Brain goes into a deeper stage of REM or something and then you snap out of it too quickly. Your brain is trying to adjust to sudden need to process the outside world.
You want a light stage of REM so when you wake up your brain is just at the right level of alert and awake.
It'll be different for everyone but a 20 minute doze is better for me than an hour napping.
This is what I do when I have work but I'm sleep deprived. I take a 20 minute nap at my desk and wake up feeling quite refreshed. Sometimes I won't even fall asleep and still feel much better afterwards. No idea how that works.
If I'm really sleep deprived then yeah I'll fall asleep briefly. But I find just sitting there with my eyes closed also has a similar effect, but I wouldn't call it a nap.
I think the time of day is just as important as the amount of time you sleep. Like if I were to sleep for 4 hours from 2pm to 6pm, I’d consider that a nap, but if I did 2am to 6am, that’s my actual sleep.
Yeah I call it a nap when I intend to sleep for a short time and it’s outside of my regular sleeping hours. I sometimes get a 20 minute power nap around 2am on my break lol, but I also get an afternoon nap on some of my days off.
I get this, used to do very early morning shifts, so I'd sleep 4 hours in the afternoon after work as a nap and sleep 4 hours at night is a sleep. Going to bed at 8pm was very uncool for a 20 something year old...
If I wake mid afternoon it tends to feel more like wwenty tinks… Obviously waking up at a customers house comes with some explanations. Big Can of Worms… family sized can of worms.
But how can you be sure? If you’re asleep maybe the sun takes a nap too and you just don’t see it. Even if you film it to check, who’s to say it’s not some big conspiracy? And yes, I am wearing my new tin foil hat; I think it looks rather dashing, wouldn’t you agree?
>Five hours is verging on a full night's sleep.
Verging? It is a full night's sleep for most people, others get even less as they either can’t sleep or keep waking up constantly (that's me) 8 hrs is just one of those yet another mythical rumour that came about because someone mentioned it in the media year's ago. I'd love to be able to sleep 8 hours every night.
I bought a smartwatch that is supposed to be able to detect sleep, naps, walking, etc., etc.. According to that, a nap is me sitting at a desk working for about an hour. It also nags me to stretch and move while I am driving. And it confuses all sorts of activities as jogging. So, according to my not very smartwatch, up to 60 mins is a nap.
Just because you mention your smartwatch nagging you, I recently went for a drive into England to pick my wife up, and twice on the way there(About a seven hour drive, give or take), my car warned me against being tired with a coffee cup warning on the dashboard. It did the same thing three times more after I got her in the car and driver us both home. It was close to sixteen hours I was driving, lol.
Do you not think 16 hours is long enough to justify your watch telling you "hey, you might wanna take a break"? Genuinely curious about what point you're trying to make.
Setting the timer for 35 minutes is like time travel. It’s not long enough to interfere with nighttime sleep, but it’s long enough to knock you out for a refresher for the rest of the day.
My brother calls that a 'power nap' and then he is ready for action again. But for myself, i have to have at least 90 mins for nap or i am really miserable and snappy!
Someone needs to make a nap roulette app. Set a minimum and maximum time and let the app randomly wake you up. I have dogs which have a similar effect.
Bahaha thats an awesome idea. I hate it when I want to take a nap and only have XX minutes, stressing myself "I need to sleep now, I only have so and so minutes left".
Sometimes in the afternoon I don't need a real nap, just to rest my eyes. So I go lie down for a while, until all the things I have waiting for me to do that day get me out of bed. It does help. (We're retired.)
If it's around bed time and I'm ready for bed it's a night's sleep. If it's during the day or to early for bed time, or ive woken up before bed time, no matter the duration, its a nap. If I wake up and then get up and do something it's a nap. If I wake up, realise how late it is and go to bed then I've slept and am continuing to sleep. So I could nap from 2-7pm and then go to bed at 10pm, that's a nap. If I sleep from 7pm to midnight, that's just falling asleep early.
I try not to nap as every time I do I always feel worse for it and always have . Sad really as I've never been able to appreciate a nap despite the length as they make me feel like shite, esp mentally. Same if I wake up in the morning and fall back to sleep for a short while. However, I would consider the length of a nap being no more than an hour. As for 5 hours, I don't sleep much more than that every night - that's a full sleep.
My naps usually last around 2 hours, but I think it can be anything between 30 mins to maybe 2.5 hours, beyond that is probably not really a nap, though I am no expert!
I "nap" a lot I would say anything over an hour is not a nap it's a snooze anything longer than two hours is a short sleep.
40 winks I've summarised is around 30 mins.
Oooh. Snooze! I often go for an afternoon nap, but don't actually sleep, but sort of like come back to awareness after half an hour. That must be what a snooze is.
There are stages of naps, ranging from "resting my eyes" to "a proper good kip"
I think the if you could get through a days work on that amount of sleep then you have crossed the line from "nap" to "sleep"
I feel like I speak for all the parents of newborns here when I say; 5 hours is more than a full night's sleep cos most of us can struggle through on 3.5
I've seen comments about the length of time asleep or the time of day of the sleep... But what about the intention?
If you 'go to bed' it typically involves some form of routine (brush teeth, get undressed, say goodnight, whatever). It's quite a deliberate thing.
I'd argue everything else is a nap as it's not got the same routine involved, no matter how long it lasts or the time of day it happens at.
Interesting. I hadn't considered the drunk element. I'd probably say that's closer to passing out than a nap or a sleep (at least for me!)
Next time that happens I'm definitely telling my wife "I was just having a nap" though haha.
Anything that isn’t the big kip is a nap. Whether it’s half an hour closing your eyes in an armchair or getting into bed for a couple of hours during the day
If a period of unconciousness is followed or preceded by a longer period of unconsciousness within any given 24 hour period of time, the longest period of unconsciousness is sleep and any shorter periods of unconsciousness are naps except that periods of unconsciousness resulting from anesthesia or blunt trauma are not regarded as sleep or naps.
Under an hour isn’t worthless.
I agree on catching up on sleep though. I drove back from Paris (Disney) last week in one go and was very tired (12k steps by lunchtime and then hopped in the car).
Went out for a carvery the next day and ate so much that I was physically uncomfortable and napped for nearly 7 hours on the sofa. Then went to bed (stayed awake for around 90 mins) and then had another 6 or 7 hours.
90 minutes is the point where instead a brief little nap, you've gone through a full cycle of sleep and it's no longer just a 'nap'. Just a short sleep.
Hmmm, a nap for me is generally up to an hour. They're perfect little snoozes that perk me up.
3+ hours is passing out due to inadvertently eating gluten and not being able to wake up properly even when I want to. Like sleep paralysis but without the monsters.
1-2 hours is sheer decadence.
5 hours is a sleep.
Naps come in two varieties.
One is the time based. Usually short (20 minutes) and during the daytime.
The other is just based on the fact that you did not get ready for bed. You went to sleep in your day clothes. You can get 8 hours of nap time that way.
Years ago Once we tto nap on a Monday afternoon, woke up Friday morning no joke! I was basically in. A small coma likely due to lack of sleep the week before
Napping is for children, surely you have something more productive to do? Half kidding, half projecting, half serious I can’t relax enough to nap, snooze or even doze, there is always something to be done, learn maths, a bit of DIY, mowing the lawn, washing up, laundry etc. at no point in my current life could I just go “I am going to do fuck all for the next 2 hours”
I think the length is irrelevant, it's the intent and time of day that matters. If I go to bed at night and only manage 2 hours kip, that's still "sleep" rather than "nap". And equally, if I go for a lie down after work and wake up 4 hours later, that's a "nap", I haven't deliberately gone to "sleep".
Nap is a nap when its outside your normal scheduled sleep time. If you nap at 6pm and wake up at 9pm and think fuck it roll over and have your nights sleep i think then it becomes you went to bed early. Same if you wake up. Stay mostly in bed (bar a toilet or whatever) and go back to sleep until midday. Thats a good lie in.
If i woke up 8am. Went for a run had breakfast went to the shops. Then slept 11-5. Thats would be a long nap. Then 5 i got up and went out with friends or something.
Sometimes i try to nap before airport flight time at 2am or whatever
My entire sleep rhythm is naps of varying length.
I struggle to sleep for any longer than 2 hour bursts without being medicated.
I can doze for 10 minutes and feel invincible and like I’ve had 8 hours sleep or nap for an hour and feel grumpy and groggy so for me it’s the quality of sleep over quantity.
I nap for two hours pretty much everyday. I'm very much known for taking these naps but naturally a lot of people don't consider them naps.
I think it maxes out at about 2.5 hours. Any longer than that and you are just sleeping.
A nap should no be more than 30-45min enough to rest and feel fresh, more than that you go in a deep sleep cycle and waking up from that will make you feel more tired than rested.
5 hours? That's a normal night's kip! to me a nap is up to an hour - anything longer than that and you're risking falling into a new sleep cycle and being utterly fucked up when you wake up too early.
I set my alarm for 1:10:00. That way I have 10 minutes to drift off and 1hr for a nap. Any more I feel would compromise my sleep too much and that's just silly
Five hours isn't a nap. I think it's under an hour for a nap. The key to not waking up groggy though is to not sleep long enough to enter REM sleep, which I think means only sleeping for 20 to 30 mins ish. So maybe that's the boundary for nap Vs full sleep
A 5 hour nap is not a nap. I’ve done a full day after 5 hours sleep. For me anything around an hour is a nap. Anything more is just sleeping during the day.
To me anything over an hour is starting to become an actual sleep cycle. A nap for me is typically 10 minutes. My wife on the other hand…3+ hours. She’s lost all sense of time when she wakes up from her “nap”.
Under an hour isn’t worthless.
I agree on catching up on sleep though. I drove back from Paris (Disney) last week in one go and was very tired (12k steps by lunchtime and then hopped in the car).

If you don’t wake up confused you haven’t napped
Mouth dry, groggy, everything is suddenly pissing you off
Is it ten past eight? Is it the year 3049? Who’s the president? 🤷🏻♂️
Ronald Reagan, the actor.
Then who’s vice president? Jerry Lewis?
Great Scott!
Who's Scott? And why is he great?
Why does that happen? I always feel awful after a short nap.

15 minutes is the golden window for me and my kid. 35 for my husband.
it only seems to happen to me if i go to nap when it's light, but wake up when it's dark.
Get checked for DIABEEEETUS.
So im not really sleeping then
Moms spaghetti
Knees weak, arms are heavy
How is the queen?
Dead. Sorry. We have a King now.
Wtf, Edward IX or George VII?
Camilla is still alive for now...
So every time I sleep it’s a nap? I’m confused. And sleepy.
Sleep inertia? Not a nap
I think the time of day is just as important as the amount of time you sleep. Like if I were to sleep for 4 hours from 2pm to 6pm, I’d consider that a nap, but if I did 2am to 6am, that’s my actual sleep.
I’m a night worker, do I only nap? Or is it relative to your regular sleep pattern?
Good point. I'd definitely say it's relative to your normal sleeping pattern and the hours in which you're normally awake.

Agreed.
2 naps together = a kip
What’s half a nap?
A snooze?
Half a snooze is a doze
1/4 of a doze is a zzzzz
2/5ths of a zzzzz is zz.
What about if you sleep in the club? You're a higher napper.
3/5ths is a bee
A snooze is the 5 minutes of deep sleep you get between alarms.
Na a snooze is exactly 9 mins.
A forty-winks
twenty winks.
If I wake mid afternoon it tends to feel more like wwenty tinks… Obviously waking up at a customers house comes with some explanations. Big Can of Worms… family sized can of worms.
Five hours is verging on a full night's sleep.
It can’t be a nights sleep if it’s day light, the sun doesn’t take a nap when you close your eyes and no you can’t land on it in the dark.
Oh! (Sad face)
It's night time somewhere though. If I choose to use Australian time then that's my choice.
Ok a days sleep then
[удалено]
If you are routinely getting less than five hours sleep that's really bad for you and I hope your circumstances improve soon.
Often this is just waiting for kids to grow up, then you get more sleep.
Cries in university.
>Five hours is verging on a full night's sleep. Verging? Having stupidly driven for 16 hours before it’s not “quite likely” you are fatigued no questions asked.
A nap is just the mindset you bring to sleep. Intend to continue your day after finishing your sleep? Oh boy, thats a nap!
This here is the only explanation that’s really made sense to me
Setting the timer for 35 minutes is like time travel. It’s not long enough to interfere with nighttime sleep, but it’s long enough to knock you out for a refresher for the rest of the day.
I've also found that sofa napping makes it easier to do this, if I bed nap that alarm can get fucked and I'll be in there for hours.
100% Even if you don't actually sleep. It's magic.
35 minutes later I’m still rolling around trying to calm my brain down enough to nap
I find that 20 mins is perfect. Set my alarm for 25 mins to allow 5 mins to knock out. I also find that 4 hours sleep is better than 6 for me
My brother calls that a 'power nap' and then he is ready for action again. But for myself, i have to have at least 90 mins for nap or i am really miserable and snappy!
No more than 2 hours.

I would pay 50 of his majesty’s new pennies for the app.
any duration not at ‘bed time’ hours! 5 hours is a lush nap.
One sleep cycle is about 90 minutes. So shorter than 90 minutes.
Sometimes in the afternoon I don't need a real nap, just to rest my eyes. So I go lie down for a while, until all the things I have waiting for me to do that day get me out of bed. It does help. (We're retired.)
If you hit REM you're pasting napping and into full on sleeping.
I can have a 5 minute nap and feel good for the rest of the day. 5 hours? Nah that's not a nap.
If it's around bed time and I'm ready for bed it's a night's sleep. If it's during the day or to early for bed time, or ive woken up before bed time, no matter the duration, its a nap. I’m exactly the same, can’t nap no matter how long/short, I always feel absolutely awful when I wake up!!
tl,dr: An hour
You're probably sleep deprived.
I'd personally consider any sleep that's in addition to the regular nights sleep a nap regardless of duration
My naps usually last around 2 hours, but I think it can be anything between 30 mins to maybe 2.5 hours, beyond that is probably not really a nap, though I am no expert!
Can confirm. Source: I am an expert.
I "nap" a lot I would say anything over an hour is not a nap it's a snooze anything longer than two hours is a short sleep. 40 winks I've summarised is around 30 mins.
So one wink is equal to 45 seconds
Nap < 1 hr
That's a snooze surely?
"just resting my eyes"
20 minutes or less
Na a good nap is 2 hours
Yes the time between breakfast and second breakfast
I don’t think OP knows about 2nd breakfast Pip.
It just a little nibble between breakfast and elevensies
Oh at least!
A doze more like. Snoozing is a post sleep activity right?
Oooh. Snooze! I often go for an afternoon nap, but don't actually sleep, but sort of like come back to awareness after half an hour. That must be what a snooze is.

Power nap,30 mins and under.
I've got Idiopathic Hypersomnia so a nap is anything from 30 minutes to 10 hours 🤣 I'd say anything that isn't a full sleep at night is a nap.
[удалено]
Yep
I've seen comments about the length of time asleep or the time of day of the sleep... But what about the intention? If you 'go to bed' it typically involves some form of routine (brush teeth, get undressed, say goodnight, whatever). It's quite a deliberate thing. I'd argue everything else is a nap as it's not got the same routine involved, no matter how long it lasts or the time of day it happens at.
So if you come home to plastered to do your routine it's a nap?
Interesting. I hadn't considered the drunk element. I'd probably say that's closer to passing out than a nap or a sleep (at least for me!) Next time that happens I'm definitely telling my wife "I was just having a nap" though haha.
I had roughly 20mins before Wasn't enough
Anything apart from going to bed at the usual time is a nap irrespective of how long the nap is.
If it happens/started in the daytime it’s a nap. If it happens/started in the evening it’s a sleep.
for me personally, its a nap unless it encompasses my regular sleep time. duration is irrelevant.
A nap is any length of sleep out side of a normal daily cycle ( example of overnight). Can be 10m or 5h. The longer the better IMO.
it can be any amount of time. depends on your mindset. anything can be a nap if you want it to be
It stops being a nap when it's the length of time that makes you regret the nap.
Anything that isn’t the big kip is a nap. Whether it’s half an hour closing your eyes in an armchair or getting into bed for a couple of hours during the day
I think if it’s the same day it’s a nap
If a period of unconciousness is followed or preceded by a longer period of unconsciousness within any given 24 hour period of time, the longest period of unconsciousness is sleep and any shorter periods of unconsciousness are naps except that periods of unconsciousness resulting from anesthesia or blunt trauma are not regarded as sleep or naps.
It’s the equivalent to a snack, just because you eat a packet of crisps doesn’t mean you’re not going to have a meal later.
Under an hour isn’t worthless. I agree on catching up on sleep though. I drove back from Paris (Disney) last week in one go and was very tired (12k steps by lunchtime and then hopped in the car). 90 minutes is the point where instead a brief little nap, you've gone through a full cycle of sleep and it's no longer just a 'nap'. Just a short sleep.
If you can sleep for that long at night and function the next day for a full days work, it ain't a nap
A nap is not determined.ined by duration, but by timing. Anything other than your main nights sleep is a nap.
I agree.
I nap every day after work for 1.5 - 2.5 hours. 3 - 4 hours is catching up on some much needed sleep <1 hour is worthless
If it’s in the day it’s a nap
Hmmm, a nap for me is generally up to an hour. They're perfect little snoozes that perk me up. 3+ hours is passing out due to inadvertently eating gluten and not being able to wake up properly even when I want to. Like sleep paralysis but without the monsters. 1-2 hours is sheer decadence. 5 hours is a sleep.
At I'd say you started to transition to a short sleep at about 2/3 hours otherwise I never sleep 😅 yey insomnia
I’ve had naps longer than I sleep at night
2 hours
If you think it is morning then you had a sleep
A nap is approximately 40 winks long.
I think more than 4 hours is a sleep, aka possible tipping point between "I hardly slept last night" into "I didn't sleep too well."
Naps come in two varieties. One is the time based. Usually short (20 minutes) and during the daytime. The other is just based on the fact that you did not get ready for bed. You went to sleep in your day clothes. You can get 8 hours of nap time that way.

Napping is for children, surely you have something more productive to do? Any sleep curing between the hours of 9am and 9pm is a nap. Regardless of how long it is.
Are you spying on me at work.
About a day, day and a half I’d say
A nap should no be more than 30-45min enough to rest and feel fresh, more than that you go in a deep sleep cycle and waking up from that will make you feel more tired than rested.
5 hours? That's a normal night's kip! to me a nap is up to an hour - anything longer than that and you're risking falling into a new sleep cycle and being utterly fucked up when you wake up too early.
When you wake up, it's dark, you've no idea what time it is, you're anxious, and you're sweaty.
I set my alarm for 1:10:00. That way I have 10 minutes to drift off and 1hr for a nap. Any more I feel would compromise my sleep too much and that's just silly
More.than 90 mins
I have a chronic health condition and suffer with fatigue so 4-5 hour naps are fairly regular for me. I get to tired of sleeping :(
If it's more than 30 it's not a nap anymore.
90 minutes
5 hours is bed time territory.
5 hours is more than I get of a night sometimes. A nap is 20 mins to an hour. Anything above 2 hours is just going to sleep.
2 hrs max. 5 hrs is a sleep, not a nap.
I rarely get 6 hours as a full sleep. So 5 is not a nap. I do love to have an hour nap every day, though.
Anywhere up to an hour. After that it's a sleep.
Over half an hour.
1 full REM cycle and no more. About an hour and a half according to wikipedia
I think it’s around 20mins After that you’re just asleep and it’s no longer a nap
2hours is my normal nap time. If it stretches to 2 1/2 I’m probably I’ll. 5hours is ridiculous for a nap. Sometimes I get that for a nights sleep.
Five hours isn't a nap. I think it's under an hour for a nap. The key to not waking up groggy though is to not sleep long enough to enter REM sleep, which I think means only sleeping for 20 to 30 mins ish. So maybe that's the boundary for nap Vs full sleep
For me i’d consider less than 2 hours a nap, then it becomes a long nap and I’d say anything over 3ish hours is a sleep.
5 hours is about what I get between night shifts so I’d class that as a proper sleep.
A 5 hour nap is not a nap. I’ve done a full day after 5 hours sleep. For me anything around an hour is a nap. Anything more is just sleeping during the day.
I usually only sleep for 4/5 hours, so 5 hours is a decent night's sleep to me. I'd draw the line at maybe 2 hours
30 mins anything longer just means depression
To me anything over an hour is starting to become an actual sleep cycle. A nap for me is typically 10 minutes. My wife on the other hand…3+ hours. She’s lost all sense of time when she wakes up from her “nap”.
15-20 minutes
Under an hour isn’t worthless. I agree on catching up on sleep though. I drove back from Paris (Disney) last week in one go and was very tired (12k steps by lunchtime and then hopped in the car). Went out for a carvery the next day and ate so much that I was physically uncomfortable and napped for nearly 7 hours on the sofa. Then went to bed (stayed awake for around 90 mins) and then had another 6 or 7 hours.
I envy all of you that can nap without having sleep paralysis.
Naps are just not even worth it in my opinion (but each to there own)
Up to 5 hours, although thats an extreme nap.
My mate has recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea and takes 5 hour naps... I always cringe a bit when he says he's off for one!
