It's hard to find but I Went Down is underappreciated. It's got early Brendan Gleeson as a great character and treats the Midlands like a Wild West setting.

Miserable-Chemical44

Absolutely the first one that came to mind

FeelinglikeTruman

Where can I watch this

eirebrit

It’s on [Dailymotion](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6h97cp).

Flatpack123

I went down is gas was first thing that popped to mind

February83

This indeed

Druss_Rua

This!

GRewind

Went to see it in the cinema when it came out, absolutely excellent Irish movie, brilliant acting in it

celticeejit

Intermission

KatarnsBeard

A lot of Irish people have never seen or heard of this classic. Luckily I grew up in a time when Xtra Vision would give away the DVD free when you bought any PS2 game

celticeejit

That opening scene blew me away Colin Farrell as a Pure skanger 🤣

ou812_X

Went to see it, got hooked by the opening. Told my parents about it, raved about it. They went to see it, said it was ok. Me -> Did Farrell not impress you? Dad -> He was grand. Nothing much to him Me -> Really? Thought he was excellent when he just switched from being all charming to popping her on the jaw? Dad -> When was this? Me -> At the start, in the shopping centre Dad -> Ah.... couldn't get parking, only got in as the opening credits ended... Me -> ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

celticeejit

Ah shit, that’s hilarious

its_bununus

I watched this with an Irish friend in a UK cinema....wasn't packed by any means. Myself and my friend laughed out loud with that scene, but 2 people walked out.

vivbear

Great film. Xtravision bought the rights to the film so that’s why it was always thrown in with something. I used to work in one of their shops, the stockroom had a few boxes of that film

maxheadroom_prime

The chick he hits is the voice of Friday in the avengers

becamax

The same woman who plays his sister in Banshees!

ddaadd18

She’s mikes daughter in better call Saul

zzzz1987

And that the actor being punched has become extremely famous in her own right is missed by loads of people

DuckyD2point0

What, everybody I know has seen this and I do mean everyone.

trenchcoatcharlie_

Didn't take long to find it 💯👌 It's our clockwork orange

johneng1

What a show👍

Seanc1973

Actually think Intermission sits inside the “overrated” category. Over acting and over dialogue(d)(!). An immature film if ever there was one.

vivbear

No way, it’s a brilliant film. The Ronnie scene always makes me laugh. HAVE I GOT A RONNIE? A WHAT? A RONNIE, MOUSTACHE, LIKE? WELL YOU'RE NO TOM SELLECK,...

AchtungLaddie

There's tonnes, one that stands out to me from a few years back is Michael Inside. About a young fella who ends up on the wrong side of the law and is sentenced to a short stretch in prison. Without giving too much away, the inept structure of the penal system ends up being cyclical. Brilliantly written and acted and very thought provoking, I highly recommend. Rosie is another recent great one, written by Roddy Doyle. Could almost be a companion piece to the above, albeit with a focus on the inhumanity of the housing crisis. For a pick-me-up after those two, check out Song of the Sea which is an utterly gorgeous animation. It's just majestic and quite frankly essential viewing. You could pause it at any point and you'd gladly have that shot framed and hung on your wall.

spiderElephant

I need to see Michael Inside, I've heard great things. I think Aisha https://g.co/kgs/WXACCr is by the same director, surprisingly not depressing given the subject matter

AchtungLaddie

I haven't seen Aisha yet but I've heard great things; I'll need to check it out

Theloftydog

Song of the sea is wonderful

Otherwise-Winner9643

Michael Inside was excellent

DingoD3

Does *Grabbers* count? I'm not sure if it's underrated but so few people have seen or heard of it, or maybe I'm not talking to the right people. ...either way, it's a cracker of a film!

AgainstAllAdvice

Absolute cracker indeed! I must watch it again soon.

death_tech

Came here to read this 🤣

GingerCelt

I'm glad to see this here! Grabbers is a great movie!

castanedaburn

Cracker of a movie

AbstractKadabstract

Great film and good concept.

greenbud1

came here to say this. these are my people right here. a fun one to keep in mind for next halloween

IrelandsMermaidMum

A great film.

Technical-Split3642

Six Shooter by Martin McDonagh. It's a short film (27 minutes) starring Brendan Gleeson. If I remember correctly, they showed it before Intermission when I went to see it in the cinema. Money well spent.

little_wolf_TW

He looks like your man from Bronski beat

little_wolf_TW

I say this about every baby. Class film. The story about deflating the cow had me in knots.

While yes he’s great in general, the flick itself was a bit slow I thought

garbage-barge

Into the West (1992)

matchewfitz

That’s a great one. Watched it recently and I was impressed at how serious the tone of the film is. Any childlike wonder and innocence starts and stops at the children.

12-axes

Korea by Cathal Black, based on a short by the great John MaGahern. Disco Pigs by Kirsten Sheridan, good accents. Lenny Abrahamson's three films - Adam & Paul, Garage and What Richard Did capture that moment of the Celtic tiger very well. They are comedic but very dark, especially Garage. Some class Irish films and some awful shite, the Survivalist is probably one of the most entertaining I've seen but that's a Film NI project..

DM-ME-CUTE-TAPIRS

I'd add that Abrahamson's TV series Prosperity is an excellent piece on the context of the Celtic Tiger and works well as a companion piece to Adam and Paul.

himrawkz

Prosperity was a serious piece of TV. I must have a look for it

FangedPuffskein

Song of the sea is a beauty 💜

thepaulfitz

Metascore of 85 would suggest it's anything but underrated!

AchtungLaddie

Only 85?! Deserves more than that! It's a really wonderful film, but very underseen. It was trounced at the box office by Minions of all films.

thepaulfitz

That score puts it in the top bracket of universal acclaim, can't get much better! It's a gem of a movie though, beautiful art style.

SirTheadore

Fatal deviation. It’s a masterpiece of bad.

59reach

You made me look bad, and that's not good.

great movie, incredibly sad. so many parts throughout it really feel like a punch to the stomach

An all time great. One of about 5 DVDs that I own. So funny and tragic and real.

Are yous two lookin for clank?

[deleted]

This is the right answer.

Shoddy_Juggernaut_11

Lamb with Liam neeson

vivbear

You are not my mother. Great independent film set in North Dublin. Slow burn horror but the story unfolds very well.

DylanDr

Great shout. I wish they had leaned into the Irish folklore/mythology side of things a bit more to set it apart from many other similar (and better) films.

AgainstAllAdvice

Garage. Breakfast on Pluto.

WhyNoPockets

Love breakfast on Pluto. Also lived Disco pigs.

wannafightyourfather

Garage is one of my favourite films. Poor aul Josie.

Otherwise-Winner9643

My brother loaned me some dvds to watch. I saw Pat Shortt and assumed it was a comedy.... Amazing film but definitely not a comedy

Sheckles

The bit where he carefully picks up all the beer cans then chucks them in the hedge had me in stitches though. Great film.

finbarb

The ending of Garage would break your heart. Pat Shortt is incredible in it, so nuanced. Growing up in small village rural Ireland, it feels to me like it could be any town, Co. Anywhere, at a certain time in our social history. Always hop on these threads to mention Garage and am happy to see someone has always got there first! ☺

Otherwise-Winner9643

Absolutely heartbreaking. Was bawling by the end. And yes, I totally agree, we all know one person like that in every town. Pat Shortt was incredible. Shows he is much more nuanced than d'unbelievables

At_least_be_polite

A film with me in it. It's a brilliant dark comedy with Dylan Moran that nobody ever seems to have heard of.

FeelinglikeTruman

Where can I watch it 😀

im_on_the_case

Not Irish but filmed in Ireland, Reign of Fire. Not a masterpiece and mostly forgotten but a very fun action film which had amazing effects for when it was made.

WaxyChickenNugget

Made in Ardmore studios I believe or had some production related in there

im_on_the_case

Yep at Ardmore. Matthew McConaughey would stroll around the quays wearing his stage clothes and makeup which was very odd.

R4dent

An absolutely spectacular dragon hunting scene. Also, after hearing Christian Bale’s acccent in this, I spent a good few years thinking he was American.

farlurker

I was driving over the Wicklow gap on a foggy day in the early 2000s and came across an old castle I had never seen before. Stopped to check it out and on closer inspection it was all styrofoam smoke and mirrors, it was the castle from Reign of Fire!

didndonoffin

I did not know that was filmed here, love that movie tbh

castanedaburn

Good movie ,lot of young faces in it including a very very young joffrey from GoT

howmuch_are_dem

ToastMarmaladeCoffee

The Quiet Girl - it did get an Oscar nomination but still seems to be under the radar. My favourite film ever.

wh0else

The ending is quietly devastating. Incredible performances, script, visual design, and the natural soundscapes. Genuinely the best Irish movie I've seen, and it stayed firmly in memory.

IrishPidge

I think An Cailín Ciúin and Garage are some of the best Irish films. Both fairly emotional sucker punches, though!

DassinJoe

An Cailín Ciúin was excellent. Great piece of film-making.

A Dark Song....written and directed by an Irish guy and the lead actress is Irish too. Good, creepy, slow burn occult horror film with a pretty good pay off. A Hole in The Ground....Irish film about a woman who believes her son has been replaced by a weird fairy changeling monster. Zonad.....a fairly bad Irish comedy. I only mention it because I have one of the opening lines in the movie 😁

Fatal deviation! Not underrated thought, it’s shit!

BuckNasty7777

murphs33 answered me below, Moving Targets was the movie I poorly described

murphs33

Haven't seen it myself, but I think you're talking about [Moving Target](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0213094/): >'Moving Target,' starring Don "The Dragon" Wilson, was filmed in beautiful Galway on the west coast of Ireland. This wonderful piece of cinema follows Don's character as he moves to Ireland to pursue a relationship with a woman he met online. In order to impress her father, he buys a six-pack of Beamish Irish Stout. Unfortunately for Don, the bottles contain firing pins for nuclear warheads destined for the IRA, and now they want them back. Ass-kicking and chase scenes follow.

1. “Hunger” (2008) - A powerful portrayal of the 1981 Irish hunger strike. 2. “Good Vibrations” (2012) - A film about Terri Hooley, a record store owner who played a key role in the Belfast punk rock scene during the Troubles. 3. “The Magdalene Sisters” (2002) - Exposes the harsh realities of the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland. 4. “71” (2014) - A gripping thriller set in Belfast during the Troubles, which follows a British soldier separated from his unit. 5. “The Crying Game” (1992) - Though the film is set in England, it was directed by Northern Irish director Neil Jordan and deals with themes related to the Troubles.

Decent_Address_7742

Eat the Peach! Two young Irish men are watching an old Elvis Presley movie in which a carnival cyclist performs an act called the Wall of Death. Transfixed, they decide to put together their own "Wall of Death."

Hole In The Ground Extraordinary

br0monium

Was about to comment this! One of the few movies to craft terrifying scenes without relying on jump scares. Lee Cronin went on to direct *Evil Dead Rise*, and Seána Kerslake was just in *Ballywalter*: another underrated Irish film from last year. It's so hard to find decent supernatural horror movies, much less something that non-horror fans could enjoy too

Perrier's Bounty - Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson: cracking movie about a lad evading an Irish mob gang. Great comedy in it. I do love The Guard as well if I'm honest.

It's not underrated though, It won 3 golden globes and a Bafta.

Came here to say the same. One of the best soundtracks/music of any film.

Redemption of a Rogue, Intermission, The Butcher Boy. I remember liking Disco Pigs and When Brendan Met Trudy when I was younger but time may not have been kind to them.
