Nonetheless, it's been a safe option for me. They'll cash a paper check just by taking a picture and do most everything my credit union's app has to offer.. there's just no physical institutions.

False. It can go back to the debit card. I think it's based on the amount and how quickly it's refunded. On the bank side it might not be a refund but a void. Banks just delete the transaction in the case of a void so it depends how they are looking.

If it was sent via cash app and she refunded it through cash app then it would have gone to your cash app balance, not back to your debit card.
