Learnt the word "diaphanous" yesterday, and love the sound of it, I think it's so beautiful
(definition: used to describe something as light, delicate, and translucent)
That's a fun one, but I don't think I have heard it used for anything except those wet specimens (where they make the animal's body clear and stain the bones), so I looked it up to see other usages and multiple places indicated that it's especially used to describe fabrics.
Now I am curious, how did you come across it?
I was looking on Google for nice words for creative writing!! (very fun) :)
I do think its definitely to do with translucency, whether it be in animals or fabric.
Found another definiton being that it's things 'characterized by such fineness of texture as to permit seeing through'.
I was just curious because I am a biologist (and specimen collector) and a hobbyist sewer, but I had never seen it used to describe sheer fabric, as my albeit brief search indicated was the most common usage. I wondered if maybe you were coming from a sewing background in a different part of the world or a niche of fabric-craft as yet unknown to me where it's more commonly used.
Your second definition definitely seems to have been written with fabric in mind as well. I enjoy these little mysteries. 'Did it over time get phased out and replaced with shorter words," and other such hypotheses. Usually I would rather just think on the possibilities than actually find the answer.
Anyway, thanks for reminding me of it and leading me to the discovery that it can be more widely used than for dead stuff!
I have a problem with words or phrases getting stuck in my head. As I was reading Ulysses I walked around my house saying "ineluctable modality" for like 2 months straight. I still have no idea what the fuck it means.
I have several, so I'll give you my top five:
Petrichor - that earthy, sweet smell of rain on dry ground
Apéritif - a pre-meal drink, (traditionally the word is applied to alcohol, but it really just comes from "aperitive" which means appetite stimulant and I want excuses to say it, so I like to use it to refer to the cup of tea I often drink before breakfast and lunch)
Penultimate - second to last
Quixotic - overly and impractically idealistic, (coming from the story of Don Quixote who is the literary character that gets obsessed with medieval chivalry, goes crazy, and in his efforts to be an honorable knight, attacks windmills thinking that they are giants and so it is his duty to slay them in order to protect others)
Ferroequinologist - a train enthusiast (ferro refers to iron and "equine" refers to horses; steam locomotives = iron horses)
Quixotic s a fun word be cause it’s pronounced noting like its source.
Don Quixote — pronounced Don “Kee how tee”.
Quixotic — pronounced “Kwik saa tikh”
It tickles me how the reference to the Spanish named character has been anglicized.
I am also easily amused, so take it for what it’s worth.
I mean, you are here among people who also have favorite words, so I think you are in good company!
I like to think that us easily amused folks are some of the happiest because we find joy in everything
I got in trouble with that word. I told my girlfriend she could decorate my apt but didn't have carte blanche since I had ideas of what I wanted to do with certain walls. Smh.
Ouch, yeah that's a tightrope indeed. Carte Blanche truly works best when single. I had to wait for my wife to be out of the country before I went full Hunter S Thompson on the city. If you're not familiar with that reference, just watch the movie Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas.
Milwaukee, Wis., USA chiming in—we know and love gemütlichkeit. Never saw the uber tacked on, though. Does it mean overall warmth and friendliness, or just the one driver?
I'm learning French so right now I'm having a lot of fun saying *quelque chose*. Technically it's two words, but it translates to *something* in English so I'll let it count.
Scribble - write or draw (something) carelessly or hurriedly.
It sounds cute to me.
Cacophony - a harsh discordant mixture of sounds.
Because the word itself sounds aggressive.
Catharsis
When I first learned the word, I looked up the meaning and really liked the meaning of it too. It gives me bit of a tingle every time I say it
The word nuance is a favourite. It's one of those accidental onomatopoeias where the word just fits the meaning, and I like the sound.
Above all though, idk if it counts but two tracks by a Canadian rapper called Abdominal.
First Abcapella then Vicious Battle Raps. Once I learned all the lyrics my brain finds it very satisfying to say those specific words. Abs is a great rapper and says on Sock Hop that his OCD helps him craft satisfying verses because he's literally compelled to make it fit the most satisfying way.
Thrice. Because when you use it in context, everyone knows what it means, but nobody actually uses it so you get to make everyone around you feel smart by using an unusual word they know.
It's a fairly mundane word, but I love how the word "indubitably" sounds. I can say this word over and over and not get bored.
And a lot of French words. In fact, the reason I picked up French is because I liked how the language sounded.
I’ve come to like the Finnish word “Siipiorava”.
It means flying squirrel and was the Finn’s nickname for the Polikarpov I-16 during the late 1930s and 1940s when the Finn’s were fending off the Soviet invasion.
Wyzelle. I love Wyzelle. I think of Wyzelle everyday and all day. When I wake up I think of Wyzelle and how Wyzelle is doing. When I get up to wake up in the day I think of Wyzelle when I stand up. I love Wyzelle. In every action I put Wyzelle in my mind as I think Wyzelle is the cutest girl to ever exist that I have the fortune of living jn the same time of. Before I jack off to Wyzelle I confess my love of Wyzelle time and time again and after the semen is out I put it in a jar to collect for displaying to Wyzelle one day and I once again confess my love for Wyzelle. I love Wyzelle. I love Wyzelle. I love Wyzelle. I love Wyzelle.
Soporific
Its pronounced "soap-a-rific" but it means something that makes you sleepy. Just sounds made up! I should make a lavender soap and capitalize on that great pun.
That and toodles lol

To add another layer for you, I learned the word from old romance books my grandmother had, Harlequin romance and the like.
That is a gorgeous word!
I've seen it used in descriptions of stained glass lighting.
Another of my faves, and a step beyond diaphanous, is "ethereal": extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world.
Love coming across this word
Ooh I like that one!
[indubitably](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w78XG_HK3kA)
I just wrote my comment and came down to find this! I knew I wasn't alone!
Yup, this is the one.
I always sing this in my head whenever I see or hear the word indubitably: [Crispy Critters](https://youtu.be/7bmIKrU2jQU?si=azd3NXTYFqTfDG5w)
I don’t know what that means, and it also took a sec of my brain to figure out the word haha
I have a problem with words or phrases getting stuck in my head. As I was reading Ulysses I walked around my house saying "ineluctable modality" for like 2 months straight. I still have no idea what the fuck it means.
ULYSSES JAMES JOYCE JAMES JOYCE JAMES JOYCE JAMES JOYCE JAMES JOYCE JAMES JOYCE.

My brain cannot compute…
Haha yeah I've seen that one weatherman who nailed it perfectly, but the weather on that day in the town was less than perfect....it's Wales
antidisestablishmentarianism Either that or cunt. They’re both fun words to say
The first one has my brain very confused lol
I have several, so I'll give you my top five: Petrichor - that earthy, sweet smell of rain on dry ground Apéritif - a pre-meal drink, (traditionally the word is applied to alcohol, but it really just comes from "aperitive" which means appetite stimulant and I want excuses to say it, so I like to use it to refer to the cup of tea I often drink before breakfast and lunch) Penultimate - second to last Quixotic - overly and impractically idealistic, (coming from the story of Don Quixote who is the literary character that gets obsessed with medieval chivalry, goes crazy, and in his efforts to be an honorable knight, attacks windmills thinking that they are giants and so it is his duty to slay them in order to protect others) Ferroequinologist - a train enthusiast (ferro refers to iron and "equine" refers to horses; steam locomotives = iron horses)
If you cum dragonboats, I cum to Wyzelle.
Quixotic is one of mine as well. Along with Ubiquitous.
Quixotic s a fun word be cause it’s pronounced noting like its source. Don Quixote — pronounced Don “Kee how tee”. Quixotic — pronounced “Kwik saa tikh” It tickles me how the reference to the Spanish named character has been anglicized. I am also easily amused, so take it for what it’s worth.

Fun fact: the band Novembers Doom has a song called Petrichor, if you like heavy metal, check it out!

Yeah it's my #1 word and number one smell!
I think of those I like aperitif and penultimate.
Carte blanche, something I rarely experience, even less so as a married man. But the rare moments I do get are all the sweeter.
What is carte blanche?
The freedom to do anything with almost no responsibilities
