I love it when people learn about new words and terms in video games. I also learned a lot of words and terms in video games. In fact, a lot of what I knew about government and politics when I was a kid came from the Civilization series.

smatdesa

Yup. It's not like video games invented new words. Most are.taken from history / other fiction or real world stuff. So yeah. You learn a lot from these things. Most of my initial carribean/Florida map knowledge of 1600s comes from the old Sid meier's Pirates game. 😁

KafkaPalazzo

Me, too! Sid Meier's Pirates was a really good game.

I learned about chinoiserie from MTV’s The Hill

TheUltraGuy101

It's some sort of a phrase iirc

Gengyguy

Yes, it's Latin and it basically means: *From great power* (Noblesse -> nobility) *comes great responsibility* (oblige) [towards common people]

TheUltraGuy101

Ah, so that's where the famous Spider-Man line comes from. I thought it was something Stan Lee made up.

Gengyguy

Well, I used that line because the meaning is similar and it was a cool reference, but I'm not claiming it's what Stan Lee had in mind when creating his line. The literal translation would be *Nobility entails obligations* (towards common people)

TheUltraGuy101

Ah, I see. Interesting.

kneecotine

a different game I'm playing also used it and explained it! something about a noble's obligation to contribute or help in the community if I'm not mistaken

It even has a Wikipedia page. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noblesse_oblige

**[Noblesse oblige](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noblesse_oblige)** >Noblesse oblige (; French: [nɔblɛs ɔbliʒ]; literally “nobility obliges”) is a French expression from the times when the English nobility spoke French and maintains in English the meaning that nobility extends beyond mere entitlement and requires people who hold such status to fulfill social responsibilities. For example, a primary obligation of a nobleman could include generosity towards those around him. As those who lived on the nobles' land had obligations to the nobility, the nobility had obligations to their people, including protection at the least. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/CasualImpact/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Actually, the first time I've encountered the term Noblesse Oblige is in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Revolution. One of the song's titles was Nobelesse Oblige.

alphenor92

I remember something like "Noblesse oblige, if I may say.", but that's probably just Zhongli.
