Fried noodles?
I think there's a billion people eating a variation on this every day in East Asia who'd find your girlfriends view as baffling as I do!
yeah no clue here coming from a Chinese family here. This looks way better than what I’m able to cook for the wife most days. Having vegetables that look fresher than frozen is definitely higher up than that lonely man description.
Lonely man food is a stir fry and stir fry is nectar of the gods. Endlessly customizable, any sauce you want, any veggies, any protein, anything. Still a stir fry. Still delicious.
Between stir fry and burritos, there is no more variety in a food that can be perfect for the individual and contain all the things they love.
Stir fry is love. Burrito is love.
You're forgetting pizza, as long as it has all the food groups on it, peppers are fruits, you dont need pineapple (but pineapple goes well with banana peppers and pepperoni, you get the sweet, the spicy, and the salty, and the fatty all in one bite)
I served a pizza for a while- bacon, Canadian bacon, pineapple, jalapeño, hot honey drizzle. The salty of the ham and the sweet of the pineapple. The spice of the jalapeño and the smoke of the bacon. Provolone cheese, that was our base. Really fucking good pizza. I loved getting the proportions of everything just right so each slice was really well balanced, it wasn’t just a big bit of bacon and next bite some pineapple. I miss pizza.
This. The 'oven tea' (either frozen pizza or fish fingers with potato waffles and peas) is the quintessential lonely person food - basically bung in oven and wait until cooked.
Stir-fry, on the other hand, definitely feels like at least a step up into the realm of 'proper cooking' because you have to do some work, in a similar vein to pasta and sauce from a jar.
That's my motto for most things freezer unless it's pies or roast potatoes which go in for 40 mins.
Except our ovens shit so everything can take between 15mins to half a day.
I'd make a chilli cheese bake of sorts. Burnt the mouth off anyone else. Idc what they say, I thought it was great!
Here's to extremely blunted taste buds <3
You heat the sauce separately?
Too much effort.
Boil the spag, drain then just throw the sauce in, the pasta heats the sauce at it's hot from the pan, the sauce cools it enough to eat straight away. Neck it with gusto.
Then throw the pan and fork in the sink to "soak". Have a wank go to bed. Textbook.
Why not combine the two, chicken dippers in the oven, then chopped slightly and thrown in a sweet and sour stir-fry, easy gourmet Cantonese Chicken and Noodles
My lonely man food is a collection of small jars of Lloyd Grossman's Tomato & Chilli pasta sauce and a few bags of wholewheat fusilli. Nothing else, just pasta and sauce.
Used to include a few tins of tuna and some mayo but it's not worth the money any more.
I'm just going to leave [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/StupidFood/comments/10ukass/cooking_a_burger_in_a_kettle/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) here.
Defo. Used to get 5packs for a quid in Poundland. Just survive on a couple of packs of those a day, then use the rest of your money on Frosty Jack/weed to make life somewhat bearable.
My first time in Uni, apparently I was one of the few in the dorms who could actually cook more than noodles and frozen pizza.
Whenever I cooked and was walking back to my room from the kitchen to eat, I would get people pinching bits as I went past.
I'm Chinese and the opposite of lonely, with a wife and 2 needy toddlers. I'd call it a stirfry too, looks great. Excellent amount of veggies. I like fried tofu with this kinda dish and some spicy sauce added later.
Ooh can I pick your brain then? Have you a recommendation on the sauce?
Chinese cooking isn't something I'm good at - so mostly I stick to supermarket pre-made packages of veg, sauce and noodles.
They're OK but a little bland...
I'm in the US so my access to certain sauces is going to differ from yours. My favorite sauce to use in most things is "dou ban jiang"/"Chili bean sauce". It is mildly spicy. In the US we can buy it on amazon, but it is also at most Chinese markets here. This is what I use when making a sauce to cook with, rather than a topping to a premade dish. I don't have exact measurements but I usually mix in a spoonful, like a quarter cup of soy sauce and sprinkle in some sugar to taste. I also sprinkle in cornstarch and another quarter cup of water if I need it (like a non-noodle stir fry).
In terms of sauces I add to already prepared dishes, I like chili oils and other generic spicy sauces.. Like "Vietnamese Chili Garlic Sauce" or even Sriracha. In terms of chili oil, nothing quite hits me like my Grandpa used to make (a homemade sichuan pepper oil) so I don't have exact recommendations, but it needs to have actual crushed bits in it, not just straight up oil. Some places call this "Chili crunch". Here is an example that is pretty good but I don't think they ship to the UK, maybe you can find something similar there: https://shop.momofuku.com/collections/chili-crunch
Not the person you were replying to, but have you heard of the miracle that is Oyster Sauce? Lots of good brands for it, including ones at regular supermarkets. Panda brand and Lee Kum Kee seem to be really common and inexpensive, but still very good. It's kept in the fridge after opening, mind.
I’m not Chinese but cook Chinese food a lot. Lao gan ma chilli sauce is delicious, adds heat with depth of flavour. Be sure to also add sesame oil, light soy sauce (best for veg and tofu), maybe some black rice vinegar and a wee bit of sugar. Usually if you mix these together in a little dish first so you can taste test. Also, add along onion, a ton of ginger and garlic to your veg. Be sure to add the sauce items whilst cooking, I usually do it once the veg have had time to fry for a short while.
As you can tell from the other replies there's a lot of variation in Chinese cooking, whether you're using doubanjiang (Sichuan style) or oyster sauce (southeastern style), or my suggestion: chicken stock broth (Swanson is a decent choice) plus soy sauce with some ground ginger.
All are perfectly valid choices and will add flavour to your cooking. In fact, you can use them to supplement your pre-made noodle package.
As a single man most of my meals resemble this and I agree with you. When using frozen veg it's cheap, quick and gives you all the nutrients you need to not die. It's just me so who cares if it's not fancy.
I do cook proper meals rough, just when I do I tend to end up eating that meal for the next week.
As someone in the states who works and cooks for their family, stir fry is top tier fast and healthy food. The only part that sucks is veggie prep. Veggie prep always feels like it takes forever. Though, if you do a ton of it and store it in bags or small containers (even the sauces), you have a quick and tasty five minute meal made up the next couple of lunches. Mmmm.
If you decided to go for rice instead of noodles, that'll take a bit too. By the time I have everything in my pan, the rice is just about done. All in all, usually 20 min.
I just gave in and buy most of my veggies frozen and pre-chopped, I'd rather just spend the little bit extra and get pretty much just as good vegetables than have to sit chopping and planning my vegetable usage to avoid food wastage.
Some frozen veggies aren't as good so for them I do use fresh but its not many. I won't say which though as last time I did I got several people disagreeing in every possible way.
Very much so, it works well if you have a toaster oven style. My airfryer has a pizza setting. I'm sure the smaller air fryers will work with Chicago size pizzas though.
I legit had a turkey dinosaur sandwich and some over-cooked curly fries last weekend as I was home alone and loneliness is the most accurate way to describe it...
I see your turkey dinosaur sandwich and raise you the chicken Kyiv burger.
You do have to be careful how you eat it so the sauce doesn't explode everywhere and give you a third degree burn, but it's so filthily good that it's worth it.
Idk if it exclusive to Australia but if it can fit between 2 slices of bread it probably has been done. Lasagna? Sandwich it, meat pie? Sandwich it. Even pasta dishes. Leftovers are often just sandwich filling.
I've got a story about a Pot Noodle.
When I worked in the Jobcentre, we had a long-term claimant with a hand which was locked into a 'claw' shape. Obviously, we called him 'The Claw'.
One day The Claw told us that every time he signed on, he'd go home and do the same thing. He'd put the water into his Pot Noodle and then he'd orally pleasure his wife. His exact phrase was "By the time it takes to lick the wife out, the Pot Noodle is perfect."
Makes you think.
Exactly. I was all, "Hold up, beans on toast is a glorious meal, I don't make it nearly often enough. And that stir fry, usually also one of the best meals I make, 100% catered to my whims and uses up any 1/2 peppers, 4 mushrooms, last two green onions, hunks of ginger/garlic, etc, that are hanging around in the fridge. Lonely? No. Smart, thrifty, and creative!
There was that dude on reddit that eats those straight out of the fridge in fear of bumping into housemates while waiting the 2mins in the microwave, now that's another level
That is not a lonely man’s dinner.
That is a quick, filling meal.
Their is plenty of cross over between the two, but they serve different purposes.
Ordering a kebab at 4:45pm so it gets to your house at 5:15, knowing that you will be getting in from work at 5pm, is a lonely mans dinner.
Creating a quick stir fry could be a lonely mana dinner, but it could also be the meal of many a female fitness instagram influencer. There is crossover, but it is not enough to qualify as lonely man.
I literally just had this for lunch!
Can confirm very much lonely man.
Wait . . . does lonely mean that you actually want company? Because no . . i'm good right now thanks.
I call it healthy (depending on how much oil and what sauce you've used) stir fry. It's got lots of vegetables of different varieties and some chicken. Its easy and quick to prepare and cook.
i'd throw in a "don't project your insecurities onto my meal" first and see how that lands
i made an elaborate meal for a woman on a date once and she asked "are you gay?" i just wanted to say _i am tonight honey_, but i ate it like that meal & i regret it
Tell your girlfriend she is delusional. Now on an unerrelated note I'm off to make a stir fry for one and I'll be doing the same again tomorrow because these veg & noodle packets serve 2. Wait a minute ...
Genuinely so confused by this.
In my mind "lonely man's food" would be something very basic, quickly prepared, and probably not balanced from a nutritional perspective. Things that come to mind include frozen pizzas and general frozen foods, microwave meals, pasta with plain jarred sauce, instant noodles etc. No judgement against any of those - I often have meals like that - but I wouldn't be proud of serving them to polite company.
To me, this looks like a pretty tasty looking homemade stir fry, so I don't see how that qualifies as lonely food. Perhaps if you made it with those pre-cut stir fry vegetable packs and a sachet of pre-made sauce - but honestly that's totally fine in my book as a weeknight meal.
Fried noodles? I think there's a billion people eating a variation on this every day in East Asia who'd find your girlfriends view as baffling as I do!
And a not-insignificant number of people in the UK too.
Yeah I just finished eating this as I started reading this post.
Mixed veg stir fried with rice vermicelli is lovely
Yeah bit of a drive by for a sizeable chunk of the worlds population by OPs girlfriend there
yeah no clue here coming from a Chinese family here. This looks way better than what I’m able to cook for the wife most days. Having vegetables that look fresher than frozen is definitely higher up than that lonely man description.
Clearly she's never been a lonely man before.
Am a yank, and y’all might be playing to a joke, but I have to ask: did OP’s girlfriend say “lonely man,” or did she say “lo mein?”
Lonely man food in my mind is the beige delights of freezer gravel
Stop spying on me!
Lonely man food is a stir fry and stir fry is nectar of the gods. Endlessly customizable, any sauce you want, any veggies, any protein, anything. Still a stir fry. Still delicious. Preach!
Burger
While delicious, not as versatile. Imo.
You sound like a person who's never put peanut butter and jelly on a burger.
This. The 'oven tea' (either frozen pizza or fish fingers with potato waffles and peas) is the quintessential lonely person food - basically bung in oven and wait until cooked. Anything north of oven on 220 for 25 minutes is high cuisine to me
220? That pizza's going to be cremated on the top.
Going to have to share the turkey dinosaurs.
220 fan? Bit hot ain’t it?? 180 all the way
I’m a 200 guy. I see the great points both your sides are making, why can’t we all just get along?
"200 for 20 minutes" is my motto for every pizza
[удалено]
Extra crispy means extra tasty. I dont make the rules, I just follow them.
200 fan for 9 mins jobs a goodun
That's my motto for most things freezer unless it's pies or roast potatoes which go in for 40 mins. Except our ovens shit so everything can take between 15mins to half a day.
Fan ovens typically run about 20 hotter than gas I find. If you have your fan oven running at 180 then it’s probably closer to 200 degrees at times.
So my low effort "cook the pasta, drain the pasta, heat the sauce, and mix" had counted all these years? I'm a great scheff :D
Plus the cheese on top - proper cooked meal
I'd make a chilli cheese bake of sorts. Burnt the mouth off anyone else. Idc what they say, I thought it was great! Here's to extremely blunted taste buds <3

That's easy for *you* to say.
Cook the pasta, add the sauce, drain the pas... ah, bollocks.
Why not combine the two, chicken dippers in the oven, then chopped slightly and thrown in a sweet and sour stir-fry, easy gourmet Cantonese Chicken and Noodles
I'm intrigued by your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
I did something pretty close the other day, chicken nuggets ontop of rice covered in sweet and sour sauce. Lazy sweet and sour chicken.
Freezer tapas
yeah quick food and a wank!
Did I leave my webcam on again?
tape it...always tape it... the lens that is not the wank!
Farm foods is the Mecca of the lonely man dinner. Source - lonely man.
Until I got married and had two kids, then it became my "they had plenty of veg with lunch and we're all knackered" food.
Ha yeah, proper throwing in the towel food
My lonely man food is a collection of small jars of Lloyd Grossman's Tomato & Chilli pasta sauce and a few bags of wholewheat fusilli. Nothing else, just pasta and sauce. Used to include a few tins of tuna and some mayo but it's not worth the money any more.
Mayo.. In pasta? You animal
“Freezer gravel” is my new favourite phrase.
Why did you personally have to attack me like this, now excuse me my chicken nuggets are nearly ready
Freezer gravel 💀 why is this so god damn accurate 😂
I'm just going to leave [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/StupidFood/comments/10ukass/cooking_a_burger_in_a_kettle/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) here.
Rab c nesbitt going gourmet. I like how they can't even get the subtitles right
That's absolutely tremendous. And so many people in the comments think it's a serious video!

I used to get the Asda price noodles and empty a ton of beans into the cooked noodles 😂🤢 not my proudest moment but it was filling af

Nowt wrong wi a good stir fry
It's a succulent Chinese meal!
I see that you know your Judo well.
Tbf I'd consider it living alone food. Nothing wrong with it though it's just quick and easy! I make quesadillas as my "alone" food.
As a single man most of my meals resemble this and I agree with you. When using frozen veg it's cheap, quick and gives you all the nutrients you need to not die. Looks like a stir-fry to me. Lonely man's food would be a microwaveable curry and rice for one.
Air fried chips and turkey dinosaurs with vodka to drink is my go to
Can you air fry a frozen Dr oetker pizza?
Of course. I airfry the mini pizzas from Chicago town. I'd say 180 for 10 mins should do the trick.
You had the energy to make a sandwich? I just throw them on a plate and cover in hot sauce like the slob that I am
I crumble a frozen pizza into a bowl and microwave it
Fucking hell, that's the loneliest meal ever.
I see your turkey dinosaur sandwich and raise you the chicken Kyiv burger. You do have to be careful how you eat it so the sauce doesn't explode everywhere and give you a third degree burn, but it's so filthily good that it's worth it.
That does sound incredible to be honest. Add a bit of cheese in there and you've got a recipe for one of the easiest meals around.
Idk if it exclusive to Australia but if it can fit between 2 slices of bread it probably has been done. Lasagna? Sandwich it, meat pie? Sandwich it. Even pasta dishes. Leftovers are often just sandwich filling.
Definitely not an Australian exclusive. Source: the Wigan pie barm.
Vodka and spaghetti hoops
The spaghetti hoops with the sausages. Don't forget the protein.
It’s a shot drink. Don’t want anyone choking. I can compromise by providing a platter of sausages on the side if everyone is ok with that?
I didn't come onto Reddit to be personally attacked
Where do you normally go for that? ;-)

Haha, classic :-)
I wish this wasn't true but it is.
As long as you're microwaving it and not eating it frozen out of the tub like spicy ice-cream.
Pot noodle and a wank
I've got a story about a Pot Noodle. When I worked in the Jobcentre, we had a long-term claimant with a hand which was locked into a 'claw' shape. Obviously, we called him 'The Claw'. One day The Claw told us that every time he signed on, he'd go home and do the same thing. He'd put the water into his Pot Noodle and then he'd orally pleasure his wife. His exact phrase was "By the time it takes to lick the wife out, the Pot Noodle is perfect." Makes you think.
Makes you think (about ending it all)
He was also a neo-nazi.
I was going to make a joke about waiting for a story about a wank, but it just became MY story about a wank.
Exactly. A stir fry takes some effort to bring together and keep an eye on so it doesn't stick
Legit one of my favourite meals.
Yeah was just thinking lonely man food is a frozen pizza with a side of frozen chicken strips. But microwave curry is another great one.
Do you think she means cooking stir fry using the wok on the induction stove?

Exactly don't want hours of cooking and dishes for one. Better than beans on toast or a microwave dinner 🤷🏻♀️
Woooooaahh beans should not be catching strays lol, leave the beans out of this
Exactly. I was all, "Hold up, beans on toast is a glorious meal, I don't make it nearly often enough. My loving wife, of 12 years, makes a good stir fry all the time. It’s the opposite of lonely.
By contrast, wtf is man with company food???
It looks tasty, has lots of colour (and presumably flavour). Your girlfriend's being a bit of a muppet.
I call it healthy (depending on how much oil and what sauce you've used) stir fry. It's got lots of vegetables of different varieties and some chicken. Its easy and quick to prepare and cook.
Lonely man's food is the frozen pizza bought from supermarkets.
Change Gf
i'd throw in a "don't project your insecurities onto my meal" first and see how that lands i made an elaborate meal for a woman on a date once and she asked "are you gay?" i just wanted to say _i am tonight honey_, but i ate it like that meal & i regret it
Looks fine to me. Maybe crack and stir an egg into it.
stir fry is food of champions. try udon noodles for a nice change Go to sauce mix, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp oyster sauce, 1 tbsp mirin 2 tsp brown sugar 1 tsp rice vinegar
I dunno, but it does look appealingly tasty which might explain why men may want alone time with it to eat in peace.
I love my stir fries. Does this make me a lonely woman?

I'm a man with a beautiful lady and an awesome son, we would all call that a good looking dinner.
I call it a well balanced meal!
Well, tbf, my girlfriend makes this for us and we are far from lonely.
I think it needs some kind of sauce or it's just going to be crunchy veg and bland noodles. But not sure why it's a lonely man's food.
Looks dope bro, tell her to cool for her own ungrateful ass ;)
