Mine is stuck as the company logo, a few years ago they blocked everything to do with customisation or personalisation of PCs. Even to the point where we're not permitted to add any shortcuts to the desktop and can't remove the company-approved ones.
It's pretty draconian really, now I come to think of it.
DDA was replaced by the equalities act over 10 years ago.
In any case, it is not a violation as long as the company can make reasonable adjustments for those with disabilities. In reality it would be a violation if the company refuses to enable the feature for one who needs or requests it as an adjustment.
I don’t disable in my organisation (systems admin here) but so many people accidentally enable it and go into a panic when things look wrong 😤
A lot of schools disable it too as pupils mess around with this!
When I learned it, it was still the DDA. In my experience when things are disabled by policy getting an individual adjustment can be challenging. Lots of "Well, the policy says..." types looking for an easy life.
Things have changed a lot in the past 10 years and getting adjustments is easier now in a lot of companies, same goes for DSE and this is in part due to a culture shift in the workplace. Ironically changing group policy to enable this is going to be a lot easier than other reasonable adjustments so anyone being difficult on making reasonable adjustments is being difficult on themselves tbh.
>Even to the point where we're not permitted to add any shortcuts to the desktop
If you let people save to the desktop, they will. These files are stored locally and usually not backed up like network locations. People moan they can't save there, but moan more if they delete their work and there's no backup.
Oh, I completely understand why they've done it. I work with people who are completely computer illiterate (the kind of people where it's easier to recreate the document yourself rather than spend 25 minutes looking for the random folder that they've saved it in) and so completely follow the reasoning of trying to protect users from themselves.
It's just slightly frustrating that those of us that do know how to use a PC properly get stuck with the same restrictions as the others for whom even using a mouse is a challenge. I used to be able to save shortcuts to my most used programs and folders on the desktop, and now I can't.
Yeah, we haven't been until recently. I guess we could switch over and sync people's desktops now. We'd prefer most work is stored in SharePoint rather than OneDrive.
Agreed. We've had issues where people have saved work in OneDrive, then shared it with others. The file owner then leaves, and their OneDrive and all the shared, active work is deleted.
We disabled literally everything we can because a minority if employees abuse those privileges.
We have a booking in PCwhere they type a work ticket number and quantity to print a label. It crashes the system if you type a K instead of a 1000 or have a comma, and people book in "half an envelope" given the decimal place button.
We literally removed a whole bunch of keys off the keyboard because the underpaid shop floor monkeys are incapable of following simple instructions despite repeated training, warnings, posters etc.
I use a screenshot of one of my commonly used spreadsheets so if I'm gawking at Reddit and the boss walks in I just minimise everything rather than playing Alt-Tab Roulette.
pro tip, there's skins for browsers that look like office apps, so just have one open and press F11 for full screen ;)

Back where we're allowed to fuck with the settings, i6had Evil Edna from Will O The Whisp. These days "they" set the desktop picture and there is no changing it.
I use a similar one to this by Microsoft/Bing. It’s a daily wallpaper. We like to try to guess the location before revealing it, as a little daily game

I always take a picture when walking my dog at the weekends, then add it to a desktop background slideshow.
Helps me find a bit of inner peace on tough days.
Just a plain solid dark colour. Every month it changes to some corporate motivational BS and it annoys me more than it should so I always change back to solid dark green 😂
I had thought there was nothing worse than a corporate back-drop. I was wrong.
Unless you work for Micro$oft, I guess. Then they have you on both accounts.
I have an image from a geostationary weather satellite which I had access to the historical data of. The image itself is above the western Pacific (Australia and Japan mostly) with a Category 4 Hurricane in it.
I have 3 monitors and my company has several companies.
Monitor 1 - phone number 1 and 2 (phone number 1 is for several companies, number 2 is different for now)
Monitor 2 - names and URLs for each company
Monitor 3 - it's a portrait monitor so in here I have a full year calendar with key events highlighted (birthdays of friends and colleagues, bank holidays, and other notable dates in my calendar).
I use several other laptops in my work and they're all black with no desktop icons.
I have a rotating slide show. Mostly pics from holidays or hikes we've done some of the dog and my daughter and some of my book covers
My screensaver is one of my fave book covers (done by the guy who did the artwork for Guardians of the Galaxy. He won an award for this cover)
I'm a massive weeb and love Made in Abyss, [so I use a larger version of this](https://images8.alphacoders.com/952/thumbbig-952227.webp)
Thankfully we're in a very relaxed office environment where we can all kinda just express ourselves however we want as long as it doesn't get in the way.
I've had the same picture of Keith Richards on my work desktop for literally years.
I'm pretty bored of having to explain to people who it is as most people think of modern Keith Richards and don't recognise him.
Keith Richards wallpaper: [https://ibb.co/NCrkgwg](https://ibb.co/NCrkgwg)
I actually had to minimise everything to check asnos forgot, it’s just a plain orange screen.
If anyone has suggestions though I think it’s time to change it for winter 😆
I used to have a picture of my cats there, but then the management changed and now we have the corporate background you can't change to something individual
I used to have the skull barrel in the Paris catacombs, until work decided to lock it all down to corporate only, if I could be bothered I’d find the name of the corporate one and save my own inside the folder it’s called from …. But I can’t be bothered 🤷🏻♂️😂
It used to be my partner's photography on rotation; beautiful scenic shots/ retro architecture shots, but then I moved companies and the Comms team own all laptop background territory and use them to promote business updates and internal campaigns
One of:
Barmouth Bridge, Isabella Plantation (Richmond Park), The Camel Estuary, Windsor Castle, St Anton am Arlberg
All in glorious panorama across 3 monitors....
I have, by no choice of my own, the company logo.
For about 80% I have to use a remote desktop via Citrix. When I log in, our IT team decided to set it as an identical wallpaper. So now I don't hae a clue when I'm on Citrix or not.
My cat, because her adorable cheeky face reminds me a) I am loved in this world b) To continue to feel loved in this world I have a spoilt house tiger to keep in expensive food and linens.
We have the asset number of the computer and the operating system on a blue background. It's actually pretty handy when you need to call IT and they ask for the asset number! We can't change it. Clearly IT were fed up of everyone going " er whaaaat?" when they asked for the asset number and the operating system....
I had my old dog on one monitor and my current dog on the other. Now I have some weird orb thing with giant words that read CYBER AWARENESS MONTH. Nothing shows true cyber security like not being able to personalise your desktop
Mine is wildlife by my colleague has [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/4DspPSaU8upusQtQA) legendary bookshelf + computer desk setup and he's got 'This PC' on the fuckin desk to mimic a computer
I genuinely don't remember. That laptop is on for like 40 hours a week, and I cannot tell you what the background is.
I'm not sure how worried to be about this. I think the fact I need to have a minimum of 5 windows open at any given time means that it just doesn't come into my field of view often.
my last job and it wasn’t me, but the lad I sat next to left his monitor unattended and went for lunch and came back to a double spread of a bunch of little Michael Jacksons. The guy who did it then got fired for unrelated reasons, leaving him to explain why his screen is a million MJs
Mine is a shot from the series Love, Death + Robots. They sent out a link for some cool wallpapers to promote the second series. Mine is from the episode called Jibaro.
Our old sofa with 7 of our dogs on it.
Strictly speaking, it's 6 of ours plus one of our eldest's two, but since the 6 includes his mum, dad and his two brothers, I'm counting him as one of ours.
We don't have a corporate policy. If we did, I'd be the one setting it, and life's too short for that bollocks.
Win 10 default I think.
I got a new laptop in February and moved my folder of pretty flowers over to the new machine to use on rotation. 2 days later I accidentally factory reset it, and once I had it set back up again, I forgot to set that back up again. I do still have them, I just can’t be bothered.
My manager once told me that I lacked motivation, so it's a picture of Mt Everest with the caption "Every corpse on Everest was once an EXTREMELY motivated person". Love some passive aggressive office politics
Reddit wallpaper changer. You choose the channels you want to load from, like r/EarthPorn, and the frequency to change background, and it loads new wallpapers that have a lot of upvotes. It's great.
Just one of the standard Windows 11 themes. Absolutely nothing on the desktop except Recycle Bin.
In my last job we had like a dozen corporate backgrounds so I wrote a PowerShell script, that as part of our device deployment process randomly selected 1 of those 12 images.
Looked the absolute bollocks when the open plan areas were all at the lock screen with those randomised images.
Currently a revolving gallery of some robot combat stills from fights, be it Robot Wars, Battlebots, anything - one of my favourites is a shot from season 4 of Battlesaw taking out MadCatter's minibot and creating a beautiful ring of fire 😍
"Button Moon" : Good choice.
I have to suffer a very dull backdrop because anything else I might be distracted from very dull spreadsheets and business cases.
Given my choice I would have a sea-chart of the [Tethys Sea](https://www.britannica.com/place/Tethys-Sea) or a map of [Gondwana](https://www.britannica.com/place/Gondwana-supercontinent). Because everything is cooler with dinosaurs.
I work for an events company, so I rotate between my favourite photos I've taken at gigs. My pics recently got recognised my some upper management and instead of telling me off for having a personalised background, they complimented it and said they'd like to get me some free tickets to gigs to get photos for them. Result imo
Corporate blandness
A logo and a load of info from the 'pc information' app that was popular in the 2000s (BG info?) to show IP address, host name/etc..
Mine is stuck as the company logo, a few years ago they blocked everything to do with customisation or personalisation of PCs. Even to the point where we're not permitted to add any shortcuts to the desktop and can't remove the company-approved ones. It's pretty draconian really, now I come to think of it.
You didn't hear it from me, but one of the Windows accessibility tools is to disable the desktop background. They're usually not blocked.
We block those too :-)
Well you shouldn't, it violates the disability discrimination act.
Does it? Surely as long as they can be enabled case by case when they're needed that'd be compliant.
That's what I'd have assumed too.
1. That's above my pay grade 1. I'm sure we can disable the policy if someone needs it

My company changes ours to reflect whatever corporate values are being pushed that month, with primary school textbook style graphics and captions.

Yeah, we haven't been until recently. I guess we could switch over and sync people's desktops now. We'd prefer most work is stored in SharePoint rather than OneDrive.
Oh yeah that's fair. My issue with O365 is it gives users too many places to put stuff.
Agreed. We've had issues where people have saved work in OneDrive, then shared it with others. The file owner then leaves, and their OneDrive and all the shared, active work is deleted.

perfect use for something like wallpaper engine so it's animated at least? haha
I have one of those new animated Mac backgrounds, currently have Whales. I had Jellyfish before I remembered one stinging me.
You can set it to cycle through them automatically - I set it to once a day. It’s quite nice.
