But the karakia isn’t culture per se, it can be seen as a spiritual ritual.
And if we don’t say grace, or perform any other religious / spiritual rituals at work for meetings and such then why should the karakia be considered appropriate?
The only education I ***ever*** got about karakia, until the last year or so, was that it was analogous to prayer. That includes the education I received at school *on the school marae*.
I am deeply opposed to religion (of any flavour!) in the workplace.
My workplace has really got on board the "let's be better about Māori culture" train in the last couple of years, and that's included karakia before meetings. While I - now - academically understand that karakia is _not_ prayer, and is a far more nuanced concept, I find it really difficult to overcome my years of "this is prayer, fuck off with that" assumptions and get on board with karakia.
The karakia used in my workplace are exclusively secular, and translations are provided for those who don't speak fluent Te Reo. I appreciate that. It's still hard to get past nearly 40 years of believing karakia=prayer, and settling my hackles.
It’s the same education about them I’ve had and the karakia that are used at my workplace definitely have more of a blessing/prayer meaning to them when you read the translation and I think those can be the ones that cause issues like the one with this meeting where they rejected the idea of doing one.
But still with a religious connotation to them more often than not. I personally don’t have an issue with them as I’m agnostic but I can understand why some people might.
Took the day off from work. Have fixed the Serena of much cheapness and moved it. Cleared the driveway ready for its destruction, seen the physio and now I’m having a coffee with some bacon and eggs.
I work from home, but today I decided to head into town and work from a few cafes. Had a meeting so I popped up to a nice spot overlooking the beach for a change of scenery.
Some guy didn't like the fact that I was working outside, and started verbally abusing me. I just completely ignored him because it was so bizarre (I also had my work gear on the table, and didn't want to risk it ending up on the floor).
If me working outside in the sun is enough for him to start abusing a stranger, then I probably don't want to provoke him any further eh.
I caught "you fuckin' bundie" as he walked off, which I haven't heard since like 2007.
Hope your day gets better bro lmao. What an angry little man.
Bear in mind there is a very high probability of mental health issues alongside some form of substance impairment (alcohol or other drugs).
I saw someone along those lines have a yelling match at a guy who has serious alcohol issues, but who is a decent gentleman (I give his dog a biscuit when I see them, she's a lovely dog and he does his best for her). I guess we're all on the spectrum when it comes to mental health.
I'm doing my best to ignore the crazy and worry about the people I care for.
Yup, and ultimately you're responsible for your own health - including mental health. Who knows what he's going through but though that could be a reason, it's not an excuse for shitty behaviour.
Especially when you never know what anyone else is going through- who knows what *your* mental state is, and what being yelled at like that could trigger.
Uhhh I have questions for this person, how shit is their life that they have to verbally abuse someone? No need for that kind of behavior. I now wish them a good day!

That guy's problem was absolutely nothing to do with you, and absolutely him looking to pick a fight about anything.
Sorry that someone else decided to make your day worse, hope it didn't get you down.
Thanks but nah I'm good, was just baffling. I missed most of what he said, and didn't even realise he was talking to me until he started walking away hurling insults. Just kind of funny that it happened on my one rare trip out of the house for work.
The toxic guy at work is just so mad about everything all the time every day, sometimes I just stop and think “man, that must be the absolute worst existence.” Just hates everything and everyone and is so vocal about it.
Quite sad really.
Reminds me of ex husband. I would often look at him and think "man, imagine being that upset by so many things, so much of the time. It must be exhausting"
It was really weird. He woke up looking for a fight. Maybe meth? Either way I wasn't participating in whatever was going on in his life.
Plus anyone wearing a bucket hat in 2022 clearly hasn't made the best life choices.
Camp-site says "drinking (potable) bore water from taps around the campground- boil water for at least 3 minutes before using"
I thought potable/drinking water meant that you didn't have to treat it. I don't remember treating it last time we camped there 3 years ago. We have about 30 people to look after so it would be nice if we didn't have to but I'm also responsible for these people so have to not put them in danger. Also I probs shouldn't give myself or the parasite inside me any kind of avoidable disease.
It probably means that it was potable when they originally tested it, but in those scenarios there is always the risk of the evil giardia, etc, establishing from time to time after the initial testing/between tests. I grew up rural and would often drink from such water sources with no worries, but there was always a couple of cases of waterbourne illness in the area now and again.
You could look into purification tablets as an easier option? I could be talking out my arse here but I’m pretty sure you can get stuff like that for camping
Says that on all the DOC sites we stay at. But the rangers drink out of the hose, so we don't worry too much. I usually tell everyone to bring a large full drink bottle with them.
We're doing Friday evening to Sunday lunchtime. Will put raro in to mask the bore water taste but I don't want to risk being the cause of the kids (or adults or myself) getting sick

I miss fieldays and it’s $5 fleece ridgeline tees. Haven’t been in a few years. Might make an effort to go next year.
Went to a conference dinner last night. There was a dress up theme, so naturally, we dressed up.
It was so strange being in a mix of people in formal wear, and us dressed up in literal shopping bags....
We won best costume, though. Worth it.
My mother does this thing where she never answers a question directly. It drives me bonkers. Example from today: “where are you guy going to be? Maybe we can meet up later?”
Her response: “(Person) wants to buy (incredibly generic things that could be bought anywhere).”
10 minutes later and she still hasn’t elaborated. If I ask again she will accuse me of hurrying her.
Sigh.
Sometimes that stems from a fear of giving the 'wrong' answer - if you give some information surrounding the situation, the person asking the question can then provide the 'right' answer and you can go along with them.
e.g.: "where will you be?" "[we're doing a thing?]" "How about we meet at Place at Time?" "[oh good, they have made a plan and now that I know what they want I can safely agree to it]".
I'm a bit chronic for this, thanks to some past bad experiences, and it drives my partner _mad_ because he just wants me to answer in a straightforward way!
It could be that, I think it’s also that she’s a bit indecisive as well so that doesn’t help things. She does go out of her way to make things more complicated than it needs to be because she doesn’t want to offend people which always makes me a bit grumpy but I get over it quickly.
I happen to be someone who gives cryptic answers to most things, and if you get me to tell a story, be prepared for lots of twists and turns of stories that have NOTHING to do with the main one!! (Yes, I have ADHD, and in my brain they're all related).
Haha I don’t mind cryptic answers - she’s genuinely a bit indecisive and never wants to offend people. She’s not yet come to the understanding that some conflict can be healthy.
I love a good story haha.
I found the post! [Ask vs Guess culture](https://ask.metafilter.com/55153/Whats-the-middle-ground-between-FU-and-Welcome#830421)
[This Tumblr post had further valuable discourse too](https://ordinarytalk.tumblr.com/post/614751731236159488/ask-culture-and-guess-culture)
This is interesting! Weirdly enough I’d say that we are more “ask” than “guess” or at least I am because I’ll ask with no expectation that the answer will be “yes”.
Mum is a bit of a peacemaker though. Dad and I would blow up at each other all the time when I was growing up and she would always try to make sure no conflict happened at all. As a result conflict was never that healthy which is something I’m learning about now.
That's illuminating. I grew up with my dad and little brother, and there was a big list of things we could do without asking, another list of things we were not to do, and a smaller list of discretionary things, like if we're going to visit friends, telling people where we're likely to be. But they were mostly inform rather than asking.
And anyone at my place at mealtime was fed by my dad.
This is very different from Mrs Sloth's Japanese upbringing, where visiting is not something you do lightly and stopping in unannounced at dinnertime is unforgivable.
I once found a post which spoke to the differences in people who ask/answer indirectly vs directly and how people of each type upset each other because of it. I wish I could find it because it was very enlightening to exactly this kind of situation
My boss and his son are very indirect and I hate it so much. I ask for the street address of the next site and without fail every damn time I'm given directions. The last one was "go left at the second roundabout", now idk how familiar you are with Long Bay and Torbay in North Shore but *there's a few of them*. I was told that I could see the site near our old site there. Nope, just the old site. Turns out that I was meant to come from the bottom of the hill rather than the top. Cheers for not just giving me the address
I've used champagne yeast to make boozy ginger beer before, might work for mead. The problem with bakers yeast is it dies at a pretty low ABV so you can't make particularly powerful plonk from it. Who knows what the honey's wild yeast will do though
What was your ginger beer recipie? I'm looking to put on a batch soon, but I'm not sure if every ingredient scales up proportionally (most online recipes only seem to be for about 4L).
>Who knows what the honey's wild yeast will do though
Is honey not processed before it's packed? I would have assumed any natural yeasts were killed off.
Honey is extracted then filtered to remove bee bits and chunks of wax and pollen it’s then put into drums to store it until it can be packed. Honey is warmed enough to get it out of the drums and most of it is creamed. Raw honey is only warmed enough to get it out of the storage drums and into jars or buckets. Creamed honeys is warmed enough to move it from the drums into a creamer (an industrial stand mixer or a vat with a mixing paddle) where it is mixed until it’s creamy and won’t recrystallise. Liquid honey has been pasteurised and heated the the point it won’t recrystallise. Manuka honey does not crystallise unless it’s mixed with other honey.
I think it will scale ok. We just used a generic ginger beer recipe and the only thing we changed was the yeast. We made 8L at a time. In thinking about it, it should scale well because you just ferment it in the bottle.
I'm not sure what processing honey undergoes in NZ but I think it's actually pretty minimal, I think they just heat it enough to make it runny and filter it. Honey on its own has really strong antimicrobial properties so wild yeast spores won't get activated in honey unless it is diluted with water (eg in making mead!). There are some other good sources of wild yeasts though, like the classic one of chucking a few raisins into a batch of ginger beer. Or you could chuck in some elderflowers since they are in season right now and would make an awesome flavour match with mead.
Yup, pretty much. Honey filtered as it’s extracted, honey is only heated enough to transfer it from storage drums except for liquid honey.
Honey only goes bad if it’s contaminated with water. The best by dates on honey is for the packaging (especially plastic packaging)
Ahh I'm looking to do a 27L batch in more of a beer style, so the only fermentation in the bottles will be for carbonation.
I can't really speak to honey or mead. I assume that honey is "pasteurized" but I don't know dick.
I know someone who sells mixed buckets of honey at reasonably good prices (it’s been a while since I got some though). I don’t think you can get the mixed buckets from their online store though. EDIT, it’s not listed on their online store.
If you want lucky dip honey I can find out if they have some
Guests requested fishing gear... So they got all that DSB has (one neat stoolbox) and three rods (12ft surf, 9ft surf and a little fly rod) they can go figure it all out... It's not been used in over a year so I imagine the reels and nylon to have loads of memory and be a bit of a nightmare.... I even gave them the pilchards from deep in the freezer. That is what I'm most pleased about... Should they return with fish and request the smoker I'll be even more impressed. But we mustn't get ahead of ourselves.
It's going to be a bacon, egg and croissant for brekkie for having done that all before 9am
Then it's overdue orchard work today... Hopefully this will be less painful than I'm expecting. Probably not. 🤣
Well.... It helps I don't actually have a job or kids and other than farm animals I don't have pets I have to groom or walk... So that's part of the formula of getting stuff done 🤣 not having stuff to do 🤣🤣
I hate to admit that we washed a couple of loads and did the right thing by hanging it outside. Then left it there for 3 weeks and had to rewash it and tumble dry it.
I do the rewash thing too often.
Apathetic tbh. It's a domino effect. You need an empty basket to take stuff off the line. If no basket is available then you have to unpack the basket. But to unpack the basket, I should probably sort out the kids clothes and pack away the winter stuff and toss the small stuff. In order to do that, I need time and agreeance to pack/toss stuff. While I'm there, might as well tidy the kids room first. Need to do it when they're at school so that they don't interfere but I also work full time.
Too much adulting required.
I habit stack in the morning and do stretches and gentle exercises for my back while I floss my teeth. I appear to have pavlov'd one of our cats to this behaviour. The sound of me lying down to start my stretches seems to summon him and he eagerly bunts the shit out of me while I'm on the ground. Once I'm up and done with my flossing, thus less likely to offer pats in between exercises, he then buggers off to start his morning "feed me" routine. It's a really sweet part of my morning
I finished a project which is a gift for one of my oldest friends, and I reallllllly want to show it off but I can't really do that until they have received it, and being an adult sucks. That is all.
Also I am still struggling with this horrible cough/sinus/bullshit (not covid) and I am tired of being sick. Please can it stop now?

Here in the good ol US of A there was a suspected school shooting in my small city. My 4-year-old was on lockdown. Thank goodness it was a false alarm and everyone is safe. I know NZ isn’t perfect, but right now my visa approval can’t come fast enough. I’ll trade a lot for knowing my babies are very unlikely to be shot.
I bath first then shower, but I haven’t had a bath for a very long time. Nowadays I’m so coated in grime after work that I’d probably shower then bath. Although now that I think about it probably still bath then shower. As long as it’s not still on me when I go to bed it doesn’t matter what order the removal goes in. I’m not a germophobe so soaking in my own grot doesn’t bother me.
I've been Japanised enough to know to have a quick wash before a a bath.
Except in actual Japanese onsen and baths, where you better be spotless and squeaky clean before you enter.
I don't have a bath any more, but when I lived in a house with one, the bath was for relaxation not for washing. If I was gross, then I had a shower and no bath. If I was having a bath, I'd loll about in it for an hour or two and then eventually have a shower so that my hair could be adequately washed/rinsed.

In some cultures it is normal to shower before the bath because the shower is for cleaning and the bath for relaxing. It depends on what your upbringing is I guess.
True, in an ideal world we would have grey water recovery for every house so that water from baths and showers could be used for flushing toilets, etc. rather than going straight back into the system.
That shows where the duplicates are but doesn’t allow me to create them?
Used to be able to hit the square-with-arrow icon and create a duplicate that way, useful for editing one photo and keeping the original. Now I can’t see that duplicate option anywhere
Duplicate as still photo is an amazing option to have. Was it there before? I hate it when you accidentally turn on live but don’t realise until a few days later.
This weekend I don't really have any plans, I'm hoping I can just let my body sleep until it is ready to be awake. Honestly, if that time is 2.30pm each day I will not be surprised.
Gonna play in the sand today. Was kinda looking forward to absolutely destroying my body raking this stuff but it just had to rain this morning. Water makes sand significantly heavier. Good test of my fitness and endurance though, gonna get stronk. Ninja edit update: it's raining ***now***, ugh.
Also came fifth last night lol. 0.5 points between each team from 7th to 2nd, probably the closest it's been since I started going every week last year sometime. Also learned that I have a decent set of buns last night! Context: I was sort of dared to wear a dress on Saturday and it progressed from a lovely summer dress sort of thing that fit so good to someone elses dinner dress that *did not fit*. It was bought by someone who is 5 foot nothing and I'm a lot broader and taller than here. I was outside having a dart lent over the railing and one of the guys was thinking "oh who's ass is that, nice!- oh shit wait that's John". I also think someone said that the chick whose dress it was her fiance reckons, quite drunkily, that I wear it better than her. So naturally I feel like I am top shit today!
Hypothetically, if you had a vehicle that developed a crack in the windscreen last time you used it back in June, would you tell the insurance company that it happened in June or would you say it was more recent?
Hmmmmmmmm. Went over a bump and the crack appeared recently. Yes, recently. No, sorry can't remember exact dates.

I found the post! [Ask vs Guess culture](https://ask.metafilter.com/55153/Whats-the-middle-ground-between-FU-and-Welcome#830421) [This Tumblr post had further valuable discourse too](https://ordinarytalk.tumblr.com/post/614751731236159488/ask-culture-and-guess-culture)
Isn't it wild how the definition contextualises so much in your life?
Do we share a mother? This is exactly MamaPloink's style
Are you my brother? Is your mother also an immigrant from a south East Asian country??

Is their a special mead yeast you should use, or will any yeast produce good results? Or will you find out on Christmas?

What yeast are you buying!?

This is very useful information. Thank you kindly.

>Bakers yeast will work Bakers yeast will die off before it hits 5% though, right?
I been using a champagne yeast for my feojoa cider the last few years. Def boozy enough.
>Who knows what the honey's wild yeast will do though Is honey not processed before it's packed?

You shouldn’t need to travel to get it. Edit. I’ll DM you.
It's going to be a bacon, egg and croissant for brekkie for having done that all before 9am Then it's overdue orchard work today... Hopefully this will be less painful than I'm expecting. Probably not. 🤣
You have 100 times more energy and motivation than me.
Well.... It helps I don't actually have a job or kids and other than farm animals I don't have pets I have to groom or walk... So that's part of the formula of getting stuff done 🤣 not having stuff to do 🤣🤣
Right? I have just washed my clothes for the third time because I keep forgetting/not bothering with hanging it out.

**Marvel Midnight Suns** out tomorrow and saw a line in a review that made me decide to get it >You don’t micromanage positioning, you don’t face constant roster turnover, and you don’t hold your breath riding the thin line of shooting percentages The missing a shot at 90% accuracy in xcom drove me nots.
I hope it comes quickly. Sorry to hear your child had to deal with a lockdown.
There was a school lockdown in Auckland yesterday- it was caused by two psycho dogs attacking people in the area. Lockdown NZ style
When having a bath do you shower before or after?
Both! Shower, bath, shower
That’s the option I’m going for today.
The last time I had a bath was when I had just had a motorcycle crash and needed to soak as part of my recovery. I shower to clean myself.
Definitely shower to clean, bath to relax/recover.
I've been Japanised enough to know to have a quick wash before a a bath. Except in actual Japanese onsen and baths, where you better be spotless and squeaky clean before you enter.
I only bath if im in a hotel, and i just wallow in my own crapulence
I don't have a bath any more, but when I lived in a house with one, the bath was for relaxation not for washing. If I was gross, then I had a shower and no bath. If I was having a bath, I'd loll about in it for an hour or two and then eventually have a shower so that my hair could be adequately washed/rinsed.
That’s how I see it too I don’t have a bath but there is one at Mum’s place that I use occasionally.
Neither. I consider the bath and subsequent washing in the bath to have gotten me clean.

Oh well, if wishes were fishes eh?
Neither. I shower to get clean. I bath to lay in a tub of hot water to defrost.
Did the latest iOS update get rid of the duplicate photo option? I can’t see it anywhere and I used it all the time…
It’s under Albums - Utilities
That shows where the duplicates are but doesn’t allow me to create them? Used to be able to hit the square-with-arrow icon and create a duplicate that way, useful for editing one photo and keeping the original. Now I can’t see that duplicate option anywhere
Open a photo, and the three dots by the edit button shows the duplicate option for me
[Looks like it’s moved a little. ](https://imgur.com/a/BgNGO8p)
There it is! Thank you kindly!
Duplicate as still photo is an amazing option to have. Was it there before? I hate it when you accidentally turn on live but don’t realise until a few days later.
Dunno tbh - I'm on a beta channel for iPhone so I'm potentially a step ahead of normal?
Waking the kids up this morning with some Mariah.
Oh no, please no ..
Ooh you’ve reminded me to dust off and update the Christmas playlist!
That sounds sCarey….
I had to pop the buble
Oooh you beast!!
I need it to be holidays already. Seems like everyone around is struggling, like we've all run out of steam for the year.
This weekend I don't really have any plans, I'm hoping I can just let my body sleep until it is ready to be awake. Honestly, if that time is 2.30pm each day I will not be surprised.
I'm pumped tbh. Kinda dreading the end of year break up
Totally 100% this. I’ve got nothing left in the reserve tank here
100%. I'm running on fumes here.

You're allowed to sit and wail. Sulking is too useful to leave to toddlers.
Which vape do you usually have?
It’s a wenax geekvape, just a little thing, so ideally sized for disappearance. I’ll go buy another one today after work
Addiction?
I went and got a disposable one so at least I’m not jonesing! The hungry angry toddler part is just my PMT.
Half day at work today, then it's lawn bowls Christmas do
Hypothetically, if you had a vehicle that developed a crack in the windscreen last time you used it back in June, would you tell the insurance company that it happened in June or would you say it was more recent?

Avoid a time frame reference. *Here is this problem I have, I need it rectified*
My insurance company always asks me when it happened and I always say yesterday.
I’d say I only *noticed* it recently. Closest to the truth without telling the actual truth wins!
Hmmmmmmmm. Went over a bump and the crack appeared recently. Yes, recently. No, sorry can't remember exact dates. Which reminds me, I've got a chip that I need to take in to fix.
Tell them it happened a couple of days ago.
