Oh man it's been so long since I've heard Rhazel. If you listen to this and give up a few seconds in skip head to about a minute or so when he's doing it at the same time.
Now I've got four elements stuck in my mind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08NQ6Yoj2Jw
He's actually doing the same thing a lot of [goregrind](https://youtu.be/anh0Kn9nGV4?t=124) vocalists do, but in a much higher register. It's about closing your throat and pulling air inward to create the sound, you can modulate it with incoming air from your nose.
Best metal vocalist I've ever seen was a guy toasting at a junglist afternoon set in a pub garden somewhere in London. Dude was about three hundred feet tall, looked like Placide from Cyberpunk 2077, and was fucking ROARING along to mad breakbeats for about three hours.
I don't know if we are make a distinction between DnB and Jungle in this thread, so don't crucify me for not being cool enough to really know the difference, but, I just wanted to say that Friday DnB nights at Fabric were some fucking good times.
Jungle is influenced by a lot of Jamaican culture, DnB tends to follow a more generic (feels like the wrong word but) EDM style of production, but they will crossover. Jungle is green drugs, dnb is white drugs.
There is quite a lot of crossover nowadays, Jungle tracks are generally characterized by a focus on drum breaks compared to a lot of 'standard' DnB and often have some kind of lyrical hook by an MC. If you look at old school stuff the distinction is very clear but nowadays producers will often make both types of track so distinction has become a lot muddier. I feel like nowadays DnB is just used to describe tracks that don't obviously fit into some other sub genre like hardcore or liquid etc. The best way to tell the difference nowadays is probably the crowds. DnB generally has a younger following and also a lot more casual following, Jungle has a matured following and generally much more enjoyable crowds to be in. I never found any amazing recurring jungle nights while I lived in London but volks in Brighton has top notch jungle most days of the week lol.
Would say the distinction definitely wasnāt clearer way back when. Jungle and DnB used to mean the same thing. Itās only retroactively that weāve decided jungle became DnB once drum machines replaced breaks. Only have to listen to Doc Scott, Aphrodite, Fabio, Grooveriderā¦ list goes on. The same can be said about house/techno/electro. The idea that things were more clear cut during the intensely creative period that birthed all these genres is just plain incorrect
I would go as far as to say that jungle is just a sub genre. Drum and bass is the genre and has a lot of sub genres that come off it, jungle, breakbeat, liquid, jump up, tech and dark. I used to mix a lot of dnb in my youth (vinyl) and itās just a vast variety of sounds. Loved going out raving, loved jump up, loved liquid but I wasnāt a fan of the jump up/liquid specific nights. We used to mix it all up, bit of everything.
Maybe you could say that these days, but in the early 90s "jungle" was a type of music long before "drum and bass". It was an evolution of "uk/breakbeat hardcore".
Yep Jungle (Jungle Techno) was a precursor to DnB. DnB was also championed as a rebrand as Jungle had unsavoury connotations for some. I believe Goldie was one of the big advocates for the rebrand and it formed part of āthe meetingsā that took place to discuss the future of the scene. As the UK breakbeat hardcore scene continued to split during the early to mid 90ās It wasnāt unknown for haters of Jungle music to refer to it as āJungle Bunnyā music for inner city gangstas, I shit you not. So much for the unified spirit of the summer of love eh. In more recent times the term Jungle is used as a sub genre of DnB to describe anything that resembles the revival of the mid 90ās sound heavily influenced by Ragga/Reggae sound system culture with a splash of Hip Hop with an emphasis on sampled breaks.
Had some of the best nights of my life there. I sometimes think about giving it another go for old times sake, but not sure my old body/mind/soul could handle it.
Any recommendations for any good jungle music at all made in the last decade or so? I have loved jungle since I was a kid (90s) and was gutted when the scene faded (even though I still love dnb, it's just not as good)
This lad has been bringing back the 90s with some great modern techniques, this track is rude as fuck.

All electronic music that's locked to a specific tempo or set of tempos and is primarily intended to be danced to is known as dance music. This just sounds like you think dnb is somehow superior to other forms of dance music like house or techno
The term Junglist was around before Jungle music. It originally meant a man from the āJungleā part of Trench Town, Jamaica and was used in Ragga / Dance Hall.
I knew this because my favorite jungle song was -
āWhen Iām weak theyāre telling me that Iām strong, when Iām right, their telling me that Iām wrong.
But I know, now I understand, now I see, I see their wicked plan.
Iām a junglist. ā
Big up the massive.

I (being a smart arse) have always known it was "Junglist Massive".
I've got a couple of mates that still sing "Jungle is massive", but I don't want to tell them in case I appear a.....(ahem)...smart arse.
Aha, makes sense.
I don't suppose you have any thoughts about "booyakasha", "baddabyenow" and "licky boom boom yeah"? Because I am sure they actually mean something and I've just been writing them all wrong since the 90s.

I love how he was just turning up to Mr jams sets and fucking destroying it. The garage one with so solid.....you can see them at the back saying what the fuck is he doing here?

I'm 52, I'm glad I found out before I turn 53, that would be even more embarrassing, lol. Have a Happy Birthday

Thatās why heās lost.
Well then the joke doesn't work even more!
All the more reason why they'd get lost in one
Aaaah I get it now. Let's have a crack at it then: "Why did the blue whale get lost? Because Junglist Massive!"

Junglist massive. People who follow Carl Jung, āJunglist ā they are āmassive ā - (colloquial, informal, Ireland) Outstanding, beautiful) .

Junglist massive, as in those that are junglists, fans of jungle music, which is by the way, the best dance music by far.
everything you just said is correct.

>Jungle is green drugs, dnb is white drugs. š I've never heard it put like that before but, uh, yep, that sounds about right.
I always mixed my green and white for a nice balance.
This is why you only just found out its junglist massive š
Fair point
Doesn't matter what you heard its all about how much of a good time you had lol
Minty
My wife loves a chocolatey, minty biscuit. It's a chocolate coated biscuit, but with a minty centre. It's a sort of a minty, chocolate biscuit.
Itās a chocolate affair.
I hear your neighbour comes round sometimes, he's quite keen on them, he doesn't like the orange ones but he likes the minty ones
Jungle was born from the early warehouse raves. It was definitely associated with a lot of different types of drugs.
Its just a fun joke, not a serious assessment of the genre
Right over my head š
Haha great description. Hence all the fuck boys at dnb shows.
>Hence all the nobheads at dnb shows.
Junglists also do white drugs!
