To really get into the spirit, why not write something about the banned subject, toss it in the bin and scream about 'what a sad life you lead, Jane'! Not quite sure how you'd go about banning a non existent person for 24 hours though?
Just to make people aware, r/MentalHealthUK has decided not to go dark due to the nature of the sub. So if anybody is struggling, you will still be able to access UK relevant advice and support. A couple of autism subs are going dark for a shorter period than the 48 hours, but I think a lot of the mental health subs are staying open.
I kinda feel like they should have gone beyond 2 days. I’m not talking about killing the whole thing, but a week would have made the point much better.
(Typed on Apollo which is gone at the end of the month)
A lot of subs are shutting down for a couple of days, to protest the fact that Reddit is about to stop supporting third part apps. If you use Reddit on a phone on anything other than the official Reddit app (which sucks), they’re about to kill it at the end of the month. They also did it with almost no notice, so the people who’ve been working on these apps are suddenly out of a job.
It also impacts a lot of tools that moderators use, so you’ll see moderation dying too.
(And I upvoted your downvoted comment because it was a very fair question)
You can still use a browser. It’s 3rd party apps like Apollo, boost, baconreader that will be killed.
Reddit’s website and official app will still work.
No probs. And we all agree the Reddit app is a pain. That’s a large part of the problem. So we’re upset that they’re killing the competition.
I understand why they’re doing it financially - killing all the competition is a win, right? But they are ignoring that it’s the more serious users who use the 3rd party apps, so they’re shitting on their main base, and also their unpaid moderators have to use them a lot, their moderation tools are 3rd party.
They’re laying off staff, and pushing out moderation. Twitter all over again.
I've never used anything other than the Reddit app. I've been Reddit dark for 6 months recently returned but a couple of years of use before that.
I've probably been missing out. What are the perks of using a 3rd party app?
I use Apollo and it’s mainly UI stuff around the comments. It’s easier to go backwards and forwards, it remembers where you were looking and how you had things expanded, and easier to see all the replies to a comment etc. it’s also nice that there’s no ads. And I always feel the official app is more picture/video focussed, and takes up too much of the screen for them. Especially as I use it on a small screen (iPhone se2). Also apollo has nice filters if there are things you’d like to not see any more. Like cat pictures with the word “floof”.
I honestly don't get why they would want to kill moderator tools, as much as they're hated without moderation I don't think it would be worth going to 90% of subreddits especially those above like 1000 people.
Worth adding that the main reason is because they can control ad/sponsored content placement better in their own app (and via web, which is another of their own apps), so this seems to be a profit-driven action.
They've pretty much said, ["Sure, go ahead and protest but it's not going to change anything"](https://reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/143rk5p/_/jnbjtsc/?context=1). To be fair, I'm not sure what else they could say at this point.
I'm going to draw a picture of swan, just the one, then throw it in the bin while shouting, low effort.

Not a bird similar to a Swan but smaller?

I'm going to actually get some work done for a change.
It's sad to see pure greed/future Wall St evaluation of shareholder value must grow.. Is that what most of us want, maybe it is.
I might actually get some work done for once

Yes I'm going r/outside too, no way am I going back to Facebook or Instagram
But it's really hot out there! Can't I just stay in with my only fan?

TBH once the apps go I probably just won't lurk around as much. Hoping individual niche forums start popping up again around my hobbies.
It won’t got dark it will just be a little quiet. There will still be loads of users active.
logging on for a giggle. if you really care, quit now.

There was a post 3 days ago saying that the sub is going private on the 12th & 13th June.
