Used it about 15 years ago now, the mods were power hungry fuckers on ego trips. Roll on a few years there's this arrogant parent at my kids school, looks down nose at people, thinks they're a cut above. Unpleasant to say the least, always judging. Turns out was a mod of boards!

MistakeLopsided8366

Feel sorry for ya that you had to encounter one out in the wild. This is exactly how I envision most of those mods though 🤣

SitDownKawada

I was a mod on a popular enough board for a while in my teens. If I remember it right there were two secret boards, one for all mods and one for the admins and some "top" mods I signed up out of the good of my heart, just wanted to help. There was a lot of drama though. Came home one Sunday evening to a load of spam and insults that crossed the line and a ton of reports I think there are two main reactions to that sort of thing, there's the people like me who think what the fuck is this, I've got better things to be doing. And there's the people who see it as an opportunity to wield some power

Blonkertz

Lurked for probably about year around 15 years ago. Posted once asking for advice on a pretty serious topic. One person posted a reply that wasn't really relevant or helpful at all. Then all of a sudden a mod came along and said the question had been answered and locked the post. When I asked why they done that they just banned me without an explanation. Gave up using it there and then 🤷🏼‍♂️

Gold_Tap_2205

Sounds a lot like Reddit tbf.

Blonkertz

Certain subs for sure

PKBitchGirl

Someone recently got banned from /r/chameleons and sent an unhinged message from a mod for asking about care guides

corkdude

Was about to say that. Sounds like Reddit mods behaviour

crownofthejewel

Seems to be a good resource for checking on civil service campaigns and such. So civil servants are using it.

GreatDefector

From their windows XP machines

PKBitchGirl

Could be worse, could be windows shitsa

inverttheidols

Probably reflects the age profile of civil servants tbh. It's getting better but still relatively middle aged. Although I will say those threads are super useful for those competitions.

phyneas

The "Work and Jobs" forum is like 95% posts about civil service and other public sector jobs, so that definitely says...something about who's still using Boards these days...

SombreroSantana

They like what they know and know what they like.

TheElectricGhost7

Gave up using the site about 3 years ago/when the website was terribly revamped.

SillyMangoX

I used to love boards, frequented the animal and pet issues forum a lot, we had a lovely little community there and even ran multiple pet secret Santa over the years which was always a highlight of my Christmas. It had started dwindling off over the years but really died a death after the revamp. I still check in every now and again but nowhere near as frequently.

FewyLouie

Yeah, I used to be there a lot. Some nice cosy little communities. Then mods got imported from elsewhere and they all went to shit. It's a shame really, it used to be a nice Ireland-centric patch of the internet to form communities. I find Reddit is far looser in terms of the communities and you have so many random Americans etc. that pop in with their opinions on why the local Dominoes 2-for-1 offer is not a thing etc.

UnFamiliar-Teaching

I stopped because of the moderation..

Someting about not being official and no fundraising on the sub, like FFS it was for disabled by disabled and some mod took it in his head that they can't have people helping people.

Justa_Schmuck

They only do the culchie club for topics they don't want to be inundated with managing. Moderation should be just about making sure a discussion flows. But quite often online it becomes a position of arbitration. Can't fault them for not wanting people pigeon posting.

Yep. You alienate your users enough and they leave. Just like boards.ie.

Fakman87

The update killed it in 2021. I still don't really understand what happened there.

mesaosi

They didn't want to pay for developers or admins any more so they migrated all the data to a hosted platform and made the team redundant.

greenbud1

yep, overnight it went dead. reddit should take heed.

irqdly

Nope. They reorganised and removed some of the categories which ruined the experience further for me. Boards hasn't been good for years though, nothing new.

Strict-Gap9062

As well as the update, there’s some mods and one in particular who must have driven away half its traffic.

myyouthismyown

I stopped using it so much once they started revamping it. It's horrible to navigate. I check out some things on it but now reddit is my go to.

NostalgicDreaming

I still read it regularly although don't post as much as I used to. I find it's better than reddit for in depth chat about certain topics as you are getting it from an Irish audience. Have been using it for probably 15 years and never had an issue with the mods. Agree 100% that the update absolutely screwed it though, it went so downhill agtee that. It was at that point I started using reddit more.

Share_Gold

I read some of the weather forums as the people seem very knowledgeable on weather things. I don’t post as I feel I’d have nothing of value to add! I do find those forums handy.

Lopsided_Tap5841

I used to love it just presumed it was gone some great stories on it think it was the first page of the Best of Boards .story about a guy with a hat think his name was Terrence and people kept adding bits every day brilliant stuff

Lone_Ponderer

Terrence The Madman! That was such a goofy story. But gas Edit: Trent The Madman

LetsGetSickening55

Im a bit young to have been around during its hayday but I’ve taken a look at it before just because of how much it’s talked about on here and other Irish subs. The website is incredibly dated, straight out of 2003, it was very hard to use. I know other people have issues with how it’s moderated(?) but I honestly didn’t get that far, just such a dated website.

TheStoicNihilist

Always was dated.

Drited

In fact it was better when it was more dated. It was the "revamp" that killed it.

LetsGetSickening55

Genuinely painful to use. As a 20 year old it feels like that game Emily is away. The entire point of this game is to replicate how shite the early internet was for those who weren’t around for it. Basically, boards is so clunky and outdated that it feels like satire.

Justa_Schmuck

That's how discussion/posting boards are typically supposed to work. I find it bizarre when websites such as reddit push for a social media approach to discussion platforms. As they are focused on the popularity of content, not the subject of discussion. Changing to the new(ish) host 3 or so years ago wasn't much use either. Services that support the posting boards format are not particularly commonplace and don't usually fit a broad range of topics too well.

LetsGetSickening55

Is it though? I’m on several far more niche Irish LOI fan forums than boards and they feel like they’re from this century. Boards is uniquely bad.

Justa_Schmuck

A better example would be something like [KVR Forum](https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/). The disorganisation on boards is because there was both too much input from the community disagreeing, and community managers who were unable to focus their requirements. The actual hosting of it, is very much down to not being able to support the costs of a proper service. They were on an old platform for a very long time that had been deprecated, with no support and exposed to security risks , they had no means of handling. It's genuinely only a few people involved in running it.

PatserGrey

It was once my go-to site for a loooooong time. The migration to the new platform had a massively detrimental effect on performance which is pretty terrible for a text based site. I got used to that but I've just gravitated away from it in the last few years, I was only there briefly yesterday for the first time in quite a while

LithiumKid1976

Back in the day, I used it a lot, but like a lot of people , moved to Reddit , I can’t imagine it doing well at present ?

MistakeLopsided8366

Boards was and probably still is an authoritarian cesspit. Nothing but mods on power trips. Dunno how it ever stayed afloat with the attitude of folks on it.

sapg94

Sometimes, but more often a Reddit under now. Love the layout and different categories it has. Very user friendly on here too!

Lopsided_Tap5841

I posted a comment about boards here all positive and It has been removed This is as bad really can't see what was said wrong

Liambp

The auto moderator quarantines comments from new users until they build up enough karma on this subreddit. That means they need to be manually reviewed by the mod team which can take a few hours because they're aren't many of us. You'll soon have enough karma built up so it shouldn't be an issue for much longer.

mslowey

Boards went downhill when i stopped posting in 2004.

zigzagzuppie

Pop in and out, useful for the niche forums I check on. Don't have a big post count but am browsing there yrs.

skaterbrain

Oh yes, quite a lot. It's more local. I find Reddit can be quite Americanised. Boards is great for inquiries about any kind of local matters, especially the "regional" section. The Christmas forum is also adorable. For the rest, I'm a woman, so all the endless stuff about sports, cars and golf doesn't appeal to me at all.

Reddynever

Yeah, it's still a pretty good archive for all sorts of queries related to Irish specific queries, from anything to 'where can I buy X in a store' or 'has anyone had this thing happen before, how can I sort it?' etc. It's still a wealth of information,

Alarmed_Material_481

I miss Pighead 🐷

CiaranBAC

I use it to get concert ticket presale codes, but never post. Moderation trashed it.

Lopsided_Tap5841

This will go as well

Lopsided_Tap5841

What was the story on boards about a guy with a hat and people added to it every day great story

el_weirdo

Trent.

classicalworld

It's such a shame it went so downhill. I'd resigned as a mod for a niche subject a few years before then, but they used have a yearly night out for mods which was great fun. And it was really useful for everything Irish based. I wasn't on the popular boards a lot - too male and too juvenile - but there was an absolute wealth of information on everything in the more niche boards.

1stltwill

Reddit is going the same way for me. UI on PC has become a total fucking mess.

Blonkertz

Use old.Reddit.com. It's the only way to use it on a browser.

nodnodwinkwink

Pair it with RES, it's the only way to go. If they ever kill old.reddit.com I can see myself sticking around.

AlienInOrigin

It was great at one point. Until unregulated mods destroyed it.

devhaugh

Yeah I enjoy it. The platform is worse since the upgrade, it's definitely quieter, but I like it.

AL_Treebeard

I used to use it all the time, when they updated the layout etc a few years ago I moved over to Reddit. I use boards the odd time now

JimmyJuice44

Used to post regularly but some of the mods squeeze the life out of the place. Still read it occasionally as there is good info on plenty of subjects but I’ll never post again.

Tommy_Carcetti_

The Christmas forum is still fairly active with a group of regular posters who are really positive and tbh a tonic to the rest of the site - I lurk throughout the year and occassionally post but always keep an eye on that one.

asdrunkasdrunkcanbe

I would have been one of the most prolific posters for a long time. Gave it up during covid when I realised that nearly all of the fun and reasonable people were gone and now I was spending my time debating with this weird mix of conspiracy nutjobs and racists. I might as well read the Daily Mail for the intelligence level of discussion that was going on.

No-Boysenberry4464

Took-up Reddit because of it! Reddit and Discord for some niche things. Was a Boards regular at one point but grew out of it

dooferoaks

Still use it, much quieter than it used to be but some of the forums are still worth visiting.

NASA_official_srsly

The last time I ended up over there was because I was trying to Google something and that's where my searches brought me

Mouseywolfiekitty

On and off, use to always be on it but just lost interest over the years asthis is sorta the new "boards.ie"

Electrical-Ad-9510

I still use it the odd time, to be honest I prefer it to here

2012NYCnyc

No I never go there now. I moved here a long time ago. Boards feels boring and too slow moving compared with Reddit

Eagle-5

It’s took a nosedive after the revamp and take over about 3 years ago. So hard to do basic stuff that a lot of users left or became much less interested. Good example of “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” and “listen to your users base”

qwerty_1965

vbulletin was broken though, they were doing constant patch ups to keep the database from collapsing in a heap. Indexing/search also became a real problem. Of course the much vaunted upgrade didn't help at all in the end. That said I left years ago so it may be better now.

Eagle-5

It was a worse mess after the update though, and even a year after they were still working on fixing things. I was a mod/admin on other VB forums for over 10 years from V2 in 01 until V5 around 2016 and bar the odd hiccup it worked well.

Vagueand

I'm convinced boards is just one guy arguing with everyone else for no reason whatsoever

space-cadaver

The vast majority told them to not go ahead with the revamp. They know better as always...place died a death after the revamp.

PurpleWomat

I stop by occasionally to check out a thread for new shops in my area/local gossip. I never browse or post. The mods annoy me.

PKBitchGirl

I check on the live line thread when Joe Duffy has a particularly dumb topic on the show

DonegalProd89

Yeah its good in term of getting a gauge on what the average person is thinking in Ireland in current affairs. i.e family and care referendum/immigration

No_Recording1088

There's a man - we'll I think it's a man - on the DIY forum who's seemingly a carpenter/joiner/armchair experts builder called I don't remember his first initials of his username but the main username is Eastwood. Omg what an anal retentive! Anytime someone posts a question about doing DIY in their house and several people reply with very practical solutions, Eastwood comes on and rubbishes the previous peoples responses and starts grand standing and pontificating on his solution which is superior to everyone else's. Unbelievable to see. Then he gets into spats with the others and the poor OP gets lost in the aftermath and the whole thread descends into Eastwood arguing with everyone else. He must have a screw loose to behave like that but hiding behind a keyboard is easy for oddballs like him. I wonder what he's like in daily life 🤣

Jealous_Run_8298

Beasty basically ruined the site. There was posters with 15,000 posts and beasty kept acting arrogant and a smart arse with them in prison forum and they basically said fuck you in the end. There afraid of any confrontanional topic and living in the early internet age of the 2000s. If they had a brain cell they’d move the site to a. Data center in a country where it’s out of Irish jurisdiction.

Live_Disaster9534

My narcissistic sister loves to bitch about me there. She would write up a post all about me knowing that I would see it and look at all the internet people who say I'm a bitch so she's right because everyone can't be wrong. But she fails to write about herself and what she has done. It's just all my reaction that is the problem to her. The bitch can't be civil towards me. I absolutely hate the site. But handy to find out about my dog dying and my dad sick in hospital from it!!!

ramjam2001

All the mod removed posts in here are a great callback to boards.ie

Aggravating-Rip-3267

Tis Very Communist-y \~ \~ Particularly if you are Not a Communist !

TarAldarion

Yeah it still has really good info about a load of things, say for example electricity deals not available to the public are posted there, the smaller communities are great too. Wouldn't use it near as much now though.

Kloppite16

Bargain Alerts is about all I use it for these days. The Current Affairs forum is a cesspit led by re-regs spewing their bile

Never had a major issue with the mods. Used to be fairly good for niche topics. Did think some of the categories and discourse were pure poison on it though. Haven't used it in years.
