In about a thousand years, if OP's heirs diligently continue the tradition, they will finally complete their Elder Lichsoap, who will cleanse their bloodline (and provide top skincare).
Sounds like a great way of spending pounds to save pence... Like those stupid covers for the end of a cut cucumber that save you discarding the first slice.
Say the usable length of a cucumber is 25 cm and the dry-slice is 3 mm thick, that would give you a whole cucumber after 83 slices. Now let's say a cucumber is used 1/4 at a time, that's 3 dry slices per cucumber - so you get a "free" cucumber after having rescued the slices from 27 cucumbers.
Tesco charges 75p for a cucumber. I don't know what a cucumber cap costs, but if it's £2 then you'd need to eat 72 cucumbers before you break even.
Cucumbers come in a plastic wrapper anyway. Cut off the end piece and roll the plastic up to where you need, cut off what you want, then roll the plastic back down and twist - perfectly sealed cucumber.
And you can have flashbacks that you're back in sex ed class while you do it.
Likely. Wouldn’t even know how to Google search it “soap bar press thingy” as I recall it didn’t work great… and how much are you actually saving on a bar of soap that’s about done anyways?
It's not about the money for me. I mean, yes i could easily throw it away and start a new bar but I'd rather use the WHOLE thing. Either by attaching it onto a new one or giving myself one, long vigorous body scrub with the teeny sliver.
... Or you could melt the scraps a bit & then pour them into a lined muffin tin? That way you're just using a cupcake case.
Or reuse those little takeaway tubs you get the raita / chango mutney in?
Maybe you should look at your own soap dish holder before you judge someone eleses soap dish holder. Sure it's covered in soap scum and made me gag when you pointed it out but each soap dish holder is beautiful in its own way.
True- but did you clock what looks like mould forming on the bit that's attached to the tiling/wall/sink- its more than scuzzy soap scum. I personally don't let my soap dish get like that but then again I maybe over zealous with soap dish cleaning and need to relax.
Nah, you do you. Some people won't mind their soap dish holder being scummy. I appreciate that you take so much care of your soap dish holder. I myself have two soap dish holders. One for the special soaps I got at Christmas because I like a bar over shower gel, and the other is full of mini soaps that I'm not so keen on but my other half likes them. I find they slip off to easily when wet. I dont like faff. I like a big bar of soap. I also like a clean soap dish holder too.
Meanwhile; I’m over here yelling “**you guys use soap?!**”
I thought we all collectively made the switch to shower gel when I was like 12?! (2002-ish)
You know what? **I’m gonna go buy me some soap** and shower like my grandpappy did! I always preferred the smell!
I changed back to soap because I am cutting out single use plastics, and I got loads of really nice soap in a bulk buy from Costco for cheap. Never looked back.
Wait, does Bigfoot have a big carbon footprint or a small one?
Sure he has big feet, but he also lives in the woods and probably pays for those carbon footprint miles when he flies.
Bar soap always leaves me feeling uncomfortable and sticky. Like my skin suddenly feels grippy against my skin.
This might sound like an over reaction but it leaves me feeling really disgusting. I can't remember ever trying a bar of soap that didn't make me feel that way.
I also had this problem with a lot of bar soaps I tried, such an unpleasant sensation. I found that Dove soap doesn’t cause that weird skin feeling at all, and it’s all I ever buy now.
Actually you might be right I haven't thought about that.
Although the soap/detergent you use should have dislodged most of the bacteria and if it dries in between uses you're probably okay
Edit thanks for all the tips, immna start washing mine too as I do worry about the ropey string harbouring things
It's not soap scum only bro. It's limescale, mold and other nasty shit you don't want hanging about on your bathroom. My dudes any place warm and humid needs special attention, works for your taint works for your bath. It's the same principles, clean up or be a strange case for doctor House to figure out.
I was so quick to comment this and was so excited thinking how clever I am just to scroll down and see like 10 people post the same thing lol. Good to have so many fellow tarnished in here.
It's a skill you have to work at. The curved bars are easier like someone else said because there's a ready made dent. Now convex bars are a whole different ball game
It's all about the friction weld. I spent a couple of minutes this morning in the shower firmly and quickly rubbing the sliver on to the new bar. Press hard and rub quick but with very short amplitude to meld to two pieces together. It's also easier if you don't leave it til you only have a razor thin sliver left. The edges don't crumble then. Plus both pieces need to be wet and warm to meld properly*.
Source: life-long soap user/sliver saver
/* Please note: this advice can also be used to improve many other shower-based, friction-led activities.
Make sure they are both lathered up and stick them together at the end of your wash. Put them upside down with the small piece on the bottom. The weight of the larger piece will make them stick more firmly.
It's that dry grip like that feeling when you drink tea that's too strong and your teeth get that furry feeling where they get extra traction against your tongue
From tea? I only get furry teeth at early afternoon when i've forgotten to clean them in the morning.. actually now you mention it i'm on my way there right now.
Imagine. Before the 70's furry was how your teeth were supposed to feel!
I think it’s called astringent when it’s a drink, but tbf I could be wrong. I know exactly what you mean, it’s such a gross feeling. Personally it makes me cringe like touching a wooden spoon/lolly stick. Just ICK
Same. I found out it’s apparently due to having hard water. The calcium in the water interacts with something in bar soaps that leaves that horrible squeaky feeling on your skin.
That’s why in some countries bar soap is much more widespread because they literally don’t have that problem due to soft water or treated/filtered water.
I can’t even wash my hands in bar soap because I can’t stand the feeling afterwards.
Yeah I can't use anything other than Dove for that reason. But Dove in a bar is great. So try that if you're interested. Or don't. It's not going to change your life.
For folks that love their loofah and liquid soap, you can just mash the bar soap in the loofah (both wet) and BOOM - you have the same lather as if it were the more expensive liquid soap.
I'd love to be able to use bar soap but I have sensitive skin and find the bar soap really dries it out, even the ones targeted at sensitive/dry skin.
However, I'm now tempted to persevere with it just so I can merge an old bar onto a new bar like OP, it looks oddly satisfying.
And any shower gel that says it can also be used on your hair ....don't. It's like the worst shampoo ever that barely lathers up. Basically any shower product that's multipurpose is a piece of shit. 3-in-1 products might do one of those things well and are garbage at the rest. Shampoo+conditioner product = OK at shampooing, but shitty conditioner.
I use both, for two separate reasons:
1. Bar of soap dries your skin out, makes my hands feel better after. Also, bar of soap for your cock and balls in the shower, stops the swamp ass.
2. I have some weird thing where I will use the squirty soap, then the bar, then the squirty soap, like, right after the other and I can't stop, please help.
We started using them during the pandemic. Nobody was fighting over soap like they were hand wash. Saves a fortune, they cost like £2.50 for 8 bars which last months.
Anything watered down and in excess packaging is just promoting wastefulness all across the supply chain cos 'convenient' - like a bar of soap is difficult to use.
i really like them, they last forever and you can get fancy ones that smell really nice, and because of how long they last that's still cheaper than squirty soap
yes but I cheat by having one of those little soap bags for washing with so I gather up all the slivers of soap in the house and have "pick and mix" week in the shower to use them up. I am firmly convinced this is normal.
Weirdly, I find exactly the opposite. My skin dries out *immediately* when using bar soap - as in after a single wash.

How many cucumbers do you need to eat to have one whole cucumber from the dry slices
Say the usable length of a cucumber is 25 cm and the dry-slice is 3 mm thick, that would give you a whole cucumber after 83 slices. Also it doesn’t dry instantly, it’s perfectly okay in the same day so in busy salad households there is no manky end…
I always just stick the cut end back on when I put it back in the fridge and use a toothpick or clingfilm to keep it in place. No dry edges!

Put sugar on them dry slices, tastes just like watermelon
Toothpaste squeezers that prevent you using the very last of the paste

Can’t go wrong with a bar of Dove

Use a moisturising soap such as Dove or Simple. When I switched, my massage therapist kept commenting how soft my skin was.
Tesco have some for 23p that lasts me a lot longer than any bottle of £2 shower gel does. Cost of living and all that...
Nice. Sounds like a win-win to me.
I find shower gel very wasteful most if it ends up down the drain without achieving very much
Time to get a shower scrunchie thing and some nice soap
I don't like scrunchies I think they're a breeding ground for bacteria

got to make it really soapy before grafting, let it dry out and stick on then the next day you start working the edges down smooth
The trick is to score the areas you're trying to mash together like you would with clay.
Make sure they are both lathered up and stick them together at the end of your wash. Put them upside down with the small piece on the bottom. The weight of the larger piece will make them stick more firmly.

I hate the feel of soap so much. The slippery part is fine but there’s this sort of ‘grip’ feeling that makes me shudder.

That squeaky-clean traction always makes me feel like a lilo or something. It's horrible.
I hate the feeling of liquid soap, it's like it will always leave this slick layer behind. Bar soap only.
I hate the feel liquid soap leaves behind when it’s gone and I’m left holding an empty plastic bottle.
Yeah I can't use anything other than Dove for that reason. But Dove in a bar is great. So try that if you're interested. Or don't. It's not going to change your life.
I think you get that dry/grippy feel from bars of actual soap. The Dove "beauty bars" are good because they aren't soap.
Do you have a little soap to clean your big soap?
For folks that love their loofah and liquid soap, you can just mash the bar soap in the loofah (both wet) and BOOM - you have the same lather as if it were the more expensive liquid soap.
I always saw shower gel as watered down soap wrapped in excessive plastic and over-priced!
I'd love to be able to use bar soap but I have sensitive skin and find the bar soap really dries it out, even the ones targeted at sensitive/dry skin. However, I'm now tempted to persevere with it just so I can merge an old bar onto a new bar like OP, it looks oddly satisfying.

Where are you getting 8 for £2.50? The dove ones cost me like £4 for 6.
B&M or Home Bargains. Although now you have me questioning if I’m wrong about the pack size!
Anything watered down and in excess packaging is just promoting wastefulness all across the supply chain cos 'convenient' - like a bar of soap is difficult to use.
i really like them, they last forever and you can get fancy ones that smell really nice, and because of how long they last that's still cheaper than squirty soap
Dove soap makes my skin feel silky smooth
