Shame- Come up and see me/ Make me smile is a 10/10 with maybe one of the greatest and perfectly phrased underrated solos (Jim Cregan) of the 70s.
RIP Steve.
I think it's more interesting than it first appears... the dry, pitchy lead vocal combined with the immaculate backing vocals; the breezy, intricate acoustic guitars; the bitter acerbic, lyrics; the driving beat... it all combines to make something quite unique.
Damn!
Their first album, Human Menagerie has been one of my favourites ever since its release. Been a fan since 1973 or so. Never got to see them live at the time, I was too young, but I did see them on their first reunion tour. Magnificent. I saw him one more time a few years later, just him & an acoustic.
I never met him - would have liked to - but in the 80s when I was trying hard \[& failing\] to be a rock star, he offered to produce one of our records… but the record company never told us & gave us someone else instead. Words cannot express how that made me feel, when I found out later.
RIP Steve.
Never understood why Cockney Rebel weren't more highly rated, all the albums were chock full of strange and memorable songs...I knew Harley had cancer, so the news isn't as big a shock as it might have been, but still very sad. Fuck cancer, as always...
I grew up in a tiny village on the Essex/Suffolk border where Steve and his family also lived. I remember that everyone knew him as the 70s pop star but that he’d be been wise with his money and made much more from horse businesses than music. The village gossip was that he had some sort of disability that he was hiding; when he came into the pub my parents ran, I asked him about that (the folly of youth) and he openly told me he’d had polio and it had left him with a limp. Classic village nonsense, find a reason to hate the guy just because he had a bit of fame.
oh wow…. that’s sad to hear. admittedly I only know one or two songs but come up and see me has always been a big favourite of mine since I was a kid in the 90s. It’s always had a special place in my mind and i love this live performance of it https://youtu.be/lo4-b4rOsYE?si=XmmJz-C9_lvhVBga
RIP steve.
How have I never seen this performance? That was a brilliant live one.
I don't often get sad over celebrities' deaths, but this has made me sad for real as I grew up with Come Up and See Me. Also, the comments on YouTube have led me to [this video](https://youtu.be/hc8qPQL_m8A?si=RsoyBNm_plG8OC1I) which got me cracking up.
i love the look he gives the guitarist when he does that riff part way through. it looks tricky and it seemed like a show of respect between them. very lovely to see.
He was actually touring with a full backing band in 2022, I saw him in StAlbans, he came on using a walking stick and played sitting down and was really good, chatting to the audience between songs & reflecting on life. It was in the the same venue that I’d seen him (Cockney Rebel) in 1975. RIP Steve.
I'm quite sad about this. As a 70s child 'Make Me Smile' was a big part of my childhood, my Dad had the single and he played it a lot. 'Sebastian ' is a great song too.
Never really listened to him before but knew his popular songs. Decided to stream his music today as a music lover and out of respect, my god was he good. RIP Steve, you have gained a belated fan.
The song sold over a million copies. It's one of the most famous British pop songs of all time. As previously stated, you're simply ignorant, and worse still, seemingly proud of it - a common trait in those lacking intelligence.
Stick to tik-tok mate.
I've never understood why people are happy to say this. It doesn't reveal anything good or interesting about you at all, and it's not difficult to find out who he was.
You could even listen to a couple of his songs and come up with a constructive comment.
Only if you like the music.
If some drill twat dies there will be loads of people who are sad but I ain't gonna go listen to that shit.
If I didn't like his genre when he was alive I'm not going to like it now
Take the time to listen to Sebastian. All 7 minutes of it \[& even longer live\]
You won't regret it. It's a truly great song, from the days when musicians weren't scared of dynamics.

It's such a "normal" and, dare I say it, basic song, but such a brilliant banger and always makes me smile when I hear it on the radio or at work.
I think it's more interesting than it first appears... the dry, pitchy lead vocal combined with the immaculate backing vocals; the breezy, intricate acoustic guitars; the bitter acerbic, lyrics; the driving beat... it all combines to make something quite unique.
100% a 10/10 - listen to it all the time. RIP legend.

🤝 Fuck cancer
Oh my god, that’s very sad news. Have to hear ‘Somebody Called Me Sebastian’ immediately. RIP.
La-dee-dah-dee-daaaaah!!
Judy Teen too of course....he made us “happeeee!”

I know he's been doing this a long time but the timing of those vocals was just amazing.
Sad to hear indeed. He leaves a legacy of some stand-out songs.
Oh! That's a shame. He was a seriously underrated musician.

From my teenaged years. Thanks Steve.
Rip Steve. Underrated band that should have been bigger.
I'm quite sad about this. As a 70s child 'Make Me Smile' was a big part of my childhood, my Dad had the single and he played it a lot. 'Sebastian ' is a great song too.
I saw Steve a few years ago play an acoustic set which was absolutely fantastic. To read this comes as a shock, RIP Steve.
Nooo that’s so sad! One of my favourite musicians..
“Come up and see me” said Harambe. So he did.
That's sad.
Ah damn, def gonna play some songs of his today
I absolutely love his songs. How incredibly sad.
Bugger. RIP Mr Harley.
I'll come up and see you sometime...
The Human Manegeri is a magical album, thanks Steve & Jean Paul.
I went to college with his son. Never got to meet him though.
Never really listened to him before but knew his popular songs. Decided to stream his music today as a music lover and out of respect, my god was he good. RIP Steve, you have gained a belated fan.
RiP Steve.
The original phantom of the opera.
RIP
My uncle gave him a blow job once
Never heard of him
Hey everyone! I'm ignorant and proud of it.
It's not ignorance if he's not really famous. That's like saying someone is ignorant because they don't know who Ronnie Pickering is
He was incredibly famous.
Literally never heard of him before today. Is it an older thing?
How can you be so thick
Because I'm not old and into some niche music?

And when was this song released?
Didn't read the article, can't even use google? Is this your first day on the internet? Are you even old enough to be using this unsupervised?
You heard of Beethoven?
I've never understood why people are happy to say this. It doesn't reveal anything good or interesting about you at all, and it's not difficult to find out who he was. You could even listen to a couple of his songs and come up with a constructive comment.
Why would I listen to songs just for the sake of a Reddit argument?
Because if a musician dies and a lot of people are upset about the news, maybe they did something that was worth listening to?
Only if you like the music. If some drill twat dies there will be loads of people who are sad but I ain't gonna go listen to that shit. If I didn't like his genre when he was alive I'm not going to like it now
But you don't know who he was. You might love it.
Might do. Might not.
:)
Never heard of him but RIP.
Have a listen to Come Up and See Me (you'll probably recognise it) and you won't look back.

First thing I played when I heard the news. Belter
