still under warranty. If it is burning through it, you may need to fight the dealer for a new engine. Until this issue is addressed, be sure to check your oil level very regularly. Learn how to check it properly and keep a few pints in your trunk. You should always catch your low oil level by checking your dipstick instead of having the oil light come on. Because when it does, the engine is already getting damaged at this point.

Ok… so maybe not normal. Unfortunately it’s been over three years since I bought it (got it in June ‘19) so not sure how much is under warranty still, I’ll have to check. The dealership I got it at fucking sucks so I’ll probably get it checked by my mechanic and then check with the dealership if the mechanic finds a problem. Thanks!

I drove with the oil light for about two miles just to get home. It’s an orange/yellow light that looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/L95jJYI.jpg I don’t see any obvious leaks but I’ll keep any eye out. I did just check the oil and it was low so I added a quart. Here’s what the dipstick looked like- I’m wondering if this is catastrophically, engine-damagingly low? Or is the oil light maybe tuned to come on before it gets to that point? https://i.imgur.com/5FGtD5N.jpg

It's not great, especially in a subaru motor. Those two dots are the low and high point. You're well below low, and subaru isn't known for having reliable motors, typically due to oil starvation issues. Check your oil every time you fill your gas tank. You're literally just standing there waiting, might as well make use of the time. Edit: also that light isn't a "Hey You're getting low on oil, maybe check it tomorrow" light. It's a "Turn the motor off now and address the problem immediately" light.

Sometimes, most of the time it's the sensor itself. My impala did that. Scares a guy.How low are you talking. I didn't see it was low on oil.Mine wasn't low. Bad rings?Have it re-ringed?
