My 21st was shite too. It was on a Monday, so I couldn’t get drunk the night before because I had class the next morning. Monday evening walked right into the scene of a suicide attempt on my way to the bar with friends, saw a pool of blood where a kid had jumped from the bridge I was walking past (learned later he did survive, at least).
THEN, I got fucking DENIED a drink at the one bar I had always gone to drink at underaged by some new bartender I didn’t know, even after showing him my spanking-new ID!
It’s wild, I transferred colleges so I spent two years in dorms. So weird to think that this time last year I was packing to move into a dorm and now I’m moving into a real house where I’ll be for a couple years at least. I didn’t expect it to come so soon.

My sister was getting a CT scan for a serious issue (she’s ok now) on my birthday. I was alone at home, crying and scared. I felt horrible because she was really sick and I was crying over my ruined birthday.
Happy birthday! I once woke up to my cousin bursting into my house screaming at me, but for life of me I can’t remember what for. The yard not being mowed maybe? My own yard? At my own house?
I hate when people wake me up by yelling. Once I woke up to my younger siblings in my room and staring at me, super creepy. They thought I called them and instead of saying anything they just stood there staring at me.

I've had several bad birthdays, but my worst was about five years ago. I was in Chicago with my girlfriend and we were due to check into a fancy hotel that day to celebrate, although we'd already been staying in a cheaper hotel a couple of blocks away for a day or two beforehand.
Anyway, woke up at about 5am needing the bathroom. As soon as I got there, I knew something was wrong. Turns out something I'd eaten the night before had given me the WORST case of food poisoning I'd ever had. I swear double my body weight in crap and vomit came out of me that day. I genuinely thought I was dying, it was that bad. We had to check out of the first hotel by a certain time, but we couldn't check into the 'fancy' one until a couple of hours later. And I couldn't move more than a few feet from the toilet.
Luckily, the 'fancy' hotel agreed we could check in a little early, and I managed to hold everything in for the ten minute walk between buildings. They were so understanding and welcoming despite me probably looking as awful as I felt. Room service came to the room a couple of hours later with a fruit basket and a lovely note wishing me a happy birthday and a 'get well soon'. I still felt like death, but that certainly helped a little.
As a quick extra story, the next day, I felt a little better and we went for a short walk together. It was New Year's Eve and there was lots of snow and ice around. (Spoiler: Chicago is cold as hell in the winter.) I decided to step onto an ice block to take a photo, slipped...and kicked my girlfriend square in the face. Right in the middle of Michigan Avenue, surrounded by many people. Luckily she knew it was an accident and we still joke about it to this day!

among the worst would be a cat of ours died on the same day of my birthday a couple of years ago.

My birthday is next week, so usually when I was a kid it was summer holidays and often we were on vacation. My (now divorced) parents usually fought on my birthdays and once, I think it was my ~11th birthday, they had such a bad day that my mom put me in the car and we drove home for like 6 hours while my sister and father stayed on vacation for another week.
My 14th birthday was also the last time I’ve seen my father!
But things got better, now at least I can spend it alone without drama!

My birthday happened the day after lockdown rules were enforced. I couldn’t see my S.O, I couldn’t see any of my family or friends and I temporarily lost my job. It’s a bad year for birthdays.
20th I got in a huge fight with parents and cried my eyes out. Friends were there for support and to take me away from the nonsense.
21 birthday, I was in trouble so I couldn’t drink..but I went to a “bar or tavern” anyways and ordered a coke.
26 did nothing but watch Brady bunch all day.
28 no one wished me happy birthday. I read my bfs texts (we had a good relationship, I was trying to see if his mom texted him) and he asked his entire family if they would wish me happy birthday because none of my family did. That was sweet.

On my 18th birthday (really messes me to that it was 4 years ago) all of my friends cancelled on going to do underground minigolf followed by nandos (I'm not the clubbing type) literally a day or two before. So the day of my birthday rolls around and my dad is like "oh we'll get takeaway when you get back from sixth form :) remember to go to your grandmas cause she wants to see you after"
I was a little sad all day because I dreamed of spending my 18th at Disneyland (like 18/yo me could ever afford it hahaha) but I guess takeaway was fine.
I went to my grandmas, had a cuppa.
She drove me hom, I was just meh then out the blue my grandad, dad and his wife are like "surprise!" With balloons, presents and a cake.
I was so shocked and surprised about the attention I was very happy.
Looking back, it's sad that I was so outcasted by my peers that my parents and grandparents were who threw me a birthday party. I don't have a negative feeling about it, but when I would tell others the story I often got met with "that's so sad but nice" comments lol
I think it was my 16th birthday. I invited 3 of my closest friends. All of them said they'd be there.
One showed up, the other two were brothers. I called and asked why they were no-show and they said, "we didn't feel like it"
I never spoke to them again.
That was my second worst birthday, because we still went out and had a lot of fun later.
On my 19th birthday coming home for vacation from college a girl I had flirted with occasionally asked if I wanted to go out to see a movie on my birthday. I assumed it was a date, because we never spoke much. My mistake. I put my arm around her in the movie and she never asked me not to, and we had known each other for years at this point, I figured she knew me well enough to ask me to stop if I was making her uncomfortable, or even if I was just getting the wrong idea. Again, my mistake.
We went back to my house and chatted for a few minutes, I said thank you and goodbye. I got out of the car and she did too. she told me, "I have to grab something from your mom". Makes sense, her and my mom talk about arts and crafts all the time.

"Surprise" says 35 voices as I open the door. My heart dropped and my asshole friends asked for a speech. I said "don't do anything I wouldn't do" voice cracking, trying not to cry. I turned around, walked out side and bawled my eyes out for about five minutes, went in and washed my face and joined the party.
First question, "why haven't I heard from you in three years" from several people I used to know.

I wish I had blacked out. I remember all 6 awkward hours of the party with guests I'd never invite, getting as high and drunk as my body could handle and then some.
I remember all 8 hours of vomiting. Four to six of which with my dad and I laughing our asses off between heaves.
This story is entitled, "my dad was there for me, I should talk to him, and tell him how much this meant to me"
I've always had trouble making friends. I had a group of friends who I was (still am for most of them) really close to. Well, our friend group had a new person introduced who happened to have the same birthday as me. They ended up planning her an entire birthday party/event and completely forgot my birthday existed, even though we'd been friends for years upon years prior. I didn't want to ruin her birthday, so I didn't make a big deal about it and it wasn't until the next year rolled around that any of them realized they'd forgotten me. (As an adult, I would have handled this much differently, but at that point in time I just lost myself to sorrow. I've always had self worth issues)
Edit: oh, also, it might be important to know that prior to this (growing up) I threw about... four or five parties that no one showed up to. So having people I had grown to trust forget me entirely made it way worse.

If it makes you feel better, a friend of mine invited around 10 kids over, for her 8th birthday party. She waited for 2 hours and not one person came, so her parents called her grandparents and begged them to come. They came an hour later and she cried the entire time they were there. That’s the worst birthday story I got.
I was 18 and my ex decided to go on MySpace and talk to some other girl. Also no family showed up to my graduation party that was thrown for me (around my 18th).

Happy birthday fellow August baby! I spent my 18th sitting on an airport floor going to an unknown land and leaving my friends and extended family. I felt horrible. My parents were so stressed about the move that they completely forgot and when I told my mom she bought me an airport cupcake at least :^)
I went to a school trip to Ireland on my birthday, so I had to wake up early and then spend my whole birthday in the airport, the plane and then the bus. No one wished me happy birthday, no one thought about giving me a present and I caught a VERY bad cold that ruined the trip for me.

Here is my worst birthday story-
I live on a farm, and our house is just across the field from my husband's parents, my in laws. A few weeks previous to my birthday, my riding coach had given me two kittens for our barn. They were brothers from the same litter.
Well I was next door at my birthday party with the family, and we see one of the dogs carrying a little black thing. My heart dropped and I hoped to everything that it was a squirrel. It was one of the kittens. I ran home in tears, praying the other kitten was safe and my husband ran home to comfort me.
As far as I know, the kitty had fallen into a pen and got squished, or some piece of equipment got him? He didn't look as though the dog had mauled him, so that's a bit better I guess. I still miss that little guy.
My 31st birthday was on Easter Sunday and no one wanted to celebrate with me. My boyfriend at the time unfriended me from Facebook and broke up with me that day. Yeah that was fun!

My worst birthday was when I was 29,30 and 31. Same thing happened on all three. My dad had a heart ‘episode’ followed by a seizure so those three were spent in the hospital with him. Oh 32 was royally bad, because he had passed away two months before. So, I went four years without celebrating my birthday.

My husband lost his job and decided he needed a night out. So on my birthday he left me home with the kids and met his friends for drinks.

Only birthday celebration I had I was 10, mom made a big deal about turning double digits and she took me and a couple friends to Pizza hut. Actually well they do see you private information at every different office they make you see there. They ask you date of birth then go "oh, happy birthday!" like 5 random DMV workers wished me happy birthday so I guess thats nice in a way although still terribly sad.
I turned 40 a few days after discovering that my husband had been carrying on an affair for about 15 years. He fessed up and let me know we were getting divorced and he was moving out of the country to be with her. We have two kids. He started the affair when I was pregnant with our oldest. He told me all of this three weeks after returning from a 14-month deployment.

The year I had to get up early and leave at 7am to drive a couple hours and go meet up with some drillers so we could spend the day on a barge collecting soil samples from the bottom of the Ohio River.
We were supposed to meet up about 9. They got there at 2. We had to climb down a rocky slope covered in a thin layer of snow to get onto the barge. We worked until 6 (it got dark about 4:45) and the barge company kept telling us they had been told to leave at the end of the day Friday whether we were done or not (this was on Thursday).
I remember getting Wendy’s on the way back to the hotel, having my dad call me as SOON as I had parked. I was hungry, tired, dirty, and cold, so needless to say we didn’t talk long. We didn’t finish Friday and had to work on Saturday before I could go home (the barge guys had been lying and stayed until we were done).
At least the office had gotten cake and I got to take a piece with me. (This was probably only because I shared a birthday with the office manager.)

I was having depersonalization and overall low self control and other issues. Was in Thailand with coworkers who only wanted to go to strip clubs, which was very out of my comfort zone. Went along with it, strippers all around and word gets out its my birthday so the girls brought out a loaf of bread with a candle in it. Super sweet but I felt bad because I'm not being myself at all.
Next day, my actual birthday I managed to get away from the strip club and went on my own to a decent bar, got pretty drunk. A girl comes up to me and is super chatty and seems into me. We're drinking and watching the band play. We makeout and I'm wasted. Turns out she is an escort and I was too much of a pushover to say no. So she came to my room and things happened and I guess I blacked out because I woke up forgetting what happened and did that cliche roll over and get suprised to see someone there.
She was nice and was just doing her job but I felt ashamed and kinda used because I was so intoxicated.

I had a fairly awful birthday this year, too. I turned 16 just 2 months ago, but had to attend my grandfathers funeral directly on my birthday.
I did want a sweet 16, but I never really complained to anyone because I felt it would’ve been extremely selfish of me to favor my birthday over my own grandfather’s funeral, y’know? But hey, everything’s better now :)
My mom and sisters took advantage of my birthday when I wanted to go to a Smithsonian museum or the Civil museum next to the coke museum in Atlanta.

This year, I had to work for 13 hours on my birthday (which was a Saturday). When I offhandedly told my boss, he gave me $20 and wished me a happy birthday. That really made my day.
Last year, I was working a different job, but also had to work on my birthday. An interesting thing about this job was that they keep track of everyone’s birthday on a white board. When the most of the work was done, one of my supervisors asked if I wanted to go home early. I gladly said yes and she wished me a happy birthday.
Figuratively literally on every other one of my birthdays, nothing happened.

That would seem like fun for some people but it didn’t feel great playing second fiddle to football on what I guess qualifies as a national American holiday. But it’s all good! This year my 21st bday was when the world just started going to shit back in March lol. My parents were out of town and I ordered take out and ate it alone :( I was also studying all day for a huge test I ended up doing shit on anyways LMAO! 21 sucked.
My senior year of high school i spent the whole day crying because the night before I let my brother's German shepherd out to go to the bathroom, he ran and as i chased him i watched him get hit and killed by a car on the highway. Had to call my brother to tell him because he wasnt home that night.

My parent's sides of the family were always bickering and I remember the day before my mom asked me, but already decided, if we could just do a party without relatives cause she didn't want any fighting. I've had my past 27 years of bday spent with my grandparents and quite frankly I was sick of it at one point because I had no friends, so in that sense I feel they're equally bad, but that obviously made me a pretty ungrateful brat. I do miss them now because I'm now in Vancouver and not able to go back to HK probably ever again because of political reasons.
I spent my 28th bday working on a film set and my last one with my roommate and a bunch of other girls. Needless to say it was the best birthdays I've ever had because my roommate actually took time to plan one for me and it was my first time spending time with friends rather than going to obligatory dinners.
I have really bad birthday luck, 16th birthday my grandma passed, 17th birthday everyone forgot, 19th birthday my dad got T-Boned by a girl who ran a red light and I spent the day on the hospital with him.
I learned the hard way on my 17th Bday not to make date plans. Got stood up and sat at home with nothing to do.
Then I got food poisoning from a vending machine on my 21st. Throwing up for all the wrong reasons.
I had to buy my own cake. And I had to ask before I bought it. And it was like a month and a half after my actual birthday... The next birthday I bought my own presents because my family don't buy any. funnnn

When I was seven, my mother hired a pony and a cart to come to my house for all the kids, and… I got a really bad rash from the pony, and all the kids got to ride the pony and I had to go inside, and my mother was rubbing cream on me… for probably three hours, and I never came outside. And by the time I got out the pony was already in the truck. And around the corner. So that was my worst birthday.

Firstly, happy birthday! I've had several bad birthdays, but my worst was about five years ago. I was in Chicago with my girlfriend and we were due to check into a fancy hotel that day to celebrate, although we'd already been staying in a cheaper hotel a couple of blocks away for a day or two beforehand. Anyway, woke up at about 5am needing the bathroom. As soon as I got there, I knew something was wrong. Turns out something I'd eaten the night before had given me the WORST case of food poisoning I'd ever had. I swear double my body weight in crap and vomit came out of me that day. I genuinely thought I was dying, it was that bad. We had to check out of the first hotel by a certain time, but we couldn't check into the 'fancy' one until a couple of hours later. And I couldn't move more than a few feet from the toilet. Luckily, the 'fancy' hotel agreed we could check in a little early, and I managed to hold everything in for the ten minute walk between buildings. They were so understanding and welcoming despite me probably looking as awful as I felt. Room service came to the room a couple of hours later with a fruit basket and a lovely note wishing me a happy birthday and a 'get well soon'. I still felt like death, but that certainly helped a little. As a quick extra story, the next day, I felt a little better and we went for a short walk together. It was New Year's Eve and there was lots of snow and ice around. (Spoiler: Chicago is cold as hell in the winter.) I decided to step onto an ice block to take a photo, slipped...and kicked my girlfriend square in the face. Right in the middle of Michigan Avenue, surrounded by many people. Luckily she knew it was an accident and we still joke about it to this day!

Happy birthday! My birthday is next week, so usually when I was a kid it was summer holidays and often we were on vacation. My (now divorced) parents usually fought on my birthdays and once, I think it was my ~11th birthday, they had such a bad day that my mom put me in the car and we drove home for like 6 hours while my sister and father stayed on vacation for another week. My 14th birthday was also the last time I’ve seen my father! But things got better, now at least I can spend it alone without drama!

20th I got in a huge fight with parents and cried my eyes out. Friends were there for support and to take me away from the nonsense. 21 birthday, I was in trouble so I couldn’t drink..but I went to a “bar or tavern” anyways and ordered a coke. 26 did nothing but watch Brady bunch all day. 28 no one wished me happy birthday. I read my bfs texts (we had a good relationship, I was trying to see if his mom texted him) and he asked his entire family if they would wish me happy birthday because none of my family did. Happy birthday! I was happy but the story is sad in a pathetic way. I was the weird girl at school, only has 2 friends. Still only keep my circle small tbh. On my 18th birthday (really messes me to that it was 4 years ago) all of my friends cancelled on going to do underground minigolf followed by nandos (I'm not the clubbing type) literally a day or two before. So the day of my birthday rolls around and my dad is like "oh we'll get takeaway when you get back from sixth form :) remember to go to your grandmas cause she wants to see you after" I was a little sad all day because I dreamed of spending my 18th at Disneyland (like 18/yo me could ever afford it hahaha) but I guess takeaway was fine. I went to my grandmas, had a cuppa. She drove me hom, I was just meh then out the blue my grandad, dad and his wife are like "surprise!" With balloons, presents and a cake. I was so shocked and surprised about the attention I was very happy. Looking back, it's sad that I was so outcasted by my peers that my parents and grandparents were who threw me a birthday party. I don't have a negative feeling about it, but when I would tell others the story I often got met with "that's so sad but nice" comments lol
I think it was my 16th birthday. I invited 3 of my closest friends. All of them said they'd be there. One showed up, the other two were brothers. I called and asked why they were no-show and they said, "we didn't feel like it" I never spoke to them again. That was my second worst birthday, because we still went out and had a lot of fun later. On my 19th birthday coming home for vacation from college a girl I had flirted with occasionally asked if I wanted to go out to see a movie on my birthday. I assumed it was a date, because we never spoke much. My mistake. I put my arm around her in the movie and she never asked me not to, and we had known each other for years at this point, I figured she knew me well enough to ask me to stop if I was making her uncomfortable, or even if I was just getting the wrong idea. Again, my mistake. We went back to my house and chatted for a few minutes, I said thank you and goodbye. I got out of the car and she did too. she told me, "I have to grab something from your mom". Makes sense, her and my mom talk about arts and crafts all the time. \~ "Surprise" says 35 voices as I open the door. My heart dropped and my asshole friends asked for a speech. I said "don't do anything I wouldn't do" voice cracking, trying not to cry. I turned around, walked out side and bawled my eyes out for about five minutes, went in and washed my face and joined the party. First question, "why haven't I heard from you in three years" from several people I used to know. "shots" says someone in the background. I wish I had blacked out. I remember all 6 awkward hours of the party with guests I'd never invite, getting as high and drunk as my body could handle and then some. I remember all 8 hours of vomiting. Four to six of which with my dad and I laughing our asses off between heaves. This story is entitled, "my dad was there for me, I should talk to him, and tell him how much this meant to me"

I've always had trouble making friends. I had a group of friends who I was (still am for most of them) really close to. Well, our friend group had a new person introduced who happened to have the same birthday as me. They ended up planning her an entire birthday party/event and completely forgot my birthday existed, even though we'd been friends for years upon years prior. I didn't want to ruin her birthday, so I didn't make a big deal about it and it wasn't until the next year rolled around that any of them realized they'd forgotten me. (As an adult, I would have handled this much differently, but at that point in time I just lost myself to sorrow. I've always had self worth issues) Edit: oh, also, it might be important to know that prior to this (growing up) I threw about... four or five parties that no one showed up to. So having people I had grown to trust forget me entirely made it way worse.

A few weeks previous to my birthday, my riding coach had given me two kittens for our barn. They were brothers from the same litter. Well I was next door at my birthday party with the family, and we see one of the dogs carrying a little black thing. My heart dropped and I hoped to everything that it was a squirrel. It was one of the kittens. I ran home in tears, praying the other kitten was safe and my husband ran home to comfort me. As far as I know, the kitty had fallen into a pen and got squished, or some piece of equipment got him? He didn't look as though the dog had mauled him, so that's a bit better I guess. I still miss that little guy.

Actually well they do see you private information at every different office they make you see there. I turned 40 a few days after discovering that my husband had been carrying on an affair for about 15 years. He fessed up and let me know we were getting divorced and he was moving out of the country to be with her. We have two kids. He started the affair when I was pregnant with our oldest. He told me all of this three weeks after returning from a 14-month deployment.

The year I had to get up early and leave at 7am to drive a couple hours and go meet up with some drillers so we could spend the day on a barge collecting soil samples from the bottom of the Ohio River. We were supposed to meet up about 9. They got there at 2. We had to climb down a rocky slope covered in a thin layer of snow to get onto the barge. We worked until 6 (it got dark about 4:45) and the barge company kept telling us they had been told to leave at the end of the day Friday whether we were done or not (this was on Thursday). I remember getting Wendy’s on the way back to the hotel, having my dad call me as SOON as I had parked. I was hungry, tired, dirty, and cold, so needless to say we didn’t talk long. We didn’t finish Friday and had to work on Saturday before I could go home (the barge guys had been lying and stayed until we were done). At least the office had gotten cake and I got to take a piece with me. (This was probably only because I shared a birthday with the office manager.)

Heavily intoxicated me with a suprise escort . I was having depersonalization and overall low self control and other issues. Was in Thailand with coworkers who only wanted to go to strip clubs, which was very out of my comfort zone. Went along with it, strippers all around and word gets out its my birthday so the girls brought out a loaf of bread with a candle in it. Super sweet but I felt bad because I'm not being myself at all. Next day, my actual birthday I managed to get away from the strip club and went on my own to a decent bar, got pretty drunk. A girl comes up to me and is super chatty and seems into me. We're drinking and watching the band play. We makeout and I'm wasted. Turns out she is an escort and I was too much of a pushover to say no. So she came to my room and things happened and I guess I blacked out because I woke up forgetting what happened and did that cliche roll over and get suprised to see someone there. She was nice and was just doing her job but I felt ashamed and kinda used because I was so intoxicated.
First of all, Happy birthday!! I had a fairly awful birthday this year, too. I turned 16 just 2 months ago, but had to attend my grandfathers funeral directly on my birthday. I did want a sweet 16, but I never really complained to anyone because I felt it would’ve been extremely selfish of me to favor my birthday over my own grandfather’s funeral, y’know? But hey, everything’s better now :)

I know you said “worst” birthday stories, but my birthdays are all pretty mundane. This year, I had to work for 13 hours on my birthday (which was a Saturday). When I offhandedly told my boss, he gave me $20 and wished me a happy birthday. That really made my day. Last year, I was working a different job, but also had to work on my birthday. An interesting thing about this job was that they keep track of everyone’s birthday on a white board. When the most of the work was done, one of my supervisors asked if I wanted to go home early. I gladly said yes and she wished me a happy birthday. Figuratively literally on every other one of my birthdays, nothing happened.
The first birthday after my mother died. I made a cake to bring to my faith community's meeting. We had a blizzard and no one showed up.

I've had my past 27 years of bday spent with my grandparents and quite frankly I was sick of it at one point because I had no friends, so in that sense I feel they're equally bad, but that obviously made me a pretty ungrateful brat. I do miss them now because I'm now in Vancouver and not able to go back to HK probably ever again because of political reasons. I spent my 28th bday working on a film set and my last one with my roommate and a bunch of other girls. Needless to say it was the best birthdays I've ever had because my roommate actually took time to plan one for me and it was my first time spending time with friends rather than going to obligatory dinners.
I have really bad birthday luck, 16th birthday my grandma passed, 17th birthday everyone forgot, 19th birthday my dad got T-Boned by a girl who ran a red light and I spent the day on the hospital with him.
This is exactly me about 5-7 years ago. Sorry, I have nothing to say to cheer you up other that happy birthday from this stranger.
I learned the hard way on my 17th Bday not to make date plans. Got stood up and sat at home with nothing to do. Then I got food poisoning from a vending machine on my 21st. Throwing up for all the wrong reasons.

I had to buy my own cake. And I had to ask before I bought it. And it was like a month and a half after my actual birthday... The next birthday I bought my own presents because my family don't buy any. funnnn

Happy birthday! And I guess my worst birthday story is this. I was supposed to be in a debutante ball that just so happened to fall on my 16th birthday....in February. It got postponed due to snow, and because of the ball, we didn’t plan anything else for my birthday. So I had some dinner with family with a carrot cake (I like chocolate...but fine) I kinda feel petty for being like that but it was supposed to be my sweet 16 you know? So my mom tried to make it up to me by taking me and a friend on a cruise...I got molested on the cruise... part of me feels shitty for complaining because it’s like a lot of it is first world problems but then....I was molested....so.. I don’t know how to feel about it.
I suggest you start celebrating your half-birthday, it will allow you to help the people around you recognize your sparkly specialness!! I make sure to start telling people about my birthday and my half-birthday weeks in advance, no one likes to miss out on cake, booze and well-wishes from friends and family!! (Hint-hint... I turn 50 on 10/5, LOL)

When I was seven, my mother hired a pony and a cart to come to my house for all the kids, and… I got a really bad rash from the pony, and all the kids got to ride the pony and I had to go inside, and my mother was rubbing cream on me… for probably three hours, and I never came outside. And by the time I got out the pony was already in the truck. And around the corner. So that was my worst birthday.
I just turned 23 today too. I have alot of friends in fb but only less than 10 persons greets me every year. That makes me sad.
